Lacey and Tom are finally getting married! She can't wait for her dream wedding but dreads her parents finally meeting for the first time in 30 years. All the wedding stress is making Lacey feel like she has a headache, nauseous and tired. Could she be pregnant? What will Tom think? On top of the wedding stress, Lacey is asked to evaluate an ancient scepter found at a monestary. The Abbot wants Lacey to keep the treasure a secret in case it has extraordinary value. The money from the auction will go to fund the monestary's program for at-risk youth. Lacey is eager to help but nervous when the Abbot sends along a silent bodyguard. Lacey tries to track down a scholar which unleashes a host of trouble in her shop. Gina blames Tom seeing Lacey in her wedding dress but Lacey doesn't believe in supersition. Spt. Turner warns Lacey to stay out of it this time and she agrees until she learns it means she won't get to hold her dream wedding out of Wilfordshire in the forest. Can she solve the mystery in two days?

This story is completely prepostrous. Why on earth would anyone ask Lacey to evaluate a mysterious, ancient sceptre? She's in WAY over her head with this one and should stick to household objects and knick-knacks. The plot spins wildly out of control and ends up being a farce. After 9 books of teasing hints about her father's story, nothing is truly resolved. That was a huge let down. I figured out who the murderer was right away.

Lacey is such an awful character. She's so stupid. She still can't talk to Tom about her worries and fears, she lets her stress get bottled up until she bursts and her own stupidity unleashes all the problems that follow. Some characters need lessons on cyber security. Even when she makes a mistake, she can't admit it and never tells anyone or apologizes. Lacey is truly nasty to Gina, who I would have fired months ago, who deserves it as an employee but not as a friend. Lacey still hasn't asked her dad any questions. She's so childish and immature when it comes to solving the mystery. She never thinks of others, especially the poor, belaguered Spt. Turner. Sure he comes across as a jerk but she's making his job extra difficult by sticking her nose in. I DO actually feel sorry for him. Even Beth Lewis has to give Lacey a talking to. As always Lacey accuses the wrong person or people! She claims to be a Gryffindor but it sounds like she's a Slytherin! I don't know what Tom sees in this woman because he's so sweet, open and kind. He takes everything in stride and never breaks a sweat. Plus, that man can BAKE!

Lacey's friends and family don't really appeal to me either. Gina is a horrible employee. Who leaves a store unattended with only an elderly dog snoozing inside? Gina should ONLY work in the garden, never ever the shop. The second time she left the back door open I would have fired her. Gina is a great friend, trying to help Lacey but she's very silly, superstitious and causing a lot of stress in Lacey's life. She can't read body language or social clues. Lacey's mom may have contributed to Frank's disappearance. Yikes. Shirley is the opposite of Lacey. Shirley is a fighter. She's bitter and angry about her husband's defection and not able to let it go for the sake of her daughter's happiness. She causes a lot of unnecessary public drama. At first Naomi isn't very likable either but she comes around. Even Chester annoys me in this book listening to Lacey when he shouldn't. Frankie, on the other hand, is delightful. I don't usually like children but he's so smart, curious and fun to have around. I appreciate his curiosity and eagerness to learn. Usually boys that age have outgrown their vehicle obsession but it's cute that he's just starting. I think he could be the one who helps the family heal and move on. I can see him bonding with Frank. Taryn manages to be likable more or less.

Tom's friends are hit or miss with me. Emmanuel is a lot of fun. He's always cheerful and optimistic. Tom's ex-step-cousin Harry is not a likable character. Lacey doesn't like him because he seems to brag a lot. He's wealthy and lets people know it at every opprtunity. He hasn't seen Tom in YEARS yet he arrives and hopes to attend the wedding- two days in advance? Figures the extremely rich would be so thoughtless and never think of the cost of adding an extra guest.

I don't know how or why Abbot Weeks finds Lacey to help him. She's more trouble than she's worth. I really want them to earn some money for their program. It seems to have helped Brother Benedict. At least I hope so. He seems so happy with his vow of silence. This character is a lot of fun but I have a bad feeling he's mixed up in the mystery. I don't want to judge, troubled youth can be reformed, but it is a mystery NOVEL so the pool of new characters is limited.

Greg Ford is a treasure hunter eager to get his hands on St. Cyril's sceptre. While murder is never right, it doesn't sound like his death is much of a tragedy. Crispin Noble, Professor of Archeology, Latin and Green, Proud Hufflepuff, sounds like a quirky character. It would be interesting to take one of his classes. I like that he owns to being a Hufflepuff but I would think he'd be a Ravenclaw! Or is he a Slytherin because things happen that could be traced back to him, things only a Slytherin would do. In fact, he doesn't always seem to get or appreciate Lacey's Harry Potter jokes. Another suspect is Marcus Moyles, a local who fequents the lounge at the Lodge. He was seen arguing with Greg Ford the night before the murder. Could they be fortune hunters who had a falling out?

This series is disapointing and I'm reluctant to read more from this author. I hope her other books feature more mature and appealing characters.

Having read all the Lacey Doyle books and liked them, the ending left me somewhat puzzled. I'm not sure if it is a cliffhanger or not and whether the writer plans on a 10th book or not. I would have liked to know the reason behind her father's disappearance 30odd years ago. Perhaps it is rather difficult to find an excuse for Frank suddenly disappearing and just reappearing 30 years later as if nothing happened and his kids forgiving him. All in all the book was fun reading and a really cozy mystery, just like the rest of the series and I enjoyed it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am done. I don't care if there are any more books in the series. I don't care to find out why her father abandoned her. I enjoyed the first few books in the series. Lacey came off as a stong character who was starting her life over. She has since devolved into a nitwit. And if I never hear the word pregnancy again, it will be too soon. The series has crossed from forced humor to plot lines even the Three Stooges would not be able to pull off.

Quite disappointing--makes Lacey look like a ditzy fool in a slapstick farce.

The most disappointing thing about this ninth book in the series is that it still gives no explanation for Lacey’s father deserting his family decades before. Any reasonable human being would have asked those questions within hours of finding her father. But Lacey Doyle found her father many weeks before this novel takes place, and she still has no answers. Perhaps she has not asked, or perhaps she asked but he did not reply — I accidentally read this novel out of order, so either is possible. It feels like the author is withholding the rationale because she can find none that is acceptable. If she had no rational explanation, she never should have brought his character into the plot. She could easily have written in her father’s death in a random robbery which left him an unidentified victim. But to return him to the fold with unconditional acceptance and no questions asked is totally and completely unbelievable. It is a color by the author, and that is unforgivable.

The plot is totally overshadowed by this fatal flaw. It has been 3 years since this book was published. Past releases have come regularly, so I suspect the author has abandoned the series because there is no solution to this problem.

Let me get this out there right at the beginning. There wasn't much of a catastrophe and the cloister, well, I guess there might have been a cloister at the abbey. There was a monk in the book who was charming in his silence. I spent way too much time wondering when we would get to the cloister and the catastrophe.

I suppose dying is catastrophic for the dead person, or at least, feels that way to the bereaved.

Definitions aside, this is an amusing cozy mystery. At times, it is comedic, even slapstick. There are certainly some out and out characters, like the aforementioned monk and the busybody best friend. I found the parents' bickering and outright fighting distracting and annoying. I wanted to sternly remind them that their daughter should be their priority.

All in all, a fine cozy mystery.

The Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery Series by Fiona Grace is a fun cozy mystery series with an amateur sleuth, whodunnit vibes, crime & investigation, suspense, tension, intrigue, drama, and intriguing developments.
Lacey Doyle is almost forty, and newly divorced - and in desperate need of a fresh start. So, she quits her job and her horrible boss and makes a sea change- moving to the charming seaside town of Wilfordshire, and opens an antique shop. But no sooner has she started to settle in, when one of her customers turns up dead- and Lacey is definitely prime suspect in the eyes of the town. She has no choice but to try and solve the crime so she can clear her name. Her fresh start, business, and reputation are on the line.
‘With a business to run, a next-door neighbor turned nemesis, a flirty baker across the street, and a crime to solve – is this new life all that Lacey thought it would be?’
As the series progresses, Lacey seems to attract trouble and mystery- getting drawn into investigations and mysterious developments….. all of which make for a fun read.
Each instalment in the series follows a fairly predictable ‘recipe’- especially after you’ve read a few of the books- but with a few clever touches from the author, she keeps you turning the pages, engrossed till the end. Even though the stories were a little predictable, it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment and appreciation of the stories/series at all- in fact I found it to be part of their ‘charm’.
The Series contains:
-Murder in the Manor (Book #1)
-Death and a Dog (Book #2)
-Crime in the Café (Book #3)
-Vexed on a Visit (Book #4)
-Killed with a Kiss (Book #5)
-Perished by a Painting (Book #6)
-Silenced by a Spell (Book #7)
-Framed by Forgery (Book #8)
-Catastrophe in a Cloister (Book #9)

Happy Reading…

Thank you, Fiona Grace!

A fun read involving an American who moved to England and runs an antique shop. She will be getting married soon and between all the stress involved in wedding preparations, she is asked to do an evaluation on an old scepter, secretively, of course. Well, it didn't happen that way and a lot of zaniness ensues.
There were only two things I found that could have been edited better--- one was the word "prize" should have been "pry" when trying to open the door to the safe. The second was that she jumped in the passenger seat--and yet she was driving! I figure it is because in America, the passenger seat is the English driver's seat in England.
Although this is the 9th book in the series, it is the first book I have read by this author. It is enough of a stand alone that I was able to follow the story. I will read more by this author.
I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

This is one of the zaniest books I’ve read in a long time, but I loved it! Lacy and her dog Chester are quite a duo, and manage to drive the local police crazy by solving cases before them, despite many warnings. Lacy and Tom are supposed to be getting married in just a couple of days. But when Lacy accepts a secret assignment to find out the history and value of a scepter found in the wall of the nearby Cloister when doing repairs, strange things start happening, including a murder! And it becomes a real race to solve the murder so that she can get married on time. This is a fast-paced mystery with some false trails and clues, and a surprise culprit and ending (Happy!). I’m looking forward to going back and reading the books I’ve missed in this series. I received a free copy of this book from the author and write this review voluntarily.

I received this from Book Sirens for an honest review. It's a cute cozy mystery as part of a series in which Lacey Doyle owns an antique store. I read another in the series previously. In this book, Lacey is getting ready for her impending nuptials to Tom. She has to deal with the stress of her family being together for the event. To top it off, an abbot from the fairly local monastery wants her to appraise an item discovered in the monastery so it can be sold to finance repairs. Also Lacey feels sick to her stomach often, and has to entertain the thought she may be pregnant, and she doesn't know how she'll feel about it if she is.
When there is a murder of someone Lacey thought was the culprit of a failed safe break-in, the mystery deepens.
The book has a happy ending and I did enjoy it. I recommend it.

Catastrophe in a Cloister (A Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery #9) — Fiona Grace/Narrator: Mary Sarah (29 chapters + Epilogue) June 27-28, 2024

Priests at a rundown church have found what they believe is an ancient artifact. They hope that Lacey can auction it for a good price to allow them to keep and restore the item.

Then, the artifact disappears, and a body shows up.

Subplot: Lacey marries Tom, and her parents are meeting for the first time in many years.

I know the plot follows the same trend as all the previous books, but I still find this series entertaining. This is the last book in this series.

Narrator: not so much, but playing the audiobook at a faster speed helps the voice.

Four stars.

A fun read and an interesting story line, I had not read any of the previous books in this series but had no difficulty 'finding my feet' and following the characters. The text is well edited, which is a nice change from most ebooks in this genre, and there are just enough twists in the plot to keep your interest.

Gina is hands down my favorite character, and if you want my attention then by all means give me a 1200 year old Abbey and a mysterious artifact hidden in the walls. I will have to go back and start at the beginning of the series - I'm hooked!

This book needs a different narrator. The breathy, lilting voice with all the drama does not work for a cozy mystery. I can see how it probably a good choice for a bodice-ripping, regency romance but it is very out of place for this story. It's like the porn star version of a hallmark movie. I honestly kept wondering if I could put up with it any longer. I kept speeding it up to try and get through. I'm just glad it was free. Regarding the story itself, pretty typical cozy mystery. MC doing things she shouldn't that put her relationships with others at risk but she plows ahead nonetheless.

Seaside Harbor Catastrophe in a Cloister is Book 9 in A Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery. Fiona Grace has written an exciting cozy. There are several different themes and complex character interactions before you ever get to the murder! Lacey’s long lost father meets his ex-wife and claws come out. Con-artist try to take a Scepter that belongs to an Abbey. One of the con-artists gets killed and Lacey and Tom’s wedding is taking place soon. So much action and excitement in this Seaside Harbor book. I hope Fiona Grace writes a book 10. I received an arc for free, and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Another wonderful adventure with Lacey and friends. This time we have an antique scepter found in a monastery. Lacey is tasked with tracing it's origin and is given a silent monk as an overseer. Brother Benedict is quite an unusual character and perfect for this story! In the midst of this, Lacey is preparing for her wedding along with the reunion of her father with her mother and sister. Lots of drama and plenty of laughs. A really good read!

I enjoyed this must-solve mystery from start to finish with a great cast of fun characters and knew once I started reading that I would not be able to put it down until I read the last word. I love Lacey Doyle and enjoy her dynamic with everyone especially her soon-to-be husband Tom, Gina and her family who arrives for the wedding but will the wedding take place when Lacey finds another body? You will have to read "Catastrophe in a Cloister" to find out what happens. I received an advance reader copy of this book from Book Sirens and am voluntarily leaving my review.

I'm always happy when I discover a new to me cozy series and like it.
This is an engrossing and entertaining story that kept me hooked.
I thoroughly enjoyed it as it's well written, the characters are fleshed out and likeable, the solid mystery is full of twists and turns.
I wasn't able to guess the culprit and liked the solution.
I want to read other books in this series, recommended.

I've read all books in this series so far but I think this might be the last one. Everything felt rushed and I'm still trying to work out how the title ties in to everything and nine books in it's starting to feel a bit repetitive.

There were also some glaring editorial errors - using who's instead of whose should not be happening nine books into a series.

Another enjoyable adventure for Lacey Doyle and her antique business. The mystery surrounding the antique scepter was intriguing, the character of Brother Benedict added an element of calmness, and Lacey's car chase after the killer was very exciting. I also loved how Superintendent Karl Turner's last day on the job showed a kinder side of him. I highly recommend.

Finally!

Lacey finally finds her father! Lots of action with an up coming family gathering, a wedding, a hidden treasure with a Silent Monk to accompany it and of coarse a murder. Chester and Lacey have to solve the mysteries. Another great book! I hope there is book 10 in the series. Jo

The ninth book in the A Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery series, what a story! It is Lacey Doyle and Thomas Forrester's wedding day and what a day it is going to be! The story has suspense, drama, danger, twists, and turns, and a day they will not forget. A story that had me laughing as I read. A good book to end the series, but very predictable plots. It would have been so good to really change the last one so the predictability of the ‘falling over a dead body’ would have changed, but it didn’t.

Review

The entire Lacey Doyle series was quite entertaining. I was sad when I finished this, book nine. It meant there were no more stories to be read. I have a fairly decent imagination, but I won't be able to come up with the twists and turns and ideas. Good read!

Enjoyable cozy mystery listen, although all the activity and investigating butting up against the wedding was a bit stressful, to be honest, so I probably enjoyed this much less than the previous books.
