She thought she paid the price, but it’s only just begun.

Devin didn’t think things could get worse, but fate has proved how wrong she was.

Her only glimmer of light has become a dark, gnarled thing that whispers sweet words of love and obedience. Binding her to the man claiming to be her savior.

He thinks she can’t resist the incredible pull he has on her soul. Or her body.

She’s determined to prove him wrong. No matter the cost.

He doesn’t offer a fair fight, using whatever he can to bring her back to him. Love and temptation are his tools of deception, and he’s willing to wield them with deadly precision.

Even if it means allowing another to weave his tangled web around her.

One is difficult.

Two will be impossible.

Eva Dresden writes dark romance that lives up to its name with every turn of the page. Her heroines are tragic and strong, her heroes are anything but, and tearing characters apart to see what makes them really tick is a favored past time.

3.45 stars. I liked it, but have some reservations.

Eva Dresden is a one-click author for me, one of my favorite Omegaverse authors. A 3 star for Eva is many other author's 4 stars for me. I liked book 2 in this series much more than book 1, but there were a few aspects of the dynamic between the characters that felt....incoherent to me? However, I think this is a 'me' thing, and that what didn't click with me may click with others. Especially if someone is searching for dark Omegaverse with a messed up, twisted MMF dynamic.

First, the positives:

1) Rey's possessiveness and care of Devin

It can't be denied. He's a protective and possessive Alpha in this book. Typically, I'd want to say he made up for what happened in the last book, but I simply don't feel that (I've expanded on this at the bottom).

2) Character complexity for the MMCs

The author adds character depth and complexity to both MMCs in this series, which is often not seen to this level in other reverse harems or MMF or MFM books.

3) The bond

I'll die on this hill, but Eva Dresden writes some of the most emotionally moving bonds between an Alpha and Omega I've ever read. This was one of my favorite parts of this book, and I can tell it will only expand into the next installment as well. A+ on that front

*****

A bit later I'm going to come back and articulate a few aspects of this dynamic that felt incoherent to me going from book 1 to book 2.

I've read lots of omega books and I find many of them lacking what a true reluctant omega is and especially the character of a possessive alpha male. Eva Dresden is the queen when it comes to the omega/alpha archetype. I love the way she forms the bond; it's biological but almost spiritual. You don't know what you have until you run out of good books and you're stuck with sweet alphas that ask consent for a kiss on the cheek.

I shouldn't be surprised that Eva Dresden somehow managed to turn a horror story into a romance once again, but I am. She even got me to somewhat sympathize with Beau. I say somewhat because he's still a childish monster, but I can better understand his motivations and he's become a more complex character.

I also liked that this didn't turn into a reverse harem/ three way mate bond. I'm not really a fan of that omegaverse trope, and prefer the bond to exist only between two of the characters, even if there's a third love interest, which is what Beau is. What was interesting was learning that part of his animosity toward Devin has to do with his unrequited love for Rey. It kind of makes me want to skim through the first book in the series again to see if there were any hints of his interest that I just missed.

Rey was my favorite character in this book. He fully made up for his cowardice in the last one (and there's even some suggestions in Trapped that he had no idea what Beau was doing to Devin. I don't know if I entirely buy that, but if so, it puts him in a much better light. That was one thing that always bothered me about him and it would be easier to understand his character if in his emotionally removed state after being scorned by another omega, he couldn't see the brutality that was happening in his own club. In this book he doesn't even let another person lay a finger on Devin so that makes the most sense. Unless, in a much darker turn of events, her protection didn't matter to him until he fell in love with her. Omegas in this universe, especially women, are dehumanized a lot so that's not completely out of character for him) and was fully committed to Devin in his own messed up way.

His romance with Devin came off as somewhat of a tragedy at first, because in this novel Eva Dresden really drives home what Devin's true desires are: freedom, autonomy, and purpose. Meanwhile, Rey keeps putting her into a box and trying to stereotype her as a typical omega, who just wants to obey her alpha and have lots of babies.

It takes a lot for him to see Devin and her wants and needs clearly, outside of their bonded dynamic. I honestly thought he would never be able to, but in the last half of the novel he has a wake up call and tries to understand her better. Even so, he's still himself, rigid and very difficult to change, so he doesn't give her as much autonomy as she should have had, but it's a start.

It's very obvious that Devin associates Rey with safety and comfort, something she was severely lacking in her life on her quest to do all of it alone. I don't think she wanted to fall in love with him, since it kind of goes against all of her principles, but she did once trust was introduced in their relationship, which was very sweet to see. Really, their relationship is so messed up, but I'm rooting for them to work out their issues and come to some sort of emotional compromise in the next book.

My only complaint is that there were way too many sex scenes. Sometimes every five pages there would be another one. I love the way Eva Dresden writes them. They're always very dark and intimate and intense. It was just a little bit too much. I wanted a bit more plot. Other than that, this book was amazing. I highly recommend this series if you like your dark romance to be pitch black.

This is an updated review.

This is Omegaverse, if you don’t know what it is, please take the time to look it up before you judge this book. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s DEFINITELY Mine.
*Grins*

This book is utter chaos, and I loooove it!
I jumped into it as soon as I could cause I find this specific universe really addictive.
No Spoilers.

I Give this Book a 4.5/5 Star Rating, Listing as a very High 4 (for me).

Darkverse(?): Definitely!
Lite-verse(?): Definitely Not 😆

Cliffhanger(?): Yes! Jumping into the Next Book Now!

Relationship Type: MMF, I honestly have no idea how this relationship is going to go but I’m obsessed with it! I’ve always wanted to read an Omegaverse with this crazy type of combination. I honestly love the guys a lot, but I’m weird like that 😆
M/M(?): Yes, and what’s provided I LOVE!

Romance(?): 3.5(?)/5, It’s Affection & Romance in its own twisted way, and I’m all for it!

Dark(?): I’m an Avid Reader of Dark to Extremely Dark Reads, so this book may be darker for others. It’s a 3.5 near 4ish/5 range for this one as well, when I think back through the book.

Heat/Dark Heat: 4.5/5
Knotting: Does Occur.
Nesting: Does Occur.
Purring: Does Occur.
Biting: Does Occur.
Mate Marking(?): Does Occur.
Going into Heat(?): Does Occur in Series.
Slick(?): Does Occur.
Obsessive Behavioral Signs: I See bits of it.
Group Heat Scenes(?, if RH): MFM-ish scene
Alpha Dominance and/or Aggression(?): Does Occur
Omega Submissive Behavior(?): Does Occur.

Drama & Suspense: 5/5!!
Pacing: this is Mid-Mid Fast, it’s intermittent in pacing, but it makes since in its own way. But this book is pure chaos and you’re wanting to devour every single page.

Emotional, dark, and boiling hot

After the first book, I had wiped my hands clean of Beau. But in true Eva Dresden fashion she pulled me back over to his side little by little. Oh, when he calls Rey Danny boy, my heart flutters a bit, its so sweet and spicy just like him. I love how once they all became honest with each other things start to turn around in this book. The torture getting to that point is rough though. Beau still has a long way to go for me in my book, but without him the bond between Rey and Devin would have broken or worse, killed them. I thought that the ending of Desperate shook me, but this one actually made me yell out. I wasn't prepared for it to be over yet. Can't wait for the final book and to see more Tobias and his Omega hopefully as well.

4 ⭐️

I love Eva Dresden. She just writes dark books like no other. I seriously never know what to expect, it’s always different, and always keeps me so intrigued and engaged. And yet, even in her extremely dark omega-verse world, I’m always left satisfied (so far) with the happy-ish endings.

Only thing is, I’ve been having a little bit of trouble following this series, compared to some of her previous ones I’ve read. It’s all single POV and it’s very descriptive in an action sense? and maybe not explanatory enough for me? I’m not entirely sure.... It’s like a section will describe all these actions or feelings of the main character for a specific instance, but not actually tell you what her thoughts have concluded on the matter, or what has actually taken place.... and then I find I’m a little lost regarding what has transpired. Maybe this is the style of it to keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out how people actually feel and what’s actually happening... But for me I find myself getting a little lost and confused, and the writing in this particular series just feels a little bit too stylized for my tastes.

Otherwise I’m so into this world, I loved the last series that was based here and I can’t wait for more from this newer series.

This is book 2 in a three part series. Book 2's always seem to get the short end of the stick. Not so with this one! The excitement and angst continues full bore right to the very end. We are left once again at the edge of our collective seats wondering if Devin will survive or be trampled into the ground by a mate who she never wanted to begin with.

Yet another masterpiece!

I am so in love with this world!
Trapped is the 2nd book in this trilogy and does end on a cliffhanger.

However, I strongly recommend this series!
Eva Dresden is one of my top favourite Omegaverse authors and readers who love something dark and dangerous are sure to enjoy her.
This world is not an easy place for an Omega and Alphas are quite aggressive, some even out right evil.

But love does exist in this world, and love they do both strongly and completely.

I suggest you heed the warnings by the author if you find yourself more on the fluffy Omegaverse side, but it's still a series and world I highly recommend to anyone who likes dark romance and power exchanges. :)

Trapped is book two in the Cost of Desperation trilogy and it picks up right where Desperate left off. I will say that this book definitely took some unexpected turns. I might have just been oblivious while reading book one but I did not see some of it coming at all. This book was heavily relationship driven and I was engrossed by the dynamics, the character development of all the parties involved as well as the sheer emotional impact of it all. I think I won't be the only one saying that Beau's character surprised me the most. I'm still not quite sure as to his real motivations but I find myself in a very different place with him than where I was at the end of Desperate. Rey is also quite complex, though his feelings for Devin appear to be more obvious, he seems to have a lot of baggage and I vacillated between cheering for him and being appalled at his behavior. Surprisingly, it's actually Devin's character that has me the most conflicted and that made this a 4 rather than a 5 star book for me. That girl was pure chaos and, while I get the damage that has been inflicted on her as well as the fact that her life is turning into everything she never wanted, I just had a very hard time getting into her head and connecting with her. I'm hoping to get more clarity in the final book. This book is very heavy on the steam with all the requisite fluids, knotting, nesting etc that one might expect from an omegaverse novel. There's MMF, MF and even some MM. There's a lot of brutality as well and the book is dark though, arguably, not as dark as book one. It ends on a whopper of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see how this story concludes in book three!

Drowning in a sea of purrs and complication. The author takes the reader back into Devin's complicated world with Beau and Rey. These Alphas are the kings of whiplash i tell you. Nothing in this book is easy, it all takes a wicked turn when least expected.

There is a turn around for the males in this book as their strange relationship with Devin continues. Devin is caught between a rock and a very hard place, but that does not stop her from fighting for what she wants or trying to free herself from their own brand of crazy.

This like most of the author 's A/B/O books is not a fluffy omegaverse read, step aside if you are looking for that here. This is gritty, things happen which will have you putting the book down to have a break before you enter. Keep going, hopefully book three gives us the completion we hope for.

the warning the book gives you: "my book is not for the faint of heart"

this gives off vibes of these authors that cant handle criticism and will say that the ones that didnt like it were just not prepared

say it with me: dark plot doesnt mean idiotic plot

.......This book is ridiculous
heroine is pathetic for the entirety of the book
there is nothing of substance
the story line is boring and repetitive
the author leans so heavily on body betrayal trope that it becomes laughable
this is a copy of tens of other abo "romances"
there is nothing original
lazy writing at its finest
straight out of wattpad

Please for the love of god
Write a heroine with a personality
And stop relying on cheap plots

So I am not going to lie. I have no clue where the last book in this trilogy is going to go. I know I super enjoyed this one, but it kinda gave me mixed feelings about Beau. I despised him in the first book, but in this one he kinda redeemed himself in my eyes. Tho he still has some major issues. And even tho I didn't hate Rey in the first book I didn't completely like him either. This book made me like him so much more. Devin seems so strong and yet so fragile. She has a lot of strength, yet she does have a limit. And the dynamic between these three was mind blowing. I really can't wait to see where things end up in the last book!

Dark, dominant, and emotionally devastating, Trapped gripped my heart and gleefully squeezed until I had nothing left to give. Fans of Eva Dresden will know exactly what I am talking about! Omegas do not fair well in Dresden’s world with Devin certainly not being the exception. Caught between two Alphas and their dark obsessions, Devin is drowning under the weight of the bond, gasping to be heard and to be understood. Then one day all that is taken away from her with only devastation and emptiness left in its wake.

HOLY FREAK! This story is not a stand alone and it ends on a massive cliffhanger. With that being said, I freaking LOVED this book. It was dark, tragic, emotionally draining, and kept me messed up from beginning to end. I swear I experienced everything Devin did, right along with her. All the pain, fear, uncertainty, anger, passion, and even tenderness was raging through me. This isn't an easy read, but neither was book 1, but I wouldn't change anything about it. Ms. Dresden is a true master of her craft and I highly recommend this and any of her works.

Eva Dresden adds more pain, more darkness, to her Cost of Desperation series with book 2, Trapped.

Devin. Anger and passion and possessiveness. How can she survive the darkness in which she is enveloped? How can she not?

This is dark, dark omega verse. This is complete control. This is the need in your blood to survive, to not understand what you want-or who.

Not a stand alone. You must read book one to immerse yourself in this series. And you will feel it ALL!

Oh here we go again!! Eva has given us this beautifully tragic Omegaverse featuring Devin, Rey and Baeu. After book one ended on a cliffy I knew Devin would be going through some stuff when we saw her again. And she did. I love how dark Eva gets and it takes me back to the days of the Broken series. After book one I didn’t want to like B and his wishy washy behavior. I wanted him to claim her and care for her and treat her like an Alpha would. I am starting to come around but I need to know so much more. I can’t get enough. I love the angst and the pain… not a story for everyone but if you know Eva you know what you are getting yourself into. So good!

Okay, it's been awhile since I read book 1. I ended it despising Beau and unsure about Rey. I still hate Beau and I'm not super fond of Rey, although I still feel he's redeemable. I appreciate that this is a "real" alpha/omega relationship. That ending...poor Devin.

Holy shit! WTF did I just read?! My mind is totally blown right now... I don't know what to think... First Beau was the bad guy and we all wanted to kill him.. Now he is the good guy and we all love him? Rey was the good guy and we all loved him.. Now he is the bad guy? I am so confused right now and don't know what to think... And Devin... holy hell with this omega... she is one strong omega.. Devin is something else! I need answers! I want to know more about her.. and Rey and Beau also... I love them all at this point. Although I do hate what Devin has been going thru.. Still I want them all to end up together.. somehow they make it work between the three of them... That ending though.. Holy shit! That was some cliff hanger Eva Dresden! How could you do this to us?! I need the next book now!

What a crazy rush this second book is. I had to reread some of the first chapters just to make sure I read it correctly. The total possessiveness of Rey towards Devin is madness and all consuming. The dynamic between Devin and Beau is surprising despite what happened in book one. The dynamic between them all, well, not sure how I feel about it. I'm rooting and yet worried at the same time. Totally worth the wait but now the wait for book three begins. Not meant for those who aren't used to darker Omegaverse but if you like this genre, you won't be disappointed.

Captivating! New Favorite!

This was my favorite of all Dresden’s books. It had the best dialogue and the best plot. It’s also one of my favorite from this genre. Eva Dresden just keeps getting better and better. A must read if you like smart female leads, complex male leads, and dark romances.
