I can see how this new release will appeal to most of my lesfic friend readers here on goodreads. It's got faux-romance, lots of interesting side-characters, found family. Elements of appropriate drama and angst within the main relationship, and also outside threats - then also a side relationship with a side-character - as well as the relationship between the 6 'sisters' who are a found family. That element I found the most touching!
Sophia is an architect and had been mentored by a man named Harry since she was 21. She has known his daughter since she was 15, and was there for him when his wife died, suddenly. They became great friends, throughout their work mentoree-ship and continued to remain in contact years later.
Harry's daughter, Billy, always had a huge crush on her dad's mentor, who was 6 or 7 years older than her. But she soon left for New York to follow her own career dreams, now at 27 she finds herself stuck in a rut and missing her family and old hometown. So she returns in time to witness her father being threatened by a member of the mob, for an innocent deal her father did not realize was mob-related.
Enter Sophia, who we come to find out had mob connections in her youth - her parents and the rest of her family, whom she distanced herself from at an early age. But she uses what little connections she has left to try and save her father-figure and mentor, Harry and his bright beautiful - now fully grown up daughter, Billy. She makes a lie that they are her family, via marriage to Billy. To convince the rest of the mob, they are off-limits - this starts the faux-romance angle between Sophia and Billy.
Both are quickly feeling things for the other, but Billy is reticent to be involved because of Sophia's mob connections and the danger they are in. So that causes some angst. They soon realize their deeper feelings are worth it, and we get to see them together for quite a bit of the novel. Although they do take things slowly in the physical department, and there's only fade to black, on the page.
We meet Sophia's sisters, who are her found family and I really enjoyed getting to know them all and their varying careers and personalities, and the tight bond they share together. We follow along with Carrie, a divorce lawyer who is herself in a faux-relationship with a Mayor, who is also her best friend, that simply married her for political reasons... but she finds herself in love with her, and wants more from the relationship.
There's a lot of story here, and various lines throughout, so it was never boring. However I did sometimes cringe at the interpersonal drama, and the "real talk" the sisters would have, but that is my own issue. There's good communication, even if some of the characters get it wrong - too. They aren't perfect people, which again make it more realistic but they always try hard, especially for eachother. My one complaint was the overuse of "swallowing thickly" said far too many times, but since this was an ARC perhaps that gets fixed.
I wonder if we will get a few 'sequels' or 'spin-offs' so to speak, to follow the other sisters in their love lives, since they are such unique personalities. I would be onboard to follow them, and I think many people on my list would, as well. So I'd definitely recommend this read to most of my wlw/lesfic reader friends.

So being a fan of Mafia style books, they are never really low keyed as it was in this book. But I loved that. This was a story about two people who come together to save another. Billie was going home to her father after being away for years. Her father was not sounding right and since she was not happy where she was, it was time to go home. What she arrives there are men holding a gun to her father and now it’s on her. Sophia goes to visit Harry even though the man has been ignoring her. As she pulls up she realizes something is wrong. When the guard at the door comes over to her, she asks what family are you from. That gets her inside and she sees a gun on Billy. But she recognizes the head guy and suddenly she was pulled back in to the mafia after leaving all those years ago. The story has many turns and twists and you learn about why Sophia left and who her family is now. But now she and Billy are married and suddenly life for these two women will never be the same. I really enjoyed the story but would have liked to understand where the age gap was between the two. Some of the years mentioned for both women was not adding up. But in the end it didn’t matter, the story was that good.
Good story interspersed with ‘Carrie’s tale’ – not really related but would have loved more on that! A little too pat but, hey, good holiday read. Is there a follow up?
I loved this book. It was a different take on the fake marriage trope and threw me into the world of the mafia. Lightly though as the real Mafia world is far darker and uglier. Sophia and Billy were a cute couple who really did belong together. The remaining Cordell were an entertaining bunch and I’m hoping to read more books about them individually. Personally I would love to see Chloe try and write Fiona and Carrie after the events of this book.
When Sophia walks in on her best friend and his adult daughter being held at gunpoint by a mobster, she thinks quickly and pretends that the daughter is her wife. As the child of a mobster family, from whom she is estranged, the gunman is persuaded to walk away, but she and her pretend wife are now being followed. When Sophia calls in a favor from her mobster uncle, he helps her but tells her he will want a favor from her in return one day.
Meanwhile Sophia and her best friend's daughter, Billy, have to pretend to be married. And at the same time, Sophia's sister is also in a pretend marriage of her own.
The set up here is a good one, especially following two pretend relationships, with each having a different endpoint.
I'm going with a 3 here because the writing is so-so and there are many instances where the author inserted the wrong character's name into a scene, confusing the heck out of the reader.
Chloe Peterson has written a really well put together story. The Cordell's are a family with lots of love and the possibilities for a slew of other stories to be told. I hope she follows through with those, as I would love to read the stories of all the sisters. Well done!
I loved the interactions of the sisters family. An inspiration to many women with choosen family. A relationship of necessity turns into love. One sister played the game & lost. Another played the more dangerous game & won.
Lots of relationships but really enjoyed Sophia & Billy’s
