But Thrawn’s origins and the story of his rise in the Imperial ranks have remained mysterious. Such was the promise Grand Admiral Thrawn made to Emperor Palpatine at their first meeting. Since then, Thrawn has been one of the Empire’s most effective instruments, pursuing its enemies to the very edges of the known galaxy. But as keen a weapon as Thrawn has become, the Emperor dreams of something far more destructive. Now, as Thrawn’s TIE defender program is halted in favor of Director Krennic’s secret Death Star project, he realizes that the balance of power in the Empire is measured by more than just military acumen or tactical efficiency. Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root―its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor’s favor, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs.

First, I need to sing the praises of the narrator, Marc Thompson. The audiobooks were a full blast auditory experience with background music and sound effects, and the one-man-cast. Dude had a distinguishably different voice for every single character. There were times I questioned if it was even really him (it was! Always!). So incredibly talented and I'm grateful he gets to share his truly remarkable gift with the world in such a fun way!

Now, going into this series, I had heard of Thrawn thanks to one sentence uttered in one episode of Mandalorian season 2. Beyond that 1 sentence, I knew nothing.

I love him.

In one fell swoop he became my #2 favorite Star Wars character of all time - behind only "Kevin" (or as you may know him, Baby Yoda/Grogu). He's SO COOL! I love how calm and collected and calculating he always is, that he's always 5 steps ahead of everyone else, and that he's a force to be reckoned with.

Book 1: Thrawn
Book 2: Alliances
Book 3: Treason

I loved Book 1. I was obsessed with it and couldn't put it down (or rather "turn it off"). I made every excuse to listen all day every day.

The 2nd one...I could do without.
It wasn't really about Thrawn. The story is that Thrawn and Darth Vader are assigned a mission together which forces flashbacks to a time when they had worked together before when Darth was still just Anakin and they worked together to rescue Padme.
So the A plot was actually the Anakin/Padme story, and I... I just? I just could NOT have cared ANY less AT ALL. Sorry not sorry.
I allowed myself to zone out as I listened and it was more of a chore to be sure I finished on time. Despite the fact it was 4 hours shorter, it took me 3 days longer to finish.

The third one went back to the style of the first and made me fall in love all over again! So good! I'm so glad I didn't give up when 2 wasn't my favorite!

There are more Thrawn trilogies by the same author, written both before and after this one. And the audiobooks are still narrated by my hero, Marc Thompson. I'm going to give those a try next and I hope to love them like I loved the first and third ones in this series!

I absolutely recommend the first and third books to anyone who has ever enjoyed Star Wars in ANY capacity. You do not need to be a die hard fan or some kind of ultra nerd to appreciate it.
Also, if you're into any kind of tactical army type stuff, I think you'd appreciate it.
But you 100% have my permission to skip Book 2 entirely. You don't need it in order to appreciate the 3rd and it's just... not fun. Don't read it. (But still read 1 & 3 because they're great!)
You're welcome 💙❤️

I read these not having previously known about the Heir to the Empire arc and only having just watched Rebels. Thrawn is a captivating grey-ish villain and the authors mark on Star Wars is phenomenal. The hidden plot behind the throne of the Empire to use the greatest force in the galaxy for the benefit of an unknown alien race.
