“You were something special.”

Whatta solid killer merfolk story! Let's all be honest...you can't really mess up a horror story with merfolk. It's just too fun not to enjoy yourself. And Farly and S.T. Hoover didn't only honor the standard lore, but they expanded on everything, even taking things in a very unexpected, but fantastic direction, too. Specifically on the science of the merfolk, the nerdy science side of me was in heaven reading everything tidbit that they scientists were divulging. And the fact that the merfolk were written as a very intelligent, instinctual creatures, as opposed to just being angry sea beings that kill for no reason was a great change of pace. The creation design of the merman, Steve, was solid, and the female was like something straight out of my worst nightmares. I visualized what it would look like and the horror fanatic inside of me scrunched his toes in delight! The ending was also not the usual 'everything goes boom' type of situation that almost every deep sea horror story goes. It was a very reasonable, sensible, and fairly unique approach. But this was a well-paced, well-written, and well done (That's 3 wells!) book. I've never read either of these authors prior to this, but really enjoyed my time with this one.

A fun, scary read!

This is the book I was reading when my son told me, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but stop reading and watch television with the family!" It's absorbing, mesmerizing, and hard to put down.

Full disclosure: I noted a few plot holes that took me out of the story, but not enough to ruin my enjoyment. This was a truly unique take on a mermaid...AHEM, I mean a merman! The authors' interest in sea life, the desert, and monsters shines through--as well as their imagination. Combined with their extensive knowledge, they've created an amazing and terrifying world. You'll love it-- just don't go for swim right after reading this book

t seemed too lose detail as the book went on. Creature was intersting but could have used 100 more pages to feel nish cooking. A revision with 100 more pages, edit endng "battle " and action better. This book was most interesting when it focused on the creature and its abilities. Ending action secquence seemed rushed and lost detail.

Pretty good book with some great ideas. Authors were developing a nice story but needed time to cook. 100 more pages and a little more focus. This book was most interesting when it focused on the creature and its abilities. Ending action sequence seemed rushed and lost detail.

This is the second book that I have read about mermaids... in this case a merman, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I would have liked to see a little more interaction with the merman and the main character, and more description of the beast. I liked the way the book gave you the merman's thoughts, and he really gave me the creeps. Once the main action got going it was quite a ride. The end was a surprise.
IF there was another book to follow up where this one left off, I would look forward reading it too.

Review of this book.

A good book. Really scary. I love aquariums. But not the one in the book. That was just plain evil! The story was well written and the continuity was great.
