A Dream Scout must follow the paths set before him.

For the druids of Sorlen Grove, rules are a way of life. They live in service to the Rianaves: ancient, sentient trees who provide everything they need.

But for Elliot Eldinae, a teen-aged Dream Scout who can transform into a fox at will, life in the secret Grove is not as idyllic as it seems. When the paths set before him in Dreaming lead to Cerion, the land of men, his journeys outside of his hidden Grove unravel the threads of everything he ever thought he knew.

Venturing through Dreaming reveals a beautiful human girl with a magical voice, a scourge of wicked Sorcerers, and a plot to assassinate a prince and steal the throne from beneath an ailing, elderly king.

As the truths of the greater world are revealed to him, Elliot is faced with a choice: find true love and save a prince, or remain at false peace in a controlling Grove where memories are plucked and lies are planted like seeds to keep everyone compliant.

Filled with magic, wonder, beauty, and twists, and alive with multiple award-winning author Missy Sheldrake’s love for the magic of nature, it is the Grove’s will that you should read this unforgettable fantasy adventure.

“You and I are linked […]. Linked by heart and deed and memory. Once this task is finished and you have followed the path set before you, I’ll be the other end of the tether for you. Your anchor in the Grove […].”

Dream Scout is the second book from His Majesty’s Elite series, but it can be read as a standalone.
It tells us about the journey of Elliot Eldinae, a young wood Elf that lives in Sorlen Grove, a very closed and secretive community. Elliot has the gift to scout in dreams and the ability to change into fox form, whether in the Dreaming, in the In Between and in the Waking. He always felt like he didn’t really belong in the community and lacked freedom of choice (anyone who decided to leave the Grove was Forgotten). When Elliot watches certain paths unfolding in his scouting, taking him towards Cerion, the neighboring human kingdom, and a dark magical force starts threatening the Grove and its magical source, a series of choices have to be taken, revealing so many things that seemed impossible.

I’m trying to be very careful about my review, because I don’t want to spoil anything (I even suppressed a name in my opening quote to prevent it). Missy Sheldrake has created an amazing book world, incredibly detailed, filled with magic and meaningful characters. In the first half of the book, I loved the strong presence of nature and the way that everything is connected in the Grove. I also loved to know about Elliot’s background, his family and the ways of the community in which he grew up. The second half of the book ties beautifully with Songspinner, book 1 in this series. There were many pieces that I felt I needed to know more about previously and they got perfectly developed in Dream Scout. If you are a multiple book reader, I’d suggest reading book 1 and book 2 in tandem, even if each one can be read as a standalone. There’s a growth in Missy’s storytelling that you shouldn’t miss.
If you like Elves, Mages, Powerful Antagonists, Royalty, Loyal Friends, a hint of Romance and a lot of Magic, then you have to read this series!

This was such a beautiful story! The world building was so whimsical and enchanting! The setting, the characters, the magic and the creatures that took place were just.. Dreamy 😉

I also need to say that this book is so beautiful on the inside as it includes stunning pieces of character art that are created by the author as well! If you love to read fantasy books with druids, elves, sorcerers and characters who travel through dreams, this is a book that you need to pick up 🥰

Dream Scout is part of the his majestys elite series along with the companion book Song Spinner, both of which can be read on its own without spoilers, but also helps bridge the gap with some questions you may have had in book one. His Majesty’s Elite is a prequel series to the Keepers of the Wellsprings series, and can be read before, during, or after the main series.

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝑵𝒐 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒔

I was so excited to dive into this book and learn more about Elliot, I always wondered what life as a Dream Scout, who could turn into a fox, was like (having met him in #KeepersoftheWellsprings) and I was glad to find I wasn’t disappointed. We got a great mix of magic, sorcery, royalty, and romance while reading and I especially loved the connection to nature throughout. I loved Elliot’s growth throughout the book; the insight into his relationship with his family, the Grove, how he marvels at the outside world, and how all of this impacts his choices and actions as we see him realise things aren’t quite always as they seem. And now Elliot must make sense of what he thought he knew and decide his own path…….
Missy has a magical way with words that as the reader I can’t help but be enchanted. These books have some of the best world-building I have ever read. Missy weaves together multiple layers, between The Grove and The Known Lands and its predecessor, giving us a unique tale of a Wood Elf trying to find his place in the world.
I can’t not mention the audio. Penny’s voice for Elliot is perfection! After listening to the first few chapters, I can’t wait to fully re-read the book via audio.

No matter what book you start with in Missy’s world I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.

Elliot is a wood elf who lives in the Grove, which provides everything he could need. He can also shift into a fox🦊, and when he’s dreaming, Elliot wanders at will. He is a dream scout, and the Grove leads him to Cerion, the world of men. As he’s led to learn more of this other world, he must make difficult choices to follow the will of the Ancients guiding him, protect the girl he loves, and stop an assassination attempt on the royal family🗡.

When I read fantasy, I love the world-building, and the world of Dream Scout is lush but hints at the sacrifices made for the good of the Grove. Elliot has a lot to learn throughout the book and becomes more sure of himself with every choice he makes. There is a lot of action in this book - Elliot weaves through the real world, to dreaming and the in-between, from his wood elf form to his fox form. 🍃🍁🌾

🌿I loved being in this fantasy world while reading Dream Scout, and can’t wait to read more of the books set in this world. I received a copy of the audio book from Missy Sheldrake for free for taking part in a read-along. 🍂

Missy Sheldrake has truly created a masterpiece in her prequal novel to her magical series ‘Keepers of the Wellspring.”

In this edition the reader is invited in to see from the perspective of Elliot, a young wood elf with the gift of shifting into a fox at will. Through Elliot’s story the reader is able to join in his journey to find purpose, love and friendship in paths he never believed would be open to him. His personal journey is made even more challenging as his scouting gifts allow him the rare ability to journey outside the borders of the grove, and once he does he finds himself increasingly drawn to a human girl and away from the peaceful discipline of the grove he adores.

I fell in love with the world Missy has created even more than I have ever before, and a lot of that comes down to her portrayal of Elliot. His growth through the novel was perfectly written and I found myself feeling all the emotions he does as he learns the reality of the world he lives in.

I would completely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy or who is looking to explore the genre. What makes Missy’s work even more extrodinary is her ability to write a story for all ages, while this is a young adult novel I felt the supense and the plot were fitting for an older audience of all ages. There’s love, power, action and anticipation, perfectly balanced in the most thought provoking ways.

Lastly scattered throughout the novel is the most amazing artwork created by Missy herself, which pulls the reader further into her world and the characters she has created. If it isn’t on your to be read list yet I urge you to add it immediately, you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

Even better, today is Missy’s release day for this incredible work of art! So please check this out if you haven’t already!! Congratulations Missy, this novel is honestly incredible, I hope you’re sitting back and relaxing while we all obsess over your extraordinary talent 💛

I actually feel bad about not liking this book. I really enjoyed the Kythshire series and respect Missy as an author. That being said I did feel like this missed the mark for me. I won't go into all the details but I would like to note a few things so that other readers who maybe dislike similar things can be given notice.

This book follows the trend of "same story different pov" which is NOT enjoyable for me. I am sure there are people who love this hence it being a thing, but I'm not one of those people. All the excitement and mystery is missing.

This being a prequel is hard enough. I know who the good guys will be because I've seen their future. I know who is going to end up with who. There's no wondering who is going to be together. But having just read this same slice of history through Mya's eyes was too much taken away.

The first half of the book is mostly original story with only a few shared dreams with Mya that are the same. I did get to the halfway point and think the book was over as there is a complete story arc contained there. We've had our building up to it with the main conflict. The climax and the resolution. Only to feel like... the race is only halfway over.

From that point on it was a lot of I've seen it already. We know who the bad guy is, who will win and how. We know Mya is going to get rescued and that she'll get her voice back and how. All the build up to the mysterious sorcerer falls flat when we've read the story already from Mya's pov and know who he is.

Also Elliot reads like a 10-12 year old boy. And it was only the scenes where he's making out with Mya that it becomes obvious he's not. I thought it in Mya's book, but again here, the fact that Mya and Elliot's relationship seems primarily built on physical is not romantic to me. They spend more time kissing each other or talking to other people when they're together. There's very little meaningful conversation between the two of them.

So for me the main reasons I didn't enjoy this was that I'd seen most of the story before and there was no thrill of discovery. The relationship between the two was lackluster and purely physical. (and after seeing the romance from the original series I KNOW Missy can write an amazing romance), and Elliot sounded much younger than the 16+? year old boy he was.

There were other things I could pick out but I feel like these three things might be stuff readers would want a heads up for.

A tale of magic, adventure, and most importantly finding one’s self. Dream Scout is a must read coming of age story.

Every part of the plot was fast-paced and well written, making the book a very enjoyable read. I usually easily foresee plot twists, but DANG. All the plot twists in this story caught me by complete surprise. The world building is beautiful and magical, and never monotonous. It describes the world in such a way that you can imagine it, but is detailed just enough that your mind can see it in its own way. Every time I opened up the (e)book I was completely immersed and felt like I was right there with Elliot. Go do yourself a pleasure and read Dream Scout as soon as possible.

Sheldrake’s Dream Scout will be going on my shelf next to my Tolkien, Lewis, LeGuin, and MacDonald collections. The characters are as endearing, the worlds as vast and immersive, and the plots as deep and symbolic as all of the great classic fantasy writers.

Though Dream Scout is a standalone, it is ultimately a companion novel to Songspinner (previously published as Mya), and is part of His Majesty’s Elite, a coming-of-age, prequel series that follows the adult group of knights in Sheldrake’s Keepers of the Wellsprings series. I thoroughly enjoyed Call of Kythshire, the first in the Wellsprings series, and was excited to get to know the younger versions of the courageous warriors defending Cerion and Kythshire.

At the forefront of this YA fantasy lies masterful and intricate world building. Sheldrake’s Grove is vast and eerie, completely separated from the world of men in Cerion, and provides an interesting (and disturbingly truthful) look into the dark side of idyllic utopian worlds. Elliot Eldinae, our titular Dream Scout, starts peering deeper into his dream walks and discovers that there is more to the whole world than just the Grove, and the Grove is not as harmonious as it seems. Those who leave the Grove can never return, and information about its existence is a closely guarded secret of its powerful leaders.

Through his dream walking ability, Elliot meets Mya, a beautiful girl with the voice of an angel. She completely captures his heart, and through his exposure to her and her world, Elliot ends up participating in an instrumental effort to eradicate a great evil from Cerion, the Grove, and the rest of The Known Lands.

The icing on the cake for me, really, is the incredible cast of characters in Sheldrake’s books. It was impossible not to get attached to any of them and develop strong opinions and loyalties to them. My favorite in Dream Scout is actually a side character, Elowyn, who I won’t go into too much detail about to avoid spoilers, but I couldn’t help but make connections to other stories with the character and just automatically be a fan. A very loyal, obsessed fan. A disruptive fan, actually.

Overall, Dream Scout is pretty special to me; I got to participate in 2 (TWO!) read alongs with the author, who is lovely and graciously put up with my enthusiastic antics because I just became so fond of the story and the characters that I could not contain myself. I give my heartfelt thanks to Missy Sheldrake for the ARC and the opportunity to be on the #CerionStreetTeam for this wonderful novel.

I highly recommend to add it to your TBR, and skip it ahead in the line. It’s perfect for epic fantasy fans, has a touch of romance, and it has world building that reminds me of why I started reading fantasy in the first place.

There are some places in our world so hidden, most don’t even believe they exist. Places no one can happen into because they are so well protected.

Get swept away into the world of dreaming where all is not what it seems….or maybe everything is exactly what it appears to be. Elliot Eldinae is a Dream Scout who has the ability to see things in his dreams that are linked to reality. Although his true form is a wood elf, he has the ability to transform himself into a fox. How incredibly cool is that? I adored his courage and desire to be a beacon of light in the dark when fate weighed heavily on his shoulders.

I feel the power of the Grove flowing off her like water over the falls, spilling into me, filling me with comfort. I feel myself relax and I lean into her welcoming hold.
“Long have you suffered from all of this,” she soothes.

I have read many beautifully written books about magical worlds. But Dream Scout was by far one of the most visually satisfying books I’ve ever read. Missy’s vivid descriptions of the Grove and Elliot’s world had my imagination running wild. If you’ve always dreamed of having a treehouse…you totally need to experience Elliot’s treehouse. The enchanted Grandymum! Now I want a Grandymum!

This is a dream, I remind myself. Only a dream. But I know after this, I’ll never be the same. Somehow, this dream has sealed a destiny that’s just beginning to reveal itself to me.

I could go on forever about this beautiful book and the characters that live there. But I’ll finish with one more quote and by saying I enjoyed every page of Dream Scout and will definitely be adding it to my “favorites” shelf.

”You put too much weight on what others think,” she offers quietly after a long silence. “It doesn’t matter what they think. You can’t let their ideas about you change who you are. You’re on your own path. A path no one else can fathom. A noble path.”

“A Druid must follow the path set before him”

Dream Scout is the 2nd book from His Majesty’s Elite series, but it can also be read as a standalone.
It follows the journey of Elliot Eldinae, a wood elf from Sorlen Grove, they live in service to the Rianaves: Ancient, sentient trees who provide everything they need.

Elliot has the gift of dream scouting and being able to shift into fox form, whether in the dreaming, the in-between or waking world. When venturing through dreaming new paths are laid out before him, one that could take him away from the safety of the grove and into the neighbouring human lands of Cerion, where a dark force threatens the Grove and the city.

This was another perfect read from the world Missy has created. Full of magic and great character development, the world building was exceptional. The illustrations in the book are stunning and really help the story come to life. It was full of twists from the beginning, there was so much action as you follow Elliot’s adventures through Cerion, as well as so many touching moments that really make you connect with the characters; I couldn’t stop reading.

Having read Songspinner first it was so interesting to read certain parts from Elliot’s viewpoint and it really made the story come together for me and tied in beautifully. Although it would still make perfect sense reading as a standalone. You learn much more about the Grove and Elliot’s beginnings in this book and it was so captivating, I loved the whole vibe of nature and everything in the Grove being connected. However, without giving away any spoilers the Grove is not entirely what it seems.

If you love Mages, Sorcerers, Elves, Royalty, Friendship and lots of magic, then I guarantee you will love this book and series.

I am thankful that the author sent me a copy of this lovely novel, it is absolutely gorgeous!
The illustrations of characters and sceneries, as well as the lovely writing style really made this experience magical for me.

Dream Scout is a fantasy novel about a druid named Elliot who is a dream scout. A dream scout is an elf with the ability to travel, both spiritually and physically, through dreams in two forms: their own and an animal. All that is important is to follow the path and not stray, maintaining secrecy to protect one self and the Grove.
Elliot, on one of his scouting trips meets a beautiful human girl and an evil sorcerer plotting assassination against the human allies.
Elliot is left with the decision to either find his love and stop the assassins, or remain in the safety of the Grove and ancestors.

This book is utterly enchanting and i adored the first half where the readers are introduced to the life within the Grove, learning of the habits of wooden elves, as well as getting a glimps of higher elves. The magic system is also very interesting, as well as the opposite view of a mag and sorcerer.

Elves...magic.... spells....it's my cup of tea!

The only thing i personally wasn't thrilled about was the romance. It wasn't bad by any means, i'm just not a big fan of "love at first sight" or rather "instant love through bound destiny" type of tropes. I'm more for build-ups and slow burn relationships.

Overall i would highly recommend this book to all fantasy and romance readers! 😊

OMG! I had sooo much fun with this book!

.
I really have no words for this book! So this is just going to be a small mini review.
(For a more detailed review: GO CHECK MY BLOG! I will be posting it next week!)
.
First of all, I just have to say that I am really not the best person who can take a beautiful photo.
.
Second! OMG! Missy’s World Building is surely OUT IF THIS WORLD! I wonder what it is like in here mind! The genre is simple FANTASY, but I did get a few other vibes from the book too! And the the fox I drew over here is a VERY VERY main part of the story.
.
So basically it is about a young boy who is a dream scout. As a dream scout he can shape-shift to a fox 🦊. And then he goes to ALL KINDS OF ADVENTURES!
.
.
So the the thing that made me gave it a four point twenty five is cause it felt a bit confusing. There were scenes that I DID NOT understood anything! But the problem was THIS WAS THE SECOND book in this series. So if you are planned to buy this book..make sure to read the first one first! But it’s okay! You can read them in any order, but you do get a bit confused.
.
.
But overall I just give it a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It was so good and when it ended (I do this after every book I finish) I STARED AT THE LAST PAGE AND THOUGHT..... WTF AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY LIFE!!!
.
.
THANK YOU so much if you reached till here... you should definitely give this book a go. And all other book Missy has written. I bet they are as good as this!
.
I really want to add more cause I really didn’t go that deep, and my experience from the awesome read along ARC chat I had with a few AWESOME people!
The arc chat was one of the best thing about this...it was a basic read along but was 10 times more FUN! Such a wonderful group of people!
.
Why should you pick up this book??
Because it has ADVENTURES, ROMANCE, CLASSIC FANTASY! I mean! Come on! I am so sure that you will like this book!
(Also on a side note: FOR AVOIDING CONFUSION A BIT.... READ THE FIRST BOOK!)
But go check out my book review blog in a week. I promise it won’t have ANY spoilers in them too!
.
Thank you for reading!

This is a stand alone book, although you can read it along with Songspinner. It's hard for me to write a review because I want to tell you everything that's wonderful about this book, but then it would be just one big spoiler! I love the writing style--I felt like I could see, smell, and touch everything Elliot experienced. The world building is incredible. I ate up all the twists and turns of Elliot's path. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new, complex characters that I really, really hope get their own books, or at least short stories, one day. The lovely sketches of the characters and settings helped me visualize the world of the Grove and Cerion even better--I wish more YA books had illustrations like these. If you enjoy magical forests, fantasy, or coming of age romances, you'll LOVE Dream Scout!

I received a copy of Dream Scout as part of Missy Sheldrake’s Street team and for review.

I have only read one of Missy's books and although Dream Scout can be read as a stand alone I felt this put me at a disadvantage with a lack of knowledge of the setting.

Elliot is a Dream Scout. He can shape shift to become a Fox and also travel between different states of consciousness.

Contained within the book are Missy's drawings of characters and scenes. She has an amazing talent and they help to bring the characters to life, a very welcome accompaniment.

Missy has a talent for descriptives that allows you to embrace the beauty of the natural world its set in. However the magic system and flitting between three states of consciousness left me feeling confused and disorientated meaning I couldn't fully grasp the plot.

As with all of Missy Sheldrake's books I was obsessed with it! I love Elliot's story. I love all the characters. I loved watching him find his place in the world when he thought he had no purpose. The love he has for his family and people who become family is amazing. I absolutely sobbed my eyes out at the end. Fantasy is my top two favorite genres. Missy Sheldrake always puts her heart and soul into her writing. The illustrations are amazing! This book is magical Five! Five out of five
