Vzpomínky Američana na jedinečný „čas proměn“ v Praze, Československu a střední Evropě

Mark Baker měl možnost sledovat poslední roky komunistického režimu, listopadovou revoluci a počátky nového systému zblízka. Před rokem 1989 byl jedním z nemnoha západních novinářů, kteří pravidelně cestovali do Československa, aby svět informovali o zdejším vývoji. Po revoluci do Prahy přesídlil, aby pokračoval v novinářské práci a poté si zde založil populární knihkupectví s kavárnou. A mezitím projel zemi skrz naskrz s cílem sepsat prvního anglickojazyčného turistického průvodce po postkomunistickém Československu.

To, co Mark Baker prožil, by bylo stěží možné v jakékoliv jiné době. Z prvního Čecha, kterého potkal, se vyklubal spolupracovník StB, jenž ho sledoval. Seznámil se s fascinujícím světem velkých komunistických hotelů prošpikovaných odposlouchávacími zařízeními, veksláky a podezřelými atraktivními ženami. Navštívil „zázraky“ socialistického hospodářství – JZD Slušovice, podniky zahraničního obchodu atd. Vedl rozhovor s Viktorem Koženým, prorokem, jemuž uvěřily tisíce Čechů. Se smutkem reportoval o rozpadu Československa, aby posléze na euforické vlně invaze tisíců mladých cizinců, které přivábila Praha coby „Paříž“ 90. let, vítal ve svém knihkupectví Ludvíka Vaculíka nebo Allena Ginsberga.

Podivuhodná doba, kdy „bylo cokoliv možné“, zrodila jedinečné zážitky – ty zvlášť vyniknou v podání skvělého vypravěče, jímž Mark Baker bezesporu je.

I really enjoy reading books about the eighties and nineties in Prague. Having recently read Žízniví psi by the late, great Glen Emery, who opened the first real American bar in Czechoslovakia, I just finished Mark Baker's excellent memoir on his time in Czechoslovakia and Eastern Europe just before and after the iron curtain fell. He, for example, was behind the first English-language bookstore in Prague, the legendary Globe bookstore, though is is only one of his claims to fame in that era.

Now these two books couldn't have been more different. Glen's book was a paean to hedonism, chock full of sex and drugs and rock and roll. Mark's on the other hand was far drier (perhaps to a fault, though if so, it is the only fault I can fault it with) and included a lot of information on things that were going on in Czechoslovakia, Romania, etc. I can highly recommend both books, though currently only available in Czech. Taken individually, both give interesting snapshots about this part of the world at that time. Taken together, they form a collage which helps to really understand what was going on here, from multiple perspectives. My own experience, to be sure, was somewhere between these two vantage points.

I can also highly recommend Mark's blog, Tales of Travel and Adventure in Central Europe, which covers some ground featured in this book, but also contains other interesting and amusing tales and tribulations. The bad news is that he discovered the file the Czechoslovak secret police was keeping on him, including a planned honey trap, after this book was published. The good news is that it could make for another highly entertaining book! Looking forward to it!

The saying goes that if you can remember the 90s in Prague, you didn't experience them. Mark Baker shows this to be a fib, and a good thing, too!

Mark Baker nabízí čtenáři nevšední pohled nejen na historické události, jež hýbaly naší zemí v těchto letech, ale zároveň představuje i mentalitu a kulturní rozdíly oproti volnému Západu. Jedná se o jedinečné a čtivé dílo, do něhož autor vložil kus sebe sama. Mohu vřele doporučit všem, kteří si rádi přečtou o historických kotrmelcích Československa, studentům historie, ale i příznivcům vyprávění ze života. To všechno totiž tato publikace nabízí.

A very interesting look at the transformation of Czechoslovakia through the eyes of a young American journalist. From the second half of the 1980s, through the Velvet Revolution, and into the 1990s. The personal observations, details, and description of events through the eyes of Mark Baker are worth it.
