Time to Love a Highlander #1

Loving Her Highland Thief

Rate this book
Stay? Lose all she’s ever known. Go? Lose the love of a lifetime.

As a struggling, 21st century farmer, Kenzie MacMartin knows if she doesn’t recover that registered ram that cost her a bundle, her dog won’t be the only one howling in the Highlands. And to make matters worse, when she chases that fool sheep through a cave, she discovers a troupe of trespassing re-enactors mucking up her land with some kind of clan skirmish complete with realistic weapons, monstrous warhorses, and a restless herd of Highland cows. The only upside is their strikingly handsome leader—until he kidnaps her.

Mathias Stronach questions his sanity in laying claim to the strangely dressed woman and her vicious wee dog. Perhaps he should have let the MacPhersons take her prisoner. Then, she would’ve distracted them instead of him. Such daring and fire in this feisty lass. He’d bet his best dagger; her passions burn just as fiercely. And that fine round backside of hers nestled between his thighs as they ride. Makes a man think twice about choices he’s made. Like promising to marry a woman he’s never loved so he can be the next chieftain of Clan Stronach.

When Kenzie realizes she’s barged into the thirteenth century, her priority is getting back to that cave and hoping if she retraces her steps, she’ll find her way back home. But vengeful clans, a medieval sociopath, and the mesmerizing warrior who draws her in like a bee to sweet clover thwarts that priority at every turn. Her head knows better. Her heart refuses to listen.

She misses her family, is worried about her farm, and would kill for coffee and a toothbrush. But those aren’t the worst things about traveling back several centuries. The worst thing is loving a man who, once she returns to her time, will have been dead for over eight hundred years.

This is a lighthearted and fun time-travel romance. I enjoyed it but there were two things that bothered me and I had to subtract 2-stars for that:

Last, I added a point back for the gorgeous cover :)

I really wanted to like this book, but it just left me feeling underwhelmed. I probably would not have finished reading it if I did not receive an ARC. However, I am still glad I read it to the end.

It’s a cute story, and I actually really like starting in modern time and going back in time. However, I just couldn’t get past the dreaded “insta love.” There was too much Stockholm Syndrome and not enough development between the characters.

Also… I hate to say, my feminism got the best of me with this book. Normally this is never an issue when reading romance, because let’s face it, that is what we are here for. But, I had a hard time turning my brain off when she decided not to go back home… AT ALL! No goodbye to her family or anything. I would have liked to see more compromise. Could he not have come and gotten her back? She could have gone home, realized she wanted to go back and stay, OR HE COULD HAVE GONE TO HER TIME?!?!

Lastly, my modern brain could not get past the whole childbirth thing. I had a 10 lb 7oz baby that was butt down… so I am a bit appreciative of modern medicine and c-sections. But, really… another reason to go back to her time.

All in all, it was ok. Mostly, it was my brain getting in the way of a fun story.

💋💋

I really enjoyed the first book in this new series.
It was extremely well written, but that’s not a Surprise coming from the pen of Maeve Grayson.

The characters are wonderful and entertaining, and I adore the animals incorporated into their owners lives so much, each with their own personalities and tricks.

Mathias, Kenzie, Annag and Lilias are all good characters with larger than life personalities and problems.
Their lives are about to be turned upside down by a run away sheep.
Wether in the end it’s for better or worse?
I’ll let them tell you their story.

Five stars for sure.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Time travel....oh, wouldn't that be quite the adventure?!! My thanks to Maeve Greyson for writing such a wonderful and heartwarming story for us to read. I enjoyed everything about Kenzie and Mathias' story and loved the animals who were such an important part of it as well.

When Kenzie finds herself back in time, in the thirteenth century, it's a good thing she's stubborn and feisty because it will take everything she has to stay alive amidst the warring clans and some backstabbing warriors. Thank goodness for Mathias, he becomes her savior and soulmate but he is not free to make promises. My heart ached for both of them! I loved the ending, really made me smile:)

Maeve Greyson is an author who never disappoints me, every book I've read of hers has been absolutely delightful.

What's not to love about a 21st-century farmer and a 13th-century warrior in a time travel romance? At least Kenzie MacMartin has her history books to fall back on, but Mathias is thoroughly confused by the woman in strange clothing and peculiar speech. Kenzie thought her day was going badly when she had to chase the recalcitrant Ramsay down with her sheepdog Brodie, but emerging from a tunnel in a cave and finding herself in the middle of a battle, did not factor into the equation. Whilst Kenzie's main concern is getting back to her farm and her family, Mathias is more concerned about keeping the feisty woman safe. The attraction between them is real, but how can they possibly follow their hearts when there are so many hurdles to jump. I found this novel romantic and entertaining and loved the inclusion of the stubborn ram and the loyal Brodie. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Every girl's dream comes true (ok maybe not every girl but I would like to travel back!) when Kenzie ends up in medieval Scotland in the middle of a battle! Coming from the 21st century has her a little scattered at first until she figures it out. Luckily she sheepdog and the sheep they were chasing come through with her.

Mathias, a highlander, protects her and takes her back to his keep. Let the adventure begin!!
A strong attraction, entertaining characters, including the animals, secrets and of course a little culture shock bring this story full circle.

Will she stay or go back home? An entertaining, fun story that will leave you only wanting more!

I liked this historical time travel romance. It was just what I needed to read in an afternoon. It had the right amount of suspense and romance. As it was my first read from Maeve, I look forward to more from her.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A very enjoyable series starter, The pace is very good, the characters have depth, the good guys are lovely & the bad are horrid. I loved the feisty Kenzie who coped so well with travelling back eight hundred years, I also loved Mathias who was honourable & determined to keep not only Kenzie safe but Brodie & Ramsey too. Their attraction was instantaneous but there were lots of hurdles for them to overcome & there were a few surprises on their journey. A lovely read but I would have thought Kenzie would have wanted to say goodbye to her father & brothers
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This is the story of how Kenzie suddenly was transported back into the 13th century. She was just trying to catch a naughty sheep. She along with her dog and sheep got caught by Mathias and brought to the Stronach clan.

So on this time period, people who are just 'a bit different' is in danger of being branded as a witch or a spy. Kenzie was very vocal about her thoughts and often land her on difficult situations. At the start, I really did not like Kenzie. I feel like she is impulsive. Like she seems to want to die so much she can't keep her mouth shut.

To be fair, I like that she can decently defend herself. I like that she cares a lot about her pets. A few of her decisions I don't approve of but that's her life, lol.😅

Mathias is your typical guy on the 13th century. Very assertive and a bit of a male chauvinist which I guess is typical on books set on this time period.

The romance was too sudden on my opinion, it seems like they were exchanging 'I love you-s'after a few days(?) of knowing each other.

There are a few things I did not like on the plot, for example the conclusion. I wish Kenzie chose differently.

Though I have a few issues on the book, I still enjoyed reading this one. It was a quick read on the latter part.👍

Author Maeve Greyson has created a fun Medieval Highlander Time Travel story that ends with a HEA. I enjoyed this book however it is not one of this authors best stories, I much preferred her Highland Heroes series beginning with book one The Guardian and her Highland Hearts Series beginning with My Highland Lover — I just feel like those books / series were more emotional.

The MC in this story are Kenzie MacMartin (from 2019) and Mathias Stronach (from 1203) and as with all time travel tales Kenzie does not adapt well at first when she realizes she has been hurled back to the medieval era. The romance between these two was pretty limited as they went from Kenzie fighting to return to her time to all of a sudden declaring she loves Mathias and staying with him. There are other sub-plots woven into the story that I am sure future books will fully explore. I just wish this book was meatier as I felt like a lot was skipped or skimmed over.

I will still be looking forward to the next book of the series!

I really wanted to like this but it has so many issues that it makes it impossible for me.

Spoilers ahead.

First of all, Ole Girl has traveled back in time some 900 years (don't quote me but it's close). There's no way that these two characters are going to instantly understand each other. As in, no difficulty at all. Maybe a few words the hero doesn't understand the connotation of, but that would be it.

Why the author felt the need to make her dog and her sheep such a large portion of the story is beyond me. It felt silly and it added nothing to the story.

The heroine just decides at one point she is going to stay. No running home and saying goodbye to family, or picking up supplies or medicines...just gone. I thought that was incredibly cruel to her family, not knowing what happened to her.

AND....there's just too many similarities to another, much more famous time travel romance, for my taste. There were a few scenes and a few conversations that felt so similar to me that it felt uncomfortable.

I'm the first to defend an author's right to write her story any way she wants to. It's her art. But there's a difference between artistry and craftsmanship, and something went very wrong with the craftsmanship of this story.

This is an example of pantster writing gone wrong. I liked the first few chapters but as the story progressed it didn't seem like the author had plotted out a story at all... just let it wander around and she would course correct when necessary to serve the story. Didn't even rewrite the parts that didn't fit anymore. Characters would just change their stripes on a dime without explanation in order to make the story work.

(SPOILERS in the next paragraph)

Case in point—Lilias suddenly announces that she's not as 'daft' as she has pretended to be FOR THE LAST TWENTY YEARS! Say what? Why would she do that? We don't know, but now she needs to be smarter so... now she is. Another example, Annag pretended to be a bent over decrepit old hag for FIFTEEN YEARS when she was perfectly spry! Why would she do that? Again, we don't know but she could never escape if she can't at least walk so... now she can. Problem solved. Mathias, who had always been so dedicated to the well-being of his clan, suddenly hands the chieftainship over to a naïve young woman who is uninterested and unequipped to deal with the still volatile politics within the community. Why? Because he wants to go off and become a sheep farmer with Kenzie. *eye roll* Ironically he could now be the chief and still be with Kenzie, but he doesn't really care about the clan anymore. They can fend for themselves he now says. Might as well mention this pet peeve of mine too—Scots in 2019 don't speak the way Kenzie speaks—her language sounded more like old English than present day English. The inconsistencies in this story are numerous but why bother listing any more of them. You get my point.

(END SPOILERS)

I've read other books by this author that I have enjoyed so I don't know what went wrong with this book but I know the author is better than this. This is really a poor start to the series and it's just very unfortunate.

This series has a serious case of instalove which is a huge no for me, so I tried not to take this one as seriously as book two, which I read back in November. I hated Taming Her Highland Legend These books also work as standalones so you don't necessarily have to read them in order. I liked Loving Her Highland Thief so much more than the second one, leaps and bounds more. There were still parts that I didn't like about this one, but much more enjoyable.

I do enjoy that this series is about Scottish women time traveling instead of Americans who come over on holidays. It honestly makes much more sense, as they would know the culture, be more familiar with the historical events, and wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb every time they opened their mouth.

One thing I didn't like is that she never goes back to tell her father or brothers that she's alive. There was also multiple times where Brodie the Border Collie is kicked and I thought he was dead. I would have put the book down right there and wouldn't have read another book in this series. I feel like she gave everything up, she didn't even really try to go home.

I wished Greyson had made these more slow burn and spanned over a longer period of time. This would have been an easy four star read if she had done those two things.

3/5 stars

2/2/23

tell me why I downloaded the rest of the series on my kindle when i read book two back in November and gave it two stars🤔 not me giving Scottish time travel romances a second chance

The Highlands, time travel, and romance, what is there not to like!

This book definitely gave me Outlander vibes. Kenzie chases her ram through a cave in 2019 and ends up in 1203. Then enter Mathias battling against another clan. The rest is history.

While the romance part is obvious, I actually really enjoyed the animal sidekicks, Brodie and Ramsey. They always seemed to add complications or aid at the right times. The best part that lightened up this book a bit is the modern sayings that Kenzie kept letting slip out confusing those in 1203.

The only part about this book I had wished was a bit different was a slower pace to the romance. A little extra teasing in the middle might have help in latching on to that part of the book more.

This book was enjoyable and had the right amount of suspense and fun to keep me interested in reading more!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a digital copy of this ARC for my honest review.

Loving Her Highland Thief by Maeve Grayson is a new book in as series, Tome to Love a Highlander, which promises to be more time travel, as was this one. Kenzie MacMartin was chasing her very expensive ram into a cave when she felt odd, an odd trembling: must be vapors. When she came out the other side, she found a group of re-enactors; re-enactors who did not have permission to be on her property. Her dog, Brodie, was having none of it as well. She started taking names. She would be reporting this and pressing charges. It all of a sudden, dawned on her that something was not right and she asked Her "captor" what year it was. With his reply of 1203, she nearly lost it. The finest of this group, Mathias, had taken charge of her and was protecting her from other who may have been less honorable. Within several days they were back at the keep and then things really started happening. It turns out the internal politics of 1203 are every bit as complicated as modern politics.

Mathias had never been in love, but he was now, for all that he was betrothed to marry the laird's daughter, Lilias. Fortunately, she was no more interested in the marriage than was he and so she helped them. Everything was interesting, especially the secrets. Everyone had some. Mathias was strong, intelligent, and honorable, and wanted Kenzie although he knew it made no sense. Kenzie grew more and more enamored herself, although she missed her da and brothers. Navigating past men with ambitions and men from other clans was more difficult that it would seem when all of them wanted you dead. It was a good story, although I cam not a huge lover of time travel. It had plenty of action, romance, and friendship. It had everything. I recommend it.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Loving Her Highland Thief by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #dragonblade #lovingherhighlandthief

First off I must admit this isn't one of my favorite genre's. I'm always sad that the one who travels in time, leaves loved ones behind.

The H is strong, loyal and caring. The h wants to return to her time and family so she tries everything to leave her Highlander behind. What added another layer of entertainment was her collie dog and her ram.

There is a nasty villain who causes problems, a Clan Chief not in good health, his daughter who maybe simple minded but sweet and a old women seer to round things off. Granted after the opening scene where the h finds herself centuries back in time and lands in the middle of a Highlander's fighting. She thinks it is an reenactment on her families property. This is the only true fight scene, but I enjoyed the feistiness of the h. She was no damsel in destress!

The H falls first for the h and doesn't understand why she keeps trying to run away. Of course, he doesn't understand or believe that she is from 2019.

Lovemaking off page, just some kisses and talk of what they did after the fact - heat level 1 out of 5 if that, plus a few kisses.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, violence, some romance and mostly clean. Loved the epilogue a few years in the future! (ljb)

Kenzie chases her prize ram and her dog into a cave, when she comes out the other side she is angry that a group of re-enactors on her land having a battle. Furious at these trespassers Kenzie demands they leave, what she doesn’t expect is to be kidnapped by a big handsome man. Mathias Stonach is surprised when a strange woman suddenly appears in the middle of a battle with the MacPhersons. When she starts demanding that they get off her land he knows something is wrong with her and demands she goes with him for her own safety.

As Kenzie and Mathias travel to the Stronach keep both Are finding themselves drawn to each other, but as time goes by things at the keep are also not what they appear and danger lurks around the corner.

You do not want to miss this story! I loved reading it and there is definitely some surprises in this book. I loved Mathias and Kenzie is definitely a woman after my own heart. You will love Ramsey! Definitely recommend reading this book!

A Scottish lass wanders into a cave only to come out in 1203. Bewildered she is captured by a Highland Warrior who is as stubborn as she. As the personalities clash the outcome is inevitable… love! The story captured me right away and I was drawn into the emotional turmoil of this strong-willed lass. The decision between her life & family isn’t 2019 or he heart in 1203 made for a compelling dilemma. The bond with her animals was a nice touch, her and Brodie (her beloved border collie’s) relationship is incredibly endearing. The story was beautifully written and the characters go straight to your heart.

I really loved this book a lot, and enjoyed sinking into it during an entire day of travel, but I had two gripes. I wish It was longer, and I wish the romance was more of a slow burn. It starts out great, very believable and real, but once they start entertaining the possibility of a romance it’s just cranked up to 1000 with instant devotion and declarations of timeless love.

I just would have liked everything to slow down a bit more so we would really dig into the plots and characters. Really get some more tension going. I think if this book was like 20-30% longer that would have been fantastic.

Kenzie MacMartin chases her ram through a cave in 2019 only to find on the other side she is now in 1203.
At first she thinks a group of re - enactors are trespassing on her land but it soon become obvious that something is not quite right.

Mathias kidnaps Kenzie and plans on taking her back to his clan. Kenzie has other ideas and tries to escape so she can return to the cave and 2019.

I loved this time travel romance. It was well written with great characters. I especially loved the ram and the dog in this story as it added a touch of humour and they were always there to protect Kenzie when needed.
It also had just the right amount of romance for me.

Cannot wait to read book two in this series.

Thank you to Netgalley, Dragonblade publishing and the author for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.

Sheep farmer Kenzie MacMartin and her trusty collie are searching for a valuable escaped ram.  The caves that she goes through will take her somewhere she never imagined.

Mathias Stronach and his men are in the process of stealing some Highland cattle when he has to rescue a strangely dressed young woman.

This is a time slip,  historical romance.  Our twentieth century heroine is in for a very difficult time.  Our medieval hero has more than his share of trouble without a crazy woman turning up to cause more.  Lots of fun, danger and great characters.

I loved it.

Good story

I was thrown off by the title.
I enjoyed the story because the story was original, the characters were interesting and the time travel was exciting. Having Brodie as a sidekick was funny and heartbreaking combined. Totally worth staying up late to finish reading.

2.6 Stars: Hilarious
Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Notes: POV = 3rd Person
Characters: I will readily admit that I loved Kenzie (FMC). She jumped head first into this book kicking butt and taking names (literally). I liked Mathias (MMC), too, although he seemed almost too perfect. Like a golden retriever; protective and loyal.

Plot/Story: There was a lot of potential here, and I did enjoy it well enough. I am disappointed we didn’t get more history. It was also incredibly predictable. Speaking of potential, the conflict had it, too. Instead of exploring what had been set up, though, the main conflict was solved within a couple pages. It was very much of the vibes of “-and then everyone clapped!”

Romance: This is one of those stories where you can see the chemistry and the potential, but it falls flat. While the potential is there, it moves too quickly and feels insta-lovey.

General: Not a fan of the epilogue, highly unrealistic.

Quotes I Really Like:

Overall:
I would probably read the next one, because it was still really funny.

Short and sweet story with an adorable border collie, Brodie. It was enjoyable but a little too insta-lovey for me. I always enjoy how the male MCs never understand the modern lingo and there was no shortage of that in this book. Mostly fade to black.

I didn't like that Lilias was deemed too young for Mathias to marry (arranged) but Eumann was not. I'm not sure if we got an actual age for Lilias but she was described as young and our FMC, Kenzie, gasped and was outraged that Mathias could marry someone so young. So, not sure if Eumann is also pretty young or what. In the epilogue, which is only 3 years later, Lilias has already given birth to their son and is pregnant again. Not sure if the author just forgot that little detail or what. I'm hoping young meant 15 or 16 and Eumann is only a few years older, max.

I Love Time Travel but not this one

As bad as I wanted to like this book it was lame, to the point of being stupid. I'm sorry but the ram was incredibly a waste of time and the most ideal perfect dog ever was not horrible but sometimes ridiculous. I know border collies are known to be the smartest dogs ever but it is a stretch for the dog to take the ram back home and time travel back with the ram and her whole herd of sheep, too comical. The hero didn't come off as smart or that he would have the ability to lead. He was a bit bumbling and naive to the whole clan takeover by the villain. I just didn't like it.
