Although pitched to parents, helpful for schools and educators intentional about character development. Off puttingly doom and gloom (quite the opposite of optimism!) at the start in making the case for the necessity of commitment to teaching habits and the allegedly soft skills (which are both actually somewhat hard/difficult and certainly way more transferrable than most academic content, so the deragory appellation definitely needs a reboot). I get irritated when there's inevitably conflicting advice - praise effort, not outcome in one breath, then celebrate that advancement of an 86 to a 89 (for one minor yet persistent example). I reaffirm previous judgment that such PD/self help books are useful in providing a lexicon around what is already mostly intuition in order to help with shared commitments/goals.

This has been shown in a number of studies and research and Borba has gone through all that data, and also interviewed many students, to show how and why these character traits can help students thrive. The actionable ideas at the end of each chapter were a great help.
