The story is part of a new series, You Are on the Air, by various authors. They are a clean, contemporary inspirational romance with heartwarming drama. I liked the characters, the emotions, the various dramas, and the situations. The story has some angst, secrets, and personal issues that must be resolved.
The story will have Dustin Sherbrook coming to Manitoulin Island for a couple of months to be with his grandmother, a permanent resident on the island. The drive from Niagara Falls will have him arriving after dark. Listening to the radio, he will hear Baby hosting a show on Agape Radio. She challenged listeners to call and share their opinion regarding a ministry for forgotten women. When he calls, it will be with a debate between Baby and him, not so much about the ministry, but about God.
Baby: You either believe, or you don’t. There is no sitting on fence posts with God. Dustin: Okay, then, I suppose I fell off eternity’s express train a while back and haven’t had any reason to climb back aboard. Baby: Watch for a miracle, Dustin. I just added you to my prayer list. Meantime, are you good with yard work, and what are you doing for the summer? Dustin: Excuse me? A paid position? Baby: A volunteer position and an opportunity to be God’s hand extended. Dustin: I’m not too sure about the God part, but I’m pretty good with lawns and flower gardens. Baby: Then you’re our man. I can’t believe we got the perfect fellow for the job during our first phone call of the evening.
The story will have Dustin filling in for the gardener and being around the unwed mothers of the home. That comes with some challenges, as some of the women haven’t learned from their past experiences. It will have Dustin and Barbara becoming friends, and while she doesn’t cram religion on him, she says things that bring things from his past back. Dustin had gone for years without including God in his life, even when his grandparents tried to show him the way. When Dustin is driving one of the mothers to a hospital visit, and she goes into labor, he is forced to deliver the baby—and it is a way for God to reach him.
“I suppose the miracle of creation. No two shrubs, flowers, skies, or even people are the same. That must be a God thing. Don’t know any humans with that much imagination.”
I liked the characters, the touch of mystery and secrets, and their faith in the story. Each will have their secrets, but keeping them has repercussions and causes issues within their friendship. The more time Dustin is with his grandmother, the more he knows he needs to stay and help her. That means finding a job, something he is qualified for. When he learns of the perfect position, it comes with issues due to someone else also wanting that job. When one of the unwed mothers has her baby, she isn’t very motherly to her child but then makes arrangements to have Dustin and Barbara be the godparents. Life will take an unexpected turn and leave a child orphaned, but a will might make a difference. What will happen to the baby, Dustin and Barbara, the job that is coming between them, and their future?
What a great story!! I loved getting to know all the characters. I enjoyed watching the characters stumble, grow, find, and keep the faith, this are all things that happen to everyone everyday. I would suggest this book to anyone that enjoys contemporary romance. Such a sweet story that also includes sadness but most importantly faith, forgiveness, and love. Thank you Marlene Bierworth for blessing me with such a great story.
Dial B For Baby is telling the story of Dustin who leaves the big city to go to the island where he spent every summer growing up and still goes back as that is where he considers home to be with his Granny. Dustin had listened to a talk show driving in so late last night and called in and by the time he hung up he had volunteered to the unwed mothers home as the groundskeeper for the summer. He meets Barbara there that does most of the everyday work in the office as a volunteer. He invites her to come home with him as his matchmaking Granny said she was inviting "skinny Sally" that lived next door for supper if he didn't find a date. Dustin and Barbara start dating some but the talk starts around the girls at the home. According to Barbara they all want to be around him but, Barbara warns him to stay away from them and do not help them do their chores. Patsy, the girl that answered the door for Dustin made a play on him as she fell in the garden and he runs to help her up and then she pretends to fall backwards for Dustin to catch her. When he didn't act like he was interested she threatens to tell everyone he did something to her. He reported it immediately to Barbara. Barbara told him Patsy was one she couldn't figure out what she wanted.
Barbara had told him the head paying position was coming open at the first of the year. She tells Dustin she wants that position but didn't have the degree for it and that he should apply. Granny has already asked him to stay on and he can see how much Granny has went down health wise. He decides it would be perfect. When Barbara finds out she gets mad that he is trying to take it away from her. When Patsy comes running to meet Dustin telling him he had to drive her to the doctor he goes to Barbara and accused her of trying to get him in trouble by pushing Patsy on him. She says she is too busy and thought he would be fine to do it. He puts her in the back seat of Granny 's truck and off for a 40 minute drive. She has failed to tell him she had been hurting for awhile and when her water broke and she starts screaming, there is nobody or houses around for help. When Dustin has to help deliver the baby in the back seat of the truck it changes his whole outlook on life. He had given up on God when he was young due to a family tragedy. Once the baby was born and both was cleared by the doctor it gave him his need for God back. His whole life had changed in that one trip to the hospital. And he would need that faith to handle what was laying ahead of him with Barbara and the girls of Island Haven.
This is a very enjoyable story. Dustin is on his way to spend the summer with Granny. On a whim he calls into a talk show on the radio and ends up as a volunteer at a home for unwed mothers. He brings the head volunteer, Barbara, home for dinner since Granny is threatening to invite “skinny Sally” over. There is some angst with one of the girls and Dustin has to be extremely careful. Then he ends up taking her to an appointment and, of course, she goes into labor. Can things get any worse? He does have a soft spot for the baby that she named after him. Loved this story and highly recommend it! I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however, I voluntarily wrote an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
This retiree and avid reader, who grew up listening to radio, loves the premise of this series. As a retired high school teacher, I have had a fair amount of students that were pregnant. Marlene Bierworth address teen pregnancy in a positive way. This retiree also was the caregiver for her father, so I related with Dustin caring for his grandma and juggling career, caregiving, and life. While I appreciated the foreshadowing - I did figure out early on, who the radio announcer was and the outcome of Pansy's pregnancy. Looking forward to the REST of the series. Always delightful to read multi author series.
The 2nd installment in the You Are on the Air series. I loved this easy to read, sweet romance. Filled with love and forgiveness from the beginning, Baby the air show host, brought about love to a home of single young mothers-to-be, while finding the strength to take care of things in her own life. Great novellas in this series, and even though it's titled as a series they are easily stand alones as well.
Dial B for Baby is part of the ‘You Are On The Air’ box-set. In this novella, Dustin Sherbrook returns to Manitoulin Island, Canada, to spend the summer with his grandmother. An impromptu call to the local talk radio show, sees him volunteering at a women’s home. This is a story with great banter and interplay between the three main characters, Dustin, his Gran and Barbara. You’ll encounter laugh out loud moments, beautiful scenery and lots of emotions.
This novella is full of surprises, faith, and a clean but unexpected romance. It also involves a home for unwed mothers, a Christian radio host, an abandoned baby as well as God’s redemptive grace. I suggest you read this wonderful story to see how all the pieces fit together.
An easy to read book from the series You’re on the Air. I loved the story of romance between Dustin and Barbara, and how everything unfolds. I was glad to have a chance to read this book and I know many others will enjoy it too. I received a copy but all my opinions are my own.
This was such a great way to spend the evening! I love this book. Have you ever read a book that makes your heart happy? Well this one did for me. Don't pass it up!
I’m really enjoying this series. The strong Christian family theme, romance, humor, good story line and interesting characters keep you involved with the story. Barbara and Dustin both have kind hearts and strong values.
What a wonderful story set in a beautiful place I had never heard of, Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, Canada. Marlene Bierworth crafted a tender love story that I could not put down. Will be reading more of her work.
There's drama, romance, a little comedy, and an inspirational factor to this great story. I love the talk show host who volunteers by day and host the talk show. I enjoyed reading about the characters and the things they go through. Lots of great moments to be found in this story.
A new-to-me author and a wonderful read. Enjoyed the characters and the Manitoulin Island setting in this inspirational and touching story. Would recommend.
