Journey with young Jarek and his tiger-warrior companion, Koj, as they team up with pirate princess, Serra, to confront the dread Malesur -- a villain set on devouring the denizens of this magical, patchwork world! Tellos is an all-ages rollercoaster ride of action and adventure, mystery and magic, and good versus evil! The perfect format for the perfect bedtime story -- for children of all ages!
Todd Dezago is an American comic book writer. He is best known for his collaborations with penciller Mike Wieringo on The Sensational Spider-Man (1996) and their creator-owned fantasy series Tellos, which premiered in 1999, as well as for co-creating Young Justice with artist Todd Nauck in the 1998 oneshot Young Justice: The Secret. His other Young Justice work includes the 1998 miniseries JLA: World Without Grown-ups. From 1999 to 2002 Dezago also wrote Impulse #50-89. In 2005 he co-created The Perhapanauts with artist Craig Rousseau.
This was the first comic series I ever read (unless you count Garfield)! I must've been about 12 when I first read it and I loved it back then.
The world is gorgeous and the story full of friendship. Seriously, the artwork is stunning. Cute characters, a beautiful colour palette and a warm-hearted tone keep it up there with my favourites.
The dialogue is a little dated, there are tropes and clichés galore, but that doesn't spoil the fun!
Bizarrely, I had completely forgotten the ending. I can't make up my mind whether I love or hate it. I think it knocked the stuffing out of teenaged Rae though.
Sadly, Mike Wieringo tragically passed away in 2007. The artwork brings these stories to life and so I can't imagine there will be any more Tellos. This volume stands alone as a complete story arc and is definitely worth a read.
Appeal Characteristics: lush art, family friendly, adventurous marketable for boys/girls
You meet a man-tiger, Koj and his apprentice, Jack, on the run from lisping frogs. (HILARIOUS!)You are introduce to the planet/city they inhabit, what they are running from and who they run into along the way. They are taken on a quest filled with fun, adventure...and laughs.
I'm not usually a bring "adventure" reader. I will definitely be checking out the future issues of this particular comic. I wouldn't mind going along for the ride.
Tellos has remained a steadfast favorite of mine from the very first issue. Aside from how I love Mike Wieringo and Todd Dezago in other series, this story is a snappy adventure featuring a pirate queen, a tiger warrior, a Chosen One, a smart alek fox and an elf (sorry Ulf) with less sense then he should have.
Its also, if anyone gets this reference it'll be a spoiler, a fantasy comic equivalent to the Canadian show "The Odyssey" in a lot of ways. And I live for Portal Fantasies.
Its not overly complicated - a straightforward tale of a Chosen One who has to gather the companions and take down a nie impossible evil scourge. Here's the thing - pay attention to the little details. The blink and you miss comments, the just slightly out kilter moments.
It paints a whole different layer to this story.

I have been eyeing Tellos for years now. Now that the original 10 issues are back in print in a new deluxe hardcover format, I finally got my chance to read and it was well worth the wait.
It has a heartfelt story and is a fun adventure but the best part of The Tellos Saga is the Mike Wieringo art, pure eye candy!
I cannot wait to re-visit this book and appreciate the art for years and years to come.
Fantastic art and a fun adventure story with just enough heft to keep it from floating off into the atmosphere. If you're a fan of kind-hearted scoundrels, honorable warriors, ninjas, magic, dragons, airship pirates, and all the trappings of kitchen sink fantasy (and I mean, really, who isn't), definitely worth a read.
While there's nothing particularly groundbreaking (it checks off many fantasy cliches), it is energetic and has its heart in the right place. Plus, there's a scene that Tangled ripped off, so that was cool to see.
A reread of a comic I read as a young teen. Still enjoyable, but I've been exposed to so much over the years that it was less powerful to me this time. Would be enjoyed by those who liked Amulet or Battle Chasers.
Okay, so we don't have the signed and numbered edition, but I couldn't find it otherwise already on the site. But - it's so so so so so much fun. I couldn't stop reading. A boy and his best friend (who is a man-tiger) get caught up in a crazy adventure with a pirate girl and genie and an ulf (no, that's not a typo) with wings and a man-fox. They're fighting a big evil trying to take over the land of Tellos, and while it all sounds somewhat formulaic, that doesn't stop it from being amazingly fun. And the illustrations are incredible - beautifully drawn and colored! One of my favorite kinds of books.
A tiger-man named Koj is wanted for crime. His partner Jarek, a human boy, helps him escape. Meanwhile they run into a girl named Serra, she is a barterind pirate. Her boyfriend Hawke, has a deep secret that he won't tell her. Hawke is traveling with a sneak, smart alek fox by the name of Riki. He'll steal you blind at times if you don't pay attention. Jarek finds a amulet with ancient power. What is it? Read to find out!
Koj is tiger, I LOVE TIGERS!!! Serra really knows how to fight hand to hand and with sword, so does Koj. I love sword fights and hand-to-hand combat in movies.
One of the most entertaining and accessable fantasy comics ever made, Tellos is a book that I recommend to people that don't even read comics. Mike's art is absolutely beautiful and the storytelling is top notch.
