This is one of those books I didn’t love, but I didn’t hate it either. I think my main issues stem from the characterization of Piper Summers, in that I am a reader that struggles to understand when a supposedly intelligent woman (she’s training to be a vet) keeps acting like an idiot.
"You’re not one for rules are you?"
I suppose there could be an argument that she is a little scatty and eccentric, and I wouldn’t disagree with that, but it was just everything else in-between that just became too much, especially when you take into the account that the author has a knack of blowing pretty much every situation, scenario and plot point completely out of proportion.
"I will take great care of your wiener."
Again not an issue on its own, but this is a busy, busy story-line, and Piper literally just blundered from one disaster to the next. I didn’t really feel any connection with Aiden either, and the constant ‘interruptions’ in relation to them hitting a 'Home-Run' together lost their endearing quality very quickly.
There is a bit of a whodunit going on in this one as well, with the potential list of villains building as the book progresses, and I think if that and the relationship between them had been the main focus Must Love Wieners could have possibly been a book I loved. There is potential in this as a series, and I love any books that feature animals as part of their make-up, the author gave Colin the Dachshund a great voice, even though he didn’t talk.
Not a total winner for me, but I would happily try something else from this author in the future.
ARC generously provided via Netgalley, in exchange for the above honest review.
First and foremost I got to say that I saw this book on Netgalley and one clicked it because of the title, yes I know I can be very immature at the best of the times but how cool is the title Must love Wieners?
3.5-4 Mr Handshake Stars.
Piper Summers is an interesting lady. She is studying to become a vet and has three jobs to help with paying her bills. A telegram singer, a taxi driver and a pizza delivery gal. Her one man in her life is her Dachshund Collin. Amongst her many jobs and her studying and practicum as a vet she also volunteers at the Dachshund Rescue Centre.
Piper is a free spirit, strong, resilient and I love her as a character. The one thing I didn’t like that came out of her mouth the whole time was the word ‘fine’ Yes it did my nut in. Fine, fine, fine, fine oh and did I mention fine. But she is also a very proud person whereas there is a time and a place for everything having false pride doesn’t help but I must say that her character develops in that respect.
Her last telegram didn’t go so well as that she gave the bloke a lap dance although that isn’t part of the show.
Aidan Caldwell is the CEO of his own company he has an embarrassing encounter with a telegram cowgirl but still can’t get her out of his head so he runs after her and hops into her taxi and so the banter begins.
In that moment when they meet and talk out in front of the building she loses two of her jobs, the taxi gets stolen and well her day couldn’t get any worse. That is until Aidan comes to pick up his rescue dog and meets Piper being dry humped by Toby the German Shephard.
Aidan is a big shot CEO and well I had the urge to take the stick out of his arse. He changes throughout the book. He is interested in Piper but he doesn’t know how to show it. There were times where I found Aidan adorable like a little lost puppy but there were other times where I wasn’t impressed with his behaviour. He will do anything to get to see more of Piper.
“Will you be my dog walker?” Piper stared into those eyes and felt herself get sucked right in. She wasn’t sure that she could say no even if she could afford to. She nodded. “I will take great care of your Wiener.”
They have the banter and they have the chemistry.
As Aidan is slightly socially awkward he has a way with dealing with that.
“If you’re ever feeling caught off guard or have lost control over a situation you can’t go wrong with a good, firm handshake. It’s like a reflex now. A nervous twitch.”
After his wild days. He doesn’t mix business and pleasure but for Piper he makes an exception there is some miscommunication in this book for naught really. But still funny as hell to read. Every. Single. Moment. Of. It. But there is a seriousness to the story as well.
Yes the book is hilarious with Piper and her costumes for her job. But the rescue centre is in danger. And there is such a love of animals in the book. It was touching, engaging as well as exciting and kept me on the age of my seat. There is suspense and for the life of me I couldn’t predict who the culprit was in the end but it all made sense.
This is where I agreed with Aidan.
“I’m fine,” she said, emphasis on the word “fine” He laughed, a little crazed she thought. “You’re not fine. Stop saying you’re fine. A single word has never irritated me so much in my life.” Mine either there mate Aidan. Mine either. A dreaded word like nice.
Ms. Griffin did a fantastic job in the dog/owner/human interaction. I’ve tried to persuade my husband to get a Dachs but he’s said no to that idea. Collin & Sophie are the real little gems of this story. I’m sucker for romances with animals and with children involved it always makes a story sweeter.
“I’ve needed you in my life for longer than I ever knew. To have someone that when you’re together, makes the weight of the world feel like a feather,”
“But I don’t want you to be just fine.” He squeezed her hands. “I want you to be amazing.”
What I would have liked to have seen? Maybe a reconciliation with her brother unless he turns up in the next books.
I can’t wait for Addison’s book who is a romantic at heart who believes in Pretty Woman & the Notebook. I like Pretty Woman but I detest the Notebook really not for me it is on par with Titanic and we all know what happened there. Yes the ship sunk! Sorry mini rant is over.
I also look forward to Zoe’s the cynic wedding planners book.
3.5 stars. Must Love Wieners is the first in a series by Casey Griffin. It is a mixture of romance, mystery, danger, humour and dachshunds.
Piper has been working hard to become a vet, it has taken her eight years to make her way through the study and clinic work. She has become used to looking out for herself and finds it difficult to accept help from those who just might be able to give it. She runs a tightrope of a variety of money making jobs to make ends meet. Often she doesn't make ends meet and that puts her in the black books of her landlord.
Aiden is a wealthy young man who has taken over his father's business and is determined to make good. He also finds himself attracted to the feisty Piper and wants to help her in any way he can. He adopts Sophie from the dachshund rescue centre where Piper works. As it turns out Sophie is very good friends with Piper's dachshund Colin. These dogs might be small (Piper hides him when coming and going to her lodgings because you guessed it, no dogs allowed), but if they sense someone is bad they make great ankle biters.
Piper finds herself in a series of events - all of which endanger her life. Who is out to get her? One person or a whole flotilla? And just when it all gets too much she finds out Aiden might be involved too.
I enjoyed the read and liked the characters. I found the final denouement all a little 'too much' to be believable, however it was a sweet ending and I certainly wish Piper all the best as she steps up to achieve as a vet. She has certainly earned it after all the terrible jobs she took on to achieve her goal.
I have to admit, the first thing that caught my attention was the title of the book. When I saw it and actually looked at the cover I knew I wanted it. Not only do I love books that include stories that include animals, but I loved the humor in the title. This is the first time that I've heard of Casey Griffin, but I am excited to pick up her next book in this series. This is the first book in a new series and can be read as a standalone.
Piper is an extremely hard worker that is trying to put herself through school to be a veterinarian. She is working 3 jobs at the beginning of this story: taxi driver, pizza delivery driver, and singing telegram person. She also volunteers at a dachshund rescue in her spare time, with plans to be the vet for them when she finishes school. After being fired from 2 of her jobs in one day, Aiden hires her as his dog walker. Piper likes her independence and has trouble accepting help from others.
Aiden was a little tougher of a character to figure out. At first he is very closed off and ran hot and cold for a good part of the book. He was a very serious business man, but when he was around Piper she had a way of getting him to lighten up and have fun. He's a very caring and sweet guy.
The mystery aspect of this story keeps the story moving really well, but the ending seemed a little unbelievable to me. That's probably my biggest gripe about this book. Other than that, I really loved the light-hearted humor and innuendo throughout the story. Add in the fact that there were Pride & Prejudice, Pretty Woman, and The Notebook references and I'm a pretty happy girl.
** I received an ARC of this title via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. **
2.5 stars but rounding up to three because I do love wieners. Wiener dogs, that is. And this book has a great dachshund character. As for the humans, the two main characters--veterinary student Piper and love interest billionaire CEO, Aiden, were okay, mostly likable and inoffensive. The story was mildly interesting, but the romance was a bit on the tepid side. I would have enjoyed the book much more if it hadn't been for two main problems:
1. The reliance on the horrible "misunderstanding" as a plot device. Several times Piper hears gossip or overhears and misinterprets something, decides that she and Aiden are not destined to be together, sulks with hurt feelings and then...oh, it was just a misunderstanding. All better now!
2. There were too many whackadoodles per capita cluttering up this book. The female characters, especially--barring Piper and her two besties from the dachshund rescue--are prone to bizarre behavior, including: an irate former vet student who has it in for Piper; Aiden's crazy jealous personal assistant; his rude and sneering receptionist; and a television reporter who is either seriously unprofessional or in need of some medication. While there are fewer crazy male characters, the author didn't leave the men out entirely, as we have both a stalker and a mysterious bad guy. Maybe you are wondering how Aiden and Piper found any time for romance with all this going on, and I did feel that their relationship definitely took a back seat to these other shenanigans.
Overall, this book was just meh for me. I didn't hate it, but I didn't especially like it, either. I doubt I'll be tempted to continue the series.
Read for Unapologetic Romance Readers 2017 challenge--billionaire/millionaire category.
Rated 3.5 - MUST LOVE WIENERS by Casey Griffin features a quirky, soon-to-be veterinarian heroine whose variety of part-time jobs get her into more doo-doo than a box full of puppies. Her love interest is a wealthy CEO who shakes the heroine’s hand so much that even I began to wonder if he’d ever get brave enough to kiss her. Add in some mystery, plus attempted murder, stolen cars, arson, a dog with a leg fetish, a dachshund rescue facility in trouble, plus a loony reporter who is like a dog with a bone, and you’ve got a romantic comedy similar to a cozy mystery with enough humor to make everyone smile.
Contemporary romantic comedy or comedic mysteries aren’t always a hit for me, but I couldn’t resist a book about a rescue facility. I don’t read a lot of novels like this, but I keep trying because they sound so cute and I love books that make me laugh. Although I didn’t laugh hysterically at the wacky things that happened to this poor heroine, I did smile an awful lot from the middle to the end. This book is an easy, fast read with a pair so charming that their relationship makes the story worth reading.
Piper and Aiden are complete opposites so it’s hard to imagine them together as a couple, at first. It’s easy to recognize that Aiden really needs to lighten up. He takes life and himself too seriously. Piper is just what he needs because she messes up constantly, yet she has a heart of gold. It really helps that they both own rescued dachshunds who are already well-acquainted. The two dogs’ puppy love is sure to rub off on their humans.
Each chapter in this book has a cute dog-themed subtitle that made me want to guess what was going to happen next. Not only are there loads of dog-related phrases mixed into the story, but there are plenty of dogs as well. Pooch people will love the references, especially if you’re overly fond of dachshunds.
Some of the scenarios seemed a bit over-the-top and I grew impatient, so I started to skim toward the end. I really liked the couple, so I was eager for them to iron out their differences before they were convinced of their forever love. There were some scenes that seemed to stretch beyond what was necessary and I was ready for a conclusion. It didn’t deter my reading as much as it sped it up.
Author Casey Griffin debuts an entertaining series with MUST LOVE WIENERS. Watch for book two of the RESCUE DOG ROMANCE series, BEAUTY AND THE WIENER in winter 2017. Get your silly on and enjoy a doggone-crazy, happy-ever-after with pooches and people who work hard for their well-deserved yap of joy.

A very hard working Piper knows what it takes to put in the extra hours. Working multiple jobs just to finish what she loves and achieve her goal of becoming a veterinarian. But like real life, Piper had kinks thrown into her ideal plans, and has to roll with the punches. The only person (pup) she knows she can really rely on, is her sweet Dachshund, Colin.
Businessman Aiden really has led a boring life until Piper comes along. Having to grow up quickly at a young age and take on responsibility, he doesn't really know what it's like to be young and free. Piper end up being a singing telegram for him, and he can't wait to find out more about this mystery woman.
This story kept my attention throughout, throwing in mystery at the perfect times. Poor Piper...she works so hard to just to become a caretaker of animals and she can't even be thrown a bone! This is really a sweet read, and the added bonus of puppies (which I LOVE), made it a solid 4 star read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this contemporary romance. It's sexy, funny, has mystery, and it's heartwarming. Not to mention all the cute doggies...especially Colin & Sophie! I'm eager to read the other books in the series now.
Just came across this while working and how could I not?! The title was so cheesy and a little bit too on the nose for a romance. It was cute and definitely filled with plenty of dog related puns. There was a bit too much going on with the mystery for my tastes and not enough steaminess, but overall it was a fun read and I would recommend it.
Must Love Wieners by Casey Griffin Book #1: A Rescue Dog Romance Source: Netgalley My Rating: 4/5 stars My Review:
Piper Summers is just fine!
Aiden Caldwell does not mix business with pleasure!
Piper Summers is focused on her goals and is determined to accomplish everything without anyone else’s help. To get through vet school, she works multiple crappy jobs, lives in a ramshackle little apartment with her contraband dog, Colin, and spends every one of her precious free moments at the dachshund rescue center. With just a few weeks left in her final semester of school, Piper can make it as long as the universe cooperates.
Enter the universe with a sense of humor . . . .
In one afternoon, Piper manages to get fired from two of her crappy jobs and fall face first into the lap of the most stunningly gorgeous man she has ever met only to get up and sing to him. There’s no stopping a singing telegram girl! With no expectation of ever seeing him again, Piper is stunned when the stunner makes an appearance at the doggy rescue center where she volunteers. As if falling into his lap weren’t humiliating enough, the gorgeous man also knows Piper lost two of her jobs and is in a bad way, financially speaking. What else is there to do but offer her a job??
Aiden Caldwell never mixes business with pleasure but he may be willing to make an exception where Piper is concerned. Though her first and second impressions left something to be desired, Aiden is attracted to Piper and wants to know more about her. The getting to know her better becomes all the easier when Piper agrees to work for Aiden as dog walker to his rescue dachshund, Sophie. Aiden is stunningly wealthy, wants what’s best for Sophie, and is willing to help ease Piper’s way financially. Though she expects to work alone, Piper is surprised when, day after day, Aiden makes a point of accompanying her and the dogs to the park for some play time. On most occasions, Aiden acts interested but he runs hot and cold which often leaves both he and Piper confused. Keeping business and pleasure separate isn’t as easy as it sounds and things are about to get a whole lot worse.
Dating Aiden Caldwell is as thrilling as it is frustrating. Between the two of them, there is a lot of back luck which makes building a new relationship even more difficult. Aiden’s hot and cold comes out at the most inconvenient of times and one of the two of them is apparently being targeted by a crazy person. There’s the car that tries to run them down, there’s the vandalism of the doggy rescue center (which Aiden just happens to own), and there’s the vile behavior of one of Piper’s singing telegram customers and several of Aiden’s employees. While one or two of these things may be written off as pure coincidence, collectively, Aiden and Piper are worried and the police are proving to be of little help. Figuring out who is targeting one or both of them and surviving the next attack is of the utmost importance but mixed into the mystery is the distinct possibility that Aiden is a dirty, rotten bastard and the one behind all the awful.
The Bottom Line: I am always going to read a book that has dogs in it so it’s just a bonus when the book is also really good. Piper’s life is like a comedy of errors and with every new incident I just found myself shaking my head in disbelief. Piper really does have a crappy life for the time being and everything she loves and holds dear is being threatened. Aiden is the only seemingly good thing in her life but life with him comes with its own set of complications. Aiden is a good man who has some really funny rules about mixing his personal life and work. While he tries to do the right thing, Aiden often stumbles and has to dig himself out of a mess. This quirkiness makes for a sweet romance that is only enhanced by the presence of the two totally adorably Doxies. Because of all the action and drama, Must Love Wieners reads quickly, has a strong plot line, believable characters, and some really funny plays on the whole wieners thing. Overall, an enjoyable read and a good start to what is sure to be a fun series.
I still think the same about this book after rereading it. There's a great background and the MC's interactions and with the dogs are interesting but way too much happen to the heroine. I gave 3.75 the first time but I'm downgrading it for a 3 because this time I was more pissed to read about the OTT things and how Piper could never get a break.
Review of 2017
Witty, funny, sexy, cute doggy, but a little over the top at times.
I don't envy Piper Summers's life. I was exhausted just reading about her trying to juggle her three jobs, while being in her last year of veterinary school, and she still find the time to volunteer at the Dashund Rescue Center. But it was entertaining to see her deliver pizzas, driving a taxi and sing telegrams in racy costume at the same time.
So how can you be sure a man never forget you ? Find yourself in the most unimaginable embarrassing situations every time you see him :p After an humiliating first meeting where she had to sing a telegram for CEO Aiden Caldwell and her taxi cab was stolen, Piper lose two of her three jobs. When they meet again at the rescue center where Aiden goes to pick up his new pet Sophie, he offer Piper a job as a dog walker.
Piper need the money and she loves dog, and it gives opportunity for her dachshund to stay in touch with his furry friend Sophie, so she takes the job despite knowing and worrying that being near Aiden could lead to complication and temptation. She doesn't really believe something serious could happen between them because they come from different worlds. Piper is independent and have trouble accepting help from others, so when the hero offer her money she find it insulting.
Aiden was harder to characterize. He's formal but not without a sense of humor, but he was hard to follow sometime, being quite hot and cold. He doesn't flaunt his money but it's like he doesn't understand it's not the solution to all problems and that it doesn't make Piper a stubborn person, it's just that she value working hard to get what she want. He say he doesn't want to mix business with pleasure, but he didn't really fought his attraction for the heroine and accept it easily, never second guessing it. That's usually a good thing but it just didn't fit with the character we were talked about. When incidents and threats begin to happen in a short time and Piper's life is in danger, they'll have to find who's out to get her.
The last part of the book for me was a bit too much. It was catastrophe after catastrophe, the poor heroine just couldn't get a break from all the intimidation and life threatening situations and for me it felt too soap opera-ish with all the crazy chicks and too many out of the ordinary things happening at the same time.
Having said that, I liked it enough to read the next book because I really liked that it's romance with a little bit of mystery. And I have to say there's things I didn't saw coming. I also liked the humor and the play on words with dog :p And I liked that Piper gave a "voice" to her dog when she imagine his thoughts according to his expression or his attitude.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book discusses the male anatomy like it's the entire plot. Heck, I didn't know it was possible to be this aware of men and their ermm... natural endowments until I read this book. This guy has more angles and planes on his face, torso and back than a whole icosahedron. His arms and their visible definition (through long sleeved dress shirts) have been mentioned at least a 1000 times in this 300 something page book. I get it, this man is Henry Cavill-meets-Chris Evans-gorgeous; I get it, but talking about it every two paragraphs is a bit of an overkill.
"I will take great care of your wiener."
Is this a pun you can say to your potential boss on the day of your interview? I dunno, but Piper did. Piper is working hard, setting goals, trying to put herself through school and make something of herself. Along comes Aiden Caldwell, and logic and reason leaves the room. And that is basically the entire plot.
I can understand finding someone attractive and obsessing over them, but the heroine's internal thirst monologue got old pretty fast. Regardless of how serious of a situation she is in, she wouldnt stop thinking about his hair, arms and height. She also spends a good amount of time wondering what's underneath his suit while she is in the middle of being fired from her job, getting her taxi being stolen, trying to sort out an arson attack, a dog shelter being broken in etc etc. I mean given her present struggle of making ends meet, achieving financial independence, paying overdue rent, putting herself through school, and working her many jobs, Piper seems to have a lot of spare time on her hands to simply daydream about some guy's arms she met a day ago.
I appreciate some good sexual tension but theirs was so forced and sometimes so cheesy I couldnt help but cringe. The minute she met Aiden, Piper has been reading into everything he does, for instance she is disappointed that he shook her hand as a goodbye in their first meeting instead of a more intimate gesture. He shows up to check on his property that has been broken into and she is hoping it's actually to check on her (and this is like only ONE day after they met). And then the third time they meet, she has this sudden urge to straddle him and kiss him while the man is driving a convertible and talking about his dead father. I mean none of it made sense to me, I simply could not connect the dots. I personally dont like plots where characters spend all their time assusing unrealistic things without using basic logic (and common sense), especially if the book describes the characters as highly intelligent, "top of their class", survivors, go-getters etc. Basically Piper acted like an idiot 90% of the time and I had a hard time understanding her actions.
I couldn't make any connection with Aiden either. Other than him being drop dead gorgeous, there wasnt much I could take away from the story about his character.
I did like that the book gave the dogs a voice, it was fun reading about the animals interacting with each other and their humans. That bit was definitely cute.
I think this book has the potential to be a decent romcom, but definitely not something I'd be crazy about.
I fell in love while reading Must Love Wieners. Colin and Sophie are so cute together. I wanted to read more about them and I could not get enough of their fun and games. These two dachshunds stole my heart from the moment they entered the story. Before you ask, yes I had 2 Wieners in a previous life. They were so adorable but didn’t like hearing a no. Casey Griffin captured the essence of those dogs in her book, they are so stubborn but looking at them it is making every single person melt as ice under the sun.
Colin is present throughout the story. Knowing that I chose to read this book especially for the dogs, it made it a key element that contributed to its success. Colin and Sophie are treated as human characters and that how it should be when dogs are part of a story. It is refreshing to have them not as a fixture but having some character developments as well.
The story main focus is the dog rescue shelter and it felt as if I was there and hearing the dogs barks and play. The shelter mission is to take the dogs that would normally be euthanized and heal them. Once it is done, it is time to find a happy home for them. Piper is volunteering at that center. It is one of her many occupations while finishing studying to become a veterinarian. She is a character full of humor and she is stubborn (a little like a dachshund). She wants to do it all by herself, even though money is a problem. She is juggling between 3 jobs : taxi driver, singing telegram and delivering pizza. She is a little overwhelm and underperforming at them, but she desperately needs the money. Her brother is a big shot lawyer and has a lot of money. She despises him and his money and vowed to work hard to gain money. She is not one that will ask for help and she won’t accept it if someone tries to make it easier for her. Aiden is at the other end of the spectrum. He is a CEO of a big investment firm and has little time for anything else than being serious. He has a lot of money and works hard to protect his father legacy. As soon as he lays his eyes on Piper, he knew he was in trouble. As a twist of fate, Aiden went to the dog rescue shelter to adopt Sophie and he and Piper met again. He asked Piper to walk Sophie when he is at work, and little by little Aiden and Piper get to know each other. Aiden is a loving character, all about not mixing business with pleasure and he has a golden heart.
A lot is going on in this story. Piper is on the receiving end of a lot of threats and incidents. It is full of mysteries and each time that we think we know who is behind those actions, Casey Griffin is shifting the focus in a whole new direction. We get to know what really happened at the end of the story and I have not seen it coming. I love this book. It is heartwarming, stressful and full of humor. It is very unfortunate that I have to wait to have the chance to read the second book, I want to read it right now!
*I have been gifted this book by Jeep Diva in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adore books where their are animals involved and since Casey Griffin is a new author to me the first thing I noticed about this book was the Autumn cover and the dog. This is the first book in A Rescue Dog Romance and I can already guarantee you I'll be picking up book two!
This story really starts off hilarious! Piper is trying to put herself through by working different types of jobs but after the day from hell and being fired from two jobs in just one day she doesn't know exactly how she going to pay rent and finish school. When her client offers her a dog walking job that she ends up taking a whole new trouble starts and Piper is out of her element with this one.
Right away I loved Piper, she was funny, spirited, determined and had a big heart. Her hell of a day was so funny that I couldn't stop laughing but she pulled through like a champ and kept on going. I really enjoyed how Griffin put her character together and really made her work for a living.
Aiden on the other hand was Piper's total opposite and a little harder to connect with. He's the CEO and has a different life then Piper but once his character started to come together through the story I saw why these two had a connection.
While these two might have had a connection right away it took some time for them to come together as a couple which was fun for me. Griffin didn't make that easy with all the mysterious things that were going on around them but in the end I was very pleased.
I thought the story was done well and I truly enjoyed it. The ending was a little different and I did find it hard to see it as believable but overall I thought the story was well written and liked how the characters developed throughout the entire book.
For a light hearted fun read I would suggest giving Must Love Wieners a read!
Let me keep this short. The couple is great Aiden and Piper had good chemistry most of the time (not all of the time due to lacking on both parts)
The story itself is great, who doesn't love stories about saving dogs and struggling veterinary students against the odds.
Throw in some mystery and a couple of slimy characters, some near death experiences and you have a GREAT story.
Now let us see why the author almost ruined it.
1. The heroine is supposed to be a "top of her class" veterinary student but spend a LOT of time looking like "Brainless Barbie" 2. Her pride was hard to separate from her stupidity at times. I enjoy independence but this came across as abject stupidity too many times. 3. The author spent a good amount of time making us hate her brother (and I did) but did NOTHING with it. My revenge junkie was NOT amused, there should have been some bit of closure on that small subplot. 4. I have NEVER been a fan of plots that revolved around character A does not tell charterer B something that would solve everything. 5. The last in the list is a bugaboo of many authors, verbose writing, this was a great 250-275 page story told in 368 pages.
So in the end I give it 3 Stars, I really wanted to give it more since I DID read it in 1 day and the base story WAS good but I scanned a lot to get to the meat of the story too many times. You might be more forgiving but even on a good day 4 Stars would be all that I could manage if I ignored all the things listed above since the verbosity really killed it for me.
If you are looking for a simple, easy-to-read, humorous romance, like dogs and enjoy books written in a style similar to Janet Evanovich then this might be the book for you.
Piper Summers is nearly finished with her degree in veterinary science and to pay her way through school has worked many jobs. When she meets Aiden she is working as a singing telegram girl and is mortified by what happens. As a cute-meet it was pretty good. Their second meeting takes place at the dachshund rescue center Piper volunteers at and Aiden is pretty much smitten. Aiden puts the moves on Piper and then mysterious things begin to happen in Piper’s life that overlap into the rescue center and without answers to what is going on things get tense for a while. I liked the book but found it a bit predictable and at times felt that getting the humor in was a bit forced. I did not really warm to either of the characters…not sure why…but am willing to read another book in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s press for the copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest review.
What a fun read! From the very first page all the way to the last, this author had me chuckling and turning page after page to see what Piper would be up to next. I have to admit the title is what made me pick this up (I just had to know!) but the writing, characters (especially Sophie & Colin) and the fun bit of mystery kept me glued to the book. I really enjoyed how the relationship between Piper and Aidan grew and changed as the story went on. This is definitely a book I will be recommending to everyone.
I find it hilarious to see that this book was previously published under the title “Must Love Wieners”. I am sure there is a story behind that. As a dog lover, I found the chapter titles and dog puns to be my favorite part of the book. My favorite chapter name is “Never Mix Business with Wieners”. As I was reading the book, I kept looking forward to seeing the name of the next chapter. I was not disappointed.
Having worked in a veterinary hospital during college and juggling way too many things at once, I could really relate to the main character, Piper. Throughout the book, Piper is rushing from here to there- per“pet”ually late and “Daschund” the whole way. “Be-leash me” I get it! “I shih tzu not!”
I really have a “bone to pick” with the leading man in this story. I know Aiden has had a “ruff” life, “Pit happens”; but can he not see that by trying to keep work at the “paw-fice” and not mixing business with pleasure, he is creating more “inter-ruff-tion” to Piper’s life? Aiden has many “op-paw-tunities” to tell Piper the truth. I seriously wanted one of the dogs to bite him in the butt!
“Ultimuttly”, everything comes to a predicable end.
Enough with the dog puns, though. I did enjoy the book and will likely read the others in the series.
A light-hearted romance in between several mysteries! Piper Summers, the taxi driver, pizza deliverer, and singing telegram lady, is trying to finish her veterinarian’s certificate. Most of the story centers on the San Francisco Dachshunds Rescue Center where she volunteers.
A Unique and Funny RomCom Loved the dog rescue storyline. I’m glad the author gave dialogue to the barking and eye looks from the Dachshunds, Colin and Sophie. The main characters, Piper and Aiden showed good chemistry and a playfulness with each other. The story read smoothly and is one I’m recommending for your reading enjoyment. PEACE.
Entertaining and amusing with a mystery that throws a kink in the works between the two main characters. Great fluffy read to clear my palate. Have a greater appreciation for wiener dogs now.
This was a free book on Amazon and I was pleasantly surprised. Some parts were kind of awkward, but I can overlook that. I love the relationship between Piper and Aiden. It was a quick, easy, and fun read and I will likely read more books by this author in the future.

Review:
Must Love Wieners is the first book in Casey Griffin's Rescue Dog Romance series. An auspicious beginning I must say. I was torn as to what I enjoyed more – the mystery or the romance? Oh, who am I kidding, in this instance, the romantic aspect of the story J
Piper is a fiercely independent woman. She is working three jobs (driving taxi, pizza delivery person and delivers and performs singing telegrams) and finishing up her education to be a veterinarian. She is also an animal lover, who will protect them as needed and volunteers for the Dachshund Rescue Center.
After the delivery of a singing telegram to Aiden Caldwell, things go horribly wrong for Piper. Aiden Caldwell had followed Piper out of his office and while talking, he places his briefcase in the cab and then while occupied talking to each other…..the cab gets stolen. Her employer fires her as a result of this fiasco and then she gets fired from her pizza delivery job. Needless to say….this day was not going well for Piper, with only one job remaining and rent due! Surprisingly, Piper holds it together. This is the strong, resilient Piper I came to know and appreciate as I continued on with the story. Mind you, her “I can do it myself” attitude does at times wear a bit thin. We all need help sometimes and it is not a shame to ask for help, but Piper is dead set against that! That too shall be revealed as the story continues.
Aiden Caldwell is a perplexing character. He is all business and then, as he gets to know Piper, we see an emotional side of him. Piper’s musings on Aiden:
“Aiden Caldwell had to be the most confusing, stupefying man that Pipe had ever met. There was something between them. She was sure of it. it felt almost tangible. But then like a guillotine dropping, he would cut the emotion off like an unwanted head. And not just in from of Tamara, but in front of the cops after the taxi incident and when he left the center with Sophie.”
As the relationship between Piper and Aiden progress, so does the relationship between their dogs – Colin and Sophie.
To make life even more challenging, while the manager of the Dachshund Rescue Center is on vacation, Piper is looking after the center; and things do not go smoothly (no surprise there). Seems someone wants the center to close as numerous threats are received. Threats are also received at Piper’s home and after a break in at her apartment, she is evicted. Can we so…wow! Enough already, how much is one gal supposed to endure.
Through it all, we see the grit that Piper is made of. The relationship heats up and then cools down between Piper and Aiden….and then heats up again. It is a roller coaster ride which at times left me a tad confused and really wanting to get off the ride. Then the story would continue and I would be right in the thick of it and not wanting to put the book down (either entrenched in the mystery or cracking up as a result of something Piper said). Especially with some of the one-liners that Piper would come up with: “I will take great care of your wiener” – a comment as a result of getting hired as a dog walker for Aiden’s dog.
The cast of supporting characters throughout the book definitely kept the momentum going and added spice…and opportunities for much laughter.
All in all Must Love Wieners was an enjoyable romance and mystery. And who doesn’t love a story about cute Dachshund’s?

Must Love Wieners is the first in a new series , called Rescue Dog Romance by Casey Griffin. I am a huge dachshund lover, so I couldn't possibly turn down this book. (I have three dachshunds at home- a Black and Tan named Harry, A red long haired name Ron and our newest addition to the clan, a little puppy (who just turned one a few days ago!) named Albus Severus. So that should tell you that I love Harry Potter and I love Wiener dogs!) I was initially thinking it would be something along the lines of Must Love Dogs, but with Dachshunds. I was kind of right, but also kind of wrong. I didn't anticipate the mystery element surrounding Must Love Wieners.
The mystery in this book was a little slow going, but once it got started man oh man did it pick up in intensity fast! I really enjoyed the msytery/stalker/arsonist that all come to play in this story. It was much more high stakes than I originally anticipated. The romance was good as well, and I really liked both of the characters. Aiden initially seems pretty perfect, but Piper took a little bit to grow on me. I really liked her, and I completely felt awful for her because she does seem to have the worst luck in the world. Her life seems like a series of unfortunate events all tied together very closely. But she is just so stubborn!! I just wanted her to get over herself a little bit and accept help from people that so clearly cared about her. But her love for dogs more than made up for her stubborn streak. And at least she chose the right dog breed- she is certainly like a dachshund. They are stubborn to a fault too. I loved seeing Piper's little made up conversations with the dogs. It was hilarious because I have found myself imagining a look from one of my pups means the same thing as some of Colin's looks. They are too funny.
Overall, this book took me by surprise. I thought that I would enjoy it, but I didn't know in quite what way I would enjoy it. I wasn't sure if it would be campy or not. Turns out, it's not. The mystery is surprisingly great and the romance is sweet. I can't wait to see what the dachshund rescue center has in store for us next. Each of the books in the series will feature a different couple, but I am kind of hoping that we get to see a little more of Piper and Aiden because I feel like their story just kind of stopped. We solved the mystery and then bam- we were at the end f the book. I want a little more from them. But overall, this book was better than I expected! And if you are a dachshund lover, you will love Colin!
