He is desperate to remember. She will destroy everything to forget.
Konnor: Up until now, my life has been a mirage of sorts. Of dark, lonely places. Of bourbon and women. I don't care. I think I'm pretty happy really. But then she happens. . . Blesk: He wants me. He'll do anything, drop everything, to have me. But when he uncovers who I am and what I've done, he'll rue ever facing me. I've already buried everything he loves. . . We both have secrets. Mine are harrowing. His, heart-breaking. Just merely being together threatens to expose everything we have tried to escape. Will finally facing our past bring us peace. . . or spark chaos? • • Facing Us is Nicci Harris's debut novel and the prequel in THE KIDS OF THE DISTRICT series. This book features a damaged hero and a sweet yet witty heroine. Both main characters will fight for each other. Expect flashbacks, abuse, and difficult subjects. It is a love story first. Drama and mystery second. Word porn third. Enjoy.
"She (Nicci) shines in crafting novels that toe the line between dark and dangerous, and sweet and sexy, which culminates into a deliciously sinful story of passion, truth, and acceptance." - Jessica @jessicareadsit
This had an unusual back story the revealed revelations concerning both Konnor and Blesk’s pasts providing so much extra nuance and emotion more than your regular new-adult college romance. The characters themselves here are definitely imperfect and broken but also so very real and both are using particular coping methods to just function normally.
I enjoyed this so much more than I anticipated and I definitely want to now read the rest of the series. This is a prequel to that and this managed to entertain whilst still teasing me with little gems throughout and all the future possibilities here totally whetting my appetite for more.
This has deep triggers but also lots of healing and soul searching. It’s not really a girl meets boy and they fall deeply in love conventional kind of story but more about the broken pieces of two separate individuals that fit together making a whole out of the shattered shards left behind. Two souls mates who have been put through a wringer and each managing to save the other in the process whilst falling deeper in love.
Both Blesk and Konnor go on a journey together into their shared pasts needing the answers and some closure even if those same answers turn out to be ones they don’t really want to hear. I found myself liking both main characters the human nature of their mistakes and inadequacies only serving to endear them to me more.
There were questions to be answered which for the most part were but this still had some unresolved ones and I’m guessing much more will be revealed as this series progresses. The rest of this series is more firmly entrenched within the mafia this one actually isn’t; it is referenced and it definitely has some ties and also overlapping characters but is also totally separate as well this exists on the fringes of that world.
This is definitely an emotional one guys With lots of soul searching and oodles of intensity it’s also well written with plenty of twists and turns and I definitely enjoyed it a whole lot. I’m looking forward to what comes next in regards to this world.
Welp. I finished the book, and the ending had me wishing I'd have DNFed one of the many times I considered it. I believe that this was the author's first book, and it shows. The writing was disjointed and became rambling at the best of times, confusing at the worst. Blesk was completely unlikeable and immature, and the constant GIGGLING like a little girl irked my last nerve.
Konnor was more likeable, despite being a complete alcoholic and a man whore. I kept reading to try and get an answer to who tried to kill Blesk, who really was behind the kidnapping, and so forth, and really never got any answers. I don't like the "keep reading for more" when the next books aren't centered around the main characters, so maybe that's why this is sticking in my craw. Just...didn't like it. His alcoholism was such a focus, and yet we get a quickly epilogue that breezes through his plan to detox. MEH
TW: Alcoholism, sex addiction, kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse
The book begins as the heroine comes to a new college, where her brother studies. She meets the enigmatic stranger, a fellow student who also teaches classes, and sparks fly. He is a callous playboy addicted to alcohol, she is a lonely musician hiding her secrets. Invisible strings pull them together, only for their past to be revealed and tragic secrets to be exposed.
Wow I did not expect where the story went. It's sad, traumatizing and heartbreaking. At the end of the tunnel, however, lies some hope. The hero and heroine are both messed up individuals who are insecure, and co-dependent, coming together due to shared trauma.
I hope they both got therapy. There was so much revealed in the last few chapters, I wish this book was longer. I also kinda sorta wanted an epilogue. Felt abrupt.
However, overall kept me engaged and broke parts of my heart.
Although I feel, like, this book is more suited for a female sense. I quite enjoyed it. It draws you in from the very first page. It's got the humor and right show of emotions. Exactly what I look for in a book. Hey, I think I've just found an author. Can't wait for book 2
Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5) Trope: second chance Angst: 😱😱😱😱😱 Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥 Triggers: alcoholism, sexual assault
I feel a little conflicted about this story. It was a good storyline, if not convoluted at differing points and the writing was pretty good. Having said that, it was a great introduction to this world Nicci's created and left me wanting more. Both MCs were incredibly flawed and difficult to like at points, but they both have you rooting for them.
I did have a problem with how the alcoholism was addressed. The MMC was a lush and seemed to have no one in his life willing to push him except for some slight pressure from his friend. Then, at the end, it was mentioned how he was going to *snap* go through detox and come clean. Personally, I would have appreciated it discussed more seriously since his problem was so severe 🤷🏻♀️.
Facing Us is the first book in the Kids of the District series by Nicci Harris and while the overarching story arc ends on a cliffy, the couple gets their HEA. It is told in first person, from multiple perspectives. I'm definitely going to give this author another go. The bones were their for a great story and I'm looking forward to seeing her writing progress.
This is a dark, mysterious love story I didn’t want to put down. Blesk & Konnor give me all. the. feels. Damaged, broken main characters seem to be my favorite. The chemistry & love between these two was palpable. Both characters have suffered a lot of tragedy in their past & their resilience is inspiring. I’m really looking forward to the next two books in this series & hopefully getting answers to all the questions I have.
This was a heavy start to this series. So just a warning ⚠️ to anyone starting, it has a trigger warning at the beginning because it deals with a variety of heavy issues, such as, addiction, abuse and suicide. As well as many other triggering aspects. All in all, I enjoyed reading 📚 Konnor and Blesks story. They went through sooo much pain 💔 so it was good to see them get their happy ending, even while there was some sort of plot holes at the end.. so a cliffhanger. I'll be honest I loved both the H, Konnor and h, Blesk but their destructive behaviour throughout the book was painful to read.
Konnors self destructive behaviour throughout the story was extremely painful to read, it was understandable as he had a horrible horrible early childhood. But it was the fact that he was a known alcoholic in the book and everyone around him, including his friends knew about his destructive nature. And no one did anything about it which sucked, so it was kind of glossed over until the end when he suddenly decides to detox. It was also annoying that he slept around a lot 😒 even when him and the h were "not together" but clearly TOGETHER TOGETHER if that makes sense. 🙄 She found out and after a little drama, slept with him.
Blesk on the other hand, had a lot of self hate for her self when it came to a lot of things. It was also understandable that she had issues with sex which only be understood after reading this book. (Don't want to spoil anything) 🥺💔💔 She had been through sooo much so I was rooting for her. As much as I got annoyed and angry with Konnor for some of his actions, I loved them both together. 😍 Also have to say that Elise, Blesks best friend stole the show, loved her and Jax too. 😍😍🥺😫
Again I hate when authors make their Hs absolute manwhores and players, whereas their hs are literally so innocent with limited physical experience. Anyways 😑 moving on...
Nothing about this book was what I thought it would be. From the beginning this book gives you scenarios that slowly start to make sense as the book continues, there's a bit of a mystery within the book and there's a lot of different facets of each of their lives that unfold as we read. Shocking revelations at one point of this book all happening together which made me sit up and go hello, we have a storyline that is compelling. Adoring the fact that this book is Australian, the background is well described without too much Aussie specific dialect therefore it feels Australian without needing a translator to understand it. Feeling compelled to find out everything about this meanwhile I was wary of the trigger warnings, the forewarning was helpful in certain regards. The District is still a slight enigma to me and I'm hoping that the future books give us some more insight behind the curtain so to say. Doubtlessly a story I won't soon forget, these characters have carved out a place in my harem. Blesk's journey to find herself apart from her past is incredibly admirable and Konnor's strength to guide her along the way is what true love is about. Konnor and Blesk are definitely book harem material including how Konnor is entertaining us in mine!!
I loved this story. It’s packed with emotion, mystery, and angst. Konnor is HOT, he has compassion and he’s competitive even though he’s travelled a dark road and been dealt some bad cards. His humour was beautifully depicted on every page and I laughed out loud many times. Then there is Blesk. She’s quiet and timid yet strong. Her story was heartbreaking and I felt her sadness. It’s truly a well written story and I loved it from start to finish. Especially the sex!!! I’ll be reading another book or ten from this author that is for sure! Oh, and one more thing, I hope Erik dies. But I refuse to spoil anything so I won’t say why. Get this book... you won’t regret it.
This book was tragically beautiful. Blesk and Konnor’s story will take you on quite a journey. It’s not an easy journey and at times you think that they might not see a happy ending. It’s tragic and intense and brutal. The author takes you heart and rips it to pieces and eventually sews it back together. Get ready for a roller coaster cause you are in for a bumpy ride.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Blesk and Konnor's story will have your heart breaking and melting in one! their traumatic pasts are never far from their minds but when they meet they develop a connection that goes deep. this story will keep you on your toes with lots of suspense, twists and turns, desires, traumas and scenes/discussions of rape and kidnaping. this is well written with great in-depth character development through out. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It was an interesting story, quite original with the plot. Absolutely loved the twists with the two MCs. Bit confusing and slow at times, some parts I actually skipped, but the story was really different to most out there. Will probably read book two even though it's not about Elise, who I LOVED and really want to have her own book.
Dark read with a lot of triggers. Kidnapping, child abuse, abandonment, violence. Mysteries and secrets make it difficult for Blesk and Konnor. There story is full of twists and turns. Expect the unexpected. A well written story with string developed characters
I liked the premise but I just didn't get fully invested. I don't think the author knew who she wanted the main characters to be and the ending felt like she got bored and just wrapped it up...
It had so much promise and I think as a debut novel the plot is incredible, the writing just left something to be desired.
This book was definitely something. The author is new to me and I received a copy through Netgalley. I read this book in a single day; not quite a single sitting. It was fast-paced and the story was intriguing, but also a tad confusing.
The characters were all very beautiful and charming university kids, which was not surprising since this came up as dark romance. That's apt, but certainly not all. I feel like there should be a trigger warning on this though. The story has twists and turns and a dark undertone. It kept me engaged for sure.
The major reasons I only gave it three stars were: 1. It doesn't really end. It feels like the ending is only 75% of the story and there's a little, "to be continued...". If I felt like I'd at least gotten some answers to the mystery, that would be ok, but this was barely a stand alone and it doesn't make me want to read the next volume. It was so dark and tortured that I want to know there's a reward at the end if I'm going to subject myself to that again. As it is, I feel like I only got half a story that relied on the romance to make up for what we lacked in mystery. The romance was love at first sight, which I can get behind, but also got in the way of the story. That's so confusing, because it is the story too. Again, confusing. It took up too much time and slowed the pace.
2. The major reveals all lead to the need for more major reveals and only some are forthcoming. Just like I said above, it doesn't really end; the major revelations don't really end. You get this major "aha!", which doesn't feel all that major considering the earlier ones, and then it's "to be continued...". It was kind of mean and at least it ought to have made me want to read the rest, but it didn't.
The Prologue ought to connect with the rest of the story and it barely hangs on by a split thread. There's obviously a reason it was included and there is one character that is pertinent to this story, but on the fringes only. Without giving away any spoilers: that information may connect in the larger story arc this author seems to be planning, but it feels disjointed and confusing while reading this novel.
3. There is some major, not quite believable angst that clogs up the middle of this story. I realize this is a romance, but it just slowed the pace to include all the angsty "does she love me?", "does he love me?", "will we be together?" in the middle of the book. It was boring; It felt like it lasted ages and then it turned out it was only 2 weeks? Nah. Pass. I was far more interested in the actual mystery and the story than in the weird angsty, "we still need major therapy, but we'll be together anyway" bits.
4. The main characters are really wishy-washy. To preserve the cool twists and turns at the beginning of the book, the characters are super vague and don't really act like themselves even when you are in their POV. I get the necessity, but it made the characters feel inauthentic and flat. The firsts twists and turns leading to the first major reveal were a bit confusing. I found myself re-reading a lot there and then cycling back to the prologue to see what I missed and why it was there. Didn't get an answer to that last. The characters don't seem to be super into following the clues and revealing more of the story either; if they wanted closure, I feel like it should have felt more urgent, but it didn't.
Also, Elise and Jax steal the show and I want to read about them.
It felt like a lot of build up for a lot of "wait and see!" It was disappointing. I hate when an ending is disappointing. I did enjoy reading it and I wished it had a real ending.
This is book 1 In the kids of district. You hear from the point of view of Blesk and Konnor in first person. Then you hear from Liz and Deacon in 2nd person.
Blesk has just arrived at university and she is so excited to be here and see her brother Eric again. She is taken to orientation by her brother and that’s where she meets Konnor for the first time. She is captivated by him and his ease at talking in front of people. He is giving a speech about education. Blesk meets her roommate Elise who is like a bouncing bunny of energy. But Blesk loves that and thinks that she has met a friend for life.
Konnor is going day by day, drinking and sleeping with his not so stable girlfriend Pem, he says they aren’t really in serious relationship and that it’s mainly just sex. He is entranced by her blonde hair and it reminds him of the sun, but he doesn’t know why he likes it so much, Pem’s character isn’t very nice. When Konnor sees Blesk at the local bar singing, he has to meet her.
I loved this book, it was written really well and I enjoyed the relationship between Blesk and Konnor. I felt so sorry for Konnor and Blesk with their past and the troubles they have had. It’s about time something goes right for them.
I was naughty and read books 2 and 3 before this one, but it still worked. I like how parts of this book are then in book 2 in Cassidy’s point of view. It shows you the timeline of everything that is happening.
Blesk and Konnor meet at college and feel and instant, mutual and intense attraction. It is not long before they realise that the dark and terrifying secrets in their respective pasts are ones they share.
I read this book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed the story. The concept is quite frankly, brilliant and thrilling.
However, I feel like it was over edited down. As such it felt kind of rushed and I really wanted to stay longer. The fact that I couldn't took a lot of wind out of the sails of this story for me.
I would love to see more quiet moments between the characters and more consequence of certain events. An example of this is when a character is raped, and in next to no time at all she is ready for hanky-panky with her boyfriend and I just don't find that believable. This book touches on some really dark subject matters and it feels like the author is not comfortable with them so she keeps it as brief as possible and jumps to the next moment.
The author states at the end that this is her first full length novel and that she looks forward to improving as an author as the series continues and I really look forward to seeing that. I am also eagerly anticipating the next in the series.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Went back and read Blesk and Konnor’s story after finishing the rest. To say it was different than the others is an understatement. But it just goes to show that Nicci’s writing can’t be placed into one category. She can write it all.
Blesk and Konnor’s story was nothing I expected. This is one of those books that make you feel. All the pain, the trauma, the struggle. My heart ached for these two. It was a tough one to say the least.
With it all, these two intrigued me so much. Both individually and together. Their bond is unlike anything else. A heartbreaking history will do that. They found a peace, a familiarity in one another from the beginning. And when their past caught up, truths came to surface, and it all made sense.
This was an emotional ride. But I fell in love with each broken piece in these two. I think that makes their characters even more special. And I was rooting for these two the entire time. 🤍
All my dark romance lovers, where you at? Facing Us-Kids of The District Series BOOK 1, is the first of a series.
This book is a sexy, dark and absolutely unputdownable! I like a book when it can grip me right from Page 1 and this book did that for me and continued till the end. This book has well satisfied the elements in a dark romance whether it is jealousy, rage, passion and longing. The story revolves around the dark romance between Blesk and Konnor. Both of mysterious , painful pasts where one is trying to forget and another is trying to remember and hold on to it. I liked the series of twist and turns in this book and I am glad to have picked this one.
Thank you NetGalley and Nick Harris for providing me with an ARC of this book.
I am so glad we got the story. I read this at the end of the series instead of at the beginning, and was able to piece together quite a bit from reading the other books.
The story of Konnor and Blesk is one full of heartbreak and second chances along with forgiveness.
Both went through some traumatic situation’s. But I can’t determine on if they were actually in love, or if it was just a trauma bond now that they’re older, it seems to be more of love and less trauma bond.
I have been through every emotion in the book for this book. This is a very well written series. I can’t wait to see more from this author.
So I read Cassidy and Max's book first and decided that I have to read Blesk and Konnors book. I have to remind myself that this is the first book in this entire series. Konnor and Blesk were made for each other and instantly attracted to each other. They are both connected to each other and somehow keep circling each other, despite them not knowing they knew each other as children. Now that they finally find each other, but they are no longer the same people.
I can't say that I loved them but the story was pretty good.
I went into this book blind as I do most books because I like to have the full experience.
While I was not expecting it to be so heavy, it was written so well.
I completely enthralled with Konnor, Blesk, Deacon, and Lizzy's stories. I still have a lot of questions that I hope are answered in the rest of the series and I can't wait to make my way through The Kids of the District's stories.
Thank you again to @bibliophilebookstackswithdi for buying me the series - I hope @author.nicciharris knows how much you love her.
Absolutely loved this heart-wrenching read from Nicci Harris. First time I’ve read this author, but it won’t be my last!!!! I was suckered in from page one, needing to understand more about Konnor and Blesk. Some of the twists I didn’t see coming!!! The story was exciting, and the relationship between the two endearing, even through all of the horrible things they had to endure as children.
TW: lots of em. Check the warnings before you read :)
While I think that this books plot and characters were very well developed, I do feel like it might have been a bit too dark for me, even though I do tend to read dark romances. Some areas in the book really seemed to show you some of the darkest things that people can experience. It is definitely very on your edge of the seat in regards to that.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
