The prologue already kick started my heart, what a way to start an incredible journey! This is not a simple tale with a simple plot with a few characters. This is a beautifully complex tale that expands throughout the realm, with multiple characters and from multiple POV's. But it's a plot and story that is so easy to follow, so easy to understand what's going on. Ok, maybe it does open up questions as to who and why young women are being taken against their will, what possible purpose does that serve. It most certainly kept me reading enthusiastically to find out!
Tiana, a healer, is abducted by whom and why, neither she nor those looking for her can say. Her disappearance uncovers another abduction, which might or might not be connected. And all this happens just as Tiana and the dashing Keelan start a fledgling admiration for one another. I love a strong female MC and Tiana is exactly that. She knows what she wants and goes out to get it. Even whilst being held captive, she doesn't just lie down and take it, she's resourceful and tough. So is another prominent character, Jess, a future queen, is being pushed into a marriage of convenience, more forced really. The main instigator is her mother, who puts politics way over the needs or wishes of her daughter. Yeah we all get that political marriages are a thing, but really lady? And what other plans does she have hidden up her sleeve? None that are good, that's for sure! At the tender age of 16, Jess will not be dictated to, she's obstinate, although not in an annoying way, all she wants is to be included in the choice process, it is her life after all. Keelan is tasked with getting behind Tiana's disappearance, which leads him to discover a much larger conspiracy, one of an imminent war and a reunion with his brother, a brother with a huge chip on his shoulder but a brother who's honourable. I'm enjoying both their characters and I'm looking forward to Declan's solo quest, to an island of magic, where he has none.
This is my first time reading this author, I was surprised when I suddenly got to the end of the book, I say suddenly because I hadn't realised a few hours had passed, nor did I realise I hadn't moved from my chair. That tell you something, doesn't it? Another favourite author? Oh yes! Definitely!
