One thing you learned when you live near the beach, you have to respect the sea. She could be just as dangerous as she is beautiful.
Facebook Stalker: Novel (A fast-paced thriller) by John Meany
So let down by this one.
I run hot and cold with stalker books. Some of them have been really good but others have fizzled. This book absolutely falls into the fizzle category.
There really is not much of a mystery here. Scott is a romance novel writer. He begins an online flirtation with Laurie who calls herself his "number one fan". It heats up fast. Cyber sex and lots of steamy back and fourths. Scott is enjoying himself.
Until Laurie shows up on his door step..she has traveled all the way from Seattle to Virginia beach to be with her man.
And that is the first issue I have..does Scott call the cops? slam the door? Recoil in horror? Nope. Our boy lets her in and has sex with her.
Can you imagine ANY GUY doing that in real life? I mean..guys..many of them..are already worried about women getting involved to fast and all that. What guy ANYWHERE would act like this? I can't think of one. Most every guy would run screaming..and for alot less than what Laurie did.
But not Scott. Not even when Laurie tells him she loves him after knowing him ONE DAY and says they are destined to be together. Our guy's response? More sex. Scott likes sex..alot. That is clear. But he also behaves in such a strange manner, he seemed almost as fucked up as Laurie.
At first.
Laurie's behavior escalates quickly and eventually, tragically she becomes unhinged and starts to kill. No spoiler there. Happens pretty quickly.
This book is to much like "Misery" for me. Misery is a story I LOATHED and this book seems to take its cues from Misery. Laurie steadily devolves into such a lunatic, I cannot even take the book seriously because she gets away with so much, it's just unreal. And gory. WAY TO Gory for this reader. I found the whole story so distasteful on so many levels.
I was also offended by the introduction. Meany writes about the dangers of Facebook but he seems to put most of the negative behavior on women. He spends lots of time talking about how plain women can't get guys to their Facebook pages, that it is the hot girls who succeed at that. He does not mention the plain men I guess it is ok for men to be ugly or plain but not women? That is what I got from the intro.
And he goes into parents and adults who post things to make themselves looks better than their lives are. Fine. I agree with that. Until he adds an addendum, saying it is usually women who do this.
So.I guess the point of the intro is to say how vulgar women are on social media while men are..what ? Their natural selves? I was disgusted even before I started reading the book.
Positives..it takes place in Virginia Beach. I liked that. But so much of the book is spent with Laurie torturing Scott, threatening to fed him to alligators, beating him up, tying him up, holding him hostage, slitting throats and shooting an innocent man. I was grossed out.
If you like stalker books that read like slasher flicks you may like this. It is not a book I'd recommend.
How should I rate a book like this? Yes, it's entertaining. Does it need to be edited? Yes. And it's simple writing. Which isn't a bad thing. Simple can be interesting. There were a couple plot holes.... With all that being said, I read every last page of it. I still enjoyed it. A famous author meets a psycho stalker online. Yes, that makes for quality entertainment. If only it had been edited. If only there weren't some plot holes. But I would still recommend this to someone who wants to read something that's an easy read that wants to be entertained....
There are so many books to read that when I come across one as bad a this book, I just have to let it go and spend my time on something more worthy. I really try hard to respect each author's work and to appreciate the effort it takes to write a book, but this "thriller" was just too contrived to be believed, plus it is riddled with typos. The premise of the story is that a male romance writer who is just starting to be successful is friended by a fan on both his professional and personal Facebook pages. She writes inappropiate things to him on his personal page, yet he doesn't seem to hear the alarm bells that should be ringing. When she later shows up on his doorstep, having moved from Seattle, WA to Virginia Beach, VA based on a picture of his home which discloses his address, she literally invites herself to be his new 'muse' and suggests a professional partnership. The plot as it develops is just unbelievable and you have to wonder if someone could really be that stupid (him) and bold and brassy (her).
Sorry, John, but this book gets an F. I just could not get past the 6th chapter without gagging.
Got about as far as the all-caps messenger convo (in the beginning of first chapter), which made my eyes and head hurt. When the idiotic yelling about blow-jobs continued and he didn't think "this is a dude", but rather "can't believe she's not worried ppl will think she's a slut!" (for a selfie taken whi!e eating a banana) - decided they both deserved to die. Stopped reading when she got to his house. Read any further, I'd be hoping for my own death as well. Only positive thing I can say about it is that it was really bad, really quick. Saved me time.
Harsh, but if this was published in 2014, the author is probably almost a legal adult now. Using "published" and "author" loosely and generously, there. I'd take it down and either redo it or scrap it, because as it is, downloaded another book of his (also free), and didn't bother starting it when I saw it was by the same kid.
I liked this as quick read but in all honesty it was to far fetched for me . But on the other hand with our social networking it's made it quite easy to stalk anyone . This book kinda makes you think about the possibilities of this happening to anyone at anytime ...
Fantastic, I stayed up late two nights running to finish this book, scary stuff, excellently written. A must read, I will definitely be reading more by John Meaney
I couldn't not believe how good this book was! The writing was impeccable, it felt so real. This was the first book that I read by Mr. Meany and he didn't disappoint. The description of the book was.p 100% correct you won't want to put it down!! Eventhough it is a fictional novel it made me think about how it could easily become a reality; and how we need to change how we use social media. When you read this novel you WILL NOT be disappointed.
The story itself was good, but the editing mistakes were too many to count. It would have been a much better read without all the errors. Mr. Meant needs to find a new editor!
Great book, couldn't put it down. But I was a little disappointed with the end...Trixie"s body was never found, it's not clear what happened with the ransom money and it didn't specify if Scott was able to procede with his life.
If this story was cleaned up and edited it would be a 5 star read. The storyline is good, it pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading despite constant misuses of your\you're and there\their.
This book is a non stop reader and once I started it I did not do another thing all day till I finished - so good and shows what can happen in Social Media - I have to admit I had in the past accepted Facebook Friend requests from people I did not know and had to Block them
You'll think twice before you friend someone you don't know.
Great read!!!! It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time you are reading. Anyone who has a facebook needs to read this Book. It will make you think.
Great story and a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. My feels towards the main character bounced from anger to sympathy and everything in between. Edge of the seat reading.
