Mining for Murder

Rate this book
Zo Jones is enjoying the sunny season at her Happy Camper gift shop in Spirit Canyon, South Dakota—when a murder reminds her all that glitters isn’t gold . . . The South Dakota Gold Rush might be long over, but Zo Jones feels like she’s hit the mother lode when she and her friends browse an estate sale, where a rare old book about the history of Spirit Canyon is causing quite a commotion. In addition to local stories and secrets, the book may even contain the location of a famous stash of gold—a treasure worth killing for. Zo’s friend Maynard Cline wins the bid on the book, to the chagrin of many interested parties, including the historical society and college history department. But when Zo and Hattie head to Maynard’s mansion to borrow the book for a library event, the only thing they find is Maynard—at the bottom of the mountain. The valuable book is gone. Zo knows this must be murder because there’s no way a germophobe like Maynard would have voluntarily dived into a pile of dirt. Now she’ll have to dig into a new case, and go prospecting for a perpetrator . . .

Mining for Murder is the third book in Mary Angela's charming and intriguing cozy series, A Happy Camper Mysteries. After reading the first two installments earlier this year, I knew I had to read the third as soon as it was released. Set in Spirit Canyon, South Dakota, protagonist Zo has finally settled into her new life as the owner of a fun store that services both locals and tourists visiting the area. She's happily dating a ranger who keeps her on her toes, and this time, a book goes missing after an auction. Between the auctioneer, the seller's family, the buyer, and several others who wanted to get their hands on it, the list of possible culprits is wide and varied. Too bad it led to a murder, but because it did, this tale certainly was an entertaining one that held my interest from beginning to end.

Author Mary Angela has done a terrific job at building likable, smart, and witty characters who easily appeal to readers. A fine balance between kind and generous and crotchety and difficult. As Zo gets to know some of the folks around town, she's forced to deal with the local police again... and one seems to have had it out for her since she was a teenager and broke a law or two. He's begun treating her friendlier in this book, noting that he was hard on her to ensure she remained safe. Underneath his rough exterior seems to lie a kind soul. Zo will need his help as it appears he might've known her birthmother... and the woman was likely named in the missing book! Another great reason to get that book back -- it supposedly contained the map for a hidden treasure.

Great red herrings. Solid character development. Strong dialog and memorable descriptions. All the perfect makings for a series that will last for years. Already eagerly awaiting the next book.

I had so much fun writing Mining for Murder, which includes research about the Thoen Stone, a real mystery surrounding the first gold prospectors in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The research led me on a trip to Spearfish Canyon, where I encountered a mountain lion! Although I’ve been to the Hills many times, it was special to trace Zo’s steps and imagine how she might get caught up in a treasure hunt. Hope readers enjoy her adventure!

If you haven't read this mystery series yet then you are missing out. Mining For Murder is the 3rd in the Happy Camper mystery series. This one finds Zo tracking a killer and a missing, rare book. The book is worth a lot of money but also contains history and secrets of Spirit Canyon. Could it also provide Zo with the clues to the family she's been looking for?

Besides a satisfying mystery to solve we also get a treasure hunt! There is some excitement around that including a scene in a cave. There is a great sense of the chase.

I love the characters including the introduction of the police chief's parents. Cunningham is a favorite. I adore Max and Zo is someone you want to be friends with. You can see the love Mary Angela has for her characters.

The writing and dialogue are great. Mining For Murder is a thoughtful and sweet story. The search for Zo's family was a big part of it. I am very happy with what she learns. I love Mining For Murder and can't recommend it enough!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read!

This seems like it would be a great place to live. I like the characters and how we find out more about Zo in each book as she finds out more about her past. The murder kept me guessing.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

"We don't learn from history by burying it."

On the surface, the plot sounds simple. A man is murdered and a valuable book is missing. Zo Jones is determined to find not just the murderer but the missing book. As she admits to herself, while the first objective is simply her desire for justice, the second is more selfish in nature. Zo is adopted and the historical book might help in her search for her birth mother. She finds a treasure map, seemingly cut from the missing book, a gold nugget, and later faces down a mountain lion.

What secrets are being hidden? What role does family play? Who killed Maynard Cline? Why? Why had he been so determined to buy the book at auction? Why did so many others desire the book? What does the name Merrigan found on a note card at the murder sign signify? Can Zo learn to genuinely trust anyone? Maybe more importantly, should she? Will Max ever manage to cook a romantic meal for Zo without burning it? How accurate are Jules' psychic powers? Will Jules regret allowing Duncan to move into the carriage house of her new home? Finally, what stunning news will Zo receive at the end of the book? No, not telling.. As someone who has worked off-and-on on my own family tree, I found the combination of Zo's quest to find answers to her blank family tree and her efforts to find a killer a fascinating read. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and am already looking forward to the next.

Thank you #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for inviting me to visit Spirit Canyon and spend some more time with Zo and her friends, not to mention Max's dog Scout and Zo's cat George.

Pre-order recommendation! The third book in the Happy Camper series by @maryangelabooks comes out on April 5, 2022. I have pre-ordered my ebook copy, but I couldn’t resist requesting an eARC on @netgalley too! Thank you to @kensingtonbooks for allowing me to read this book ahead of time.

This book is my favorite in the series! I highly recommend it, and I do recommend reading at least one of the previous books as well so that you know the characters. It helps to know how they have interacted in the past so that you can appreciate the way relationships are progressing. Zo, the protagonist, especially has so much growth in this book. Cozy readers will love seeing how Zo’s romantic relationships and friendships are doing, and they will especially enjoy Zo’s continued search for her birth parents.

Zo is one of my favorite cozy mystery characters. She was abandoned when she was a baby and spent years in the foster system. Her childhood has made her strong and independent but also cautious and unsure in relationships. I love seeing the bonds she has made in Spirit Canyon and I feel so proud of the life she has made for herself.

As for the plot, it is very well-crafted with a great pace. There was a perfect balance of fun and excitement, with clues and suspects galore. I just think this cozy worked on every level. And that isn’t even mention the stunning setting in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This is a winning series for me, and this third book made me so happy! I look forward to reading Mary Angela’s next book.

'Mining For Murder' (A Happy Camper Mystery #3) by Mary Angela.

Rating: 4.5/5.

“I think you’re both right,” Zo concluded. “It could have very well been Cora in Jules’s house that night. Could you ask her?”

Max pretended to rub his ears. “Did you just say you thought we were both right?”

Brady cupped his hand like a horn to his ear, leaning into one leg. “Say it again. I’m not sure I heard you the first time.”

Review:
The first two novels in the 'A Happy Campy Mystery' series were far from perfect. But the settings and character work were decent enough to keep me invested in the series. I went into the third book with low expectations but was blown over by it at the end. This book is a vast improvement over the first two books.

Zo had personal stakes in the first two mysteries - her friend was wrongfully framed in the first book, while her store risked getting negative publicity due to the murder in the second book. The murder in the third book was hardly related to Zo in an impactful manner, and as such, I greatly feared that the book might suffer due to the same. But believe me or not, this story affects Zo more than the first two books.

Unlike the first two books, there is no involvement of spirits and paranormal entities in the central mystery. That's a favorable point for this story over the previous ones in my book. The mystery is presented in a far better manner as compared to the earlier books. The narrative contains a well-rounded assortment of a hunt for hidden gold, stakeouts, confrontations, amateur sleuthing, and multiple red herrings.

There's a remarkable amount of character development. While I do agree that Zo's actions felt frustrating sometimes, she had her reasons for the particular behavior. Her relationship with Max was handled brilliantly throughout these three books. And this book finally solved the mystery that had been hounding me ever since the second book - the mystery of Zo's parentage! The book ends on such a heartwarming note that it made me keep wanting more.

In the end, 'Mining For Murder' was everything its predecessors should have been. The book and the central mystery were entertaining; a vast improvement when compared to the earlier books. Its satisfactory ending makes reading all three books truthfully worthwhile. While the third book concludes Zo's story on a personal front, I do hope that Mary Angela writes more mystery stories in this series. It indeed was a cozy mystery series as advertised, and I hope more people would give it a try as a palate cleanser in between huge tomes.

Mining for Murder by Mary Angela is the third book in the third book in the Happy Camper Cozy Mysteries, and each one keeps getting better… with the first one, Open for Murder, really good to begin with!

The series takes place in Spirit Canyon, South Dakota and there is something refreshing, like how you feel after spending an hour in nature, about Angela’s writing. Her descriptions of South Dakota and the town are so vibrant and realistic I could see myself visiting the town, and I’m not into camping at all.

Besides her gorgeous descriptions, Angela is fantastic with character development too. Jules, Zo’s best friend, is a fantastic business woman with a gift for the supernatural. Max, Zo’s boyfriend, is a forest ranger who helps her out in solving cases instead of constantly telling her to stop investigating. And then there’s George, Zo’s Maine Coon is the perfect portrayal of a typical cat, always demanding food and wanting attention on their own terms.

Throughout the series Zo has been trying to find out more about her birth parents and we get some more information regarding that plotline, along with a mystery that had me guessing the killer all the way to the end. Often I’ll know who the killer is at least half way through a cozy mystery, but that wasn’t the case this time.

Another excellent book in the Happy Camper Mysteries, and a series that I highly recommend.

I really liked this book. Zo is a great character, all her qualities seem true, and she makes a very likable person.
Everyone is looking for hidden treasure in Mining for Murder, and a tragic death has Zo wondering why it happened.
The ending was amazing, I had no idea, and now I'm anxious to read the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this.

Was he murdered to get the book? Is someone planting clues that point away from the murderer? Why would someone actually kill for the information in the book? Does it have any information in it that will help Zo unlock her questions about who her family might be and why she was abandoned at the police station as an infant?
Lots of very interesting characters in a rarely utilized setting. Good plot with enough twists to make me nutz and red herrings to make me keep turning pages. A good read!

When Zo Jones and her friends Hattie the librarian and Julia Parker go to an estate sale, they come away with more than they expected. Zo finds some items for her store, the Happy Camper, Hattie finds books she's enchanted with, and Julia...finds a house she knows must be hers. She wants this house, and nothing will stop her from purchasing it.

But the most intriguing thing of the day is that Maynard Cline, a germaphobe who is a member of the Zodiac Club, a stargazing club that Zo and her friends belong to, bids on a rare book about the beginning of Spirit Canyon, home to these residents. Unhappy with this win is Jeffrey Davis, head of the history department at the college, and others who think the book should have been given to them free of charge.

Since this is a historical document, Zo wants to see if there is information regarding her newfound own information of her mother. Since Zo was adopted, she wants to know who her biological parents were, and this might be a first step.. Hattie wants to show it at the library, and Maynard agrees to lend it to her -- for one hour, and only if she's the only one who holds it. Hattie agrees, and she and Zo head to Maynard's home for the book. But when they arrive, they can't find Maynard -- at least not at first. When they see his body at the bottom of the mountain, they know that Maynard wouldn't have jumped. But was it an accident? Zo doesn't believe so, especially when she sees one of Maynard's moccasins still on the mountain. The only clue to his murder is the name "Merrigan" written on a piece of paper. Could the police chief's family be involved? Zo intends to find out, with or without chief Brady Merrigan's help...

This is the third book in the series, and I think it might just be my very favorite. I have enjoyed all of the books thus far, but this one brings us closer to the characters, and I love every one of them. George is actually learning to become an indoor cat (I hope for his sake) and Max and Zo are progressing in their relationship (I hope for their sake) and I want this series to continue (I hope for our sake).

Zo is intelligent, thoughtful, generous, fiercely loyal to her friends, and extremely capable. She can run her own business, write a weekly column for the newspaper, and still manage to make time to relax. She doesn't ask questions invasively nor accuse people of murder, and she can put clues together quickly. I am pleased to see that what I have thought was occurring in previous books came to be, because it makes the series even more delightful than before (you will have to read this book to find out what I mean by that).

Zo knows the book contains not only the history of Spirit Canyon, but the settlers who first came to the area. Some say that it contains the map for the hidden gold mine of Ezra Kind, who also came to the area -- and whose mine has never been found. While they think this is the reason the book was stolen, would someone want it enough to kill for it? Someone did, although the reason is still unknown. There are plenty of suspects, and Zo is determined to sift through every one of them.

There is also another intrigue going on behind the scenes with Julia, and Zo's employee Harley is having her own troubles, to her consternation. There are some funny scenes as well, which gives a break in the action. But the murderer is still out there, and Brady isn't happy that Zo won't leave his investigation alone.

The book was thoroughly entertaining, and the plot was done very well. The author has made each book a pleasure to read, with each one getting better than the first. When the murderer is revealed and the motive discovered, it shows us that you can never see into the mind of another person. I look forward to the next in the series and wish I could delve into it now. Highly recommended.

I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Though this is book three in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

Always a fan of Mary Angela’s work, Mining for Murder is my favorite to date.

For me, cozy mysteries work best when I want to visit the location, hang out with the protagonist, and don’t have the mystery solved before the sleuth puts the clues together. Angela ticks all those boxes, and gets bonus points for adding in a little romance.

Spirit Canyon is a place I’d love to experience in the real world. With the natural beauty of South Dakota as a backdrop to a quirky community filled with dynamic characters, I’m ready to pack my bags and head to town on vacation, and maybe a little searching for gold or solving a murder or two.

Zo Jones runs the Happy Camper, a gift store with a delightfully eccentric employee named Harley and a big orange cat named George. Filled with fun local crafts and seasonal goodies, it’s the kind of place I’d love to spend time browsing. Zo herself is a delight. Snarky enough to make me laugh out loud and smart enough to legitimately solve the crimes before the local authorities get the chance.

Lastly there is Max Harrington, the kind and cute, local ranger. Part of what I love about their dynamic, is that Zo doesn’t get lost in the fantasy of romance. She’s a contemporary woman who doesn’t have to have a man in her life — even though she likes the idea of a partner. As she says to her friend Jules, “‘I’ve been falling for Max for six months. That’s no secret. It’s the longest I’ve ever dated someone, so maybe I shouldn’t complain, but he’s starting to test my patience.'”

It’s Zo’s open honesty with a touch of sarcasm that makes me want to sit in the corner of the local bar with her and share a beer.

That’s all to say, the entire series is a delight, and the third book is the best mystery yet.

Attending an estate sale at a fancy house on Mountain View Road, Zo and a few allies excitedly watch a rare, hand-bound memoir written by one of Spirit Canyon’s original settlers go for a remarkable sixteen thousand dollars at auction to the wealthy Maynard Cline. It doesn’t take long before the proper ownership of the manuscript becomes a sore spot of contention, as various individuals claim the book.

Zo can’t help but wonder if the pages contain something even more valuable than a first-hand account of the local history. When she and head librarian Hattie head over to Maynard’s fancy mansion to borrow the book for an event at the library, they discover that whatever is in the book might be valuable enough to kill for.

Finding Maynard’s dead body sends Zo on another hunt for a killer, entwined with several great subplots to round out the investigation. Angela evolves the ongoing romance between Zo and Max, continues Zo’s search for her family history, and shows us the complicated lives of her closest friends, including George, my favorite literary Maine Coon.

With a gold mine of twists to keep a reader guessing, Mining for Murder is an excellent addition to a dynamite series. So get out your lantern, because you’ll be up all night reading Mary Angela’s latest.

This was the third in the Happy Camper series, and my favorite thus far! It's summertime in Spirit Canyon, S.D. Zo's shop is doing well, her relationship with Max is strengthening and she is making progress toward finding her mom's identity. Zo attends an the estate sale of a professor at the local college. One of her rare books goes for over $16,000, making it a hot commodity around town. When the buyer, Maynard Cline is murdered and the book disappears, Zo knows is determined to find the book, and Maynard's killer. Se also has a stake in finding the book, believing it may have some information about her mom.

I liked learning more about the local history, and getting closer to finding out about Zo's past. A lot of relationship building in this one! Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this title. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Maynard Cline snagged the gem of at an estate sale- a rare book that might, might include a treasure map. It might also hold clues to Zo's bio-family history so Maynard agrees to let Zo take a look. Unfortunately, someone else wanted that book more and murdered Maynard to get it. Why did he scrawl Merrigan on a piece of paper- does it relate to the Chief of Police? I like this series, which is classic cozy in so many ways, for the setting and for the secondary plot line of Zo searching for her own back story. She's a good character and I like her friends as well. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It might be the third in the series but it will be fine as a standalone. And now, that ending......

I was so excited to see this third book in the Happy Camper series show up in my TBR. Once again we join Zo(elle) and her friends in Spirit Canyon. Not much has changed from the outset, we follow Zo to an estate sale, to the astrology club, and then we stumble upon the murder of Maynard Cline. Could someone really murder over a book? It seems so as the quite expensive book that Maynard purchased from the estate sale is gone. Zo realizes that the book could hold more than once expected. Not only is it a history of Spirit Canyon, including the history of the families who settled in the area, but the book may also hold clues to long-lost gold in the hills. Zo, much to the chagrin of Brady Merrigan, the Chief of Police. But this time Zo has the help of Forest Ranger, Max Harrington (!!) as well as her friends.

This third book in the series focuses a bit more on the relationship developments of the characters and I loved it! I enjoyed the new and budding relationships, the discussions of baggage and learning to be with someone new, and more insight into Zo's mysterious past! I cannot wait until the next book is released!

Mining for Murder by Mary Angela book 3 in the “A Happy Camper Mystery” series. What a great book I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Zo Jones is enjoying the sunny season at her Happy Camper gift shop in Spirit Canyon, South Dakota—when a murder reminds her all that glitters isn’t gold . . .

The story pulled me in right away, I was so engrossed in it that I read way into the night. I found myself becoming invested in what happened to Zo, Jule, and Max as they are likeable characters even though they ate so different from each other they just work well together. I love grumpy “George” the Maine Coon cat and “Scout” the German Shepard.

I like how there were several stories woven into this mystery but they flowed seamlessly together. We follow along while Zo searches for more information on her mother and what she finds is a surprise.

The mystery itself was well plotted, entertaining, full of twists and turns as well as a few surprises at the end.

I cant wait for the next instalment in this series, I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.

OMG - I love this series! The way Mary Angela transports readers to the Black Hills of South Dakota with her stunning detailed description of the area is fantastic. Mining for Murder is the third installment in the Happy Camper Mystery series. This fun, well-crafted cozy is an easy read with plenty of clues and red herrings to keep the story interesting. Zo, the protagonist, is by far one of my favorite characters. In this book, she experiences some personal growth and deepening of relationships - friend and romantic. I highly recommend this series!

Zo Jones is quickly becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery characters. The latest addition to the “A Happy Camper Mystery” series, is a wonderful addition to an already fabulous series. A mixture of family drama, hidden gold, and a historical book, makes this addition a standout hit that will have readers jumping for joy.

A historical book about the gold rush days of South Dakota goes up for auction. There are grumbles and outright hostilities over the ownership of the tome. The book's contents tell the story of family relationships, hard times, and maybe Spirit Canyon’s secrets. Everyone wants to get their hands on the book for one reason or another. But when a friend of Zo’s win’s the bid and is soon after found dead, it becomes a case of murder. But which family secret got Maynard Cline killed, and does the book hold the secret to finding lost gold or something more sinister?

The characters in this series are delightfully down-home and based firmly in reality. The locations are well developed (having lived in the area this series is set in, I can actually picture many of the real places quite easily, especially the canyon and the gold mine). The victim, although a germaphobe and wealthy, is sympathetic and respected, although not necessarily liked by many.

The suspects are easy to spot and give family and the gold rush an all-new meaning. The motive, however, maybe a bit more involved than readers may at first think. The evidence points you in the right direction, but the ending may leave you on the edge of your seat. The killer is unveiled but not before Zo gets herself into deep trouble as usual. In the end, I saw the twist coming, and I am happy to say that I love the direction it will take this series and Zo. The pace was a little slower than I would have liked but in general, was a fun and entertaining read from start to finish. I look forward to the next installment.

This was an interesting mystery filled with lots of facts about South Dakota and their landmarks and attractions. I haven't been but have always wanted to visit so this book pulls double duty as a pleasure read and a guide book. The mystery itself was solid and kept my interest but my favorite part of this series is learning more, oh so slowly, though, about Zo and her birth family. The ending was a surprise and I was not expecting that resolution at all. Looking forward to the next one.

I was happy to dive into Mining for Murder, the third instalment of the 'A Happy Camper' mystery series set in Spirit Canyon, South Dakota, featuring former journalist Zo Jones, the owner of a gift shop that carries supplies for both locals and tourists visiting the area. I got to meet Zo in book one, Open for Murder who in this story, Mining for Murder, is attending an estate sale clearance auction with friends. A particular book is causing some interest; one rare old book about the history of Spirit Canyon. Zo’s friend, Maynard Cline wins the bid on the book but when Zo and Hattie, a librarian, arrive at Maynard's place to borrow the book for an upcoming event they find Maynard dead.

This was a compelling, absorbing cozy mystery. As Zo goes about town speaking to suspects and fact-finding, she and Max Harrington, the Forest Ranger, team up, with Zoe dealing with the local police. Zo's very large adopted tomcat, George put in an appearance, the mystery was involved and the killer was someone I didn't expect. I will be watching out for book four and look forward to spending more time with Zo, George, Max, and Zo's friends in Spirit Canyon.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Spirit Canyon SD was located in the middle of a tourist destination surrounded by Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Devil’s Tower. It was also an antique hunter's dream. That is what brought Zo (aka Zoelle) to Mountain View Manor and Vera Dalrymaple’s estate sale. Vera had been a professor at Black Mountain College before her passing. Zo’s interest was in the trinkets she had collected over the years, but the most exciting item was an extremely rare book, My Journey West. Though it sold for $16,000 at the estate sale, it was worth so much more - maybe even a man’s life.

Zo’s interest in the book was two-fold. First, she did want to find the person responsible for the murder. She also wanted to see what the book might say about her own heritage. But with the murder, the book had disappeared.

The result is a nice cozy mystery that occasionally had this reader searching for the very real history that lay beneath the legends that provided a foundation for this work of fiction. I give the book 4-½ stars.

In Mining for Murder by Mary Angela which is the third book in her Happy Camper Mystery series Zo Jones, owner of the Happy Camper Gift Shop, gets involved in solving the murder of a fellow Zodiac Club member, Maynard Cline. Zo believes his death is related to a book of local historical interest which Maynard Cline purchased at an auction. Following Cline's death it is discovered that the book is missing. Following along as Zo and her friend (boyfriend?) forest ranger Max Harrington search for clues and question suspects was quite fun. I loved the surprise at the end! I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I was intrigued by Mining for Murder's South Dakota setting, so I decided to give it a try even though it's the third book in the Happy Camper cozy series. What I found was an enjoyable mystery with a strong cast of characters.

Zo Jones is the owner of the Happy Camper Gift Shop. As a baby, she was left at the police station and subsequently raised in a series of foster homes. Zo loves estate sales and traveling from place to place on her red Kawasaki motorcycle. Her main squeeze is Max, the forest ranger who can have a roaring fire going in minutes from rain-soaked wood. Zo's best friend, Jules, owns the Spirits & Spirits liquor store and voodoo shop.

Spirit Canyon is right in the middle of the area around Mount Rushmore, and tourism is its main source of income. I was pleased to see that, whenever the history of the area was brought up, Zo made her feelings known about the indigenous tribes who were overrun by whites with gold fever. Speaking of gold, having a mystery surrounding a legendary Lost Dutchman-like treasure is always good, especially when it also involves an old house with secret rooms and compartments.

I enjoyed this third Happy Camper mystery and didn't feel lost or confused by not having read the first two books. I did have to laugh, however, when Zo was crowding local law enforcement and was told point-blank, "You're a business owner... Go run your gift shop." I often wonder how many of the amateur sleuths in cozy mysteries can continue to pay their bills because they never seem to run their businesses.

Bill paying aside, Mining for Murder is an enjoyable mystery in a history-rich setting filled with strong characters. I wouldn't be surprised if I come back for more.

Mining for Murder is set in the Black Hills of South Dakota, a beautiful area that I enjoy re-visiting in this series.
Zo, owner of the Happy Camper gift shop has learned who her mother was, but is still searching for her father. Visiting the estate sale of a long-time resident/historian, Zo hears about a book which has stories of the founding families. Hoping to find information for her own family, Zo is quite excited that the purchaser of the book will allow her to look through it. Unfortunately, the book is missing. Several people were desperate to get their hands on the book, but who was willing to kill for it?
Zo and her friends track down clues, despite the police chief warning them away. In the end, Zo solves more than one mystery.
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC.

Mining for Murder by Mary Angela - a wonderfully written third installment in the Happy Camper Mystery series, and although I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two, this is my favorite! A cozy adventure in the hills of South Dakota, complete with treasure maps and lost gold mines, it was a great read, and lots of fun to discover the clues along with Zo. A+++ and 5 stars!!!

This charming series continues with Zo Jones in the middle of a murder investigation. When the local historian dies and her home and its contents are auctioned off, everyone in Spirit Canyon wonders what has become of the famous book, My Journey West. Book collector and curmudgeon Maynard Cline wins the bid, but not everyone is happy with the result. The book is thought to contain a map to the legendary hidden gold of the area as well as background on the first families of the town. When Cline winds up dead from a fall off a cliff, Zo and Max wonder who wanted the book badly enough to kill someone for it. Zo is disappointed because she had hoped to find some mention of her mother in the book. Spirit Canyon and the quirky residents of the area are endearing and it's a place I would love to visit.
