"I love you, Max Butcher."

Those words are dangerous. Just about as dangerous as the world I was born into. As dangerous as the ruthless bastards that I call family.
They hurt her.
My. Little. Ballerina. . . My piece of purity.
They hurt her. . .
I wanted to keep the world beautiful for her.
I failed.
So I should let her go. For her own safety and my sanity.
But she crawled into my bed. Settled in my head
Cassidy Slater
Her sweet-talking mouth says those dangerous words. Words I didn't know that I craved. She waits for me at night. Accepts the darkness around me.
Now that's not something a man just lets go of.
I'm a selfish bastard too.
And she's mine.
I'll protect her; it's an eye for an eye and I'm willing to blind the whole damn lot of them.
For her, I'll start a damn war.

Cosa Nostra is the second installment to Our Thing - Max & Cassidy's story. This book features a powerful and moody hero and an endearing and determined heroine. Both main characters are possessive and fight for each other. It is a love story first. Word steam second. Violence, gore, and drama third. Enjoy.

The Kids of the District series is "A Flawless contemporary romance."

Reading the Kids of the District series feels like gorging on a deliciously scrumptious cake, despite knowing it's gonna be bad and hurt you irrevocably in the end, you just cannot help yourself from devouring it. Like an addict, you keep coming back to satiate the need to escape into the district.

I honestly do not know what "evil genius mastermind" class Nicci Harris took but I need to book a spot because this series is deceptively clever. The build-up of Cassidy and Max's relationship is a refined agony, honed throughout the previous book and unleashed with a ferocity only Nicci could create.

I relish the elevated romance within Cosa Nostra as the lines between love, desire, and obsession begin to blur creating an eruption of forbidden passion and ecstasy. Max and Cassidy's relationship is the type of love story that you love to hate, innately they know its bad for them, but like a slut for punishment they pursue it anyway because in the immortal words of Cassidy, "avoiding conflict to prevent a battle, can often start a war on your heart."

Max is the quintessential bad boy mafia- alpha hole and while I loved how raw and carnal his character was, my favorite moments were the quiet spaces in between, where he allowed himself to be vulnerable (or at least attempted to) for Cassidy.

Exhibit A- "I want to fck that sorrow out of her Her sorrow makes me want to set the earth on fire."

Exhibit B- "I may not be able to give her a fairy-tale. But she gives me a break from this nightmare."

I enjoyed the complexity of Cassidy's character and the tremendous growth she's made throughout the series. The district's darling has seen the seedy underbelly of Max's reality and the dark encounters threaten to consume her entirely. As she picks up the broken puzzle pieces of her life and begins arranging them, Cassidy truly begins to mature and I couldn't help but tear up to see my little girl all grown up.

"He's scaring me. And it's killing him. It's breaking me"

Oh Nicci Nicci Nicci, just when I thought my poor heart couldn't take another beating you reached through the pages, ripped it out, and ran it through the grinder shredding me completely.

I mean, holy f**king plot twist! The last couple of chapters honestly floored me with an overwhelming surge of emotions. Cosa Nostra is the epitome of exquisite torture and I am unashamed to admit that I ugly cried. While I finally got my answers from book one, I couldn't help the crushing sense of finality that comes with the end.

In true Nicci fashion, she doesn't give you the ending you've been dreaming about and wishing on a star for, oh no, that would be too humane, instead, she serves it up true District style with an intricately woven finale that is equal parts raw, messy complicated and oddly fulfilling.

The Kids of the District is not your average story, but then as a reader, do you really want that?

Thanks to the author for providing me with an arc in exchange for my honest review.

This is the conclusion to Max and Cassidy’s story here we get to deal with the emotional aftermath of the fallout from book one and both Cassidy and Max are struggling. Cassidy because of what happened and Max because of his failure to keep her safe and the repercussions of all that.

Both need time to return back to the comfort of there own personal world just Max and Cassidy where they are able to just shut things out and focus on themselves. This had some wonderful twists and turns that definitely impacted me deeply some joyous and others not so much and there love will definitely be tested here to the absolute max.

This one was slightly darker than its predecessor and I really got a feel into just what Max’s life entails working in the district. We also get some questions finally answered some I guessed others I didn’t. We still don’t know everything but a picture has now started to form that is becoming clearer book by book.

Where we left off here (and we do get a HEA for Max and Cassidy) left me wanting to learn more I’m so excited to be starting Bronson’s story next he’s such a contradiction of humour and violence so I’m looking forward to getting up close and personal with him. This series so far has been very enjoyable and I do recommend it.

I came for the smut and ended up falling in love with the story of Max and Cassidy….

The end of this book made it for me. Ugh. It was so good. I cried. CRIED. THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE LAST 20%

One trope I can’t stand and avoid at all costs is the pregnancy trope. The pregnancy usually takes over the storyline, and the lovers seems to lose themselves and their spark and what makes them “them”, but I pushed through and I’m glad I did. The author made sure the characters stayed true to themselves throughout the whole story, and ya know what? I didn’t mind the pregnancy one bit! In fact, it added to the story in such a good way, and I wouldn’t change a thing!

BUT OMG IM GONNA MISS MAX AND CASSIDY, but mainly Max of course cause he is perfection.

Now I find myself not wanting to end this review, because that means their story is over, and it breaks my heart.

WHO JUST WANTS SMUT AND ENDS UP CRYYYYIIIIING AND SO IN LOVE WITH THE STORY?!?!?! Man, I’m all up in my feels!

Kudos to the author, I’m definitely checking out your future works!

Listen this was a hate read from the start. Yes, from page one because of how much I disliked the characters from the first book. They just suck. I did thoroughly enjoy hate reading this book though as it was intriguing enough to want to know how much more Cassidy and Max could suck. I was stoked to read this series after seeing out of context quotes on booktok/bookstagram (my toxic trait - sue me), however after having to read the entirety of 'Our Thing' only to find out I had to continue to even find this out of context quote I couldn't help but feel entirely disappointed with everything this duet had to offer. Everything was a contradiction. So much does not make any sense, the author's writing style (seriously people would jump around in a conversation and random threads appeared all over the place), why I continued reading, the Australian colloquialisms (I'll forgive this one as my own ignorance), why these characters are even together, but most importantly the plot of this book (even the book had no idea what the plot was supposed to be). Cassidy is the most naïve pick me girl I've ever had the pleasure of occupying my thoughts, and Max? Max is just a horrible person. I've read and enjoyed dark romance before but this MMC was not the morally grey hero you secretly root for because although he does bad things he treats the heroine like a goddess, queen, and human being with dignity all in one. Max does none of this. Listen, I like a little toxicity in fiction, but this was hazardous waste and not in the enjoyable way. I needed Detc. Olivia Benson to show up and help these characters sort their lives out. As insufferable as both characters are I still do not want them together. Overall I have lots to say but am too lazy to write it all out. Someone call me, I'll rant about it.

5 stars for Bronson and Toni however, they were wonderful and deserved more everything. I’d also like to add that I have nothing against the author and am completely in awe at writting and publishing your own novel, I support your dreams as an author and congratulate you on all your accomplishments. Seriously it’s pretty cool. I just can’t support Cassidy and Max.

I don’t even know where to start or how to put into words how much I loved this book -this series. “Ineffable. That's what this is. This thing of ours. It’s fucking ineffable.“ It is BY FAR my favorite read(s) of 2021. Cassidy & Max complete each other. He is hard, she is soft. She is light, he is dark. Their love is magnetic & fierce & everything I want in a romance story. Together they endure difficult circumstances & grow closer in the process. I have so much I want to say, but don’t want to give anything away. I ugly cried through a good portion of this book (I am an emotional hot mess express, so take that warning how you will). Author Nicci Harris broke my heart, but mended it together better than it was before. I love the Butcher Brothers & the supporting characters of this series. Max will FOREVER have my heart, but I cannot wait for Bronson’s story! If you are triggered by: Violence. Gore. Trauma. Graphic sex! Too many emotions! Then do not read this book!

Cosa Nostra was such an amazing follow up to the first book in the series. I loved seeing the progression of Max and Cassidy's relationship. This book was even more special as I felt it highlighted how in-depth Max felt for Cassidy. I loved every second!

This story brought Max and Cassidy's story to an end. In it we see the tough Butcher brought down to his knees by the prim and innocent Ballerina. This story was very well written and made me cry on more than one occasion. It hit me right in the feels with all the turmoil, drama and pain that surrounded the couple. Furthermore, I love that even though their story might be ending, there is a continuing story arc that will continue in Bronson's book! My only complaint is the abrupt ending at the end of their story! I would have loved to see more and life "after!" I did not want it to end! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

I was completely blown away with this book. If you haven’t read Our Thing you need to read it first. Because this is the second book of Cassidy and Max’s story.

I have so many words to say about this book but I find it hard to express how amazing it is. I won’t be giving any spoilers in this review because you just need to read it to believe it. I think I cried through the last 5 or so chapters. And I’m not a huge crier at all. I felt like the author completely tore me apart with her words. She made me feel like I was right their with them through this journey. I cried and laughed with them, I felt their sadness and pain. You will go through it all with them. I was so sad at the end, not because the book made me sad but because I could have read their story for days. I’m glad this isn’t the end of this series and we get Bronson’s story next. Just keeping my fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too long.

Ugh I'm not sure how to feel. Book 1 was a cliff hanger and then book 2 was great until the end. Felt like the characters could've had so much growth but didn't. Also the almost three years max was gone was just glossed over, really didn't fit their relationship and kinda ruined their love story

Oh my giddy aunt!!!

You know when you’re reading books and you have a few really good ones but then there’s the ones in between that are mediocre at best…THEN ALONG COMES THE ONE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR. Yea that’s this book.

I really wanted to dislike this book because damn was Cassidy annoying, but for the life of me I couldn’t. It was everything. Max Butcher is without a doubt going to make your panties drop and walk themselves to the laundry basket because there’s no point in wearing any when Maxipad is about. The guy has every lustful book boyfriend trait all perfectly moulded into a tattooed hunk of a man. He’s broody, possessive, alpha, charming, sweet, sexy…. And the stamina of the man JEBUS (IYKYK)

Then there’s Toni, he’s a dream of a best friend!! I want him as mine. There’s vulnerable Xander (Nicci Harris please tell me we get a Xander book!!) Then you’ve got smooth and charming Clay, and then there’s Bronson. An absolute beast with a heart that’s probably going to break mine. Even Butch made me a gooey mess with his roundabout way of protecting his boys.

I won’t ignore the fact that I wasn’t a fan of Cassidy, even though I get why she was the way she was. But what I will say is by the end of both books I felt every emotion with her. And because of Nicci’s superb writing, I got her, I got every annoying, naive, vulnerable, needy piece of her and I wholeheartedly changed my opinion of her.

There’s a couple of twists, one I saw coming and one I didn’t. And that one ruined me. Like snot dribbling, ugly crying got me. And that friggin’ letter. I WAS A MESS!!!

There’s so many more amazing bits to this book. The sex is off the chart, the friendships are on another level and the love and loyalty is what makes this book’s heart beat.

Our thing and Cosa nostra by Nicci Harris

I read the two books combined in a single book,so it's a joint review!

Strictly 18+ 🥵🔥

TW:-Sexual assault,violence,abuse,gore,blood,death

Oof🥵🔥 I'll call this EMOTIONAL EROTICA than mafia romance👩‍❤️‍👨

I loved Moody Broody Max and Cute Clever Cassidy❤️More than anyone else,I resonated with Toni because just like him,I'm the go-to person for innuendos in my friends circle so much so that if I'm being serious, people are still trying to figure out what's the joke there😂
Bronson's character somehow tells me he has a deep ache and profound grief that makes him mask himself with humor and sarcasm🥺🤧

"You're an asset. Leverage. This is what they do. It's the long game. It doesn't look that bad at first, which is how you miss it. It's a favour. It's a kindness. It's a sponsorship. But then they have claws in every part of your life and one day, you sit up and wonder how you’d gotten in so deep. . ."
Shudder right?

Ch30 of book1 Our thing, deserves special mention because until then the story was oscillating between romance and the sneak peeks of mafia in the District and what secrets lay therein..but this chapter...this chapter explained "A thief is a criminal until he's stealing to feed his kin. A neglectful mother is a bad mother until she is working two jobs to give her children the best opportunities. A gun is terrifying until it's what's keeping you safe, and then you're terrified without it." which Cassidy thinks in a chapter long before this one...The way she was frozen but later stood up for herself and like desperate times call for desperate measures?,she just did it!I loved her more in this chapter.

Okay,so I wanted to review this yesterday but saw that book 2 Cosa nostra, was right there after book1,so....here I am!
I cried after Carter's story😭
I cried during chapters 31&32 as well
Sooo,Nicci are you fond of those chapter numbers or what?

I loved that the penalty wasn't overridden by using influence. That was the real test of love,to endure,to wait, although love shouldn't be tested, should be cherished.

Lastly,DO NOT bring your feminist brain here,it's for your closet romantic with grey areas.

Wow, what a conclusion to Max and Cassidy’s story! 😮‍💨

We finally got more depth to the overall plot and so many secrets were revealed. I loved how Max was still very much Max…possessive, rough around the edges, and never the sweet, gentle type but we also saw how much he evolved as a man in love. The author did such a great job showing how his childhood trauma shaped who he was, and it made his growth even more powerful and you really feel for him and his brothers.

The plot twist toward the end left me shocked and even with all the chaos and drama, I’m so glad Max and Cassidy finally got their true HEA. I would have rioted if they didn’t lol.

This family’s story is far from over though and I honestly can’t wait to dive into Bronson’s book next.

Loved this book, it was so fun seeing Max and Cassidy continue to progress. I really like how this author explores overcoming trauma. It doesn’t happen over night and sometimes we do selfish things while trying to understand the new version of ourselves. I read these out of order so I knew some of the things that were coming. I do wish we saw more of Cassidy at the end of the book during the time gap. But it didn’t feel rushed, the writing was solid, just wanted more myself so it’s still 5 stars.

Cassidy and Max are a enigmatic couple from very different worlds. This book saw the two of their morals align and their future plans cemented.

A happily ever after with a twist- creating the ultimate testament to their relationship! And of course we finally got some answers regarding Konnor, which naturally only led to more questions.

Nicci has creating these individual characters so delicately, interweaving their stories into an exploding third book.

Do I want more? One thousand times yes.

4 Max Butcher STARS ⭐

I think book 1 really was the page turner for me, whereas this one kind of just dragged abit more, and to be honest, it lost a bit of the spark that I was expecting from the first book.

But without a doubt I still enjoyed the stotyline, the secondary characters mainly Toni (boy he’s such a hoot and I totally love his friendship bond with Cassidy) and ofc the Butcher brothers. I'm swooning over Max with his broody alpha male stance, and the sweet possessiveness he has for Cassidy but for all that, the sweetest moment was their surprise.

Butcher Boys

I liked this story way better than book one. Having Max’s POV just made the story better. Max is torn between the life he’s always known and being more for Cassidy. The way he loves her is possessive and sexy. I can’t wait to read more about these brothers. I do wish we had more story from his time away.

The beginning was kinda boring but I didn’t want to dnf it.
It was spicy between C&M but I could also do without so much of it.
The last chapters were much better and the ending - aka the first chapter of the next book, I think I’ll check it out.

I have so many things I would love to say about this amazing and emotional book , but honestly I can’t seem to find the right words to express how amazing this story is ( way beyond my expectations. I am a crier and there were so many moments in this book I could not stop balling my eyes out . My emotions were all over the place like a roller coaster.to bs able to experience all the emotions they are feeling right along with them , sadness , happiness , joy , love , Is such a beautiful thing. I loved the second installment of Cassidy and Max's story!! There were explosive secrets revealed and lots of twists and turns that kept me turning pages well into the night. I loved Max and all of his overprotective high-handedness when it came to Cassidy's safety, especially when she stood her ground and didn't let him steamroll her. The ending was delicious and I can't wait to see what happens with the rest of the Butcher boys!

Casa Nostra is the continuation of Max and Cassidy’s story and picks up immediately where Our Thing left off. I definitely recommend reading Our Thing first. Casa Nostra starts with M&C working through the events at the end of Our Thing. I really appreciated how realistically Harris portrayed their struggle here. There are a few MAJOR surprises, which I was definitely not expecting, some smexy times, a small time jump, and a HFN. It’s dual POV which I appreciated. Cassidy is sweet yet strong and Max is an alphahole but still manages to be authentic and vulnerable with Cassidy (*swoon*). The chemistry between M&C is hot.

I gained a soft spot for M&C’s story after reading the first installment and Harris didn’t disappoint to deliver in this one. The story is heavy in romance and fast paced without sacrificing plot. I really felt like Harris took the time to develop these characters and wove a rich backstory with secondary characters just as varied and engaging as M&C. She’s built a very interesting world that I’m really looking forward to reading more about. In my opinion, she’s set the foundation for a really great collection of stories.

This book was waaaay better than the first one.
I enjoyed Cassidy's character a lot more, and it was kind of expected after what happened to her at the ending of the last book.
I loved that we got Max's POV, and I'm a sucker for "i only have a soft spot for her" kind of MMC, specially in mafia romances.
The last 20% got me screaming and ((teeny tiny spoiler next)), the chapter that is basically a letter from Max to Cassidy that has "I love you" written for every day he could be away, AND CONSIDERING IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE SAID IT (he showed it, but never actually had said those three words) got me screaming.
Also, another spoiler ahead, but a pretty deal breaker for a lot of people: that pregnacy trope came OUT OF NOWHERE jajajaja, and actually made the ending more emotional.

I would recomend it to anyone who wants to read a book with romance, a bit of a mafia vibe but with pretty young characters and is willing to wait till book 2 for the story to really get interesting.
