This collection of memories of nearly-forgotten writers is limited to those who had some relationship to Santa Barbara, including Josephine Walcott, Jarrett Richards, Walter Nordhoff, Charles Stowe, Sara Te3asdale, Roger Dowles, Kenneth Rexroth, Douglas Adams, Marvin Mudrick, Hugh Kenner and a host of others. Each has a short chapter on their literary life in the town. Added is a helpful list and biography of Santa Barbara publishers and bookstores. The author considers it a continuation of his earlier work, "Literary Santa Barbara." It is not to be confused by a title by him with the same name published by David Godine which focuses of authors of national fame.
I was utterly fascinated by this book - 39 tidbits about mostly forgotten Santa Barbara writers. The author has done extensive research on each of them, often shedding new light on their truncated and forgotten literary lives. He has also done a favor to the literary life of Santa Barbara by researching and recording the many published companies that operated there and are now gone, as well as the early bookstores. Fascinating addition to his earlier work, "Literary Santa Barbara." Full disclosure: I may be influenced by his inclusion of my own work (and ownership) of Capra Press, previously owned and operated by the famous Noel Young, who published works by Henry Miller, Ray Bradbury, Ross Macdonald, Lawrence Durrell, Ursula Le Guin and many more.
