I'll admit this story was a slow starter for me; there was a lot of groundwork to be laid. But once it took off it was an amazing adventure. Writing a Medieval time travel story must be tricky, but this author does a fine job weaving together the very old with the modern in every interaction that the H and h have, from their beliefs to their daily functions and even down to their speech. Not to mention getting the particulars of the magic just right, because if that didn't work there would be no story at all. I personally love a story in which there are forces beyond themselves that effect a couple's romance.
Here we have a heroine who is both fierce and fearful, and a Hero who is torn between being rational and taking a leap of faith. Their story sort of reminds me of a buddy movie, the way they can be at odds yet work so well together. Kayla is a thoroughly modern young woman of the 21st century. She's brave enough to keep her wits about her and face her fears, think on her feet and be a team player. She complements Michael and is a worthy match for him, but first she somehow has to earn his trust. Michael is Laird of Clan MacClellan and he has a lot on his plate. He's not only responsible for his clan, but there's a plot against him that he has to unravel. And when the time comes Kayla will play a vital part. Whoever orchestrated their match up had very good instincts.
A big bonus is the inclusion of Nicol and Eloise who we met in the prequel A Year Of Days. They play significant roles on two major occasions, and it was just good to see them again and continue their story. Had I realized they were in this book I would have re-read their novella first. You don't need to, but it could be fun to refresh your memory. (You can get their novella by signing up for the author's newsletter—link at the end of this book.) I'm hoping that all the characters in this series will thread their way through subsequent books. The end of this one hints that it could be the case.
This story picks up speed the further you get into it, culminates in a sensational climax, and finds a bittersweet and believable resolution. This is a series I look forward to reading more of. So far it promises to be a great addition to this author's body of work.

“It’s two-thousand and twenty-one.” She cleared her throat while he stared at her as if she’d spouted nonsense. “In the year of our Lord,” she added, hoping that lent credibility to the truth as she knew it.”
And Be My Love is among the best time travel romances I have read in a long time. Not least of which the reasons why because she has a family in “her time.” Not another husband - because I find that offensive. (No offense to fans of That Book, but y’all? That’s cheating.)
Kayla and Michael are an unlikely pairing. How does he believe she’s from the future? And how does she believe she’s stuck in the past? But they do each have a factual touchstone. He survived being prone in the woods for, what to him, is three years. And she found him completely buried, but still alive. Neither can deny the truth of these bizarre facts. So they start from there.
“Good Lord. I am lost in time, trapped in some heathen century with a bunch of strangers, one bigger and meaner than the next, and I’m wasting all my anxiety on him!” — I’ve never understood the insistence on “the next.” It should be “the last.” Because if it’s the next, then they are progressively getting less mean. Not more mean. Just saying.
It makes sense that she has a family. It’s an obvious plot choice. Because the tension is then real.
“She spent a few minutes wrapped in horror over her family and what they must be going through. But how awful, if she died now, that they would have no idea of this implausible, irrational, so impossibly unbelievable thing that had happened to her.”
Stay or leave? Try to go, and live with leaving? Or live with accepting him as second choice? It’s a tantalizing decision point and really well written.
“Chapter Fourteen — And I Will Make Thee Beds of Roses” — I loved the use of Christopher Marlowe’s poem, The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, throughout.
Thank the author for this: “She handed him the brush when she was done, but he’d only shaken his head at it. He didn’t really need it. Even tousled and probably dirty, his black hair curled gorgeously, with one Superman curl dangling over his forehead.” Because that’s how I’d been picturing Michael.
Actually, this entire story was very easy to picture. Apologies for the length of this quote but it illustrates perfectly what I mean…
““Be wise,” Michael said in a low voice next to her, “and be safe.”
His idea of a pep talk, she supposed, and gave a bittersweet smile. She turned and looked at him one more time. She would never know a man as beautiful as him. Possibly, no one on earth had eyes as black and captivating as his. So much of his mood or emotions were gathered right there in his gaze, always. She’d never known another like that, whose eyes blazed as if they had a will and life of their own, with so much storminess or intensity, smoldering with desire, or shifting with disbelief, narrowing with scorn, shuttering when he kissed her, and sometimes burning with his righteous fury.
“I think... I would have loved you if you if we’d been given that time,” she felt compelled to tell him.
His response was neither bittersweet nor particularly heartfelt. He nodded once, staring straight ahead, looking at the worn brown wood of the door in front of them.
After a moment, he turned to her and winked, nearly stopping her heart for the crazy beauty of that tiny gesture.
“There is time yet, lass.”
Big heartfelt sigh.
Only one error… “…settled enough that Kayla could here herself think and hear her own heart thud with horror.” — hear herself
Loved this one. Heartily recommend.

Kayla need to close her mouth and ass cuz the only thing that is coming out of her I bullshit
The only reason I’m giving this 2 stars and not 1, is because there’s is very real concerns represented in this book. And I like Muireall.
But Kayla is also just purely annoying, from Literally using Michael for her own pleasure, to being mad at him, to then being like “ohhh come conquer my castle” ….😀 girl what.
If I had read this as the first book of Rebecca’s book, I would simply not continue, but thank god her books can be read as standalones

Michael and Kayla's story is lovely but more fraught with disbelief than that of Nicol and Eloise. Despite his own brush with the faeries, Michael is skeptical of Kayla being from the future. If anyone should believe her, it is him. Nevertheless, the tension between the two centres around the angst of staying and never seeing her family again, or leaving, if she can. There is treachery, deceit, betrayal and greed to give this tale some suspense, and a comeuppance to the bad guy.
I liked that Eloise and Nicol appeared in the story and that the next in the series starts at the end of this one.

Haha..A Mike Drop Ending
Making a time travel story believable is difficult to accomplish. This writer accomplished it in some ways others don’t. First, unlike many other stories, the Highlander laird and his family believe she is a witch which is a more likely and believable scenario when a Middle Age Era man finds a 21st century lass dropped into his company. Secondly I like the attention given to simple things like how do these people accomplish the necessary hygiene we take for granted using toilet paper? I enjoy accurate details of daily life in earlier periods, they grab my attention and curiosity so I appreciated the fact that there were no “kilts and sporrans” since they hadn’t been invented yet; even though clan tartans weren’t in use yet, there may have been a semblance of plaides so I’m ok with that.
Thankfully there is a profusion of statements and thoughts where Michael, the Scottish laird, does not know what Kayla is talking about when she mentions 21st century words BUT it made my teeth hurt, like nails on a chalkboard does, when he says a few phrases that are modern such as when they are in bed and he says “Come with me, Kayla”..err..I don’t think he would even think that let alone phrase it that way. So a star off for that.
I thought it quite ingenious as to how Kayla makes use of some simple survival tools her step-dad insisted she put in her backpack though it was highly unlikely the enemy would not have taken it from her…but it allowed a very creative plot twist. The ending mike drop moment made me laugh out loud. Can’t wait to read the next book to see what happens.

Time travel romance follows a fairly predictable formula. Those of us that enjoy this genre are a fairly forgiving bunch but we do require a romantic lead character. He might be a gruff alpha hole but one thing is a must he has to show some amount of depth. For this MLC to act like he doesn't want his time traveling FLC to leave (after only 2weeks) He should have given her more than a passing interest and possibly more than a few hours of scattered hours.
He witnesses how the other people in the keep much less his generally grumpy and disdainful family treat her and still can't understand why she wants to go back.
This writer is also focused on pages of how good looking the MLC is but leaves the storyline flat and uninteresting. For all the hype that was on Amazon about this series it fell woefully flat.

A Must Read Author
I have read everything Ms. Ruger has written to date and would say that wherever you start reading her collection you will be treating yourself to wonderful in depth characters, descriptions of places & times that are so real you will feel you have been transported from page one of any book you start to read. !!!

What a unique start to a time travel story! I really enjoyed the characters and the magical situation that brought Michael and Kayla together. Suspense and turmoil mixed with clan “issues” made for an entertaining read.

Here's the thing. The prologue was great. The writing is captivating, and the storyline is quite interesting. However, I could not stand behind the characters' actions.
Hypothetically speaking, if I were to say, stumble across a half-naked man buried in the woods—one who pointed a sharp sword at me and stared spouting gibberish—I would not follow him through the forest thinking he was going to help me! Kayla does exactly this. Also, after saving his ass on more than one occasion, Michael then locks Kayla in a dungeon as soon as he takes her home! Never mind that poor Kayla was already in a vulnerable position, injured (did anybody help her?) and scared out of her wits. So what does Micheal do? He puts her in the dungeon AFTER SHE PASSES OUT!
Then, then, there is Eloise. No, I did not read her book, and I don't intend to. So it turns out that Eloise is a time-traveller/missing person that Kayla was searching for at the beginning of the book. I am sorry, but Eloise was a terrible character. She had no empathy. No compassion. Instead of offering to help Kayla, she finds it amusing how Micheal looks at Kayla like he wants to see her naked and leaves Kayla to it. All because her living situation is too small now that she is pregnant. Umm, what?
Forgive me if it sounds like I am ranting, but nothing the characters did made sense! Even Kayla. After being locked in a dungeon for days, she then wants Michael to kiss her hours after her release, all because he's hot. Yeah, sorry, I can't stand behind this.

I loved the romance between Kayla and Michael but there were a few things in this book that didn't work for me, and that's why I'm not rating it with more than four stars:
I started purposefully with book one in this series to make sure I understood the full story (because I have read one subsequent book and felt a bit lost), but I still felt like I was missing something, as there is another woman that has previously traveled in time, something on which we are given very little detail
I didn't care very much for the beginning of the plot. It was confusing and weird, to say the least. Especially because the reason for Michael's male version of sleeping beauty is never fully explained. If someone wanted him out of the picture, it would have been much easier (and probably more historically accurate) to just kill him...
Some of the dialogues feel distinctly modern, even discounting the fact that sometimes you have two women from the future involved
Other than the above, if you love time travel and historical romances, And Be My Love is still a lovely book to read, and I definitely want to go through the remaining books in the series.

Ok so when I first started this I hated it. So I turned it off and decided to try again another day. Well if I had waited like 10 more minutes I would have finished this book so much quicker. It actually ended up being one that I could not wait to get back in the car to listen some more.
The beginning has some aspects of The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and I love anything that has that overlapped timeline feel. So once the book started laying that groundwork I was hooked.
My biggest qualm though ended up being the epilogue. I hate when the epilogue is the introduction of the next story’s main character. I could’ve gone without knowing that because I’m not huge on series anyway.
Overall a really good book which surprised me considering it looks like one your grandma buys at the Dollar General.

The premise sounded good. It looked like a great series. I happily started in only to be disappointed. A good editor was needed. The writing style is over-wordy the descriptions unnecessarily long and overall narrative sleep inducing. There are pages and pages of descriptjons of abilities, emotions, feelings, thoughts.. with hardly a word or two of dialogue. A good writer will tell a story, and from the actions and words of the characters allow readers to come to their own conclusions as to their thoughts, feelings and motives. The grammar is clunky and many sentences sound so odd it takes one out if the story.
I do not understand the high ratings. I couldn't make it past the prologue.

time-travel Outlander style. this was a mildly fun time.
when the witch thought them made for each other even 700 years apart, it should be cataclysmic. but it was meh, the yearning is lacking and the dialogue is average.
and i really really dont understand her choice to stay there. in the 13th century. no plumbing, low hygiene, low quality of life, and leaving behind her family. she has a loving family, mind you, not a crappy broken one. imagine the loss she caused. not to mention the power imbalance between the mmc and fmc, she rlly has no power there (plus being a woman in that time period) and he holds all the power (literally a laird). she’s isolated in terms of language, knowledge, etc. she’s utterly dependent on a man (which is a very scary thing).
