This is this author’s first book. The premise is a good one. She keeps good tension. The twists and turns keep the story moving. There is at least one very explicit sex scene that I, personally, could do without. There are also some editing errors. All in all, I will probably read the next one.
The back end, from shortly after about the sixty percent mark, is what bumped it up to four stars. The book could have done with another editing pass. There is a stretch in the middle with an uncomfortable amount of punctuation problems. I also don't think that it was split well between parts one and two but I understand the reasoning behind it. I think I've gotten spoiled with reading tightly threaded plots, which could be why the first 60% or so was harder to get through. It didn't feel nearly as focused as the second half but that could also be all the POV characters at that point had clear objectives. As far as the story itself, it's got strong Beauty and the Beast vibes as well as Persephone/Hades vibes. There was a decent amount of mirroring happening, which is always nice. Where the author shines best is in her descriptions. There were a couple of moments when my monkey brain went "Ooh, delicious nightmare fuel." My favorite characters were none of the main characters but the main characters should be glad I remember their names. Normally if my favorite characters are not the main characters, and even then I often describe it as characters earning their names, I don't remember their names. They get monikers such as Main Girl, Dick, My Guy, Fox Guy, Love Interest, and so forth. So the fact that these guys earned their names, one of them for being so repulsive that I learned it specifically to hiss about how much I hate him (which is a good thing in this instance), is impressive. There is sex in the book, which I could have taken or left, along with all the consent issues you would find in a story about a fey kidnapping a mortal from the mortal world. Which, if you're interested in this book, you're aware of. The consent issues get resolved by the end. But if you can make it through the first sixty percent, the rest of the book makes up for it. I'm curious to see what happens to my surviving favorite character in the next one. Decent enough story, probably won't be added to my roster of books I'll reread often, but that's with the acknowledgement that I tend to prefer high fantasy over faerie fantasy. It may not actually be anything against the book, just my personal preferences.
The Call of Bones is a story all its own! There's peril, adventure, humor, romance that makes my inner teenage girl squeal, revenge, magic and best of all faeries. While this is a debut novel, it sure as hell doesn't feel like one. I laughed. I cried. I sat on the edge of my seat. I will forever want to be a part of the Shadow Court and no one has my heart like Sam does. Seriously asking for a friend can you marry a fictional character? The story is captivating and I cannot wait to see what lies in store for these incredible characters and the wonderful fantasy land that the author has invented!
Excellent description. In my opinion, M. Sahagun's best skill as an author is her descriptive work, the imagery of the characters, and the world were incredible at drawing you into the story. I easily got hooked and pulled into the story. The only reason it was a 4-star review was because I personally was not the biggest fan of the twist/choice of one of the characters' decisions (trying to be vague to avoid spoilers). It was definitely an effective twist/change because I didn't see it coming, lol. Perhaps I need to re-read to look for the foreshadowing, I'm sure was there, but I missed entirely. The book concludes effective with some resolve but with enough of a cliffhanger that you will definitely want to read the rest of the story. I'm excited to see what else M. Sahagun writes next in this series and in other books in the future.
I enjoyed this book so much, I gifted a copy to my sister. This story could easily be the newest Netflix most watched.
I did give it 4 stars due to some errors that could have been fixed with some more editing. However, the story and characters kept me from caring too much. Honestly, I would not guess this is a debut novel.
It's one thing to have a story, but the author brings you to your knees torn between loving and hating the characters. Loving the morally gray characters. Can't wait to see what else the author has to offer in her future work.
I’m giving this book 3 stars because I couldn’t seem to get through the story without being confused. I had to stop reading and figure out who was who and what was going on. There were many instances where the book jumped around too fast and I had to figure out what had just happened. I enjoyed the character development of the villain but was so confused and disappointed in the main romantic interest. The magic system was unexplained and confusing and so was her past. I had a hard time really getting into the story until past the 70% mark.
A bit confusing at first and slow but once it got going it was pretty interesting…loved the magic and other fantasy elements…like the witches and different creatures/faeries(reminded me of ACOTAR)the twists kept things interesting as well as the humor and heartfelt moments..there were some errors that will hopefully get fixed, but overall it’s a pretty interesting story that’ll hopefully be better with the next book.
This book was my very first ARC review and I have to say that it was a decent read. I finished it in one night and I loved the characters. It was a bit hard to follow at first and I found myself taking notes here and there to remind myself what was going on. All in all, I enjoyed the book and I’m looking forward to reading the next one!
A fun and diverting read. The writing was pretty well put together for a debut author. The first chapter pulled me in with the descriptive writing. The whole story has the low fantasy, fae vibe. It does have some captive-type triggers so check those. There were some editing issues that seems like just an oversight. Overall it was a nice read and I'm interested to see how the next book pans out.
A fantastic debut novel I can’t wait for the sequel! A gorgeous world of fantasy beautifully written by the author. I loved it and it’s a definite must for fantasy readers and lovers of the fae. I’m so excited for the sequel can’t wait to follow these characters and this world further.
I was a little lost in the beginning of the book, but I discovered that was on purpose! The plot twists and the way truths are explained was amazing. A very unique world with beauty and the beast vibes.
This was a really good book. A fantasy book with sweet romance in it makes a good break from my high spice fantasy and dark romance. Full of adventure and magic and my favorite, Fae /Faeries. Plenty of captivating plot twists and overall a really fun read. I can't wait to read the next book!
Given that this is a debut book for this author, I really enjoy it. The book has all the elements that you are looking for! The pace is fast after you move past from the first bit. Overall, I really enjoy it and would recommend it to my friends
This book was pretty good. It had suspense, and plot twists, and romance all tied together. It was a rollercoaster, especially the end. This book is kinda boring in the first bit, but once you got past that it picked up quickly. A tiny bit of spice, but this book is more plot focused. The characters inner monologue and behavior were funny and pretty relatable. If you’re an ACOTAR lover, you’d probably enjoy this!
