Clayton Trebek doesn’t know what to make of the woman he finds sleeping in her car on his property. After ensuring she doesn’t need help, he thinks he’s seen the last of her until he catches sight of her around Mountain Bend after she said she was headed home. It’s not until she wanders into his club and shows signs of a submissive streak along with a wariness of answering personal questions that he suspects she’s dodging trouble.
Skye Anderson remembers nothing prior to rousing with a throbbing, bleeding head, a dead man sprawled on the bed next to her, and a woman claiming to be her best friend telling her he was her husband. Her blank memories send her fleeing the house in fear and she spends the next few weeks hanging around Mountain Bend. When there is no news about a murdered man, she grows more confused and more drawn to the rancher intent on helping her.
Loneliness, worry, and fear draw her closer to Clayton, but the time comes when she has to return to the scene of the crime if she wants answers. Clayton isn’t about to let her go and enlists his friends’ help to find her, hoping he isn’t too late to save the woman he’s fallen hard for.
I live in the Midwest with my husband and two dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting her two dogs, reading and working puzzles. We have traveled extensively, but I much prefer being a homebody.
I began writing erotic novels with an emphasis on erotic spanking five years ago never dreaming that I would get published. I just celebrated the release of my eleventh title and am very thankful to my publisher, Pink Flamingo, for taking a chance on me and giving me the opportunity to enjoy a fun career. While my earlier books lean more towards straight erotica that will appeal to only a very select audience, my last five books are erotic romances. I enjoy hearing all comments from readers. What a great addition to this new series, Doms of Mountain Bend. There are several authors who I read everything they write, and Ms. BJ Wane is one of them. She has a way of bringing life to her characters, emotions, and interactions while writing a mystery, suspense with romance. Add in dominant men, smart but feisty females, a touch of danger, a healthy dose of eroticism within a relationship, add in the spice of BDSM scenes, and you get a perfect blend within a story.
The story begins in Boise, Idaho, a crime scene—one man dead, one woman bleeding and injured and suffering from amnesia—and another claiming she is her friend and will help her. Too many things don’t seem right, but she must get out of there rather than wait to see what happens. Hearing two people talking in another part of the house, she gathers a few clothing items, her purse and leaves out of the bedroom to escape this scene.
Harper: “Oh, my God, Skye! You didn’t. Please tell me you didn’t.” Skye: “Didn’t what? And who is Skye? Me?” Harper: “Skye, what happened? Don’t you recognize me? Harper, your best friend. How can you not know me? I thought you were leaving before Alex got home. Are you all right? Did he hurt you? Is that why you shot him?” Skye: “I don’t know what happened to him, or even who he is, or where I am.” Harper: “Trust me, Skye. I’ve always been there for you and won’t let you down now.”
The story’s plot will have Skye leaving Boise and driving to Mountain Bend; she is still uncertain, confused, and doesn’t know what happened, who those people were, or who she really is. There is nothing in the news about her being wanted or anything about the murder of a man named Alex Gregory. She has to find a place to stay and keep checking. So tired, weary, she will pull off the road to rest her eyes, and before she knows it, a man is tapping on her glass, but she assures him she is alright and leaves.
“Are you sure you’re okay? Is there someone you can call to make sure you arrive home safely?”
Clayton Trebek has seen too many women in bad situations, and he feels like the woman parked by the ranch is another victim. But he can’t help her if she doesn’t trust him. Then, he sees her again out of his office window—why did she lie to him about heading home? He knows the people of Mountain Bend.
The story has one woman trying to remember, and one man a defender of victims but harsh on criminals—what neither one expected was finding each other and the chemistry between them. When Skye shows up at Spurs thinking it is a country-western bar, she discovers quickly, it is a private BDSM club. Why do things seem familiar? When Clayton agrees to let her stay, show her around, and let her witness the various stations and couples engaging in play, Skye isn’t shocked, more intrigued, and something in the back of her mind is accepting. She has become friends with Lisa and Poppy, and after several outings with them, she is comfortable—but the fear remains, she doesn’t know who she is and did she kill Alex? Bits and flashbacks play, nightmares plague her, but the answers are still elusive. Clayton asks her several times if there is anything he can do to help, yet she rejects his offer—but agrees to stay in his building on the sofa sleeper.
The story will keep the pages turning as it unfolds, with new connections and experiences, a mystery with a touch of danger and suspense, and so many uncertainties and unanswered questions. It also has a slow-building relationship between Skye and Clayton. What starts as an attraction changes to a night together and then agreeing to scene together at Spurs—one without commitments. Skye can’t commit due to her amnesia, and Clayton doesn’t think he is ready to settle down like Shawn and Dakota—but fate is fickle. Trouble is coming, the danger isn’t over, and the mystery hasn’t been solved. Will Skye remember? Will Clayton hate her?
“She was an enigma, one he needed to solve for his peace of mind and before he could appease his lust, which continued to burn hotter each time he saw her.”
“He was a love them thoroughly, leave them happy kind of guy, staying friends with most women after the sexual relationship ended. No woman had tempted him to consider anything more than that, but none had drawn his curiosity the way Skey had since their first encounter or shied away from their attraction to him.”
Defender is the third book in one of my very favorite author BJ Wane’s Doms Of Mountain Bend series. In the prior books, we were introduced to the men that had been together since childhood and adopted after leaving an abusive foster family. This is Clayton’s book. Clayton is the prosecutor for the town of Mountain Bend, he also helps out on his brothers ranch, and he’s a Dom. Our heroine is Skye, she shows up in Mountain Bend with a case of amnesia. She has woken up at her home to a dead husband and a supposedly well-meaning best friend who “found” her with the body. But Skye isn’t entirely sure that she’s responsible. Until she can figure this all out, she ends up on the run in a town called Mountain Bend, where she repeatedly runs into hot and bossy cowboy, Clayton. While Clayton knows what a woman in trouble looks like, he also realizes he wants Skye. The scenes between the two of them are hot enough to burn the paper on any pages. BJ has done a fantastic job with building the story on this one, and waiting to find out just who and why is behind Skye’s troubles is only half the fun of this super sexy read! If you haven’t picked up one of BJ’s books, what are you waiting for?
Doms of Mountain Bend are hot, sexy, protective and Cowboys and will take what they want. The book tropes are BDSM, Erotica, Suspense, Western, Romance. It is not hard core BDSM B.J. Wane as focused these books with an emphasis on erotic spanking. The books are full of sassiness, humour, naughtiness, a lots of titillating passion, angst, a whole bunch of drama and palpable tension inducing danger. In this delectable tale Clayton Trebek, loves his job and his club Spurs. When he comes across a woman sleeping in her car, he can’t get her out of his mind wondering what her story is. He finds that she has left but may be walking in to her death. Can he get to her before he looses her? Skye Anderson wakes to a dead husband, no memory and a feeling of something after her. Fleeing she finds herself lonely and finds herself at a club she has never been to but the happenings within seem familiar. She finds she can no longer keep things to herself but returning to the scene of the crime may just kill her. If you like a little kinkiness and danger, then jump right in.
This is Clayton's story and it made me even more endeared to him. There is mystery, steam and suspense in this fantastic story. It is a very well written addition to the Doms of the Mountain Bend series.
Part of a series about men who own a BDSM club and the damsels in distress they rescue (this author's signature trope), defender prosecutor Clayton meets amnesiac Skye; will the trouble she's running from be too much even for him? Although characters from previous books appear and I haven't read those, I followed this well enough.
It's been a long time since I've read Ms. Wane, and what I like and dislike about her books are apparent here. I appreciate that her MCs are adults (and think, talk, and act like one); the women strong; the men possessive; the kink consensual. But the prose is too detailed, too repetitious, and too wordy. How many times does Skye need to drive back and forth to Boise? How often must we be told how Clayton's parents died and that he doesn't "do" relationships (using the exact same verbiage, no less)? How frequently does everyone need to mention Phoenix? I skimmed more than a third of this book without missing anything. Pro Tip: If you're not providing readers with new information, take it out. Ms Wane's editor has done her no favors.
3 stars. Skye's profession is a nice self-reflexive touch. The characters are likable; the mystery interesting; the prose uneconomical. It will pass the time, but not keep your focus. In looking at other reviews, I see I'm not the only one to say that this book drags; I wish authors understood that we readers really can retain information. 1st Note: We don't "divest into;" we "invest in" and "divest from." 2nd Note: The e-text is damaged, with random yellow highlights throughout.
I could not put this book down. Shrouded in mystery Skye doesn't know why she woke up to her husband dead in the bedroom or why she feels like something or someone is after her, but in order to find the truth she needs her memory back. Clayton is a confirmed bachelor but the mystery woman who keeps showing up has peak an interest in him that he can't shake. The intensity of this story is edge of your seat, nail bitting fantastic, the intense attraction between Clayton and Skye electric. I hate to see the end of the protectors, but can't wait to see what comes next.

This is the 3rd novel of the series and is just as hot as the other two! Clayton is the lawyer in the group of three and together they own a ranch and a lifestyle club. Clayton will play, but avoids any and all commitment. Skye is on the run, but she's not quite sure why. All she knows is she woke up to a dead man in her bedroom. She can't exactly remember what happened but fragments of memories keep breaking through. She decides to stop in Mountain Bend, Idaho and figure out what is going on and what she should do next. But for some reason, she keeps running into one very sexy and very dominant cowboy, Clayton. He makes her feel things she hasn't felt before. The longer Skye stays and makes friends, the more reluctant she is to leave...especially after Clayton gives Skye a tour of the lifestyle club. But with gaps in her memory, she's hesitant to stay but doesn't want to go. Perhaps one sexy, dominant cowboy lawyer can convince her to stay as well as find out what she's hiding or hiding from. Loved Clayton & Skye..he's so dominant but loving and she loves how he makes her feel, but she can't remember why. So, so good!

At the time I read this book, I was brand new to BJ Wane and had never read even one of her books. And, as you can see, I did it again by starting towards the end of a series instead of the beginning. I'll stop, I promise, one of these days.
I rarely enjoy a book like I enjoyed this one. I read an ARC of this book, from the author, and I'm just happier than a stallion in a barnful of mares that I raised my hand to take that ARC. And please keep in mind that I'm oh so very late in writing this review on Goodreads.
In response to at least one reviewer who saw a lot of typos and strange formatting. I saw one instance of blue (the color blue) writing, but I know that, more than likely, Amazon/Kindle can be blamed for that one, since it didn't appear to be something that was in the manuscript itself. And I found one typo, which is 6 less than I found in the latest Sandra Brown. :-) I am an unforgiving Grammar Nazi, and I really didn't see anything that would detract from the book at all. Besides all of that, this was an ARC people. I don't know one ARC that has gone through a final edit before the ARC readers get it. Shame on you for thinking BJ Wane is any different than any other author.
This book was one more book in the series about a Dominant who actually knows what that means. I've been peripherally involved in the BDSM lifestyle for years and I know it takes all types of Doms, but most of them who have been written about in the pages of so called BDSM books, are really written from a teenager's point of view, instead of by someone who has actually witnessed the action, so to speak. I enjoyed every spank, as well as all the rest of the steam.
I am, right at this minute, trying to decide what other BJ Wane book I want to read next. Kudos to the author for a book well written and a theme well researched. I'll be back (for more BJ Wane books).
The third (and final?) in the Doms Of Mountain Bend Series, featuring District Attorney Clayton Trebek and author Skye Anderson. This story is full of suspense and steam and features plenty of all the other main characters from the previous two books. A good finish to the series.

I am a fan of B.J. Wane's books and although there were elements of suspense and mystery in Defender, it moved too slowly in the beginning. Covered in blood, Skye wakes up to find her husband dead and no memory of the event. On the run and trying to remember, she is found sleeping in her car by Clayton. The story line held my interest, but the time period it took Skye to piece her memories back together seemed awkward. She runs, but only a few towns over from her home and is cashing checks as she goes. Clayton works as a Prosecutor and knows something is wrong, but casually offers her a place to sleep with access to his office. Things just weren't believable for the story to progress smoothly.
This was a great addition to the series, thoroughly enjoyed captivating read
I loved this next book in the Dom’s of Mountain Bend series and as always with any of the books that I have read from B J Wane I always love the plot and the care that is put into each of the characters, it is always a thoroughly enjoyable and once I start am unable to put book down until I reach the last page.
This started very dramatically with Skye waking up in bed next to a dead man who she has no memory of, she is suffering from a head injury but other that that has no idea how? Why? when or where any of this happened?
Then after she is found by Harper who is her friend she goes on the run and finds herself sleeping in her car on the side of a ranch owned by a very unimpressed Clayton Trebek. She is tired and confused and extremely scared and it is obvious even to him that she is not in the best shape and as a Dom he used to helping females and caring for them.
As he instantly recognises that she is in trouble and that she is not being up front about why she is scared and in hiding, he is determined that he will do what he can to help whilst she is in his care, so to speak. There are so many things going on that Skye cannot understand such as why is there no record of the dead man in the bed, why has he not been reported missing and why does she have a nagging feeling her life may well be in danger.
I do not want to give away the story and spoil the plot for other readers but I will say that once you begin reading this book you will not be able to put this sown until you reach the end. I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
Defender is the third book in BJ Wane’s Doms of Mountain Bend and just when you thought these stories couldn’t get any better, along comes Clayton Trebek. Every story in this series has revolved around the exceptional men who have shared the camaraderie of shared tragedy and heartbreak but have risen above it all to become men of honour and determination. As Clayton has watched his brothers of choice fall victim to cupid’s bow, he knows that destiny will never be his…..or will it?
Not knowing who you are or what you are fleeing is a terrifying and confronting reality, and Skye Anderson is reluctant to let the devastatingly attractive and alluring man who crosses her path close enough to delve into the reasons she is homeless and afraid. But Clayton didn’t get where he is by letting hurdles block his path and one evasive and captivating woman won’t beat his resolve either.
Defender is a fast-paced, gripping romantic suspense that keeps the reader thoroughly engaged and riveted to the pages till the last one is turned. A well-written and intriguing storyline where tragedy and heartache are eventually overshadowed by the deceit and betrayal caused by greed. Clayton and Skye are fabulous characters who each bring something powerful and unique to this story. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in this series and thank the author for the her talent and imagination in writing such engaging stories.

As usual, BJ Wane delivered a delightful read with elements of the D/s genre. The story line was uniquely different from others I've read. A young woman on the run struggling to remember a past shrouded in hazy headaches and confusing dreams meets Dom who values honesty and works hard to put away those who would hurt the innocent. Unfortunately, the story quickly became choppy and difficult to follow as I was constantly distracted by the numerous editing errors. Nearly every page contained blue writing, for example on location page 673...[kr13][BP14]. These sorts of breaks showed up sometimes twice on one page, see location page 1826 in chapter 7. Several pages had words highlighted in yellow. There were grammar errors, ex " What business if it of yours?" Found in chapter 4 , location 1051....... These sorts of errors tend to be irritating and distracting. Hopefully this review will encourage better editing before publication. Regardless, I still will always enjoy reading anything by this author. She's knowledgeable and fun in her writing, her stories tend to be short and sweet. And I enjoy them when I need something light and easy to read. Thank you, BJ Wane for another delightful read.
Enigmatic Clayton, the crusader for victims’ justice, has intrigued me from the beginning of the series. I have to admit, Skye wasn’t who I pictured for his forever, but having seen the pair of them together, I completely get it. Like his ‘brothers’, Clayton has a strong protective instinct. Even though Skye is fiercely independent, she’s at a vulnerable place in her life and that triggers everything alpha in Clayton. But she’s still got that solid steel spine and makes him work for her attention and trust. I enjoyed the suspense elements in this book. It was another mystery that didn’t play out in a way I’d seen before. I also quite liked the way the club and Lifestyle aspects were handled. Especially the way the author played with the concepts of “safe, sane, and consensual” while also stressing their importance. We may now know the fates of all three “Cooper brothers”, but I’m not at all finished with the Doms of Mountain Bend. There’s more I want to get to know. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.
Clayton is rather baffled by the woman he keeps running across on his land. She is hiding something, and as county prosecutor, he can spot a woman in trouble. Skye is struggling to remember, after waking up from a head wound to a man shot between the eyes and fleeing. She is remembering bits and pieces, but she knows it looks bad and would Clayton believe her? She just needs to remember what happened, and keep her head down. The longer she stays in Mountain Bend, the harder she falls for Clayton, and the more she feels she has to hide. This finale for the Doms of Mountain Bend series is a must read, especially if you have read the first two books in the series. It can be read as a stand alone, but is much better as part of the series. Like the other BJ Wane books I have read, this was an excellent story, with a strong heroine, and a Hero who stands by her through thick and thin. Definitely worth the one click!

Skye wakes to find a dead man on the bed and she is on the floor, with her head bleeding and no memory of anything before that moment. Someone appears and tells her to run, so she drives to Mountain Bend, her life dissolving into chaos. As she is sitting in the car, along a back road, a knock on her window reveals Clayton, asking what she is doing on his property. Later she learns that he is also and D.A. and his brother is the sheriff. Oh boy, is she is trouble. The characters have interesting backstories and intense feelings they can not follow through with. The storyline follows them over several weeks as she starts to remember her memories and learn more about herself and Clayton. Even that she enjoys some BDSM in nature and at the club. Loved how she kept herself together as she went through this time period. The memories hit hard and fast. Loved the ending when everyone learns what really happened.

What do you do when you wake up and your "husband" is dead while your supposedly best friend is trying to hurry you out of the house? You RUN!!! Skye has no memory of what happened or even who she is so she escapes and runs. She keeps running into Clayton, who is intrigued by her, even though he's a confirmed bachelor. I loved the humor, the steam...........I just loved this whole book. It kept me engaged in the story. There is mystery, danger, steamy sexy scenes and I loved seeing the characters from the first two books. Will Skye ever figure out who she is and what happened? And if you add a jealous ex of Clayton's, that is another twist that hooked me. I'll have to admit that the reason for what happened to Skye and WHO was involved was something I didn't see coming!! Well written, this story will keep you turning the pages and I will highly recommend this to anyone who needs suggestions!
I was writing the title to my review and I realized that you could actually place this book in a lot of categories. It’s a mystery as Skye wakes up beside a dead man with no memory of who she is or what happened. It’s a Dom/sub relationship book which BJ Wane writes so well. It’s an action book and a few others in there as well. I enjoyed the heat type of action scenes (I’ve gotten reviews banned for using the S-word in conjunction with scenes but you get what I mean) which is another thing that this author writes extremely well. Skye’s amnesia is also treated in what seems to me to be a fairly realistic fashion and there is no her getting hit again just at the right time and getting all her memories back. The very different elements of this book are woven together skillfully to produce a terrific read. Can’t wait to read more about the Doms of Mountain Bend.

Clayton was one of three orphans who ran from foster care and through Father Pat, went to ranch, which he, Shawn and Dakota now run...Clayton is a prosecutor, making sure those who are guilty pay for their transgressions....Skye is an author, whose mother is at a long-term facility, stricken with Early Onset Alzheimer's and is now in vegetative state. She is grief-stricken, not thinking clearly and now has amnesia after getting knocked out...but finds herself in a marriage she doesn't remember, to a man she doesn't know, a best friend she can't recall, who blaming is her for shooting said husband...so she runs...to a small town about an hour or two from Boise, Mountain Bend...where she meets Clayton...who keeps running into the beautiful woman who looks stressed and lost...but you will need to read this twisting, turning, steamy story to see what happens...I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Clayton finally got his story and it was worth the wait!
When I read the first book in the series, I was sure Protector was going to be my favorite. Then I read Avenger and for sure it was going to be my new favorite. But now that I have read Defender, it must be my new favorite. LOL. I really enjoyed all three books in this series. Ms Wane has an amazing talent to write about strong, alpha males who seem to somehow find their perfect mate – even when you are not sure that the are the right mate. The story of Clayton and Skye is a very good one. Their unique story is full of suspense, mystery and lots of steamy D/s action and romance! I loved this book, and it was a great ending to an awesome series!

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review. All of the men of Mountain Bend have been great to read about. This is the love story between Clayton and Skye. Clayton is a great guy who is also a Dom. I really liked him and his connection with Skye was strong. He first found her in her car. He knew something was off, but not that she was on the run from a murder scene. She has had a crazy time putting the blank pieces her life together. Neither of them can deny their attraction but mystery surrounds her. The story begins with drama, mystery and danger. It continues into their growing relationship. You will not want to miss this book. I really enjoyed the suspense in the storyline. Clayton and Skye are great characters

This is a great addition to the Doms of Mountain Bend series and this is Clayton’s story. These men are protective of their women and it appears Clayton has finally met a woman, Skye who is unlike any other woman he has met. Skye is not impressed with Clayton and that makes him more determined than ever to seduce her and learn what she is running from. There is a lot going on in this story and there is danger from an unexpected individual. The story is well written and entertaining in how the two of them come together and find happiness they never expected. It is an excellent read and one I would highly recommend. Somehow I happened to miss this this being available, so even though 'Defender' is the third book in B. J. Wane's "Doms of Mountain Bend" series, it's the first one I've read. Not to worry though, I intend to backtrack immediately and read 'Protector' and 'Avenger' since this one is so good. If you've read the blurb, then you know there is a huge mystery surrounding Skye, and running into Clayton has not only made the apprehensive only questions she can't answer but longing to spend time with the man who has made her want more. The drama, mystery, uncertainty, and danger combined with the tenderness, friendship, caring, and passionate heat this storyline encompasses make it truly a remarkable story to get lost in.
I love this series and this book, Defender, is my favourite. I loved that the reader learns what happened at the same time Skye did and many times I so wanted Skye to confide in Clayton. Clayton was so gentle and loving to Skye even though he was so frustrated with her silence. He never let her see how he felt except to make her feel good. It was nice to see Poppy and Lisa and Shawn and Dakota again and how welcoming they were. I really appreciated the irony of Sharon being instrumental in providing the information allowing Clayton to find Skye’s house, I am sure that was not her intention. A lovely story I thoroughly enjoyed it.
B J Wane never fails to deliver strong and Compelling books. And this once really compels a reader to keep on right from the start, wondering what has happened that Skye has woken up to a dead husband. A really must read, i totally loved this. Definitely worth 5 plus stars...
I was hooked from the beginning. So many questions and the heroine could not even answer herself. I fell for Clayton right from the start, he seemed caring and was not pushy. There was plenty of action, and suspense, and of course stupid things our hero does. This was a very enjoyable read and I could not seem to be able to stop, it had me the prologue. This is an emotional book at times which just adds to the whole story. It was ice that it could be a stand alone and you meet all the characters from this book and the previous ones. Great story.

The only thing Skye Anderson can remember is waking up next to a dead man, and a woman who claims to be her best friend saying she had shot her husband. She runs from the house and ends up sleeping in her car on a remote side road. She was woken by lawyer Clayton Trebek who asks why she is sleeping on his property. Skye moves on, but Clayton keeps seeing her around. He is interested in the stranger but what will he think when he finds out the truth about her? Will Skye's memory come back so she can carry on with her life?
I loved this book.

I've read a lot of books written by BJ Wane; she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is the third book in the Doms of Mountain Bend Series; it is a stand-alone book. The story is about Skye & Clayton; she wakes up with a bleeding head and a dead man in bed next to her; some women is claiming to be her best friend but she doesn’t remember anything and takes off. She ends up in Mountain Bend where Clayton finds her sleeping in her car; he offers to help but she says she’s OK and is going home. Later he sees her again and gets worried about her.
