Natalie Bach is back in her hometown to take care of her ailing mother. She's also been dumped by a boyfriend and she's trying to get her life together. Thankfully, her old employer, Goldman Law offers her the job she had previously with them.

The boss' son has been arrested for attempted murder. He and his son are not close and the son won't speak to him. He asks Natalie to see what she can find out... with the help of a fellow solicitor.

She's becoming involved with the man who took her job when she had left previously. He and his wife are separated ... he's always had a thing for Natalie ... and he's not about to lose this second chance.

But one of his sons seems to be suffering from illness or another and he's found it hard t o move out. But now his wife claims that 'someone' pushed her down the stairs. She's lucky to be alive ... but is she going to accuse her husband of trying to get rid of her ... or is this another ploy to keep him with her?

Convictions is the first book in a gripping new legal, crime suspense series. It is well written with solidly put-together characters and interesting back stories. I didn't start out liking Natalie, but the more I read, the more she grew on me. I look forward to reading her next adventure. The other characters were credible.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Convictions is Caro Land’s (pseudonym of bestselling author Caroline England) latest book, and although described as a thriller, with elements of both psychological and legal thriller, it doesn't really read like a thriller at all; yes, there was mild suspense but I feel it was slightly disingenuous to label it as anything more and can see this rubbing those who pick it up thinking it is a thriller up the wrong way from the outset. However, as with everything, this is strictly subjective. That said, I felt it was well written and decently plotted and I enjoyed trucking through it in a mere couple of hours before bed. It is a somewhat light-hearted family drama and will very much appeal to those who appreciate women’s fiction/chick-lit, and due to this will likely appeal to a great many readers.

This certainly has the potential to become a series but for it interest me it would have to move from a drama filled with gossip mongers, as well as touching on some more serious topics, towards the type of book I thought I had signed up for. I would consider trying another of Ms Land’s novels should it have more of the characteristics we are accustomed to being present in an accomplished thriller, and I have no qualms with disclosing how much of a fan I have been of her thrillers under the name Caroline England, so I know exactly what superbly gripping, meaty stories she is capable of producing. Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC.

Convictions is a fun entertaining book with well developed characters but is more of a drama book than a legal thriller . Enjoyable read and will look forward to reading the next one in the series

“Convictions” is the first book in a new legal thriller series written by bestselling author Caroline England, writing as Caro Land. Her psychological thriller “My Husband’s Lies” is the most popular novel on my book blog. Read the full review for "Convictions" there.

In a publishing world full of cookie cutter plots and mediocre books, I'm so glad I found Caroline England. I became a fan after reading "My Husband's Lies". I love psychological thrillers, and that book checked all the boxes for me. When "Convictions" came out, I knew I wanted to read it. It's a legal thriller, not psychological fiction. However, Caroline England's style is what makes her books stand out to me. It's always the perfect balance of description, narration, and dialogue. I had a feeling she wouldn't let me down with "Convictions". I was right.

When reviewing literature, we always talk about characterization. It’s important that the characters are well developed. They must *seem* as though they could be real. In “Convictions” by Caro Land, you forget the characters aren’t real. You can’t help but like Natalie Bach, and you can’t help but grow to like all the other characters as the story progresses.

“Convictions” is a legal thriller. However, because of the well developed characters, it also becomes part women’s fiction and part romantic suspense. Caro Land expertly balances out Natalie’s work as an attorney (the legal thriller aspect) with her broken heart over losing Jose, her relationships with the other characters, and the romantic tension between her and and her love interest.

Most legal thrillers put 80% of the focus on a case to keep the novel moving. Somehow, Caro Land manages a 50-50 blend without ever losing momentum or the reader’s interest. The book is full of red herrings, which leaves the truth always hiding on the other side of the next twist — both in the Julian’s legal case and the lives of the characters. The red herrings aren’t just there to distract the reader, however. Natalie encounters the same red herrings. The story unfolds to the reader at the same time the truth unfolds for Natalie.

“Convictions” by Caro Land is brilliantly crafted. Gripping, humorous at times, and heartfelt at others, it’s full of twists and great characters to suck you into the story and keep you there until the ultra-satisfying ending.

Thank you to Caro Land for providing a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this story. We get introduced to Natalie Bach who I liked.

Nearing forty years old she’s returned home to care for her mother. She’s also dealing with being dumped by her boyfriend for no reason. A positive is she gets offered her old job as a solicitor. When the bosses son is arrested for attempted murder she must find the truth..that’s easier said than done.

This is a good read that I read in an afternoon. There isn’t as much suspense as I thought there would be but I’d definitely recommend reading it.

This is a great start to a new series. The main character, Natalie, comes across as the human who seems to have all these situations that require her to pull out some interesting tools out of her toolbox to deal with and make it through the pitfalls of life. Every other character that interacts with Natalie throughout this book bring with them a familiar type in society that might strike close to home or just be something you had heard about. The plot of the story has some heartfelt gasping moments along with plenty of suspense to keep you guessing. I will be on the lookout for book 2 in this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader's copy of this book via The Book Reviewers Club on Facebook.

Oh, I really enjoyed this! A good puzzle and characters with oodles of personality!

From the very first, we're straight into this story; Natalie Bach, recently returned from abroad to care for her sick mother, is offered a job with her old firm which she grabs with both hands. After all, they say better the devil you know, don't they? But was it a wise move on Natalie's part - after all, they also say  you can never go backwards . . .

I'm a big fan of this author's crime thrillers under her own name; I was warned that this was a different style of book but she has embraced this new genre very successfully indeed! We get to know Natalie very quickly and, along with her business life, we are soon up to date with her home life, her time in Spain and her family. This is the kind of read where you just keep going as there is always something happening and you've just got to find out why! An absolutely fantastic read which kept me glued to the pages all the way through. I'm thrilled that there is a second book in the pipeline - can't wait! Beautifully written and a creatively skilled novel which fully earns all five glowing stars!

I purchased this book (and I'm glad I did); this is, as always, my honest, original and unbiased review.

This was an interesting read filled with legal and personal drama with Natalie right in the center of it all.

A failed relationship and an ill mother brought Natalie back home where she was offered a job in her old office. The boss's son was arrested and she had to find the truth.

My first book by author Caro Land, the first half had more of the shenanigans of the people in the office. I got to know the interpersonal relationships and the politics. Natalie was sweet and tough. I liked the way she got along with everyone and knew how to manage explosive situations.

The second half had the boss's son and colleagues making her work for her salary. A few truths came out, Natalie had to rush to deal with it. I liked the way she worked. There was romance and heartbreak, but she persevered. I was more aghast about the happenings in her personal life than professional.

The story gave the vibe of a gossipy television series. It was fun and entertaining. I wanted an amalgamation of The Good Wives with Suits. I got more of the Desperate Housewives in suits. Overall, it was a good read. More drama than suspense. Quite entertaining.

Natalie is back in town, returning from Mallorca to the firm after several years enjoying life as the landlord of her very own Spanish bar with her wayward boyfriend, Jose. Her reality check came when she received a call from her mum’s next-door neighbour explaining that Anna, her rock, had been found on the floor after suffering a stroke. Without thinking she heads home to help Anna get back on her feet and then decides to stay. So, with a heavy heart, she contacts her old boss, Jack, in the hope that there will be something available at her old law firm in the city.

Jack instantly takes Nat back much to the outward disapproval of his partner, Wesley. Originally at Law School together, Nat and Wesley had mixed in the same group and had even been known to flirt occasionally. But that was then; now she would prefer to keep her distance and stay away from his loathing stare.

She doesn’t need to worry about bumping into Wes too frequently however, because just like old times, Jack is keeping her busy with cases he would prefer to keep away from prying eyes.

First up is a case involving his estranged son Julian, who is currently being held on assault charges against his pregnant girlfriend, Aisha. Within hours of her return, Nat can honestly say it feels like she has never been away and is soon being used once again as Jack’s confidant rather than working on profitable Goldman Law cases like everyone else in the company.

Unsure of her place, and feeling a bit like a meddling busybody, Nat picks up not only the cases Jack has specifically labelled for her eyes only but also the jobs that Wes and Jack’s wife and partner, Catherine, don’t want to undertake. From auditing cases to making potentially newsworthy, embarrassing family issues disappear it would appear that Nat has become the partners’ lackey.

It is Wesley’s attitude to her that finally gets to her, however – the abrupt conversations, the sullen expressions every time they pass each other, the frosty messages left. They were friends. They went to university together. She thought that they could have even had feelings for one another before his wife Andrea, but perhaps she was mistaken.

At nearly 40 though, should she really care what people like Wesley think of her? Is everything as it first seems, or has Nat once again jumped to conclusions, just like she did during her younger years?

Convictions by Caro Land is the first of a series of court room dramas

My Thoughts on Convictions

This is unlike any other lawyer novel I have read. As you would expect, the narrative unfolds across a series of cases that the law firm is working through, but the cases are simply a background setting for the main storyline which features Nat and Wes.

It is the friction building between these two that led me to race through the pages. I wanted to know how it would end. Could they end up being civilised to one another or would the hostility between them grow further? Was there more to their relationship then either of them was prepared to admit during the early chapters?

There are also some tough topics mentioned, although not in a lengthy manner. Issues like sexual assault, entrapment, and attempted murder are broached alongside abuse of power, marital affairs, and Munchausen by proxy. In fact, on reflection, it should have been quite a heavy novel to plod through, but it was anything but.

I finished Convictions late last night. There was no way I was going to go to sleep until I had! This has been a real page turner for me. I’m only sorry that I’m this late to the party.
I’m not sure I’ve ever read any crime thrillers/mysteries written from the perspective of a solicitor before, but I really enjoyed the legal aspects of this story. Natalie Bach is a brilliant character. I warmed to her straight away. I loved the fact that she had returned home from Mallorca to be there for her mother, Anna, who had suffered a stroke, but had thankfully recovered well. Anna is a lovely character too. I found it interesting following Natalie’s progress finding her feet in the legal world again having run a bar in Mallorca and being dumped by her boyfriend, finding herself single again as she approaches her fortieth birthday. That can’t be easy for anyone. It doesn’t seem to take her long before she finds herself well and truly in the thick of things. She certainly works with some interesting characters! I think Gavin Savage is my favourite. Loved him!
I found Natalie’s relationship with Wes quite fascinating, although I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about it all for a good chunk of the story. The chemistry between them is palpable but their circumstances are far from ideal for the start of a new romance. I did hope there would be a happy ending, one way or another though.
As for the cases Natalie finds herself involved with, well what can I say…. It just goes to show that you never know what might go on behind closed doors or what anyone might be capable of when pushed to their limits. This story also puts a whole new spin on ‘a woman scorned’.
There are many shocking moments throughout this book.
This book is a completely compelling, fast-paced story full of secrets, lies, control, obsession, revenge and addiction but also humour, love, friendship, family loyalty and forgiveness. I LOVED it, and I read it in two days which anyone who knows me will know that’s quick for me. An excellent start to a new series. I can’t wait to read book 2!

If you enjoyed the TV series The Split, then you are going to love Convictions, the first title in Caro Land’s new legal series. Full of drama, intrigue and a smidgen of romance, Convictions is a gripping read that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end.

They say life begins at 40, but for Natalie Bach – who still has some time to go before reaching this milestone birthday – this couldn’t be further from the truth. She’s returned home to care for her sick mother and she has just been dumped by her long-term boyfriend without having been given a single explanation. Natalie is distraught and upset – being dumped and unemployed when approaching forty was not exactly where she pictured she would be when she was making her plans for the future. But just when she is about to give up all hope, it looks like her luck might be in and things might be about to change when she is offered her old job at Goldman Law.

Having been struggling to figure out what she was going to do next, Natalie jumps at the chance to prove herself in her old stomping ground and her boss has got one hell of a first job for her. His estranged son Julian has just been arrested for attempted murder and he wants Natalie to get to bottom of whether Julian is innocent or guilty. With obstacles and red herrings aplenty, her first assignment is going to be anything but easy, but luckily for Natalie, fellow solicitor Gavin Savage is close by to offer her a much needed hand when required.

Can Natalie – with Gavin’s assistance – manage to uncover the truth about her boss’s son? Has he been wrongfully accused? Or are some secrets better kept dead and buried? Natalie is keen to find out – but only if she can stop her personal problems from getting in the way of her investigation.
Caro Land certainly knows how to tell a good story and Convictions is a gripping and compelling read that deftly blends crime, suspense and family drama into a fantastic read which readers will struggle to put down. Natalie is a terrific character readers are simply going to love spending time with and they are sure to admire and cheer for her in her quest for justice.

Although I felt this book was more women’s fiction than spine-chilling crime thriller, I thoroughly enjoyed Convictions and will certainly read further titles in this series.

My normal read is Sci-fi and fantasy with the odd thriller and drama story thrown in, but as 2020 has staggered through the months I thought a change in pace wouldn’t hurt. And it didn’t.

A friend recommended this book and I am glad she did. It was a pleasure to read. The characters felt real, the scenes all believable and the attention on the little things kept me smiling and nodding my head. I won’t say I struggled for the first 25% of the book, because it was never hard to read, but I was waiting for something dramatic to happen. However, the story line presented just enough intrigue to keep me interested and then before I knew it I was reading past midnight and picturing myself in Nat’s shoes.

Caro made me feel the space her characters entered, and in one case even smell the character. All up I found the book to be a great read where the villains, when revealed, get the justice my own mind was happy with.

Natalie Bach left the law behind when she moved to Spain to start a new life with her boyfriend. When she returns home to look after her ill mother, she is unceremoniously dumped, with no explanation. With no income she is forced to return the law firm she worked with, and reacquaint with colleagues.

Tasked with investigating the attempted murder charge that is made against her bosses son, Natalie gets caught in a twisted web which weaves together the past she has shared with her colleagues, as well as the lives of their families.

The book was gripping, the characters all believable and I liked Natalie. She was easily relatable to, and was coping with a sudden change in circumstances the best she can, whilst trying to keep everyone happy. This is the first book in a new series featuring Natalie, and I am already looking forward to the next one.

When I first started this book I wondered how it would sustain a plot about a lawyer returned to England to look after her sick mother after the breakdown of a relationship abroad. However I was 20% in before I realised it and was engaged with the story and Nat until the end. It's hard to write a review without spoilers but you definitely won't be disappointed. It's a nice change from the police-focused crime dramas, not pretentious or patronising in its explanations of the legal system. I'm looking forward to book two of the series.

Natalie finds herself back in England after leaving Spain due to her mothers ailing health. This leads to her being unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend. She is broke, heartbroken and feeling self concious about having to return to the firm she left behind and trying to pick up the pieces of her life.
Her boss Jack's son has been accused of murder and Natalies job is to try and prove his innocence. This story is full of twists and turns and dysfuntional people. A good read will be looking for more of this authors work.

I have read all of Caroline England's previous books and enjoyed every one of them.

Caroline is better known for her dark, domestic thrillers but Convictions is the first book in a new legal crime suspense series featuring solicitor Natalie Bach. It has a lighter feel to it, with some humour also thrown in that had me laughing out loud.

This book is well written, with great characters, and I am really looking forward to reading more in the series.

Really good book!!! It was very different then the books I have read. It had a lot of mysterious happenings in it that kept me interested. I could not guess where the story was going to go and what would happen next which is something I loved about this book. My heart raced at some parts of the book as well. It is hard to describe my feelings about this book but to say I really enjoyed it. There were parts that I felt were slow but I also felt that those parts were meant to slow the story down some. I really look forward to reading book 2 in the series.

This was a great book and had me hooked. I loved Caroline England's other work so excited to read this and wasn't disappointed I enjoyed and could relate to the legal and solicitors theme as it was based in a law firm as I previously have worked in this setting before. Looking forward to book two in this series coming out in the summer.

This is the first in a new crime series, which if they're anything like this book will be very good. Natalie Bach returns to Goldman Law after a five year sabbatical. However has she bitten off more than she can chew? Ahead of her lie hidden secrets, families in turmoil, love triangles and slimy rich clients. Life is not made easy for this solicitor in her return to Manchester.

There are surprises and shocks round every corner as Natalie tries solving other people's problems as well as her own insecurities. This is a well written book that keeps you guessing as to what is ahead and introduces us to the life of an aspiring solicitor who is not afraid to go in where it hurts.
