When Max ventures off on his own, he discovers a lost territory, and an ancient dwarven secret that may change the lives of everyone. A secret that might also end his own life, and his reign.
Dave is a part-time author who would love to live full time in the game worlds he creates.
A gamer since the 70's, he loves the idea of being able to mix the science of virtual reality with the fantasy worlds inspired by great writers such as JRR Tokien and CS Lewis.
Dave has always wanted to be a writer. Over the past three decades he started and put away a dozen novels, distracted by work or life.
The dream of being an author seemed distant.
That is until recently, when he discovered the LitRPG/GameLit genre full of books that combined his love for video games and epic fantasy adventures. He was inspired by the books he read, and the authors who wrote them. So much so that he sat down and wrote the first two books of The Greystone Chronicles in just over a month. He published the first as an experiment, and was shocked at the response. These days he sits in his man cave late at night and writes the stories of characters he'd like to be, in worlds virtually without limits.
The first Battleborne book seemed a little to easy for Max. He acquires a Kingdom, wins a battle of honor against the largest orc tribe in the area whiling dishonoring that tribe's leader, and starts building his city into something people respect.
Book 2 takes that a bit further. There is some adventuring here, and while some of it happens by accident (finding the Dworc clan and the glittering temple), some of it is by design, including Deepcrag and taking care of a lich who was a much higher level than Max but still --- nope, not going to spoil.
We see some new members of Max's old squad arrive, as well as the new antagonist -- Lagrass, a pencil pushing administrator who set Max's team up for ambush back on Earth. He's here on this new fantasy world, and he's on a wanton killing spree while stealing from anyone he can.
I doubt the Loki we see in the Marvel movies would approve.
At times I didn't want to like this book, yet it won me over. It's not overly complex, more of a what you see is what you get kind of novel, yet I enjoyed it. There's a good bit of camaraderie, and while I still think Max lucks into a lot of things, that can be fun too.
This book took a while to get moving, but I'm glad I stuck with it, because ultimately it was well worth the read, and I think future books in the series will be well worth the read as well.
Unfortunately, book 2 lacked the same depth and action as book 1. Managed to get a third of the way through and found myself putting the book down time and time again. I found it distracting with the protagonist having to both run a kingdom and leveling up. The little side adventures were often lack luster. It felt like the author was trying too hard to keep the reader captivated. I am all about OP characters, but this novel was just missing the same gusto as the first book.
Having had a little time to mull this one over, I think I came away from it mostly satisfied. It draws from two elements of fantasy fiction I enjoy, power leveling and kingdom building, but rarely do both come into play simultaneously. There's a reason for this. It's extraordinarily hard to balance a character who is working to become the most powerful being in his world and build a brand new kingdom at the same time. One eventually suffers as the other becomes the primary focus. In this book, I'd say both suffer a little bit, as it is impossible to be in two places at once. The party isn't together enough to see the relationship dynamics solidify into a cohesive unit, and outside of the battleborne themselves, there doesn't seem to be a deep thread between them. Characters I thought might get a romance arc didn't, and one ends up with another partner, which is life, but kind of casts aside almost everything that was built between them. Characters are introduced who have very little cohesion in the party so far, though that could change in coming novels. And it really seems like the main character is just reacting to the changes his presence invariably brings to the world instead of being a driving force in it. There are however, not enough gripes to drop the series entirely, and I will keep going, but if the next one drops another star rating, I may consider setting it aside for now. Still, not a bad read, just could be tightened up a bit, and I'd like to see the MC get a good reason to continue becoming the badass that the gods seem to intend him to be.
There are starting to be too many characters to remember easily, so be prepared to possibly take notes.
Lagrass... For the most part a useless and uninteresting storyline. The first story about him that takes place on Earth is the most important to know about his character. Anything that comes after is a waste of time to read; I actively skimmed the very last entry of his just to get through it and still found it a waste. He is the very definition of self serving human garbage who should be dropped into an active volcano repeatedly. His actual storyline (again, except for the first part) does nothing to push any of this book's storyline along; maybe it will become part of Max's story arch in later books, but right now, waste of time.
The best character by far is our new little princess who plans to Mary Max when she gets older. The best kind of character: honest, sincere, determined, and innocent!
I am definitely digging Max and his crew, they are making noise at so many levels of their new world. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of adventurer’s herbalism, alchemy and cooking and it makes sense when you spend time traveling. Some cool expansions are discovered as well as future plans laid for a changed world. Max and the other battleborne are definitely wave makers in their new world, makes me wonder how much it will change from Max’s involvement. As a veteran myself, it was cool to have his team start joining in the world with him. Brothers in arms from another world with skills, knowledge, drive and ambition for a brand new world that they previously could have only imagined. I can’t wait for the next installment and I just reread the first to jump into the second! - A fun read
Great read but I'm only giving it one star less for a lil bit of a slower pace this time around along with a couple other gripes. The premise remains the same as the first book and the world is expanded on in this one. Territory and levels have been increased and Max's ability to capture more lands and new people for his kingdom was the main premise of this book in my opinion.
That being said I would've liked to have seen Max tested a bit more. Just feels like everything he needs lands on his lap a bit too easily. As a soldier and new ruler that part of his adventure could have been explored a bit more. Him stumbling a bit and then learning more and later rewarded for his lesson would've been more rewarding to me.
Overall though, I liked it just fine and moved on to the next immediately. I'm invested and definitely interested in where this story unfolds
I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first. To me the 1st half of the book lacked the same personality of the last book it was like the author wasn't feeling it when writing it. Ⅱ half of the book was much better in my opinion. Even though the story is still fun it didn't feel like the main character was bonding with other characters in the story much less any romance.I also find the inclusion of a Transfer by Loki to be Weird . The point of view change can be odd even though it's obvious. I'm also curious if either of their patron gods will ever contact them To tell them why. Loki being the obvious one mischief mayhem and evil.Even though I will get to read the series I hope they next book Feels more like the 1st.
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
I was a big fan of book one which is why I was so disappointed by this one. There were parts of the story that did not mesh with what was already established in book one . the leveling was awful in this book. For example I think max only reached level 24 and I have no idea what his companions reached but based off the amount of time it was said they leveled I would put them close to thirty yet Max cant level in the same fights??? Also the currency transactions are atrocious. The author says he's making kingdom level purchases yet hands out 500 gold here 50 gold there for normal jobs! It was infuriating reading the contradictions and lake of any character growth. It felt like the author forgot what he previously wrote
As the title says, it's just not as good as the original. The biggest disappointment was the authors decision to include another POV on a Saturday morning cartoon villain murder hobo. It wasn't necessary and added nothing to the story other than many immersion breaking points. It'd have been better if the author left him dead. The other major flaw is author ADHD, which is sadly a common occurrence in the genre. Plot points aren't fully concluded before 5 new ones pop up, and by the end of the book we just have tons of open ended, half finished plot points that feel empty and frustrating.
The MC levels up, gets his former teammates back to help as well as some new allies as minions of the dwarven god Reign. He faces many challenges, from battles to setting up new standards for his kingdom. The expected Orcan attack hasn't materalized yet, though other unexpected skirmishes have as the kingdom expands through exploration. What was quite interesting was the glimpses of the utter pond scum intelligence operative that set them up to be ambushed back on earth. He's there too as a minion of the god of mischief. Everything he does is despicable from murder, to theft, to starting a fire.
Nothing was done with the characters introduced in the first book, they are flat and without any merit. The MC is far to soft for the world state, nothing he does comes off as believable. The prejudice set up for the monster races is in conflict with every group met being well spoken and quite urbane. It is a cheap set up with no real basis to build on. The entire story reads that way. It makes for a boring tale lacking any foundation.
Excellent continuation of the Battleborne series. For those that like an ex military MC who strives to do the right thing regardless of the situation, Maximillian Storm is an excellent character. He is just hard enough to make him believable, but still has the time and compassion for an innocent little girl.
The series picks up right were it left off. However, it adds a second POV that I find interesting and intriguing and I am waiting to see how the two come together.
Also, the audio book is very well done. The voices are perfect for the characters and a joy to listen to.
I really don't understand myself. By all rights this should have been a boring read, but it was great, and as a follow up to the first of the books I couldn't tell where one ended and another started. Which is the way it should be. Dave you did a great job and I am envious of your abilities. I have been holding off reading the second book, but after stopping three other stories about half or a third of the way in I needed something to renew my faith in literature again. Thanks.
I very much enjoy the Shadow Sun aeries, so decided to try this one. It's very hard for most authors to write a different story, but Dave does super well in this series. The MC is slightly overpowered but not terribly. There's humor, friends, honor, not crude, not sexually explicit, quality editing, and characters you root for and identify with. Keep up the good work, I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment.
The second book of Battleborne is so good! It keeps the cast from the first book but continues to add to the group with characters that Max knew before and characters from this world. The book continues with the strong litrpg characteristics as well.
The I my thing I disliked was the point of view of one certain character. It didn't seem to flow as well or have the same banter.
I don't have much time to write reviews, but I love rpgs as a genre, both to read and play. Whether it's crunchy or not, I try to support them all because they matter to so many. Let's support things like @tbhalflings and @transplanar because they matter. I am a Gen X'er who knows that we should shake off our apathy and support those who live their truth. Max is someone who used his mind to lift others despite his own circumstances.
The main story wasn't as good as the first, but the new villain was awesome!
Overall the main story didn't overwhelm me like the original did, but there was a secondary story that was great. That story is about a despicable man who is plunged into the same world and goes full murder hobo. I don't like him, but he struggles in a way the protagonist doesn't which make him far more interesting. I'd read a series tha follows him happily knowing he dies in the end.
I made a mistake. The first time I saw battleborne I skipped over it. Fortunately I rectified my mistake and started to read it. I ended up reading straight through both books in 2 days. Then reading some of his other books as fast as I could. We all have our list of favorite authors and it's not often that the top four or five get shifted but in this case Dave willmarth has risen almost completely to the top and deservedly so.
More of Max Storm, the invincible Chimaera King! In this book happen more adventures, unbelievably lucky accidents and huge unlikely victories. I found the appearances of Max old squad mates and his rather sad nemesis from Earth quite unnecessary as the characters were flat and rather stereotypical. The economical system of the world seems rather broken if you compare the values despicted in the books.
yet again another brilliant book and continuation of the battleborne series
I hardly ever review books but find myself compelled to put one here as the battleborne series is gripping, entertaining and damn right makes me belly laugh at the best of times ! Anyone can relate to any characters and their backgrounds, there is something for everyone. Definitely pick this up if your on the bench !
Max Storm and his Battleborne buddies are back for another action-packed ride in book 2. Prepare yourself for some exciting adventuring and also a few larger scale battles for him and his Battleborne buddies as Max works hard to build his new kingdom. This second book builds a cross storyline for future books and even adds a princess.
Book 2 is great, it leaves you wanting more enough to pester the author on Facebook, but don’t. Because he does not play that. If you want action and great world building this series is it. As a matter of fact every book this author puts out is dope, if you don’t read it then it is your loss.
This book is great and I read the first book and this in just a few sittings. Very well written as always. My only critique is that Lagrass is called Max a few times during his sections. I knew who it was talking about but made me think rather than be absorbed in the book those few places. Still a really great read and this series has he hooked.
Another exciting addition to the adventures of Max and his fellow brothers in arms. I love the way the Dave mixes together a story of town building, external threats, sprinkled in a possible love interest, and manages to keep you on your toes. Of course the intense battles and adventuring make it that much tougher to put down!
Fun, but sloppy editing. A few times the author got confused between one of the character (Langrass) and the main character (Max) and once he spelled the characters name wrong (Mas not Max). Everybody is human and mistakes do happen but with a basic story line like this these mistakes kind of stalled the flow of things as I had to figure out what the author was talking about.
This was such a great book I literally couldn’t put it down I’m really impressed with all the little details Dave adds to really immerse you in a completely new and believable world fantastic character development great dialogue just a fantastic story masterfully weaved!
This story of a squad of Earth military mercenaries getting a second chance life on a world with magic was a very interesting entertaining fast paced action packed read that I really enjoyed reading. Only thing that kind of bug me was the soldier’s rank. By the time special forces finish their training, they’re all at least E5 sargents.
