Minerva Howe is the kinky alter ego of author Julia Talbot. Julia lives in the great Southwest, where there is hot and cold running rodeo, cowboys, and everything from meat and potatoes to the best Tex-Mex. A full time author, Julia has been published by Samhain as well as other publishing houses. She believes that everyone deserves a happy ending, so she writes about love without limits, where boys love boys, girls love girls, and boys and girls get together to get wild, especially when her crazy paranormal characters are involved.
Oddly, one of my favorite things about Minerva's books is how she writes children. They are always adorable and remind me of my own twins when they were little. Tony in this book is no exception; I love him as much as I loved the little Dragon Hoard kids. The book itself is great too; no surprises there.
I loved the first book in this series, so I had high hopes for this one, but sadly it wasn't for me. I've noticed that this author has two settings. Number 1 (and the reason I'm a fan) is steamy, a bit kinky, some tension between the main characters, sweet, with a dash of paranormal excitement. Book one was like that. Book two, however, was setting number 2: Fluff with little to no plot. Going into this book, I expected more tension. For one thing, this is a second chances romance, so usually it's a bit difficult for characters to sort out what that means for their relationship. Mainly, though, I thought that it would be Saul's difficult past that would be a central theme and tension. However, even though Saul expresses his reservations at first, his trauma more or less vanishes upon his reunion with Mark--speaking of which, there's not really any relationship development. I wanted them to fall in love, to see that romance blossom, watch Saul heal as a person with some hurt/comfort. Instead, BAM, they are together. Most of the book is just the two of them going about their lives as a family. Pages after pages after pages of this got repetitive. Tony, Saul's kid, really takes center stage and is sickeningly cute. In fact, the whole thing is just so darn cute that I really couldn't stand it. I liked the cast of the previous book and was excited to see them again, but in this book I couldn't keep track of everyone for a really long time. Probably because they weren't all that distinct as characters--what with absolutely nothing going on other than the most mundane aspects of their lives. I expected that at a minimum maybe a bad guy from a previous book would resurface--but no, apparently all the nastiness from Saul's past was resolved at the end of the previous book....annoying considering that this book (not the previous one) is supposed to be Saul's. Where was the intrigue of the previous book? The magic? The steam? The vibrant and distinct characterizations? Look, there are readers out there who are going to love the cute kid and the day to day of two men in love living their lives... for me, however, this was just too sugary sweet. I wanted more and expected more than what I got from this one. I'm planning on reading the next book though, fingers crossed it's more like the first one. **I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review**
Having read the first book not that long ago, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an opportunity to read the second one before its official release. I didn't think the first book would be for me as I usually don't like anything related to pregnancies or children, but I ended up liking it and thought it was nice and had even opened a new perspective on the genre for me, but reading this second book, however, made me realize it hadn't.
First of all, the ending of the first book felt natural to me, like a nice transition between Tim and Lukas's story to Saul's and I was excited to learn about him, his past... I was even making up scenarios about how Saul and the mayor would interact with each other - or anyone from the Whites family, really - if they were to bump into each other but I was disappointed when I realized it wasn't going to happen.
Going with what I just said, I expected some kinda trauma/PTSD on Saul's end (I mean you don't flee from a town without giving any warnings to anyone just like this) so I was interested in seeing how it would play in Saul and Mark's relationship but... It didn't happen either. It seemed like at the beginning, there was some kinda trauma but as he got together with Mark, poof, the trauma disappeared - which isn't really how this works, speaking from experience.
Now, onto the relationship. Whereas Lukas's and Tim's was sweet and felt natural, Saul and Mark's felt... rushed? Like, I just finished the book and I don't remember seeing them falling in love, it felt like they just got together and that's it. Which is sad, because oh boy, this book definitely had potential for some hurt/comfort (god, I love this trope). I mean, yes, they had previously been on a few dates before the whole mayor and getting pregnant thing, but it was years ago, so it would've been nice to actually see the flame they had for each other reignite little by little.
The part - and character - I didn't like the most in this book is Tony (Saul's child). I somehow sensed it would happen, seeing as I don't like children, and it unfortunately did. The dialogues and scenes with him made me cringe (not saying they were badly written, just... too sweet, too... childish if that makes sense, and even forced at some point).
I was also sad to see that there were almost no plot in the second book compared to the first one, if the author had just used elements from the first book (characters such as Frank or the mayor) it would've brought so much tension, and in the end, some plot. That's what irked me while reading the book, it's like, why would the whole intrigue of the second book be resolved in the first one? Didn't really make sense to me.
I didn't DNF this story because I liked seeing past characters and reconnect with them, but even then, it felt lackluster to me. Like the characters were merely shadows of who they were in the previous book. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it really felt like all the characters from the first book had lost their depth, and became shallow. Just as the two (three, counting the kid) main characters.
2.5/5
***I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Review and this is my honest opinion.***
Book 2 in this series and I loved every word written. Saul is a single dad who returns to Secret Springs to start up a day care center and runs into Mark the local Police Officer and sparks fly. I highly recommend this series and am so looking forward to the next book.
I very much wasn't feeling this one. It was fine, it was cute, but there wasn't much, if anything, that made it stand out above any other mpreg romance. It was a bit boring, if I'm being honest. I had hopes on at least a bit of drama, but nope. I hope the next one will have more pizzazz
This is the second book in the authors Secret Springs series. Like the first book, I pretty much read this in one go. While this book can be read as a standalone, there are recurring characters from the first book.
Saul is an Omega, a single dad with a four-year-old son. He left town when he discovered he was pregnant, the result of an assault, and the Alpha was threatening him. He told no one, and left without saying a word to his friends, or to Mark, the Alpha he’d just started dating at the time.
When the threat to him is gone, he moves back to town, with plans to start a daycare. He’s gotten a degree, gotten a loan, and has plans for his life. He also has no plans to date until his son is grown. He’s still fearful of how he will react to anyone touching him.
This book moves quickly, with him running into Mark, and resuming their friendship. Mark has never forgotten Saul, has even looked for him over the years. And, Saul has never forgotten Mark. It’s clear from the start these two have strong feelings for each other, and friendship quickly blooms into more. Saul throws his dating plan right out the window.
I loved how gentle Mark is, and how he bonds immediately with Tony, Saul’s little boy. He’s inclusive of him, and mindful of his feelings. Saul and Mark’s chemistry is steaming on the page, and their communication is wonderful. Mark, formerly a beat cop when they dated before, is now the Chief of Police. After spending some unplanned time away from Saul and Tony, he quickly realizes he needs to make some choices about his future. He steps up, and makes changes, and their relationship moves quickly.
This was a good read, with little angst and a HEA. I still love all the side character’s, and I liked we got to see more of Jack in this book. My only wish was we’d seen more of the ghost from the first book, even though he is mentioned.
I’m eagerly waiting for the next book in this series.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series (Pens and Needles) and was hoping for more of that from Halos and Heroes, but this one just didn’t deliver the same level of storytelling and suspense.
Saul and Mark went on two dates before Saul had to leave town. Years later, Saul’s back and the attraction between the two of them is definitely still there but Saul isn’t interested in dating - he has a 4-year-old son and a new business to get up and running. Mark doesn’t make it easy for him to ignore him, quickly making himself a regular part of Saul and Tony’s lives and convincing Saul he wants more than just friendship.
These two were really sweet together and seeing them finally create the family they’ve both been missing was adorable, but they didn’t really develop their relationship - it just went full steam ahead from the very beginning and didn’t really work through any of Saul’s past trauma together. I wanted a little more depth, steam and emotional connection between them. It was almost a little too sweet for me...seeing Mark and Tony bond was great, but I feel like every part of Saul and Mark’s relationship (even the “hard” parts) were conveniently easy and really fluffy. Where were the trials and conflicts that ultimately brought them closer? I definitely could have used more of that throughout.
The Secret Springs cast of characters is entertaining as always, but I felt like there were a LOT of additions to the group in this story and it made it kind of difficult to keep everyone straight. I loved seeing Lukas and Tim from book 1 working through their relationship after the honeymoon stage and really can’t wait to see how Chase and Jack come together in the next book!
Somewhere between 3.5 - 3.75, but rounded to a 4. The book was cute....a bit on the cheesy side, but I liked all the characters. Saul was sweet, even after what happened to him. His son Tony was a little cutie, everyone seemed to absolutely love and adore him. Mark couldn't have been a more perfect match for Saul. Relationship wise, things progressed really fast, so I was slightly surprised by that. There wasn't any real angst to speak of. That can be a good thing for some who are wanting a smooth read. For me, I do enjoy the occasional no/low angst books, however, with this one, I would have liked something thrown in to break up the steady flow of daily life and routines. If I’m being completely honest, well, I was wanting something to get all those alphas riled up, to show their protective and possessive sides take over. I can't help it, I'm such a sucker for alphas going all out alpha. I'm hoping we get some of that with Jack in the next book. Anyway, as I'm sure you've figured out by now, I did like the book, but was hoping for more. I'd recommend others to give it a chance.
I love this author’s work and did really enjoy the book. That being said, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first book. I do love how we got to see Saul finally getting his HEA surrounded by his friends and family and with a truly found family. Mark was sweet and kind and patient and they worked really well together. I think the main thing that was missing was that we didn’t get to see them get to that happy point as much. Don’t get me wrong, there were all kinds of sweet feels and watching Mark, Saul and Tony as a family was heart warming, but we didn’t see Saul and Mark work through Saul’s past really. I think that would have made this a five star for me. With how lovely Nark was it would have been wonderful to see him help Saul learn to trust and move past what was done to him to finally feel at home again. I think it also would have added a layer to their relationship that would have really deepened the connection between them.
I still loved the book though; you get sweetness and light and happiness and found family which was perfect for giving you all the warm fuzzies!
This is an easy read that I enjoyed a lot and it was nice to go back to Secret Springs to get Saul’s HEA. Saul and Mark are both so lovely and it was delightful to see them finally get together as they obviously should have been if Saul hadn’t had to leave town suddenly. Once they do meet again they have a lot of chemistry and there are some heated moments between the two. The appearance of all the characters we met in book one adds a lot to the story and the enjoyment of it. As a second book in the series, it could be read as a stand-alone but for a better understanding of what’s happened in the past, I would read book one first. The reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars is that after Saul struggling to overcome his past and not wanting to be close to anyone again he gave in without much of a struggle and this felt too quick for me. This was a sweet story with heat and no angst. I’m so glad Saul found Mark again and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I was given an ARC of this book to review and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.
3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️. I liked this 2nd entry in the Secret Springs series, but I didn’t love it. The book is a second chance romance between the chief of police, Mike, and a returning resident, Saul. Saul had quickly left Secret Springs five years ago after a traumatic event. After his best friends convince him to return he comes back with an adorable four year old in tow. The MC’s has been on 2 dates before Saul abruptly left town and are now wondering if it’s possible to find their way back to each other. They navigate their way through dating with a child involved and once they learn to communicate better it is pretty much smooth sailing. The book is pretty low angst, considering the trauma that caused Saul to leave initially, and I guess I was expecting some PTSD from that event or even a confrontation of sorts. Don’t get me wrong, I was glad neither Saul or Tony had to go through that, but it felt a little easily resolved. These two men are perfect for each other though and deserve their HEA. Will definitely read the next book and see who gets their HEA next.
Halos and Heroes is the second book in the Secret Springs series by author Minerva Howe. This is a nice fluffy type of story. I love the humor and the sweetness in this story. I did find one thing odd for me that is. There was a build-up to something big being the reason that Saul left before. Then it got well-brushed off so fast you might miss it. I think it could have been something a little more to it and the story would have benefited from it.
Saul has a little boy who is four years old. He is starting his own daycare. He is also returning to the small town he fled from years ago. He has his worries but for the most part, he is just a sweet gentle guy.
Mark is the town Sherriff they had a thing before Saul left. He is an easy-going guy who needs to learn he cannot control everything.
This is a fast-paced romance with side characters I loved and want to know more about. I would definitely want to read more in this series in the future.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. You can tell it's going to be an interesting becuause of the rift between Saul and Mark, was a buildup from a past hurt they tiptoe around, Once Saul had returned back home. While it brins in the hilarious read when the first thing is about colored marshmallows! Now the Mark watches the daddy omage with his of joy while building his future business. Saul had sworn off dating until Tony is older but Mark is a persistent sucker, can he wiggle his way back into Saul's life. Little Anthony "Tony" is just too adorable! Don't look now but I can feel the drama that is brewing in the shadows, because this was going so good for Saul being back in Secret Springs! The squad of close net friends all have each other's back in this wonderful little town that I can't wait to see who is next at getting their happily ever after.
Halos and Heroes is a very good second book in the Secret Springs series. It's very low angst with a second chance for alpha cop, Mark, and omega child carer, Saul with some hurt/comfort there after readers discovered why Saul left town four years ago without a word at the end of book one. These two are meant for each other. It's so easy to see how well they match up and crush on each other, even before they give in but it's doesn't take long for things to get moving for them. There is a great balance of sweet, hot, fun and love between them and that's not even including Tony, Saul's four year old son. He is just cuteness overload! The story flows well from the start, swiftly moving along and with constant interaction with their friends around town. A recommended read for me, especially if you're looking for something drama free and easy to fall into. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I really enjoyed this read and look forward to reading the rest of this series. Sal left town shamed and pregnant. When he comes home he reunited with his ex, Mark. He now has a little boy and dream to make a daycare and raise his son alone. Despite his trauma this jumped up on the instalove scale with next to no angst and next to no conflict. It is still great for a simple read with heat and a great story line. I do feel that some conflict was lacking to jump straight from I never want anyone again to oh I love you let's move in and marry. Despite the simplicity of the plot and the fact that more conflict could have happened I would still highly recommend it. It really was a sweet story. I'm happy the family was able to come together and find their happiness and the side characters are amazing. I'm super eager to read the rest of this series. I received an arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book is phenomenal and I loved it! Saul has come back to Secret Springs after a few years of being away. He and his son, Tony, are immediately embraced by all his friends. Mark is the chief of police and he and Saul had just started dating when Saul left. Mark is upset with himself for not knowing what happened and why Saul left and vows to be whatever Saul needs him to be, even if it is just friends. He will get a second chance to be everything to Saul though and it will be all he ever wanted. They will take things slow but it’s soon evident just how much Tony loves Mark and from there, there is no going back. Mark and Saul agree to be everything to each other forever and they get to start down the path to their happily ever after.
I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
This 2nd book in the Secret Springs series doesn't have the drama of Book #1 (Pins & Needles). Omega Saul has a son by the villain of Book #1 (drugged attack) but left Secret Springs ashamed of his being in the family way. He leaves behind his friend Sheriff Mark w/o a word and not knowing Mark wanted more from Saul, not just the friends' level Saul left behind. Saul has pulled himself up by his bootstraps, got an education, and now returns to Secret Springs be enveloped in the circle of his fellow omegas to start a daycare & surround his son Tony with family love these omegas offer. How each man deals with this rekindling relationship is a slow burn without much of a conflict. I liked this story but was somewhat disappointed in the plot line of the theme. This is my voluntary review of the ARC I received.
I am so in love with the small town of Secret Springs. I want to live there! Here we have Mark and Saul’s story. Mark is the chief of police and Saul is the single parent omega who only recently came back home with the threat of the Wrights removed. These two had chemistry before Saul disappeared and Mark would like nothing more than to pick up where they left off. Saul however isn’t sure he is ready for anything, but Mark is patient. It doesn’t hurt that Saul’s little boy quickly falls in love with him and starts calling him Popsy. This is simply a sweet no angst story of two people falling in love and making it work. There are laughs with friends and found family and lots of love to go around. Amazing story and I can’t wait to see what is in store for Chase in the next book. That one should be explosive!
Excelent group of found family. Saul, is an amazing strong man. He initially left his town under what he throught was a personal disgrace and became a stronger man for his trauma. His son, Tony is an absolute delight. He keeps the story light fun and demonstrates the joy and balance of innocent childhood. Saul, is trying to start a child care business and faces lots of challenges. Mark, Chief of Police, was interested in Saul before he left town. They started dating, then Saul left abruptly. Now that he returned, Mark is still interested. There are lots of secrets and friendships in this town. New friends are made and old friends are reacquainted. Does Saul, get his child care business? Does Mark, make his move? Is Saul, able to trust a new relatioship? Great story, sbsoluely enjoyable, well done!
This was a relatively good story, but overall just too sweet and with almost zero difficulties. Given Saul’s past and the trauma that caused him to leave town, I expected that at least part of the book would be dedicated to Mark actually wooing him and working through his issues. Instead it jumps in an embarrassingly short time from Saul stating he’s not dating until his son is grown to Mark virtually moving in. All the rest, from them becoming a family to their friends to all the children, was over the top adorably sweet and picture perfect. I liked reading this well enough, but I would have enjoyed it more with some tart to balance out all the sugary sweetness. Somehow, I doubt the next book in the series will have the same problem.
This was the second story in the Secret Springs series. Saul is an Omega that returns home with his son Tony. He ran away when he discovered he was pregnant. Mark is an Alpha and the Sheriff of Secret Springs. He also never stopped thinking about Saul. They had been out on a couple of dates when Saul discovered his pregnancy. Floved this story so much!! Loved Tony!! It was the perfect pick me up, pure fluff!!I cannot wait for the next in the series! It is very well written, highly recommend! Seriously loved every moment of this story!! I’m voluntarily leaving a review from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
4 stars A sweet hurt/comfort, second chance romance!
I’m loving this series and this book is no exception. A low angst read with a hurt/comfort, second chance alpha/omega romance with a sweet HEA. Saul and Mark deserve their second chance after everything Saul went through before they could have more those few years ago.
This book also has all of the guys coming together to help Saul get his daycare off the ground and we see new friends coming in. I love watching these guys finally fall into their found family and grow in love and friendship. This series is fast becoming one of my re-reads for low angst, feel good comfort. I’m ready for the next book!
Okay these books are a guilty pleasure. I actually find the writing truly repetitive, but the nice part is can skip a lot of the smut and just get the story that ties it all together. They are very sweet and caring with themes of chosen family, support, love, and longing.
They are great, though I am struggling to understand the physiology of these worlds. I have to actively work to set aside my disbelief and just enjoy them, though I do share the parts that confuse me with my husband (and these are NOT his kind of stories) and we laugh.
Also we cannot hear/see the word "knot" the same every again.
This is the second book in the Secret Springs series and I loved it. Saul ran from his hometown pregnant and scared and years later when his friends find him, he returns hone to build a life surrounded by his friends. Mark was confused when Saul ran, but is so sweet and patient with Saul letting him take their relationship at his own pace after his return. They are a great couple, but Tony absolutely steals the story. Can’t wait for what happens next in Secret Springs.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.
This is the second book in this series. Saul and his son Tony, are back in Saul’s hometown of Secret Springs. And very happy to be with his group of friends again. He is looking forward to starting a childcare centre, as long as he can get funding from the bank. Mark is the police chief of the town and also happens to have been dating Saul when he skipped town. Mark is happy Saul is back and is hopeful they can pick up where they left off, but Saul is cautious and is wary of relationships and just wants to stay friends.
I received this book from GRR. This is my honest review.
Sweet alpha/omega m/m love story Reviewed in Canada on August 24, 2021 Saul and Mark get the happy ending they were always suppose to get.
Saul is back in town with a four year old. And he’s ready to start over. A new business and a life with his son. No romance. Or so he thought. But Police Chief Mark has other plans. He wants it all with Saul and will do anything to to make his omega happy and get the happy ending they both deserve.
This book was pretty sweet and cute and you can’t help but fall in love with Mark and Saul
This series is so good. This one really hit me in the feels. I especially like how the author handled Saul’s past and it’s affects on him. Gave a deeper feeling to his snd Mark’s connection. And seeing how the families are growing becoming an even bigger found family is so precious. That’s how communities should be. One small thing I would have liked to have seen. There wasn’t more mentioned about Mark’s abuelita after the grocery store. I’d like to know what happened there.
I'm loving the matchups so far in the Secret Springs series. Tim and Lukas had that HOT instalove in the first book but in this book, Saul and Mark was a second chance romance and OMG it was sweet and HOT. This romance was mainly them reconnecting, finding love and family...hardly no angst...so heartwarming with a fabulous group of family and friends that are very supportive. Loved lil Tony...he made my time reading this worthwhile. Now I can't wait to see what's up with that love/hate relationship that's going on with Chase and Jack.
Halo and Heroes is a great second-chance book. Saul and Mark are wonderful together and love the antics of Tony. Tony is a single omega raising his son, Tony, and gets a chance to start his own business with the help of friends. Mark is chief of Secret Springs and he's hoping that he gets a chance with a new relationship with Saul. Saul is leery of dating but after being around Mark he wants more and so does Mark. The book is sweet, romantic, slow-burn, funny, great and likeable characters, adorable kids and I'm looking forward to Chase and Jack's book.
