Years have passed our original (Deadly) class are now aged 24! Saya needs help detoxing and another original class member may need some help, enter the world's most deadly assassin Marcus! But does Marcus still get depression and what does he really want from life? Nearly everything that made this series a phenom is gone - the 1980s setting (it's now 200s); the music and bands references and convos; the teenage angst and need to find themselves; what's left? The great characters, thought provoking dialogue, cool art and mostly.. the violence.

And although this will get my lowest rating of the series, a 7.5 out of 12, Three Stars, there's still something very special about this series and reality that this time-jump still manages to bring with it. One more volume to go, and boy, has it been an amazing ride.

Brandy is now running for Senate, while Marcus has become a renowned professional assassin and is now working for Kenji, who hired him to clean up his sister and get her motivated, then kill her while she’s hopeful of getting revenge. So Marcus detoxes her, they reconcile and admit their love for each other, have sex, and go through various plans on how to kill Kenji. They execute their plan and kill all of Kenji's men, then Marcus tells Saya he was hired by Kenji, and gives her a choice between forgoing revenge and living a normal life with him, or killing her brother to take over the Kuroki, and become everything she hates. She chooses the later.

Marcus, now “The World's Greatest Assassin,” gets a job to kill a Mexican cartel warlord, which he does, but is having trouble escaping the aftermath of the assassination from the warlord's numerous men, when Maria shows up and reveals that she hired him to kill the warlord, who was her husband. Marcus tells her he knew all along that she had married the warlord so she could take over his empire, and took the job anyway. Her plan to take over after the warlord's death doesn’t work out, so they both fight and escape together, rekindling their love. Back in a relationship with Maria, Marcus quits assignation and gets a job as a writer for a newspaper company, and Maria works as a nanny, taking care of the children of rich people.

They’re both happy together with their middle-class life until Maria develops an untreatable autoimmune disease that will eventually leave her crippled. Marcus is willing to go back to assassination to get money to help her, but she convinces him that they must never return to that life. Marcus proposes to Maria and they get married in Vegas and invite Toshawi, Zenzel, and Helmut to the wedding. We see Stephen, now also leading a normal life with a new lover, and going through pictures of Marcus’s wedding, wishing he had attended it. Then a shadowy figure resembling Shabnam breaks into their house, kills Stephen’s lover, and then kills Stephen also, before going over to look at the pictures of Maria and Marcus’s wedding.

Damn! This is the first time I’ve read a book where I feel like the ending might just be executed far better than the beginning was. Not to throw dirt on the first few volumes or anything; I enjoyed them a lot, but these last few volumes have been completely bonkers. Hope Remender sticks the landing with the final one.

After a couple of lesser arcs, this book is back with a bang. This was one of the better volumes in this entire series. I am really excited about seeing where this goes...

After what feels like forever, Deadly Class is back again. It definitely feels like the book has changed a lot in the interim - the story jumps forward years at a time, re-establishing itself every issue or so, while the inevitable journey of Marcus, Saya, and Maria barrels towards its ending.

I'm not sure I like what's happening. It feels like a big departure from the previous arcs, and Marcus' constant cynicism has become extremely grating. But with only a few issues left, I want to see how it all turns out, even if I think I can already tell - spoiler alert, it's not going to be happy.

3.5🌟

I like what the creative team is doing here. I just don't know if this volume was even necessary. Overall this series should probably have been wrapped up in volume 9. I'd probably consider this as more of a mini series or part 2 of the story. Either way we get more of what the series is known for. Fantastic sequential action scenes that are frantic as all hell. Complex relationships that have highs and lows. And my favourite the voice of Markus rhetoric and views of society.

On review but for the whole series:

While I knew the name, I didn't pick up Deadly Class until I fell on these specific editions. These covers by Wes Craig were just mind-blowing to me and stopped me in my tracks. And to say that I fell in love with this series is an understatement. The 80s representation like you're there, the mental health discussions nobody wants to have but you're being faced with (especially Marcus' stood out for me with countless moments that literally made me stop reading in a "oh wow" moment).

And there are no heroes to this story, everybody is flawed, you often question whether you like a character or not and always find yourself in a sweet middle. The art has just become my favorite, following to a point the emotions and state of mind of its characters. It's beautifully dark and rough but also a long lasting quest for love, a chase to simply belong and find your people. I believe there's a piece of all of us in Deadly Class that none of us expect to find there.

I own this book.

Up until this point, I felt that the series had lulled. It reached the classic point of a series that are longer than 6 books where things just level out to the expected but this book blew that out of the water. I found myself immediately back into this series, we're beginning to wind up to what will only be an epic ending no doubt. I think the annoying aspects of the character's personalities ( cough Marcus) levelled out in this book and for the first time, I find myself hopeful for a somewhat happy ending for these characters. Fingers crossed.

Before Sunset if Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were trained assassins. Maybe it would be called……. Before GUNset?!?!?
This epilogue is beautiful and exactly what I wanted from this series. Only one volume left to go.

Who knew getting into a adult side of things, marriage, health issues, and just general being poor could make myself relate to this arc the most.

Marcus goes through the headache of saving Saya again. Even though this is a doomed relationship, the boy just never learns even as an adult. This adventure has crazy fun fight scenes but then we get to the best part of this entire volume. Young adulthood-being broke, and trying to survive. It's nice to see Marcus and "Spoiler" together and watching him grow in interesting ways. I also loved the ending to this volume and a shocking death really amps up the ending for me.

Overall I REALLY enjoyed this volume and can't wait for the final volume to come out. A 4.5 out of 5.

So there you have it. Another very good series done and dusted. One less title in the 'to be read' pile. One less very good series I haven't read, has now been read. And how was it? It was alright.
Volume three wasn't as good as one or two. Volume four is probably better than three, but still nowhere near as good as volume one and two. It was all going along rather smoothly until we hit the final couple of issues, and Mr. Remender felt the need to shift from dishing out his dime store philosophy (mostly about music and underground culture in the previous millennium) and give us a steaming big helping of all the shit nobody wants in their comics in 2023. Granted, the internal monologue (whining) of the major character, which certainly seems to be Remender's self-insert did grate a little at times, though was mostly harmless when eschewing on what was punk and what wasn't. It sticks out like a sore thumb when all of a sudden it's no longer the 1980's and it's climate change and covid. A sore thumb that was dusted with cayenne pepper and shoved where the sun don't shine.
Seriously, it was all going so well, and then within a couple of pages and a few dialogue boxes, it all went south very, very quickly. That, and the final resolution seemed rushed, unearned and unappealing. I won't spoil it obviously, but nothing in the last two issues, save a few pages here or there, in anyway did justice to the greatness, or at least the very goodness that came before it. And the meta commentary on changing the ending was so obvious (probably intentionally so), but did little if anything to wash the taste of bland and disappointment from my mouth. It really was going pretty darn well up until this point.
So did the ending break the series? Well... no, not really. It certainly tarnished it a bit, however. The flat and frustrating conclusion aside, this was still a very good series. Wes Craig's artwork throughout was mostly stellar, with some of the best modern colouration I've seen in a comic book this millennium. If Remender could have reigned in his distemper for the modern world long enough to end the book without any histrionics, it certainly wouldn't sting quite as much as it does right now. Oh well... So close. 4.25/5

Maybe it's me getting older, but Marcus' 'wakeup call' realization got to me. Life isn't a guarantee. There's a time limit that some of us will hit MUCH sooner than others. Instead of worrying about your place in it, ENJOY it. LIVE it like it's something you'll never see again.

It's hard to explain to 'the young ones'. There's an invincibility of youth, that the older shed at some point.

In conclusion (lol), Marcus is a shit character that is annoying as all hell. His relationships are always toxic and unhealthy. Aging him up and having him realize that he's wasted enough time will always resonate with the older readers. It washes away some of the sameness the character has been showing since the start.

Loving it (even if the middle parts slowed down at points)
---------------
Bonus: From being a cog in the machine to later realizing that too much time was spent IN it...
Bonus Bonus: Not everything from their past was bad (or good) but someone is coming...

3 1/2 stars. I think I’m starting to get a little burned out following Marcus, Saya and Maria all the time. What makes this series so good is the huge cast of characters we follow, in and out of Kings Dominion. I know a lot of what’s happening is just a natural and realistic progression of the story, and it all makes sense, but Remender’s focus has changed quite a bit from where the series started and it’s not what I expected from these last few volumes. It’s almost entirely character driven at this point, superb character work, no doubt, and the art continues to be great, but I’m itching for more of what it started out to be. I completely understand why he’s turning things in the direction he is now, it’s just not my favorite. I do hope the final volume ends with a bang.

Nooo! I can’t believe Stephen is dead! Boo.

It was really nice to see the characters’ storylines starting to wrap up. I’m glad Marcus and Maria ended up married and it was cool to see the old group reunite in Las Vegas.

I like how this comic shows that the deaths of earlier characters still haunt a lot of the main characters.

“All I know is, it’s dark without you. I close the blinds, you open them and let the light in. You’re my home.”

It’s been almost a decade since I first started reading Deadly Class, and I finally got my ship in all of its glory, and it’s for forever this time. I know everyone thought Marcus and Saya would end up together. In the very beginning, I was rooting for them too. But there was just something about Marcus and Maria that made sense. And I wound up loving them. They had a long, rough journey in their relationship, but they found their way back to each other. In between all of the fighting and killing and teen angst they found real love in one another. I mean, adult problems suck ass too. It’s kinda funny how this grew up with me because I’m also struggling with surviving and worrying about rent, groceries, and my health. They were relatable when they were teens (minus the killing) and they’re relatable now as adults trying to make ends meet.

Still, I’m so happy my babies made it.

Which is exactly why I am going to be supremely pissed if Remender kills either one of them, or both of them. THEY DESERVE TO BE FUCKING HAPPY!! LET THEM BE HAPPY OK???

Here’s another long ass quote I can’t resist putting in.

“No matter how much they hurt each other that love remains. Even after finding her with another man he couldn’t bring himself to hurt her. But you knew that. Just as I knew that no matter how much came between them… in the end they would be together.”

As we see the book jump years ahead per issue, we see Marcus staying the same at his core, but growing outwardly as an adult.

First, Marcus tries to help Saya in more ways than one. First, he helps her kick her heroin habit. Then, he helps plan and execute the attack on her brother. Then, he tries to give her a choice, walk away or revenge. The choice he gives her is noble in a way, but he reveals that it's also selfish. He wants someone to walk away with him. Hoping it will be Saya, he goes through the trouble of helping her in all these ways, only to be disappointed in the end.

Which leads him back to Maria. And their relationship is much more... natural. Which is strange because there is definitely betrayal there... but once Marcus is able to move past that, you see how loving and caring their relationship can be to each other. They seem desolate and hopeful, as her health deteriorates, and Marcus' love grows. It was really interesting seeing how they grew together, and faced the one foe that cant be defeated - life.

This was action packed, but more than that - it was heartfelt. I'm hoping Rick Remender can nail the landing with the next and final volume.

Again, this series has always been of major interest and is so unlike anything I have read in graphic novels. It is a saga in the true sense of the word. From volume 1 through this one, it is a story of growing up in a harsh world, an assassin's world, finding friends, losing friends, trusting, then losing that trust. Loving and loss.

It isn't an easy read by any stretch of one's imagination, but Remender, lone of my favorite writers, tells stories that weave and bend and twist and twirl. The art is bloody and emotionally drawn and fits so well with what is happening. When the final volume is complete, it might be time to read them all in one sitting (Well as many days as it will take to read it) because after time and many books inbetween sometimes the intent is hidden in backstory that may have slipped past me months later.

So good though.

I thoroughly enjoyed the penultimate volume of Deadly Class. This volume was filled with action and emotion that this series is known for. The overall plot, dialogue, and art in this volume was great. I am looking forward to reading "A Fond Farwell, Part Two. Volume Eleven is one of the more enjoyable volumes of Deadly Class.

A solid 4/5.

After the previous volume's abrupt pacing and past-to-future-to-past forwarding, this one picked up and felt much better. 2 chapters are with Saya, and the other 2 are with Maria, which I again liked because it both provided a balance and also some loose ends are no more.

The only thing I did not like is the end of the volume: That black siluette is probably Shabnam, and I really do not wanna see that fat F again in the finale volume and presumably in the final boss position. What the flark is that? Why? Not to mention he killed that glasses dude (forgot the name) after he spared that fatty in Volume 9. I do not like that kind of waste.

One thing I’ve always loved about Deadly Class is that it makes me sad in a good way. This volume definitely made me sad, but it was almost more regretful.

I appreciate knowing that any character could die at anytime. And I love seeing these characters almost 20 years later, but the realism of it, while beautiful, is also hard to read.

All that ti say, Remender built this up perfectly & succeeded in everything he intended to do. As I enter into the beginning of the end, I truly have no idea what could happen.

And Wes Craig is still brilliant. The little process sections in the back of the book are so interesting to look through!

The penultimate volume of Deadly Class is sad as the story really does come full circle. Time has moved on and the kids are no longer at King's Dominion but that doesn't mean their lives are any less insane. This volume shows Marcus' new life and how a few actions change everything. Remender puts this kid through the ringer again. I really enjoyed how this felt like it was written in the early 00s. While I understand that Marcus is the focus, I would have liked more updates from the more of the class. Wes Craig did some spectacular work again. Overall, its been a wild ride and I can't wait to see how it ends.

When the 90s and 2000s arcs started, I was a little skeptical, but I love where they took the story. Marcus and Saya's relationship finally gets as close to closure as possible, and Marcus' definitely learns the hard way about his life of violence. Maria and Marcus' relationship, whenever they finally do get back together, is beautiful and the most down to earth. They finally get to live in peace, or as close to peace as being poor can get you, away from the violence. The ending was so sweet! It's a surprising change of pace compared to the rest of the run.

Hmm… I was under the impression that volume 11 was going to be the end of the story… but apparently it is not. There will still be several more issues of the comic before it ends.

This was certainly an interesting issue and had several important moments. I’m looking forward to when it is finally over, as it seems to be dragging out a bit, but overall it is still interesting to some degree. It’s interesting how things are at this point with everyone getting older…

Another cliffhanger ending… and I have my suspicions, but, now we’ll see how this all plays out.

Given how concentrated this series started out in both time and place, I never thought I'd see beyond either, and yet here we are well in the future in several time skips, just following around the assassin school not-exactly grads in the big, bleak real world of adulthood. Alas!

(It at times feels specter-like, seeing as how the radical climax I expected all along happened briefly in a flashback instead, so this has somewhat of an epilogue nature I can't shake. I'm pretty curious to see how the final showdown comes together — or what it even is in the end.)
