Eight-year-old Kate loves her school, particularly because it focuses on teaching magic, and her two best friends attend along with her. Even though they are not in the same class, Kate is determined to make the most of what the school year has to offer. Kate’s teacher specializes in potions, so she finds herself crafting myriad concoctions that do anything from letting her speak to animals to bouncing around the classroom. Unfortunately, Kate is a picky eater and is not willing to taste the potions she makes, which prevents her from experiencing the fun her friends share. But, when one potion is too enticing to resist, Kate faces her fears and discovers that sometimes things taste better than she expects. This delightful beginner chapter book is a charming story for fans of tales that feature magic and friendship. Short chapters include frequent black and white illustrations and sufficient white space to give newer readers a visual respite while helping the story move forward with ease. Ample repetition of words and phrases gives readers the confidence they need to become comfortable with new vocabulary while advancing through the story, as well. Fans of Sofia the First and similar storytelling styles will appreciate the approach of this story as Kate resists trying new things and ultimately finds that her hesitations are often unfounded. At the end of the book, readers will find a list of A.M. Luzzader's other books for young people. One of a series of adventures, this story is one that can be read in any order, and readers will love learning about Kate and her friends while simultaneously improving their own reading skills. This is a lovely addition to library collections for newly independent readers to share on their own or with caregivers.
