She is a Japanese manga artist known for creating The Magic Touch and Oresama Teacher which have both been serialized on the Hana to Yume magazine. Tsubaki began drawing manga in her first year of high school. She was soon selected to be in the top 10 of Hana to Yume Mangaka Course, and subsequently won the Big Challenge contest.
Love is in the air, but there’s manga to write! As secrets stand revealed, it becomes clear that Nozaki should probably never be allowed near manga ever again. But, luckily for us, he will be.
Okay, first off, there is nothing here as laugh out loud funny as the biscuit gags from last volume, which might be one of the funniest Nozaki bits in the history of the series. Luckily, some stuff gets pretty close.
There’s a lot of my favourite throughline of Nozaki being possibly the worst mangaka in history and I never get tired of watching his research and plotting go haywire every time. There’s a certain level and type of mayhem I want from these volumes and this one nails that benchmark.
Hori and Kashima’s budding romance is being heavily mined for some very silly laughs, which lets this volume come out swinging as Mikoshiba and Hori finally come face to face working on Nozaki’s manga, but Mikoshiba’s position as Kashima’s best friend puts him in an awkward spot (far as he can tell).
The bonus manga about the hygrophila pinnatifida might steal this one all on its own, but the whole thing is joyous.
Meanwhile, Sakura and Nozaki manage to… whatever it is they do. Sakura’s boundless enthusiasm for Nozaki’s body makes for some very funny moments (speaking of not being allowed near things, she should never be allowed near a karate gi, ever) and Nozaki gets another heart stopper of his own from the most innocuous moment possible.
Honestly, this whole thing would just be me praising various chapters. Nozaki’s live tweeting goes so amazingly wrong, flip phones live for a brief moment, and Nozaki’s face game in his manga is so bad that he manages to cause more problems trying to fix them, as usual.
It’s delightful and silly and remarkably consistent. Sure, if you’re here for the romance… uh… well, I don’t know why you would ever be showing up for it, frankly. This is one of the best four-koma ever made and I say it every review because it remains true.
The characters are solid, the jokes are tweaked enough to stay fresh, and it’s impressive how often they can keep iterating on the same thing for new gags. Long may it continue to be just this nonsensical.
4.5 stars - no biscuits, sure, but there’s still tons of material in this one to get plenty of chuckles out. As such, the sheer quantity of quality pushes it up, even without a biscuit to be seen.
A lot of fan service from my favorite couples: Hori hugging and comforting Kashima was top shit. Mikorin learning judo from Mayu and then getting his ass kicked was hilarious. And of course, Sakura fangirling over Nozaki and him being nice to her little brother was so cute. Even Seo’s older brother has now confessed to Miyako!
I mean, all of them always make me laugh, but sometimes they share cute moments too. They never fail to make my day brighter.
me importa muy poco que los romances no avancen como dicen muchos pero la realidad es que. están avanzando un montón. capaz para el año 20 de serialización nozaki se pone las pilas. van 14 años ya. y el tiempo pasa de todas maneras.!
Idk, I struggled to finish this book even though it’s not a large volume. I am getting the vibe of Oresama now…where we aren’t getting to the point. It’s dragging. Still funny but I’m ready for some confessions.
Enggak jadi 'cie' deh.
Seseorang, tolong laporkan Chiyo supaya berhenti bertingkah mencurigakan. Seseorang, tolong laporkan teman Chiyo yang makin lama juga makin mencurigakan.
I loved this one! Some brief thoughts on volume 14:
Seo and Wakamatsu are still such a mess. At least they had half a normal conversation…
Chapter 132 is so freaking funny. And… is Nozaki… feeling something??? His note to Chiyo made me crack up, but I feel like I didn’t get the full humor of it. I’m assuming Nozaki’s bad handwriting changed the meaning. I wish there had been a translator’s note.
Ryousuke chapters are always WILD omg. His misunderstanding everything will never not be funny.
Chapter 134 is the funniest chapter in a while. So so tragic. Miyako, please don’t stoop this low… But actual romantic development??? Unheard of in this manga! How exciting! Now we’ll get to see a ton of mishaps and misunderstandings in Miyako and Ryousuke’s relationship.
I think getting to throw Mikoshiba around is the happiest Mayu’s ever been. 😂
Kashima wanting to be loved by Hori and his girlfriend. We continue to stan a bi icon.
“Confused, want love but hated.” Kashima… 🥲🥲🥲 Chapter 137 is a rollercoaster!
“She’s doing a terrible job pretending to be a regular person,” could be said about every character lol.
This had to have been one of my favorite volumes in the series!
The past few volumes have really built the cast 'out,' in my opinion; out in the sense of more characters, not necessarily deeper character development. We've gotten to see siblings of the core cast members, coworkers, etc. And we've gotten to see how those characters relate to our core 7 (or so) crew. It has been fun! But this volume took us back to a lot of the original 7(ish), especially Nozaki and his tech illiteracy, and I loved it! I love all the characters but Nozaki and Chiyo are the reason I started this series, and I cannot die happy until I know if they get together or not.
Who would love this: Fans of the older volumes in the series will love this one! If you are new to the series, don't start here. But you'll enjoy the series overall if you like: shoujo, slice-of-life, and high school style manga.
Sometimes I literally can't understand individual lines in this manga, and it's hard to tell if the translation's off or whether the author's humor is missing me. Despite these occasional mismatches, I chuckled quite a few times while reading this volume, especially as it becomes more and more evident that Nozaki, as a mangaka, could be described as a hack. His manga stories are inspired by his real life surroundings to an embarrassing extent, and he draws his background characters literally identically until given some guidance from Mikoshiba. In the meantime, Hori and Kashima's relationship maybe doesn't progress all that much, but they do come just a tiny smidgen closer to understanding each other thanks to a play script written by Nozaki.
This got some out loud laughs and chuckles all the way to the end. I'm not here for the overarching romance. It's just hilarious and I love how it can go in so many differing directions between the actual characters and the in-manga manga characters and all the misunderstandings. It's amazing. I love this series.
I've missed this series so much. I didn't even realize this volume had come out until I saw it at the bookstore today. The characters are all so loveable. The expressions and writing makes me laugh out loud. Just reading this volume made me want to rewatch the anime. I'd recommend this for people who like angsty, funny, slow burn stories that also feature great friendships.
I found myself laughing so much while reading this volume!!! I cherish this manga series so much!!! I love all of the characters and their silly interactions with each other!!! This is such a heartwarming slice-of-life manga!!! Volume 14 is definitely one of my favorite volumes in the series so far!!!
I finally caught up and now I’m so sad because it seems like volumes come out slower than usual with this series!! Wahhhhh! *uglies cries* I freakin love this series and these characters. I’ll wait (and suffer) for as long as it takes.. LOL
Been a bit, but I felt like I was able to jump back in pretty easily. Still remember a lot of the characters and their dynamics. Felt like a lot of interesting scenarios this time too
