Maid for Murder #1

The Missing Maid

Rate this book
From the author of Maggie's Murder Mysteries and The Exciting Life of a Minor Character comes a new cosy mystery series!

When Clara arrives in the picturesque village of Greystone to work as a maid, things are about to get nasty. And not just because she’s decided to open the door to her past and pull off one more con.

This con is different, though. It’s personal. She just doesn’t realise how personal, yet.

Because she’s about to make friends, she’s about to care, and worst of all, she can’t stop thinking about that charming detective who seems both suspicious and drawn to her. This might become a mess she won't be able to clean up. But things get messier when someone ends up dead. Her street smarts come in handy, though, and she’s about to find out she’s maid for murder.

Does her mum really need a treatment of some kind, or is she just trying to keep her daughter hooked on the family business?

Wanting a New Start . . .

Clara wanted to start over, away from the con her mother chose for her. So she traveled to the village of Greystone accepting work as a maid. But her mother claims to need a costly medical procedure which only a high-priced con could pay for, bringing her back into that life. Is her mother manipulating her? Or does she truly need such a costly treatment for a real illness? If Clara goes back into that life, she can lose the new friends she was making, the villagers she cares about, and maybe even a relationship with the detective who may be showing interest in her.

But when someone is murdered, will the decision no longer be hers to make? Or will her own past skills be the only thing left to save her?

Clara (or so she goes by this name) is a maid on a mission who moves into a small town and becomes friends with the townspeople and local detective. Her first job is at the home of a rich bachelor and his fiance Pearl. The other maid that worked there goes missing and she helps the locals solve what happened to her.

A different kind of protagonist this time, and although at times you can't help but wonder - and worry - about her motivations, it won't take long before you grow to love Clara. She's perfectly imperfect and the story seems to be almost as much about her journey towards not needing to be alone in life as it is about a murder case. The characters are likeably and occasionally odd in a wonderful way, and I liked this book a lot!

Entertaining whodunit. Quirky and interesting characters to follow along on the story. There are some twists and turns and plenty of things to keep you guessing until the end. Good read.

This book was somewhere between a cosy mystery and a romance novel. Nice with humour, but not always very credible.
The ending is pretty abrupt, perhaps not a stand-alone novel?
Pleasant read though.

Clara McIntyre, con artiste extraordinaire, heartless, friendless, purely-business-only type of woman was in Greystone to pull off her last con, a biggie, that will pay ff all her mother's medical bills and finally end to her nefarious career. But she did not bargain for her maid colleague going missing and then turning up dead. And she certainly did not bargain on finding that she had a heart, one which was beginning to warm to the folks who lived in this quaint village.

This is the first of Silver's books that I have read. The blurb sounded fun and it certainly did not disappoint. The characters are quirky and lot of fun, enough to make me laugh out loud sometimes. The book is well written, heartfelt and empathic and I am certainly going to be on the look out for more from this author.
