With an increasingly erratic mod on their trail, Gunn and Salvo must figure out a way to keep themselves alive long enough to piece together just what Grey is after.
But that's easier said than done as they manage to leave a trail of destruction in their wake. As usual, things are going from bad to worse.
And that's just the way they like it.
Bygone Star is the latest episode in the Gunn and Salvo sci-fi thriller series, a high-octane rush through the wildest corners of the galaxy!
Gunn, Salvo, Hypatia and Regency (Ren) Walker are on the Dead Planet, planning to find out as much as they can about the Dolus, especially about any weakness that could be exploited, to help fight them in a future encounter. They accepted an offer help from Okoli Adichie, Salvo’s former close friend, a fantastic engineer and inventor, whose planet, Calypso, had been destroyed in an earlier skirmish with Dolus forces. He knew that Gunn and Salvo would need a lot of help in their mission to Cerce to locate a writer who might be able to give them some hints as to how to defeat the Dolus. Along the way, they were detected and followed by Chime, a powerful Mod under a command protocol from Daedalus Grey to capture Ren, the only being who had been able to stand up to Grey thus far. Chime would then be free to carry out his own motivated protocol to kill Grey. When he catches up with the group, all hell breaks loose as he destroys anything and anyone in his path. How can anyone survive his attack?
Once again, I was instantly engrossed, turning pages into the wee hours to see what happened next. I thoroughly enjoy Mr. James’ style: lots of action, prodigious battles against overwhelming odds and characters that still have humorous interplay. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion – I bought a copy of it and have pre-ordered the next book in this series to support this outstanding author.
The situations are all over the place, the plot is sometimes confusing and the characters are so mixed that it's mind boggling. Humans/AI/teen, and all types of animal shaped Universe inhabitants. 3 Stars is the maximum I can give. When I read a book the worst for me is having to pause my reading and going back to try to remember what this or that character's role is in this book, then going forward to where I was to continue reading only to find myself in the same situation further along in my reading and having to repeat the move again. However, imagination and creativity such as this could appeal to another crop of readers, but not this reader.
In some ways this is a clever well thought out series, in another, it's full of so many inconsistencies that it's infuriating My biggest gripe, is that the bad guys are so lethal, so far advanced that Gunn, Salvo and the rest of humanity should have all died by the end of book 2. Somehow the good guys keep surviving, basically through the ineptness of the bad guys and after 4 books it's tiresome I'll take a look a pause to the series here, read something different and maybe come back to it, at a later date, hoping that things start to make more logical sense
Now hunted by the authorities themselves, Gunn, Salvo and Regency are chasing down Chime, a mod. They have to use all the skill and stealth that they can muster to outrun the authorities.
They are still trying to find Brassius so that they can find out all she knows about the Dolus in the hope of finding a way to kill Grey.
These characters are so well written that you feel that you know them personally. I really don’t want anything bad to happen to them.
The usual fast paced and exciting adventure that this author excels at. The fourth book in the series introduces a few new characters, and as to be expected when dealing with a seemingly unbeatable alien, more that a few grisly deaths. I look forward to seeing where the saga heads next, hopefully soon..... I read this chapter in one sitting! I received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
BYGONE STAR Another action packed installment in the Gunn and Salvo fight against the monster, Grey. It’s exciting, well written, and has wonderful characters, but I miss the humor of the first book. I’m ready for this story to wrap up now and move on to a fresh, new Gunn and Salvo adventure!
