Fog Lake Suspense #5

Legacy of Lies: The Colsons

Rate this book
Madison Colson never wanted to come back to Fog Lake, Tennessee. Her family’s reputation was forever tarnished when her father was accused of a string of violent murders over a decade ago. She and her brothers were shunned from the area—by everyone except their aunt. At least, that’s how it felt.

Now her aunt is dying, and Madison is the only one who can help. But as soon as she arrives back in town, trouble starts—big trouble.

Another young woman is dead, and the method seems eerily similar to the murders her father was convicted of. Now the whole town is on edge—and pointing fingers.

When FBI Agent Ryan Michaels is sent to investigate, Ryan and Madison instantly clash. But unless they manage to work together, the killer will remain at large . . . and Madison might become his next victim.

She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

*Before my review, I want to point out that the Goodreads book blurb has some inaccuracies from the actual story. The main male hero of the story is actually named Shane Townsend, not Ryan Michaels . And the main female heroine's aunt is not actually dying, she is already dead when the book begins. I have found updated and accurate blurbs on other sites and wanted to note that here.*

My review:
This book was fantastic! Even though it is technically book five in the Fog Lake series, it absolutely can be read as a stand alone novel. I really appreciated that jumping into this book, I could not even tell that it was folded into a series. Yet, now I am completely enthralled with this story line and already have book six loaded onto my ereader and ready to go, because I need to know what happens in the next two books in this series.

The tension was perfect between the two main characters. Agent Shane Townsend's father was the man who solved the Good Samaritan serial killer murders and put Madison's father in prison for those crimes. Madison has good cause to not trust Agent Townsend and I thought her mistrust of the FBI and other law enforcement officers was understandable.

The author did a great job of showing the impact of Madison's father's arrest on her family both in the past and the present. I liked getting to know all three of the Colson siblings and watching them interact as adults who had been through something so horrible.

It was so interesting to watch as certain events and facts were brought to light throughout the course of the story. I also enjoyed watching as Madison and Shane worked together to try to stop the current killings that were going on and began to actually enjoy working together and to care for each other.

This story has a definite conclusion and the reader gets the answers needed in regards to who was behind the recent murders, yet there is still some question regarding whether things are truly finished with the Good Samaritan murders and if the right man is actually the one behind bars. This is what makes me anxious to read more in the series. This story was very well written and kept me on the edge of my seat to find out more.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

"Do you know how thrilling it is to see the last traces of life slip from someone's eyes? It never fails to remind me of how fragile life is."

The eerie words of a cold blooded killer, although the mode of operation is to make others think that the act is that of a "Good Samaritan". . . . . however, the masked figure in Madison Colson's bedroom that night had not exhibited the least bit of charity. The fact that her father was in prison, having been convicted of multiple murders under that exact moniker does not help Madison's case when the F. B. I. shows up at her door. Why in the world had she come back to Fog Lake?

F. B. I. Special Agent Shane Townsend's father was the one who had sent James Colson to prison all those years ago, and it's obvious from the hostility blazing across Madison Colson's face that she still believes her father to be innocent. Feelings aside, can Madison, and perhaps her brothers, help his investigation or will they forever remain on opposite sides of the proverbial fence? Trust is a fragile thing, much like love; hard fought and easily destroyed

What a thriller!

Chilling and Exciting!

Another creepy mystery set in Fog Lake. This was an interesting read with new characters to the series that I really liked-the Colson siblings. I look forward to more stories in this series because I need to know what happens next!

Have you ever found yourself starting to pray for characters in a book and then remember they’re just fictional characters and not real?
That’s what happens whenever I read a book written by Christy Barritt. I want to pray for them because they ALL go through so many trials. Each day they are hit with something new or their lives are in danger. I’ve said this before, but I’m not sure I would ever want to be one of Christy Barritt’s characters because she puts them through so much! WOW!
This story has a creepy side to it and yet, it keeps you so spellbound you don’t want to put it down.
The author uses the first-person point of view for parts of the story where we are reading the bad guy’s thoughts. She does it in such a way that it makes us feel all the emotions and demented thoughts of this guy. However, it doesn’t give us clues as to who it is! DARN!
I am always stumped as to the bad guy.
Christy Barritt is so talented in writing these suspenseful stories. They will keep you reading and captivated so much that you will look up and realize it’s well past your bedtime. Then you can’t go to sleep because you picture all the scary stuff these characters are going through, and you hear all the strange spooky noises in your house. This is definitely what makes a great author of suspense books. When you keep looking over your back even after you’ve finished the book.
I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again. Christy Barritt truly is a gifted author because her books are always so full of interesting adventures that make it so hard to breathe. This book is so suspenseful I had no idea which person was the true bad guy. My heart was pounding and my mind was going fast trying to figure out how it was all going to end.
This story will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish it. Be prepared to not put it down, even to eat or sleep! If you like twists and turns, “who done it” stories, then you need to buy this book!
I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I like books that are suspenseful without being graphic. This author is one of my favorites when it comes to clean mystery stories. She has a knack for having her stories move at a good pace while keeping you on the edge of your seat. It is time to settle in for a night of suspense, secrets, list of suspects and an expertly written book that will send shivers down your spine.

I can’t imagine being in a family where your father has been convicted of murder and labeled the Good Samaritan Killer. Madison has never believed that her father was guilty but the town does. Coming back to town to bury her aunt brings a host of emotions for her. I liked learning about her past and how awful her aunt was to her and her brothers. Wanting to do the right thing, she reaches out to her brothers to plan the funeral for her aunt. I think just being back in town gave Madison the creeps and she had good reason to feel that way.

When unexplained videos start surfacing again that closely resemble the pattern of the Good Samaritan Killer, FBI Special Agent Shane steps in to investigate. Seeing Madison on the latest video brings chaos to the town. Why is someone after her and why are they copying another killer? Shane is not sure who to believe the more involved he gets into the case.

The story is filled with twists that had me guessing till the end. I wasn’t quite sure if Madison’s dad is guilty but there are enough unexplained incidents that made me wonder. I liked how Madison was able to reconnect with her two brothers and try to mend their relationship. Doubt starts to shine a light on one of the brothers when unexplained items are found in his home. Can you imagine the terror Madison feels as she starts to think that her brother is guilty of murder?

The ending is very good and leads to a very unexpected suspect. It’s a race to save Madison as a video shows up with her in dire need of help. Will she be rescued in time? The author leaves us with a cliffhanger and I am excited to continue this story in the next book.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Mystery and Suspense books were not a favorite genre of mine until I read one of Chirsty Barritt's books. I now enjoy the genre and I enjoy Christy's books. I recently read Book 5 of the Fog Lake Suspense series, Legacy of Lies: The Colsons.

Madison Colson has always loved her Hometown of Fog Lake, Tennessee. She had to move away years ago when her father was convicted of being a Serial Killer after many women were killed in Fog Lake. Madison has to return to Fog Lake when her Grandmother passes away. She is hoping to return to a town that is now peaceful. Unfortunately, not too long after returning it seems the "Good Samaratian Killer" or a Copycat has also returned to Fog Lake. Madison has always believed her father is innocent and is not the Good Samartian Killer, even though he was convicted of the crime. Shane Townsend, an FBI Special Agent, is assigned to investigate the new troubles in town. He believes Madison is the newest target of the Serial Killer and he needs to protect her throughout the investigation. Madison will have to trust Shane, even though Shane's father was the one who bought the charges against Madison's Dad. The Residents of Fog Lake are getting agitated at the fact the the Serial Killer is back. Will Madison learn to trust Shane and fight against the Serial Killer together? Will there be a Romantic spark between Madison and Shane? Will the Serial Killer be caught?

WOW, another gripping Suspense Book by Christy Barritt. I was captivated from the very first chapter and did not stop until I was done reading. Author Christy Barritt really made this book particularly exciting. I kept reading and I thought I had the suspect figured out, but so many twists and turns, showed me to be incorrect. That is all good with me, that is what makes a book soo good! Madison was scared at the thought that the Serial Killer could be one of her brothers. Shane Townsend was an AMAZING character in this book. He wants to protect Madison while investigating the current events in Fog Lake. The book was a quick read, but an EXCELLENT READ! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Mystery and Suspense!

Current day
Fog Lake, Tennessee
Main characters:
Madison Colson: Attempted murder victim
Isaac Colson: Madison’s brother, an attorney
“Bear”: Madison and Isaac’s older brother, recluse living in the woods
FBI Special Agent Shane Townsend: Sent to Fog Lake on assignment
Serial Killer

A contemporary murder mystery with plenty of action.

After Madison, Isaac, and Bear's aunt was murdered Madison realized the murderer was after her as well. But he wants to play with her until he’s ready for her to die, like a cat with a mouse.

FBI Special Agent Shane Townsend was sent to Fog Lake to respond to a murder which turns out to be Madison’s aunt.

The Colson family is reunited for the funeral. Bear, a recluse hasn’t seen his brother and sister for many years, the reason for which was a mystery.

Because this case is important to them, all of the Colsons get involved to help solve the string of “Good Samaritan” murders.

Interesting short book. In my opinion it wrapped up a bit too quickly, otherwise it was a good mystery and I enjoyed it.

Question I hope is answered in the rest of the series: How could the aunt have a video of the original Good Samaritan’s murder? Very suspenseful! Loved it
Looking forward to starting the next in the series, Secrets of Shame?

I REALLY enjoyed this book. I had no idea who was The Good Samaritan Killer. Just when I thought I had an idea something happened to make me questions that thought or rule that person out.

I have only read one other book by this author and I have to say I liked this one even better. I believe this is the beginning of a series so I am excited to read more.

If you like romantic suspense I highly recommend this read.

Fog Lake, TN. What happened here? Long ago, three children dealt with a very off-putting aunt. Rooms were kept locked, but is that so unusual? The children had nightmares, but that occurs, sometimes. Is there a different reason behind that? Exactly who is the Good Samaritan Killer and are they really behind bars, or not?

This story has a romance, but it's driven and easy to read. The story is engaging with a good bit of suspense. At times it's a little predictable, but I don't mind that sometimes. Faith wasn't thrown out though it's lighter on that. I do love the mystery, and this story worked to put in a lot of suspicion and drama factors.

It is in first person POV, which is not my favorite, but worked for this story.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. A positive review is never required and this review is what I think about this book.

This book was good. A little tough because of graphic content. Not as bad as other books. With that being said I'm giving it five stars because I can usually guess who did it. This time I couldn't and that I love in a book.

"Legacy of Lies" by Christy Barritt is definitely a page turner. I haven't read all the books in this series but I didn't feel like I was missing any part of the story even through it is book 5 in the series. I definitely want to read the rest of them and have added them to my To Be read list.
If a reader likes mysteries and clean love stories, then I recommend this one. I will say I felt the book ended on a cliff hanger so I have to read book 6 soon.

I was given a contemporary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

Barritt has given readers another engaging and well paced novel of suspense. I can't imagine Madison, living under the shadow of a father convicted of terrible murders. Then an apparent copycat killer is on the loose and Madison is attacked. Allowed to live, the threat to Madison makes for good suspense.

Along with the danger to Madison comes another threat. The FBI agent investigating her case is the son of the man who put her father in prison. I appreciate Madison's strength. Her character is developed well. The plot moves quickly and is well done except for the villain sort of coming out of nowhere. I do wish there had been some foreshadowing of that person.

This is the fifth novel is a series. I have not read the others but did find this one reads very well on its own. Barritt is a prolific writer. Having recently read two of her many novels, I am happy to see she has maintained her engaging writing style and plot construction.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Things are heating up in Fog Lake! Once again, Christy Barritt kept me reading-and guessing! Midway into the book I was so sure I knew who the Good Samaritan Killer is, but then she went and flipped that upside down. Who is he?! What is Isaac hiding? Something's up with him, I'm sure of it. Haunting read from cover to cover. Can't wait for Secrets of Shame: The Colsons!

Whew. Talk about suspense. This book is suspense-filled. It’s going to keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing and second-guessing who you think the bad guy is. And trust me, you might not be right the first time. Or maybe you were but then you think you weren’t so you find a different one. Yeah. It’s that good!!

Lost on what I’m saying?

Madison was a child when her father was accused, tried, and put in jail for being a serial killer. Only she knows he’s innocent. But she also knows that maybe some of what she said could have put him in jail and that’s something that haunts her to this day.

When their father went to prison she and her brothers went to live with a family member who did not care about them and she is scared from that a bit. She’s super close to her brother close in age but her oldest brother she’s not. As soon as he turned 18 he left and abandoned her. At least, that’s how it seems.

Now she’s back in town for a funeral and the serial killer has resurfaced. This proves her father couldn’t have been the serial killer. But also he’s after her! And he almost kills her at the beginning of the book. Can she figure out who the killer is and free her father? Will he kill her or someone she cares about before she can find him?

And most importantly, can she work with the son of the man who arrested and put away her dad for crimes he didn’t commit?

This is book one in a new series and you’re going to want to binge read them all.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

What I think you should know:
Legacy of Lies by Christy Barritt is the fifth book in the Fog Lake Suspense series. Although this book is the fifth in a series you can start with it and completely understand and appreciate the story. I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to go back and read the previous books in the series.

What you might need to know:
This book involves a serial killer who has “returned” after a fifteen year absence. There are kidnappings and murders.
While the main story has resolution there is an overarching story that does not resolve in this book.

What I think about this book:
Good Gracious what a crazy start, the first chapter is from the perspective of the Killer! If you are a fan of Barritt you know that you are in for a wild ride with this story, you are in for danger and mystery from the first page to the last! I couldn’t help but love Madison, who has dedicated her life to helping the forgotten victims of violent crimes. I felt so sorry for her and the guilt that she feels over her part in her father’s arrest. I completely understand why she has a mistrust of law enforcement. Shane was a very interesting character, it was fun to watch him go from someone completely confident that his father made the correct arrest to him admitting that there may be more to the story that first appears. I enjoyed the tension between Madison and Shane but the way that they were also able to work together! This might be my favorite of Barritt’s works that I have read so far. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and get to know more about Isaac and Bear.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

This is the fifth in the Fog Lake series, but it feels more like the first of a series in the shared world of Fog Lake. Luke makes a few welcome cameos, and Jaxon’s and Abby’s cafe is mentioned, but that’s the only link to the Wilders and the first four books. Fog Lake is the link, and we are now following the Colsons.

This book focused on Madison, who has returned to Fog Lake to bury her aunt, who raised the siblings after their father was convicted of several serial killings. She and her siblings are best described as estranged (though it’s a lot more complicated than that), and none of them liked their aunt. But they were there to do their familial duty.

Nothing is ever simple in Fog Lake. Madison is nearly killed there, initially framed, then a target of what looks to be a copy cat of the Good Samaritan Killer—the moniker given to her father, though he still claims he’s innocent (and she believes him).

Her distrust of law enforcement and her father’s reputation should keep her far away and fully uninterested in the FBI agent in town to investigate the new crimes. Instead, there’s chemistry. Attraction. Fondness that becomes more.

Watching their journey is a delight, as they both have a lot of issues to overcome. Also satisfying is the small arcs her brothers get. I look forward to their stories.

The crime was solved in a satisfying way after a steady escalation throughout the story. But it’s the larger, overarching mystery that really has me hooked. Looking forward to what’s next.

Christy Barritt always delivers great mystery/suspense. In Legacy of Lies, book 5 in her Fog Lake Suspense series, the book begins with some serious creep factor and keeps up the action-packed pace throughout. I loved it! Set in a small touristy town in the Smoky Mountains, this novel has a great sense of place. It also has major and minor characters to love. Coming from opposite sides of the crime, Madison (the daughter of a convicted serial killer) and Shane (an FBI agent) join forces to find the truth no matter where it takes them. There’s a lot to overcome for these characters, but the chemistry between the two is definitely a strong factor in their relationship. The crime itself takes the characters and the reader on a twisting journey. It really kept me guessing. While the book comes in around 400 pages, it was a page-turner, making it a quick read for me. I was a bit wary of starting the series at book 5, but Legacy of Lies reads like a standalone. I just have lots more books to add to my TBR! This book captured me from the beginning, and I want to return to Fog Lake as soon as possible. Overall, this novel is a recommended read!

Recommended.

Audience: adults.

hristy Barritt has done it again. Just when I think her books can get any better - Boom she writes Legacy of Lies. Legacy of Lies is book five in the Fog Lake Suspense Series. I have not read any of this series stories - but I had no problem following along. Things that you will get when you read a book from this author: Late nights, page turning and complete shock.

Madison is convinced that her dad is not what everyone has made him out to be. She feels that he is not a serial killer. She knows that she cannot help him now, so she has made it her life work to help others. However, she returns back to Fog Lake, Tennessee after her aunt dies and all of a sudden she is a killer's target. FBI Special Agent Shane wants to help Madison, however it's his dad that put her dad away. Now that violence and uncertainty has plagued this town again, can he get her to trust him?

This story is filled with twists and turns. I would think that I had everything figured out, then boom another path presents itself. On Madison's dad - I am not 100% convinced he is innocent but the author writes in that shows there could be shadows of doubt. The characters stories were well written.

Legacy of Lies chronicles the lives of Madison Colton and her family. Years ago, the justice system failed Madison and her family by allowing her father to be convicted of crimes he claims he did not commit. FBI agent Shane Townsend, son of the agent responsible for the conviction of Madison’s father, seeks to investigate either the return of The Good Samaritan Killer or a copycat killer. As part of a series, this book can be read on its own, but I recommend reading the books in order.

Keeping Madison safe becomes Shane’s top priority. The twists and turns this book takes kept me interested. My one complaint would be the way the lack of a proper ending. I felt like there needed to be more resolution. The characters were well-developed and multi-faceted.

I have to say I want to read more about Melinda’s journey and the lives of her father and brothers. So if you enjoy Christian suspense novels, check out this book for yourself.

Another great story by Christy Barritt!

We're back in Fog Lake the town with a dark history and there's a killer on the loose!

This time the daughter of a serial killer, Madison Colson is attacked and drugged, but at first FBI agent, Shane Townsend, isn't convinced. He soon figures out quickly that someone is out to destroy Madison and her brothers.

I enjoyed this story, I love Christy Barritt's writing style and the way she weaves a story. This story she does give a very subtle hint early in the story, but I completely missed it until near the end.

The dynamics between Madison and Shane were well done. The fact that Shane's father was responsible for putting Madison's father in prison created some interesting moments with some honest questions and soul searching.

The way this story ended gives me the impression the story around Madison's father isn't over yet. I look forward to reading more!

This is my second Christy Barritt mystery, but the first one I read of her Fog Lake series. This novel starts off tense and creepy and had me hooked from the first chapter. I needed to know who the Good Samaritan Killer was. Or, at least, who the copycat was. If it was even a copycat. So many questions I needed answers to!

Christy Barritt is amazing at keeping the reader in suspense of who could possibly be the criminal. However, there were some aspects of this book that just keeps me from giving it a full 5 out of 5 stars. Her brother's romantic life, for example, felt forced and out of the place in the novel and the ending felt rushed.

Overall, though, if you are someone who enjoys mystery, I would recommend this novel. It's suspenseful and keeps you guessing.

Legacy of Lies starts with that spine tingling sensation you get when fear takes hold of you and doesn’t let up until you end the book. You never knew what new twist awaited you on the next page. I really enjoyed the character development of Madison and her brothers dealing with grief and trauma in different ways and thought it felt very authentic. I was reminded of a Criminal Minds vibe without overly gory detail though the book was really a formidable crime thriller. I felt the agents were a little static in character development, and the romance that was weaved in seemed a little out of place. I also felt that there was quite a bit of info dump at different points in the story line that interrupted the natural flow of reading. With that said, I think this book is a solid choice for anyone who enjoys a good thriller or crime/detective drama.

Excitement returns to Fog Lake, which seems to attract suspicious and deadly elements. When Madison Colson comes back to her hometown to bury her aunt who raised her after her father’s arrest as a serial killer, she finds danger and distrust. FBI Special Agent Shane Townsend confronts her but then they tentatively join forces to find a new killer—or could it be The Good Samaritan Killer resurrected? The characters are well-developed and interact so realistically. The story keeps readers on edge, and it seems impossible to determine who is actually pulling off the murders. The twisted plot resembles the distorted murderer, who also has a POV in the novel. Even if you haven’t read the others in the series, you won’t want to miss this thriller. The intriguing mystery stands on its own. I received a book from the author (I almost typed murderer). All opinions are my own.

I could not put this book down! Madison returns to Fog Lake because her aunt is killed, bringing Madison back to a past that she would like to forget. She always believed her father was innocent of murders that took place years earlier, but he was convicted and sent to prison. Now, someone kils her aunt and attacks Madison. Is the Good Samaritan Killer back or is it a copycat killer? Is her father really innocent? FBI Special Agent Shane Townsend is on the case but he has mixed feelings. After all, it is his own father who sent Madison's father to prison! Yet he has some doubts of his own about her father's guilt and he knows Madison could be killed next if they do not figure out who the killer is and stop him.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but the views are entirely my own. I loved it!

Legacy of Lies: The Colsons is the fifth installment from Christy Barritt’s Fog Lake Suspense series. Since I have not had the pleasure of reading the other books in the series, I believe this can be read as a stand alone. I thought this was a fabulous read. It is full of mystery, suspense, and romance. I was hooked from the beginning and all the way to the end. I enjoyed the plot and great characters.

I am giving Legacy of Lies: The Colsons five stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean romantic suspense. I am looking forward to reading the previous books from the Fog Lake Suspense series to see what has happened before this one.

I received a digital copy of Legacy of Lies: The Colsons from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Oh so good! This is apparently part of a series, but read wonderfully as a stand alone. I generally enjoy this authors works but this one is one of the best I’ve ever read. The first chapter made me curious and then the second grabbed me and didn’t let go. I got into the mystery and the suspense was really well done.

Madison and Shane are a great couple and the author made their coming together work well. I liked the differences in background, but that they have to work together because lives are on the line. I enjoyed the story and the ending was really good. I do have some lingering questions and am wondering if future books in the series will answer them...we shall see!

I had a BETA Copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Christy Barritt’s books are always interesting and this one is no exception. The suspense in this one is great and keeps you wondering until the very end. She uses themes of forgiveness, trust, sibling relationships, and overcoming the past as part of the plot. FBI investigator, Shane has to find out who is targeting Madison before more women are killed. Madison has trust issues because Shane’s father put her father in prison for murder several years ago, and she still believes he is innocent. I would highly recommend reading this book.

A gripping story to the very end

This captivating story is a page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Madison and Isaac are in their hometown of Fog Lake because of the death of their aunt who mostly raised them. Their dad is in prison for a string of murders he claims he has been wrongly charged for.

On her first night back, Madison, asleep in her childhood room at her aunt's house wakes up to strong hands around her neck squeezing the life out of her.

There mare many surprising twists to this story that kept the pages of this intriguing story turning to the very end.

Great addition to this series

This is the Christy Barritt suspense I love! You are in the story, looking over your shoulder and shivering in the fog covering the area. You're looking into a killers eyes and fighting for your life. The Colson family have suffered for years and Madison and her brothers Isaac and Bear have grown up to try to give to society though few cared to help them. I think the Fog Lake series is her best and I hope we'll read more of the Colson's.
