could-not-finish
October 24, 2025
I was initially interested in this novel because the main character, Dora Ellison, is a garbage collector—the only female sleuth with this profession that I have ever run into. I was even more intrigued when, after I had purchased the book, I found that Dora was Jewish, weighed 240 pounds, and was a kickboxing aficionado. I was interested in her and wondered what kind of a mystery she was going to solve—and how.

Unfortunately, I’ll probably never find out. In the first quarter of the novel, Dora was given about the same amount of page time as at least 10 other characters—most of them murderers, cowards, or corrupt officials. When I found myself wishing that at least 90 percent of them would be killed off, I realized that this book was not for me. I have nothing bad to say about the author’s prose or character studies, I simply don’t want to experience or read about them.

Further research told me that Dora becomes a police officer trainee in book 2 and a private investigator thereafter. In fact, Feldman seems to have completely retooled the series into something quite different from what was originally envisioned. So much for the garbage collector motif, which seems to offer a rich milieu for murder and mayhem. The part I read would get an average rating of 3 despite my dislike of most of the characters and subject matter.

Final Rating: Did not finish.

Note: I read part of the ebook version of this novel that was available on Amazon in December, 2024.

Another Note: This short discussion is included in my book The Art of the Lesbian Mystery Novel , along with information on over 1200 other lesbian mysteries by over 400 authors.

Not Today, the first book in Dora's Rage series by David Feldman, is an amazing book with descriptive characters and a well thought out plot. Dora Ellison, a sanitation worker, is a sweet, albeit freakishly strong woman who would never imagine herself investigating a murder. But someone with disguised voice on repeated calls persuaded Dora's beloved police officer Francesca Hart to investigate a "murder that wasn't a murder" and tragedy strikes, forcing Dora to react furiously. In her quest for justice, Dora uncovers the source of widespread corruption in Beach City, which is being protected by a cabal including the murderer behind the caller's allegations, as well as their current brutal enforcer who is just as enraged and hurt as Dora. So begins all the devilish and dramatic events that will lead to the disturbing and twisted discovery of just what exactly happened.

Dora is one of the complex and multi-faceted characterisations I've read this year; simply one of the assured, dynamic and breath taking debuts of a female character. She's an astoundingly real and beautiful creation. Her toughness and intelligence makes her vulnerable in some ways. In addition to being a good investigator, her pursuit of justice and down-to-earth nature makes her more admirable. The investigation work is overtaking her life and I am glad that author David Feldman is dedicated to making it more difficult for her.

The book has never lost steam and is very well paced. It starts very slow, giving you time to adjust to the new setting and the characters that will be your companions for the rest of the book. Then it gradually throws plot twists and new challenges that need to be overcome. It never drags and it does a great job telling a story that is so close to the reality. Also it brings all the issues to a close and does not leave the reader hanging. By the end, you are on a rollercoaster and your hunger for clues and resolution comes to a climax. Every character has their own story and personal development that fits perfectly into the story. This is a very mature book, with themes that make you despair yet are handled so compassionately that you are never alienated.

All of the characters are very well developed and have concise yet character-defining lines which gives them substantial flesh. Things happen to them that will make you upset and angry, especially Dora, whose side story holds you enthralled and revolted at the same time, as does the truth about murder - but there's nothing gratuitous here, or unnecessarily included or described: it's all relevant. The pacing of the investigation is brilliant, with just enough snippets of information gradually uncovered to keep you hooked and guessing until the end.

One of the things I liked about author David Feldman when I first read this book is the kind of artlessness that he has about writing. There's a naturalness to the way he tells the story as if the important thing is giving you the facts as expediently as possible. Of course, the facts of the story also include what he thinks is interesting about the characters' thoughts, feelings, personal history. You get drawn in by this sense that author is being guided in his narration by an instinct.

Overall, Not Today is a mystery, and a thriller at times, and a detective book - but it's also a political and moral commentary, has one of the original and daring heroines of the genre, and is invigorating in its details. Along with complicated, intricate, and intelligent plot, David Feldman's journalistic prose makes it crisp and logical. Strong, realistic characters, crisp writing and a plot that keeps you guessing has me anxiously awaiting the next book in Dora's Rage series. Highly recommended.

Twisty Story, Memorable Heroine

Dora, an unusual heroine, doesn’t mind being called a garbage man. Dora’s a huge woman, and unapologetic about her size, with strong muscles and a soft heart. I enjoyed getting to know this really unusual character. Dora turns the setbacks and sadness of her past into both a zest for life and into her MMA hobby. Dora would be happy collecting garbage by day and relaxing with her wife, Franny, at night, but she’s pulled into the investigation when Franny receives creepy anonymous calls.

At the beginning, it’s a bit confusing to follow all the characters and subplots introduced, but this comes together in revealing the corruption (and certain closed eyes to the corruption) in Beach City. Give it a little time, and the interlocking relationships between characters becomes clear. This is fiction, of course, but there are also some thought-provoking moral questions in this mystery.

Dora slowly uncovers this convoluted web of corruption in Beach City, piecing together stories, misdirections, and clues to find out who is behind the corruption. I don’t want to reveal much about who’s actually to blame or how Dora finds out, since discovering the mystery is the heart of the book, but I do want to say there’s almost a Miss Marple feel at certain times, when our clever sleuth is stereotyped and underestimated by those around her, much to their detriment. Our Dora is more than just a sleuth here, she’s also physically tough and always ready to defend the weak.

There was great representation in Not Today, too, starting with our unusual heroine, Dora. None of it feels forced, either, instead the wide range of identities helps makes the city feel more realistic and alive.

This is a twisty mystery with a memorable heroine. There are many unpredictable moments in Dora’s discoveries, and it’s a mystery story at it’s heart, but readers will be pulled into Dora’s personality just as much as the unfolding mystery. The end of the novel makes it clear there’s more of Dora’s rage in future books. The sequel, A Gathering Storm, continues Dora’s story, so readers will be able to spend more time with this unlikely but extremely likable heroine

Looking for a mystery book with a strong female lead and complex plotline? Look no further: the Dora's Rage Series Book 1 is well worth the read.

A murder has taken place, but it is not really a murder... or is it?

As each new character is introduced, the reader is pulled deeper into the complicated corruption that bubbles underneath the surface of Beach City. The female heroine, Dora, is portrayed as intelligent, bold, and tough. Her character development continues throughout the story as she learns to channel her anger and past trauma into MMA fighting and then eventually into solving multiple murders. I loved that when Dora is faced with extreme sadness she uses it to fuel her fire rather than letting it consume her.

One of the aspects of the book that I really enjoyed was watching all of the separate character stories weave together to reveal who is really behind the corruption and who is simply a victim of circumstance. A soft critique of this work would be that the characters were revealed very quickly and in rapid succession, making it a bit challenging to remember the small details about each of them. However, once you are halfway through the book everything falls into place as the spotlight is placed on the pivotal characters at exactly the right moments.

I appreciated the complex nature of this story and how realistic it felt, especially with the mentioning of Covid-19. This book is the first one that I have read that mentions the pandemic, and I think it did it in a very tasteful way that added to the challenges the characters were facing in the story. Overall I think it was a great mystery novel that really leaves the reader desiring more. I am looking forward to book number 2!

Unconventional Lead in a Murder Mystery!

Dora and her girlfriend, Franny, are drawn into righting a murder from the past and finding the culprit who has continued to murder over the years—all from an anonymous phone call. From there, we follow our unconventional protagonist, Dora, who embodies the honorable vigilante persona that readers will love to explore throughout this first book in Feldman’s Dora Ellison series.

To capture some highlights, Dora’s character sets the tone for an intriguing read by itself; Most mystery series are led by heterosexual men and the damsel-in-distress archetype of women, which typically prompts the subplot of a romance. However, Feldman chooses to pave the way for representation with Dora as a member of the LGBTQ+ which does not feel pandering or lacking sincerity. Furthermore, the romantic aspects of this novel are not overemphasized to support this character trait, and maintain a natural and realistic pace. Beyond Dora’s sexuality, her personality is also intentional as she is a no-nonesense, assertive character who refuses to back down from any altercation. This is kept consistent throughout the novel, from start to finish, which really immerses readers in the realism of her character exposition.

Other highlights include the opening of this novel, which was an automatic hook. Feldman holds no cut cards when it comes down to the crimes, and without giving much away, the ending to this series is satisfactory and holds promise. Without a doubt, Feldman will only continue to explore mystery in a refreshingly innovative way.

Circulate the thoughts in mind and gather the force to decide. This one's a ride where your spells would lose its power in front of the spell the author has created. While working on one's existence, one often tends to forget the ones around. The book's a completely giant read with an experience like that of an adventurous era mostly. With no demands to be fulfilled. Author being an experienced one, has designed this book totally like a game where the story is unveiled level after level and every level, demands the reader to be a pro.
While the life of protagonist turns explicit on the inside of her own peaceful world and the mind unknowingly, one also starts to witness how a totally new world is rebuilt in this book. With the portrayal of Dora and her personal life, right from the start, the book appears like a gem. Terms which are no longer in use are seen in usage and moreover, when one has a direct view on the face of the protagonist, one can actually imagine the entire journey and the fight the protagonist fights. The book's a truly unique and built up with a very well narrated and and an unheard plot. Found the book to be way more interesting than I expected it to in the beginning. The plotline is very well executed and so is the narration made, in a crispy manner. I liked it thoroughly although there could have been made a few improvements. A book worth the time I took.

Book - Not Today; A Dora's Rage Mystery
Author - David E Feldman
Genre - Mystery

The book '' Not Today A Dora's Rage Mystery '' by Author David E. Feldman is the first book of the Dora's Rage series is mixed combo of thriller, mystery and detection.
Sanitation worker Dora Ellison would never dreamt of investing a murder but when her beloved police Lt. Fransesca ' Franny ' Hart is coaxed by a disguised voice on repeated phone calls to investigate ' a murder that wasn't a murder ', and tragedy strikes the enraged natural born fighter won't let it stand.

Q) Will Dora bring a twisted murderer to justice, despite being the killer's next target ?

In her quest of justice, Dora uncovers the source of widespread corruption in Beach City, which is being protected by the cabal including the murderer behind the caller's allegations, as well as their current brutal enforcer who is just as enraged and hurt as Nora.

The author crafted the character Dora with intense amusement and interest. Her toughness and intelligence makes her vulnerable in many ways. The twins and turns are perfectly placed which will give you a thrilling experience. Overall it's a great read.

Not Today!: A Women’s Sleuth Vigilante Mystery Thriller (The Dora's Rage Series Book 1)
by David E. Feldman

The title and cover page of a book are so attractive. More than the story, its the way it was written made it more beautiful and engaging. The book is free of debutant grapple .
A fast action packed page turning book, i really enjoyed the main character and the way the story was told.
Dora is one of the complex and multi-faceted characterisations I've read this year; simply one of the assured, dynamic and breath taking debuts of a female character. She's the most developed character, but one of a cast of other fairly distinct characters whose personal stories spread.
Along with complicated, intricate, and intelligent plot, David Feldman's journalistic prose makes it crisp and logical.
The language of this book is clear. The writing style of this book is laid-back. The cover and title of this book are absolutely appropriate.
The overall experience is a great way to convey not only the value of the book but also what experience one can expect when reading it. This is a beautiful piece of writing , i appreciate the facts presented through out the book.
I like this book very much, the story is wonderful. The author made this book very interesting, so get ready to read this book.

David E Feldman’s debut novel: Not Today: A Gripping Mystery Thriller (A Dora Ellison Mystery Book 1) is an exciting, complex, and fast-paced novel. The book follows Dora Ellison as she gets pulled into investigating a murder. Dora is a strong female lead who is passionate, kind, and clever. I really enjoyed seeing her unable to help herself but get involved with trying to help people. She also has her own intriguing and dark backstory that really helped make her feel like a fully fleshed-out person with a lot of depth. Right alongside Dora is her partner Franny who is a police Lt. Franny received a call about a murder listed as an accident and when she begins to dig, she finds a mess of dark secrets and coverups. Dora throws herself in to help Franny as the danger grows. The plot moves at a fairly fast pace, throwing twists and intriguing character development at you when you least expect it. The book is a captivating read because it keeps you guessing and understands the importance of complex characters. It is the kind of book that is hard to put down until all the answers have fallen into place. The world it pulls you into is a dark one full of secrets and corruption and the characters are interesting and fun. If you are looking for an engaging mystery thriller with a strong female lead, I would highly recommend this read!

A fine debut

There's a lot to like about Feldman's first novel. And there are a few things that need work as well, but overall, I found myself delighted by it. I originally read a republication copy, then re-read it again after publication in order to see if my original impression was the same. I happy to say it was, a!though on the second pass some things came to light that I hadn't seen before.

Dora Ellison, the supposed focus of a "Dora's Rage Series," is a big woman working a. garbage truck. Gay, she lives with the only woman in the Beach City Police Department. She's dipped her toe in the MMA world, although that gets interrupted by Covid. Feldman does a fine job portraying a front line worker who is impacted by the pandemic without making it a plotpoint.

Dora is a great character, and here's my biggest complaint: she doesn't get enough time in the book. She's the most developed character, but one of a cast of other fairly distinct characters whose personal stories spread.the focus to the shenanigans in the town of Beach City. Make.more room for Dora and make less of the skullduggery and plotting and the next one in the series ought to knock some.socks off!

Not today was the first book of Dora’s Rage series by the author David E Feldman, and as fan of action books i found this book very enjoyable with a lot twists and well thought plots i didn’t see coming.
A fast action packed page turning book, i really enjoyed the main character and the way the story was told. Not Today!
This was my first read by the author and would definitely read more.
Dora’s character is fresh and new and i enjoyed how the book lets us build our own opinion about it through our imagination.
This book was recommended to me based on other books i have read of the same style, and i don’t regret it.
Not today’s genre is thriller and mystery with a detective twist to it.
I believe this book would make a great movie, as the author himself is a filmmaker.
Suspense is guaranteed in this book you’ll feel hungry to read more. The pace is gradual which allows you to get to know the characters one by one.
This is definitely a book for you to read.

This book definitely amazed me from the Prologue itself, I definitely did expect a murder book, However what I didn't expect www the uniqueness of the book in terms of a strong woman protagonist who from a sanitation worker ends up solving a murder, that is Dora Ellison for you.

The book starts with the murder of Anne and then fast forwards to the non nonsense Lt. Francesca Hart getting a call that the murder isn't solved and the police are mistaken if it's an accidental death h and not murder. Though Lt Franny as she is called by most dismisses the call at first, she cannot ignore it after some time.

How and Why does Dora eg involved with the phone call of Lt Franny? How does Dora's life change from then on? Who has made the phone call to Lt Franny?

One needs to read this very exciting, thrilling and definitely a very gripping novel to find out what happens in their town, Beach city.

The author has written it simply yet very attractive and intense, I loved the flow of the book, very captivating till the very end.

This is the first of the series and I am very excited to read more of this series.

Beach City is a beautiful town on the East Coast that has quite a checkered history. Sometime in the past, the police commissioner murdered the mayor.

Dora Ellison is happy to be a sanitation engineer (garbage collector) until her roommate, police Lt. "Franny" Hart is killed under mysterious circumstances. Dora starts getting anonymous phone calls asking her to investigate "a murder that wasn't a murder."

Dora finds a wide streak of corruption in Beach City. If a person goes along with the status quo, everything is fine. If a person complains, for instance, about illegal wastewater dumping, they are suddenly arrested in trumped-up charges, or their business is suddenly shut down by the Health Department. Who is behind the corruption? Is it the mayor, or his chief of staff? Does Dora find out the truth?

This is a gem of a story, that is first in a series. It has a strong female character who is not the usual ex-cop trying to make it as a private investigator. It's a present-day tale with a unique reason for the corruption, and is very much recommended.

The book "Not Today" by David E. Feldman is the first book in 'The Dora's Rage' series. The storyline is about the female detective Dora Ellison. The book cover describes Dora as 'A tough woman who solves mysteries, finds love and doles out justice', and this description of the book's protagonist is so apt. Dora is a sanitation worker, but starts investigating a murder and goes on enforcing vigilante justice. The character of Dora is very well sketched, as are the other characters. The book also has subplots, which fit well in the narrative. The narrative is fast paced, and the climax also packs a punch.

This book has a simple writing style and the narrative is intriguing, full of twists and turns which makes the book a gripping read. This mystery thriller is a recommended read for fans of the genre and for readers wanting to read a book with a strong female detective protagonist. Looking forward to read the next books in this book series.

Not today book by David E. Feldman is a perfect murder mystery that will keep the readers on the edge until the end.

Dora Ellison is a simple working woman, whose life is normal, until her talks with Lt.Francesca, this made Dora become an investigating pro and a justice vigilante.

The story revolves around the murder investigation of Anne. The case took a turn until those persuading calls said that "Murder isn't a murder".

How did this call bring Dora into this case? and how did she solve this case besides the life threats she had?

To know the answers to these questions you should grab this book.

This book is a complete package of mystery, thriller, Romance, Action, Heroism, etc. The great success of this book is that The author not only made a gripping plot but he also presented it with an intriguing narrative.

This book is a complete fast pacer so the reader will never feel bored till the end.

So I recommend this book to all mystery thriller lovers.

The book 'Not Today' is the first book in 'The Dora's Rage' book series. The book is a women's sleuth vigilante mystery thriller. The book follows the protagonist Dora Ellison, a strong female sleuth who is investigating a murder. I like reading detective thrillers and though there are many books in which we find female detectives, but the character of Dora is written differently. I particularly liked the character of Dora, and how her character has been sketched by the author. The characterization of the other characters is also good.

This mystery thriller read is of 250 pages and not that long, and can be completed in a few sittings. The book has an intriguing storyline which is full of twists and turns. This book is a page-turner and a riveting read. I am looking forward to read the next books in the series, and to read more about the character of Dora Ellison.

Not today is the debut book of the author, David E Feldman. It is a mysterious read. I found the story very gripping. It had the completed potential to keep me hooked till the end. Not even a single time I felt like stopping the read. So a 5/5 for the amazing storyline. The narration was excellent. Character building was also well done by the author. The characters actually took in my attention. The pinch of romance was something I appreciate about the book. As you move ahead you will start thinking about what next? This question was always going on in my mind. The clues of the mystery to be solved was very intriguing. Being a debut book the author has done really well I feel. Just the cover needs improvement. It could have been more attractive and eye Catchy. Dora's character is my favourite from the book. Great work by the author. Highly recommended read.Waiting to read more.

A superb thriller that had me guessing until the very end. The mystery at the heart of the novel is expertly revealed in a series of interlocking stories that culminate in a gripping climax. Dora Ellison is definitely not the average person/heroine - large, lesbian, a garbage(man) collector, who finds herself in a corrupt city and is forced to act by events in her life. To begin with, there are many names and situations thrown at the reader, and this is slightly confusing, but persevere. Because the story unfolds as you slowly sort them out, and then things begin to make perfect sense. It is a well-written book, weaving together corruption in city hall with a death that happened many years ago that has come back to haunt some prominent people. I look forward to more of Dora’s investigations.

Dora Ellison the protagonist is a Sanitation Worker. She never imagined herself imagining that she will investigate a murder. But when her beloved police officer Lt. Francesca is coaxed by a unknown phone call. The tragedy happens and the life turns upside down.
.
Will she Abel to solve the case , being her life in danger as a target of very murderer. Or will she be successful in solving this case. This case also reveals some shocking scams while in progress which makes this story unpredictable.
.
The characters are strong and settle nothing less than for justice. If you like strong female heroines, amateur LGBT women sleuths, mystery romance or vigilante justice, you’ll love this gripping, first-in-series literary, detective mystery crime thriller. Then this book is for you. !!

Enjoyable!

Young couple making out whilst his parent were out. They returned unexpectedly and in his panic to keep Anne quiet, she died.
Officer Francesca Hart received a call saying this death was documented as an accidental tradegy... But it was really murder and covered up. The calls kept coming, curiosity got the better of her so she started nosing around. She was getting too close for comfort.
This is a good, creative plot with mystery and suspense at its core. There are quite a few characters to get your head around which I struggled with a little but the big, unexpected twist in the middle of the book kept my interest piqued and then I was hooked. Well written and look forward to reading more.

Fast paced and tightly plotted

Highly enjoyable thriller with taut pacing, well rendered characters deftly drawn and a tough, likeable heroine
Dora is an unlikely crusader, content with her partner Franny, their cat and her job - as a garbage woman. But Beach City is founded on lies and corruption and old secrets. When Franny, a policewoman, starts to dig into the murky politics of city hall things become increasingly dangerous. Dora finds she must channel her rage to exact justice.
The tone and writing reminded me of classic thrillers from the 80s but with modern twists and turns . It took me a few chapters to really get into it but then was hooked.

The world needs strong women. Women who will lift and build others, who will love and be loved, women who live bravely, both tender and fierce, women of indomitable will.
For many females, it is common to have felt limited by others’ expectations or perceptions, or looked over due to gender stereotypes at least once in their lives. However even against all odds, women have doubled down on their determination and drive in order to accomplish something incredible.
If you want to learn about such a dauntless woman, this is the book you should grab without delay.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Enjoyable!

The author crafted a good story, with believable characters and an interesting plot. I found myself rooting for Dora and wondering how the book would end.
I wish the author had interspersed the descriptions of the characters instead of putting them at the beginning of the story, but perhaps that's just my preference.

I'm not sure why it was rated so highly. This book is hard to follow at times as it jumps from the primary characters' points of view to the views of non-important characters many times, adding very little to the story. The mystery behind the plot was interesting and kept my interest. I sure hope the future books in the series are much better.
