Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the third book in the K-9 Search and Rescue series. I have read the first two books in this series before picking up this book. I have to say I do not think you need to read these books in order because the characters and the storylines are all different. The only thing that is the same in these books is that they all follow a K-9 handler and the K-9 dog. This book is my favorite book in the series. There is non-stop action in this book, and the characters develops very well through out this book. Great read and I did not want to put this book down. Loved it.

Overall, an enjoyable thriller set in the outdoors as a hiker and a ranger get stranded in the Blue Ridge wilderness after a weather event...and there are killers after them! Definitely a high-octane read. What really made the story special to me was that the hero and heroine worked together so well and accepted each other’s strengths so well, with no posturing and ego trips about who should do what. It gave a really good example of how two adults should work together and it also made me very confident about their romance.

Un altro buon libro di questa collana, che apprezzo particolarmente per le sue trame piene di suspense che mi fanno sorvolare sull'aspetto inspirational che non è molto nelle mie corde.

Whhhoooooooossshhhhhh -- that's the sound of me releasing my pent up breath at last. What a thrill-of-a-ride kinda read! And the star of the show is Sherlock the K-9 wonder dog...oh, and his humans too, of course. :-)

This is one wilderness adventure edge-of-your-seater. If the bad guys don't get them, nature will. And speaking of bag guys, the villain in this suspense is pure evil. His relentless pursuit about did me in, never mind the brooding threats of weather and rockslides and wildlife, oh my!

And I love that the heroine has the rescuer/protector role. Derek isn't afraid to admit Autumn's expertise trumps his. He knows he's out of his element and is man enough to admit it. While I do love my alpha heroes, a level-headed one who is secure enough in his masculinity to defer life and death matters to a female professional is all kinds of attractive too.

I listened to the audible edition of this book and I really enjoyed Stacey Glemboski's narration. I'm thrilled that Love Inspired is providing some audible options to its line.

This story was packed with almost non-stop action! When this man, woman, and dog weren’t running for their lives, they were hiding and hoping the bad guys wouldn’t find them. The author did such a good job of describing the awful weather conditions, I felt like I was experiencing it with them.

Both Autumn and Derek had suffered losses in love in their lives. Both were intent on surviving and rescuing Derek’s brother. But both also realized that their hearts were being pulled toward each other. Sherlock was a great rescue dog. He definitely helped Autumn and Derek out of some sticky situations. This was an enjoyable read, which I would recommend for fans of romantic suspense.

Just not my style, I guess. I liked the premise, and the way the two leads worked together and got along was nice, but I never felt really connected to them the way I wanted to be. The writing style wasn't my favorite; it felt like a lot of telling about what the characters were feeling or thinking without letting me really get inside their heads to feel it for myself. And while I don't have a problem with people falling for each other quickly, especially in a dangerous situation, the progression just felt off to me. And I was never really sure where anyone's emotions were going to land from one scene to the next. Overall, the story was intriguing and the characters were sweet, but I just didn't connect with it the way I was hoping to. :P

Also...I may have missed something, but it seemed kind of odd that Derek was in private practice when all the talk about his passion and his cases seemed to center around prosecution. I guess it's possible, but to my knowledge, private prosecutors are pretty rare. That might not bug other people, but it did throw me a bit. :S

Killers on their heels and the elements against them, can Park Ranger Autumn Mercer and her dog Sherlock, help Derek find his brother before it's too late?

Fast-paced and intense, this made for a quick read, as I didn't want to put it down. Engaging from the start, Autumn and Derek go from strangers to people who must depend on each other to survive everything the mountain has to throw at them. Filled with mystery and suspense, and plenty of action along the way. I liked how Derek is honest about his lack of skills in the wilderness, and lets Autumn know that he has confidence in her abilities. They are supportive of each other, and I liked how the gravity of the situation at hand brings them together, and helps them open up about their faith.

Sherlock is intuitive and well-trained, working in tandem with Autumn. Autumn is great at thinking on her feet, and does well under pressure. I really enjoyed the multiple twists throughout, as they fight for their lives.

Overall, an action-packed adventure, with great characters, interaction and one amazing dog! Great for K-9 suspense fans!

Mountain Survival by Christy Barritt is a fast-paced trek through the woods while trying to run from three killers who want to kill the hero and the heroine since she was with the hero. Of course, the Love Inspired Suspense line is a quick romance with a dynamic tension pulling the characters in a number of different directions. Barritt’s addition fits the mold. I enjoyed the plot with the creative tension and the suspense, but because of how short the novel actually is, the romance happens way too fast for me. One minute, the hero and heroine are focusing on how to survive, then they kiss. Now their hearts and emotions are on the line. In my personal opinion, it makes the characters more at risk for danger because now they are worried about someone else who could be in danger. Not only themselves. If Love Inspired Suspense is a readers’ cup of tea, then this book should be right up their alley.

I received a complimentary copy of Mountain Survival by Christy Barritt from Love Inspired Suspense, but the opinions stated are all my own.

Mountain Survival is by Christy Barrett. This book is part of a series of book on K9 search and rescue dogs.
Autumn Mercer trained her dogs consistently since they were her livelihood. She was out on a trail in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains training Sherlock when a man ran across her. He was evidently distressed and upset that the sheriff wasn’t there. Instead of leaving to go get help, Autumn turned towards the way the man had come from and set out to see if they could find his brother who was hurt. The weather was turning bad and they only had a limited time to find him. Autumn wouldn’t do anything to hurt Sherlock. She had found him when she was on the way home from her husband’s funeral so he meant a great deal to her.
Sherlock hit on the scent and led them back to the camp where the two men had been. His brother was there; but also, were three other men there holding him hostage. Now instead of 2 hostages, they had three. What did the three men want and how were they going to deal with Autumn and the other two men?

Mountain Survival is the newest fast-paced, action-packed suspense novel from Christy Barritt. The icing on the cake was the search and rescue dog, Sherlock, who was definitely a favorite character of mine. This book is complete with conflict of man versus nature as well as man versus man (very evil men at that).

While out with her dog, Autumn happens upon Derek who is in trouble and needs help finding his brother. What begins is an adrenaline pumping adventure as Autumn and Derek work together with Sherlock to figure out why these very dangerous men have captured his brother William and have made it clear they want to do away with all them. As I have come to expect in a Christy Barritt book, this story is complete with a strong heroine, nail-biting suspense, and just the right amount of romance.

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Autumn and Sherlock are assigned to this area. They’re looking for someone but that is definitely not the man they run into. Plus he’s handsome. But Autumn is immune to that, right? Derek left his brother to go find help. He’d broken his leg, was in pain, and the weather was shifting. But when they get close to where his brother should be someone starts firing on them.

Can they survive the gunmen? What about the weather? With flash floods and mudslides coming at them plus gunmen on their tail, it’s going to be a long few days, especially when the radio and cell phones aren’t working.

I really enjoyed getting to know Autumn and Derek. They’ve both had pain in the past in relationships, neither are looking for love, but affection starts to bloom as they spend time together trying to survive.

This is a wonderful book. It reads really fast and you’re going to want to read this when it’s nice outside. Definitely not while a thunderstorm is going on or you’re going to be thinking you’re truly in the book! I loved the detail and getting to know the characters. The puppy of course probably stole the show. He’s cute and if you read the book you’ll see how he saves the day.

If you love heart-stopping adventure with a blossoming romance, this is the book for you. Mountain Survival is a real survival story! As a terrible storm is just about to start, Autumn enters the woods. She’s a park ranger who works beside her K-9 Rescue dog, Sherlock. Out of nowhere appears a man, running and desperate. This is Derek, who is trying to find help for his injured brother, William.

Autumn and Derek head back to the brother’s campsite only to find that William has disappeared. They also see blood in the campsite. Wondering where he could be, they know that they aren’t alone in the woods. Now, they have to try and find William.
The story gets even more disturbing when they see the group of men who have taken him. These men all have guns and are talking about capturing Derek, too. Autumn and Derek go on the run, but the storm is worse. Autumn knows where a hunter’s cabin is located and leads Derek there.

They hide out, building a fire in the fireplace to help them dry off from their storm-drenched clothing. But, in the night-time, the men find the cabin and Derek, Autumn, and Sherlock must hide in the back of the cabin’s loft.

Because the storm has caused the roads to become impassible and the river is overflowing, there is no way for Autumn to get back-up from her fellow rangers. She must come up with one plan after another to save their lives. After they are eventually captured by the bad guys, they must endure horrible treatment. They try to survive their injuries, the danger, and their weak, hungry bodies

The heroine is constantly praying and asking God for protection. She and Derek are becoming close in this suspenseful read. I enjoyed finding out what would happen to them and the bad guys. Would they ever escape this awful adventure?

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Autumn and her search-and-rescue dog, Sherlock are running a training exercise when they come across a man who looks to be in trouble. When they follow Derek back to his campsite to help his brother who has broken a leg, he’s missing and there’s a disturbing amount of blood on the ground nearby. People start shooting at them and they realize just how dire the situation is. Can they figure out who the men are and rescue Derek’s brother while they wait for the storm to pass and back up to arrive or will help come too late for all of them?

A suspenseful read with some romance.

Mountain Survival
K-9 Search + Rescue #3
By Christy Barritt

Autumn Mercer loves her job as a search-and-rescue park ranger, but she had no idea that the rescue that she happens upon would prove so dangerous. Can she and K-9 partner Sherlock find the missing and injured hiker before it is too late?

Derek Peterson and his brother William were finally getting together after drifting apart over the years. But when William was injured while climbing Derek knew he had to find help and fast. With a storm, fast approaching stumbling upon a park ranger is more than Derek could have hoped for. But when they make their way to his camp William is missing and the only clue they can find is blood and unknown people shooting at them.

With little choice, Autumn and Derek have to take shelter from the deluge that has moved in. Unfortunately, the men trying to kill aren't put off by the storm. Who are these men and why are they tracking them? If they can uncover the answer to those questions they just might have a chance of surviving and making a plan to find and save William.

Mountain Survival is a well-paced read that takes the reader on a life-or-death trek into the mountainous woods of Virginia. Surviving a killer, battling nature, and dealing with an unexpected attraction what more do you need to keep you turning the pages? This clean-reading Love Inspired Suspense read is the third in the K-9 Search and Rescue series but it can easily be read as a standalone book. So sit back in your favorite reading corner with and a cup of your favorite tea or coffee and escape into an evening or two of reading.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Mountain Survival by Christy Barritt is part of the Love Inspired Suspense K-9 Search and Rescue series. Park Ranger Autumn Mercer is doing training exercises with her K-9 partner Sherlock when she comes across a man running for help. Her decision to offer aid launches her into a quest to survive.

Derek Peterson needed to find help for his brother who suffered a broken leg after a fall while they were camping in the mountains. Grateful to find a park ranger, he leads her back to their campsite only to find his brother missing and gunman taking shots at them. To make matters worse, the weather turns against them, making survival nearly impossible in the best of circumstances.

I love weather and nature survival stories like this! Not only are the characters in mortal danger from the bad guys, the weather or terrain could kill them first. Another part that I like about reading Love Inspired K-9 stories is how the dogs are portrayed. They are a main character in the story and Sherlock is a great one.

If you’re looking for a light, quick, intense read with a lovable dog this Love Inspired Suspense story is a great choice. I hope you’ll enjoy Mountain Survival as much as I did.

Mountain Survival By: Christy Barritt is part of the K-9 Search and Rescue series through the Love Inspired Suspense Line. While part of a series, each book is a stand alone. In this story, we meet Autumn Mercer and her K-9 partner, Sherlock. Autumn is a park ranger. She meets Derek in the Virginia mountains. Derek’s brother is missing. Instincts kick in and they want to help. I love how Sherlock is so well in tune with Autumn. The details that the author has put into this story to show the bond between K-9 and handler. Sherlock jumps right into it trying to track Derek’s brother. What they don’t count on is being thrown into a fight for their lives. Whoever has taken and harmed Derek’s brother now has their sites set on Autumn, Derek and Sherlock. The setting of this book is the Virginia mountains. The action will make your heart pound. The book opens with action and does not let up throughout the whole book.
I have read several books by this author. She does such a great job creating real characters and a unique story line. She will always take you on a ride that will leave you speechless. For this book, carve out some uninterrupted time. You will not want to stop reading once you start.

Let us be honest here….A good edge of your seat suspense is hard to come by. However, Christy Barritt’s books are some of my favorites because of the mystery/suspense combinations along with her sense of humor and the depth of her characters. Mountain Survival was a fantastic roller coaster of up and down emotions and I LOVED it. Christy Barritt manages to keep the suspense building trough the whole book in a way that is both realistic and intriguing. Autumn and Derek had good chemistry, and did I mention Sherlock? Plus, I really enjoyed the survival aspects of the story and I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the characters surroundings, it helped me feel like I was there with the Autumn, Derek, and Sherlock.
This book was packed with fast-paced suspense from beginning to end and I could not read it fast enough. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

For fans of romantic suspense that’s heavier on the suspense side of things, Mountain Survival by Christy Barritt is a book you should definitely add to your to be read list.

From the moment Autumn and Derek cross paths, things ramp up and just keep getting worse for these two. Men with guns, storms, and a missing brother kept me turning the pages quickly. Derek and Autumn have both suffered loss and are gun shy when it comes to giving their hearts away, yet there is an undeniable pull between them.

Add in Sherlock (Autumn’s search and rescue dog) who saves the day on more than one occasion, and this book is a definite page turner from start to finish.

Mountain Survival is the perfect read for the suspense loving dog lover. It is book 3 in the K-9 Search and Rescue series, but as this series is really just a collection of books from various authors featuring search and rescue dogs, they can all be read as standalones.

In this story, we meet park ranger Autumn as she's out with her dog Sherlock where they come across Derek, out looking for help for his brother who'd broken his leg as they were out camping. When they set out to help, it seems that they aren't the only ones in the woods and there is much more danger at hand than a broken leg. The action kicks off right from the very beginning and doesn't let off right through the end, making this a fast paced read perfect for anyone who loves action and doesn't have a ton of time for reading. In some ways it did feel like perhaps the romance was a bit rushed and I found myself wishing that there was more time to really see the romance developing more, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. I think pet people will especially enjoy the relationship between Autumn and Sherlock even more!

Overall, this was an fun read that fans of romantic suspense will enjoy!

I wanted something light and this fits the bill in that way. It did seem that there was very little in which the dog was involved. The woman protagonist seemed to be front and center as a superhero.

Not for detail-oriented readers, but fans of Love Inspired Suspense will probably like it.

I enjoyed the fast-paced plot, the suspense, and the mountain setting.

I was disappointed, however, when I kept running into spots that just hadn’t been well researched or thought through. Keep in mind that I’m someone who has gone on night hikes, spent time next to flooding streams, and listened to hundreds of hours of law enforcement (including park ranger) radio conversations. My top annoyances: 1) While attempting to hide, the characters made lots of dumb mistakes that in the real world would give away their location (lighting fires and shining flashlights at night). 2) The rangers’ radio conversations were unprofessional, inefficient, and ineffective. And some of the rangers didn’t hear something on the radio which they ought to have heard.

The villains kept alternating between being smart and prepared and capable, and being ill equipped and underprepared for their mission.

I was also disappointed by what was missing: I hoped for more personality and doggy-isms from Sherlock. I hoped for a glimpse of a Christy Barritt quirky character. I hoped the protagonists would be a little more clever and do things to fool/misdirect/confuse the villains.

The writing was good, focused, and well paced. I noticed about a dozen typos/copy&paste mistakes (in my Kindle edition).

Derek and Autumn met in dire situations and told they had to solve a mystery concerning Willams, Derek's brother. This took the through twists and turns as they both discovered things that made them better individuals.

It was refreshing to read how their love grew. It wasn't love at first sight but it was beautiful all the same.

The faith elements of the book was very inspiring. I loved how Derek seem to pray at every turn. I admired the strength and grit of Autumn, she was so brave and courageous im the midst of danger.

Suspense and action filled book that was thrilling.

October/Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia

This takes place over a couple of days. The story involves a lot of action. There are storms and chases and landslides and shootouts. This made the story enjoyable. I also liked the dog. He was my favorite character. The couple were okay. I thought they were bland. There is a happy ending for them.

Oh my goodness, I nearly read this in ONE sitting, it was just THAT GOOD!!
I was slightly confused at the beginning when Ranger Autumn is giving her search and rescue dog, Sherlock, a shirt to smell from her colleague thinking they need to find that woman when they stumble across Derek. I guess the colleague wasn't actually missing that it was just a training exercise because once they find Derek and the dangerous storm is nearby, everything else is forgotten. Then they are being shot at and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!

Favorite character FOR SURE is Sherlock...he's a dog, but SO WELL WRITTEN on exactly how a dog would respond in every situation...how does Barritt DO THAT??! I was actually more worried about Sherlock in every threatening situation, more so than the people getting hurt, making this an even better page turner than I could have anticipated. Truly, I went to bed reading it and then the moment I woke up had to keep reading.

Derek is a hero in his own right even though he's the civilian in the story. His concern for his troublemaking brother is genuine and also nicely written.

The romance does kind of happen fast, but I had no trouble accepting it considering this was a fast read. Autumn and Derek are mostly focused on surviving while they deal with every threat, the weather was a constant problem and it was all described with such realism that none of it seemed farfetched. They share one kiss, the rest of the time they are defending one another and working together to get out alive. Sherlock is just as involved in the story and they make a great trio.

Each of the books in this series involves a handler and a trained K-9 dog. The handler in this book is Autumn Mercer and the dog is Sherlock, an Australian Shepherd that is trained to search. Since Australian Shepherds are not very large dogs, they don't actually do much in terms of the actual rescue. They aren't attack dogs and they aren't Lassie.

Derek Peterson and his brother are on a hiking trip when one of them breaks a leg. This is actually a pretty common occurrence around here where people drive up from the city and hike the mountains in Nikes. Generally, several forest rangers go in, the person is packed up and moved to a location where they can be evacuated by ground or air. But, to keep up the theme of the series, Autumn is sent in with Sherlock only to find out that the injured brother has been kidnapped by mobsters. Instead of waiting for backup, Autumn, Sherlock and Derek make an attempt to rescue the injured brother as a storm cuts them off from help.

This would be a very short book if everyone made good decisions. Although Autumn is the trained law enforcement officer, she allows the paper-pushing desk jockey to make decisions (page 54) and goes along with them. But (page 98) doesn't seem to realize it. "But he seemed comfortable enough with his own masculinity to let her call the shots." As long as she doesn't actually call the shots.

The story moves right along and they have plenty of adventures but, if you are expecting any sort of realism, you've come to the wrong place. Finally, on page 179, when it's necessary for Derek to tear his shirt, Sherlock, with no prompting whatsoever, takes it upon himself to chew on it. Sure he did. Eyeroll.
