There's Something About Molly

Rate this book
Molly Princeton hasn’t met the right guy. Yes, she’s a dating coach. But she’s also a single mom with a rocky relationship history. She may be able to help others find love, but she doesn’t really need it in her life. Happiness doesn’t require falling in love. Winning a matchmaker competition however requires being part of a couple. And darn it, she needs to win this one. That’s when she sets her sights on Gavin Frank—the one man she would absolutely never fall in love with.

Gavin is her nemesis, her best friend’s ex, and yeah, okay, he’s sexy as sin. He’s also off limits. But she’s out of other options. Plus Gavin could use a fake relationship to keep his meddling mother from setting up blind dates with every available woman in the Mile High City. There’s no way he’d fall for Molly. None. Nada.

The two quickly learn there’s a thin line between hate and love, and she finds herself tipping onto the wrong side. For the first time, she doesn’t have all the answers. What the heck is she supposed to do next? Lucky for her, Gavin realizes there’s something about Molly he can’t resist…

Mixed feelings about this one. Love Gavin- Molly not so much. 3.5 STARS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really loved Gavin in this book. The bad guy in another relationship, he is trying to reform and not be the hated one. In all honesty, he has a bad rap from everyone surrounding him, but has recognized his issues and is working hard to solve them.
Molly, on the other hand. I really had a tough time connecting to her. She was annoying at times and could not get over the fact she was supposed to hate this guy. Molly also was continually down on herself, and for a dating coach, she never allowed herself to feel anything for any guy. Yeah, there really is something about Molly that struck me as soooo insecure and almost unlikeable in spots.
I really have mixed feelings on this one. I want to love these two together but it took me to the end to feel the connection. Hovland did a great job balancing them together between the bad persona of Gavin and the insecure Molly but I felt that Gavin had so much more to deal with in her world.
While they built a good repour, playful bantering’s, and enjoyed a steamy scene or two, I really missed the overall hold your breath moments that make a romance.
Overall, There’s Something About Molly is a fun, fast story that combines motherhood, best friends, and a swoon-worthy guy you will love.
If you're looking for a cute and funny, fake-dating book, 'There's Something About Molly' is perfect for you!
This book follows Molly, a single mom who's a dating coach, but is also single. Molly enters a matchmaker competition, but she needs a fake boyfriend to win. She decides Gavin Frank is the best choice. Gavin is her best friend’s ex husband, who also needs a fake relationship to stop his mother from setting him up on dates. Lines begin to blur and feelings start growing, Molly and Gavin can't resist each other.
This was such a laugh out loud book and I loved every minute of it and I highly recommend to everyone.
This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, humorous, steamy, contemporary romance novel. It has a likable female protagonist, a warm and caring male protagonist, matchmaking, supportive friends, sizzling chemistry, a heart-warming romance, many laugh out loud moments, and a happily ever after ending. The mom quotes at the beginning of each chapter are delightful. I am looking forward to reading Ms. Hovland's next entry in her outstanding "Mommy Wars" series with great anticipation. Each novel in the series can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand alone, but they are even more entertaining when they are read in order.
NetGalley and Entangled Publishing LLC kindly provided me with an ARC of this novel and this is my honest opinion.
3.5 funny stars
There's Something About Molly follows the story of Molly, Rachel's best friend from the first book in this series and Gavin, Rachel's ex-husband.
Yeah, I know! A complicated entanglement. But there's no issue as Rachel is now married to her ex's brother. It's told in 3rd person POV, in case you may not be a fan.
Molly is the lighthearted funny friend. She is a single mom, dealing with parenthood challenges all on her own. She is not a fan of change. And even if she is all tough and happy on the outside, she has commitment issues and has a hard time finding her ever after. She never gets past the first date as she always manages to pair her date with someone better.
Gavin is on a relationship fast after his last failed attempt at happiness. He's come a long way in the parenthood department since the first book but he's not ready for the string of dates his mother keeps setting him up to.
Long story short, these two end up fake and not so fake dating. The bits with them spending time with the kids are hilarious and authentic. As well as Molly's inner thoughts. I really related to her.
The story is light, funny, authentic, even a bit emotional. It wasn't a 5-star read because it takes a lot to get me to give the highest rating to a rom-com. I didn't get overly invested in the story. But still, I would definitely recommend it as a summer read.
Holy moly you guys - this series has been such a wonderful surprise for me! I love the unconventional relationships. I love the way the heroes care for and empower the heroines. I love - so so much - the way they cause my heart to flip, flutter and ache with emotion as it fully invests in the romance and goes all-in on the ride.
Gavin and Molly were an absolute delight to read! I wasn't always sure about Molly - not going to lie, her resistance to Gavin who - in this book anyway - was basically irresistible, drove me crazy sometimes. I did, however, love her character arc. I might have liked a little bit of a deeper dive into her insecurities, and a bit more of a resolution to what that was all about - but from a romance perspective, it was all completely satisfying to me.
And Gavin. Lord almighty, y'all. If you read Rachel, Out of Office (and you don't have to, but you should!) - you will be blown away by the dreamboat into which Christina Hovland managed to redeem this guy. I adored him. And I loved the support that Rachel - and all of Molly's friends - gave to their relationship.
In fact, maybe best of all in this series so far is the healthy, empowering, supportive network of female friendships that is portrayed. It's so rewarding and so much fun to read about.
In all - this was another fantastic story. I absolutely adored how it played out and my heart is so happy with he happily ever after Gavin and Molly were given. ~ Shelly, 4.5 Stars
this is a 'fake' dating romance, between two single parents that aren't each other's biggest fans.
this book sounded so interesting and the cover is so cute, but it took me weeks to read this, why? because this book felt too adult for me, not adult in the 'it had too many sex scenes' way, but in the 'characters are talking about adulting things' way.
let me explain, i love reading about characters older than me, and these characters were in their 30's (i think), and 30 is not old or anything, i just felt this book to be very adulting.
i know my review probably doesn't make any sense, but if you want to read this book the hero Gavin is the best!
I read this story as soon as I got it. I wanted to read it because I had heard so many good things about it. I was impressed that I read it so quickly. From my French-speaking eye, I found the author's writing to be fluid and relatively easy to read for me. Therefore, I could recommend it to other French speakers.
The characters were very endearing and also cute. I really enjoyed following their story and the ending. The ending was great. I would definitely recommend it.
There is a fine line of nailing humor and overall Christina Hovland has managed it well. All of the books from past series I have read have been fun, engaging, and worth my time.
With There's Something About Molly, we have a woman who is terrific at matching up others together but not exactly for herself.
Our fella has a history of not always being a stand-up guy and doing the right thing. He has been working towards doing better and is almost there.
These two come together with a fake relationship born out of need; his to get his mom off his back with arranging dates. She needs a partner for a contest she is entering. She thinks this is perfect because she has NO INTEREST in this fella.
Right, and let me sell you the Brooklyn Bridge for half price. Cute, fun, and our fella learns how to be a good guy.
this was such a fun read!!
i love all the banter and friendships and i frickin adored gavin’s character redemption cause i wasn’t sure that could happen after everything
the main thing for me was the lack of tension surrounding moly and gavin; it’s basically enemies to lovers but i think i just wasn’t feeling these two together
at the start when you get that brief hint that gavin is the love interest, my head hit the back of my seat with a hefty sigh cause i just don’t ship them ugh
overall, a super lighthearted, adorable and easy read that I still recommend!
***3.5/4 Stars***
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, hence the rounding up. It was funny and fun and filled with quite a few likeable/loveable crazy characters that I want more of, but boy...there were moments that had me yelling at the kindle and having to put it to the side. It definitely gave me all the feels and then some.
Gavin and Molly. I have to say, after all that Gavin did ~ or didn’t do ~ in Rachel, Out of Office, I honestly thought that there was no way he could redeem himself in my eyes...but I was wrong. I ended up loving Gavin. He hasn’t made the best choices in the past, but he has learned from them and is doing all he can to do better. He loves his kids, his family ~ even if his mom and her cat drive him crazy ~ and even his ex wife and her friends. Molly. I had a time with her, but I can say that I liked her. She’s snarky, sassy, loyal to her friends and family and a great mom to Ollie, but she is honestly her own worst enemy.
Their journey to their HEA was a slow and bumpy ride, filled with a few awkward moments here and there, but also with some heart warming ones as well. Once they both got out of their heads and were in the moment they had a flow that worked for me. The bantering was hilarious and they rocked at working together when it came to their boys and the chemistry was hot. The roadblock in their journey wasn’t a surprise, and it did take a bit of interference to get them past it, but I liked how it all turned out for them in the end.
Even though I had issues with Molly, this was, in the end, a fun read. Kellan, Brady and Ollie definitely added a good dose of chaos to mix. Agnes was a hoot and I would mind being friends with her. Catching up with Rachel, Travis, and hanging out with Kaiya, April and Sadie was a lot of fun and Evelyn definitely brought the meddling mom vibe to a whole new level. So, while I wasn’t totally team Molly, this book still had me cracking up and rolling my eyes as I turned the pages to see what would happen next!
Molly and Gavin made my weekend. This is definitely an adorable romance with some good laugh out loud moments. I think I spent 75% of my reading yelling at this duo (especially Molly) in my head as things progress. Talk about getting readers into their feels!
Molly was a slightly tough character to connect with at first. I liked the authenticity of her inner battles and how she is basically her own worst critic. In hindsight, it gave her a more realistic personality and amplified her persona pros; loyalty, motherhood and sassy sarcasm. Those pros helped me push past her constant effort to try and hate Gavin. I had no clue this novel follows Rachel Out of Office, and after getting to meet Gavin in these pages, I want to go back and read the first novel to get more depth on his faults. I think this would’ve made Molly’s inner mantra more understandable for someone like me coming in mid series. No worries though, this can definitely be read as a standalone and by the end I was all in for Team Molly! Now Gavin…. *fans self*… Gavin was ridiculously, smolderingly adorable! I totally get that he was the one to hate in the first book but man I have got to give props to Hovland for his redemption. She had me wanting my own personal Gavin (yes, I am happily married but shoosh).
Hovland did a lovely job of combining single motherhood/fatherhood, the strength of friendships and self-appreciation into a fun romp through the fake-dating scene. Entangled has me hyped for my upcoming read of April May Fall, also by Hovland. Now that I’ve got my feet wet with her writing style I am absolutely looking forward to more! If you’re looking for a fun romcom to cozy up to, I recommend jumping on board with this one!
Thank you, Entangled Publishing, for the gifted digital copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. True rating 3.5/5.
Christina Hovland writes such fun books. There's Something About Molly is the follow up to Rachel, Out of Office. I adore this world of women doing jobs that are so relevant and relatable to life right now. Molly has a online dating advice show but doesn't have the influencer lifestyle. She still struggles as a single mom to make ends meet and give her son all that she can. In order to win a large prize to send him to stunt camp, she enters a matchmaking contest. Through the contest and every day interactions with her son, her friends and his friends - Gavin ends up "helping" with the contest. Hijinks and lots of romance ensue. I love how Hovland brings humor and real life into the story. While we read romance for an escape, she provides us with one we can still relate to.
this is a solid 4.5 for me. I am a fan and will gladly devour any books she sends my way!
**My thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing LLC for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
Molly is a single mother to an 8 year old boy and his best friends are the twins of her best friend Rachel and her ex-husband Gavin who has made some questionable decisions in the past, therefore on principle Molly has never liked him. However when Rachel gets married to Gavins brother, things take a change when he dives into a lake to rescue her son when he is trying to be a stuntman.
While Gavin is currently on a voyage of self discovery after his fiancee left him, Molly is a MyTube influencer who gives dating tips online and gets paid with ads and online views.
Molly soon discovers that there is more to Gavin than meets the eye after she spends time with him and actually gives him a chance as a decent person. Gavin admits his faults and that he is trying to be a better person and may still mess up.
Mollys friends are a great support and she has the support and love of her landlady Agnes who has been like a mother to her and a grandmother to her son.
I really enjoyed the journey of this pair and the supporting roles of the friends and family that they have and I am really looking forward to Aprils story.
Book Review
Theres Something About Molly
By Christina Hovland
First there was Rachel Out of Office…. We became (or at least I did) enamoured with Gavin, Travis, and Dave - the Frank brothers.
Like Rachel Out of Office, This book also highlights the life of the single mom,and the never ending struggle to balance work, motherhood, and personal relationships.
Hovland effortlessly captures THAT moment. The moment in time where you blink, and the person before you is more than they were the moment before. You see them with fresh eyes, a new perspective, and in that one instant, the spark of love is lit.
For Molly, its the moment Gavin saves her son from a prank gone wrong. Isnt that the way of it though for single mothers? Its when men show our children love and affection that their “dad potential” seeps through and our hearts melt.
I appreciated the change in Gavin from the previous book to his character now. He has grown into fatherhood and not only acknowledges his mistakes but owns them. He takes the time to support Molly and points out to her what she cant see herself, that her self deprecating humour had become a bad habit that clouded her View of herself. He taught her to appreciate and value herself more and to be confident.
The perfect relationship, the perfect husband, the perfect mother…..doesn’t exist - its finding the perfect person for you, someone who sees you….ALL of you….and loves you, making YOU better, because of the love you share.
I felt SEEN in this book. My struggle as a single parent, My moment, my child, my happily ever after… Hovland sees, and her writing reflects experiences I can relate to and appreciate.
There is Something About Molly…thanks to Christina Hovland for another fabulous read full of love and a happily ever after.
A dating coach who has been unlucky in love and her nemesis join forces when she needs a partner for a competition and he needs to distract his matchmaking mother. Both thought they were fine on their own, but this fauxmance has them rethinking their stance on romance.
I have been enjoying this series so much! I love the humor and warmth, and the romances all seem to surprise me in good ways. I don’t know how Hovland continues to sell me on these pairings. They should be awkward, but they turn out to be perfect.
Gavin was the ex-husband of the heroine from the pervious book, and Molly was said heroine’s friend. As if that’s not sticky enough, Molly held a bit of a grudge against Gavin for not always living up to his role as a father. But Hovland provided enough explanation for me with respect to his past marriage, and she allowed Gavin to grow as a father in this book, clearing the obvious obstacles in the path between Molly and Gavin. You know what? I ending up loving them together.
As with the other Mommy Wars books, there were great moments shared between the mom’s who support each other, lots of shenanigans with the kids wrapped up in a fabulous romance. But there were also those bits that evoked emotion from me. Both Molly and Gavin had me feeling my feels, but there was more of it with Molly. I really felt for her as the woman who always seemed to not be the one. All her first dates ended up being the last when she found those men their perfect matches. She was never the one chosen, and it was kind of heartbreaking to feel that yearning and loneliness from her.
Though my mommy days are far behind me, I find these books delightful. Hovland impressed me, once again, with the ability to buy into a union I was leery of and making me see how wonderful Molly and Gavin were together. I felt for Molly and her history of never being the one people choose, and that’s why this relationship was so satisfying. Lots of laughs and hijinks with a nice focus on friendship rounded out this book for me. Can’t wait till June for the next Mommy Wars book.
I thought for sure I was going to have problems with Gavin based on book 1 in this series but nope. He was great. Molly was a ball of insecurity who kept trying to pass her guy over to another woman without bothering to see if that’s something either of them were interested in. Also, spoilers: they both absolutely were not interested in rekindling anything.
I enjoyed this second book in the Mommy wars series. Fake dating and dating a friend's ex. Overall I enjoyed it but I didn't think it was quite as good as the first one about Rachel. I did like getting to know more about Gavin (Rachel's ex) and seeing him in a more sympathetic light. The book does a great job showing the challenges of single motherhood and how hard it can be to ask others' for help. I loved how each chapter starts with a quote about mom life. Great on audio and I'm excited to read the next book in the series. This one just felt a bit rushed and I wanted more from Molly and Gavin's relationship.
Molly is a single mom, dating coach and unlucky in love. Gavin is the ex-husband of Molly's best friend. Molly has been hating him on her friend's behalf for a long time.
This is the second stand-alone story from Christina's Mommy Wars books. While many of the characters are in the previous book, there is no need to have read it. This story is funny, emotional and interesting. The character backstories are entertaining as is their growth and the development of the relationships. I am in love with all of Christina's books. She is an engaging writer able to capture the sparks as well as the challenges of all relationships. I can hardly wait for the next book.
A witty mother attempting to navigate single parenting while discovering herself more deeply through a matchmaking competition? Sign me up.
Molly is a selfless-to-a-fault mother with an 8-year-old son named Ollie and a best friend named Rachel. Rachel has a complicated relationship history which ended up with her marrying her baby daddy and ex-husband Gavin’s brother. The end of her past marriage was amicable and Rachels relationship with Gavin is friendly as they co-parent their twin boys, who also happen to be best friends with Ollie, Molly’s son.
Molly and Gavin have an interesting relationship, as she blames him for why Rachel and his marriage failed. Molly considers Gavin to be lazy, uncommitted, and a failure of a dad who puts all responsibilities on to Rachel. When attending Rachel’s wedding at the start of the story, there is an accident where Gavin ends up saving Molly’s son and impressing her to the point of reconsidering her feelings for him. Molly’s job as an online dating guru leads her to a competition that forces her and Gavin to spend more time together, leading to something neither had planned for.
That is the start of this heart-warming and wholesome love story between Molly and Gavin as both are faced with external and internal challenges which they have to overcome before they can be with one another fully. I caught myself blushing and smiling like a goof many times while reading the interactions between our main characters. The banter is extremely comical and realistic which helps build the atmosphere and really holds my attention as a reader. The overall story left me with a feeling of warmth after crying my eyes out during the peak of the plot.
Gavin successfully raised the bar of my expectations in a man in this story. What starts out as a ‘frenemy’ relationship between him and Molly, turns into a beautiful partnership. Gavin has a hell of resilience to stick through the many attempts from Molly to self-sabotage their relationship. Gavin realizes early on that Molly is irresistible and that she is the one he wants, regardless of trying to be on a ‘relationship diet’. Gavin pushes Molly’s character developmentally and causes her to become more self-aware and realize that she is good enough - which really, what else could you want?
Molly is undeniably relatable for anyone with self-esteem issues. She gains this reputation amongst her friends and family that she is cursed and every first date she goes on, she ends up finding the perfect match for her date and they end up with a happily ever after, while she convinces herself that she’s okay alone. There is a clear difference between being okay alone and being lonely, which Molly uncovers with some help from Gavin and her loved ones. By the end, Molly has come to an understanding that depriving others of her company and her true self is taking away their choice in loving her back, which isn’t fair to her or them. Molly breaks down the illusion and becomes a stronger, more confident woman. In writing, Molly is a multi-faceted character that goes through deep emotional and mental development that is not unrealistic to something the reader might be experiencing and a very entertaining protagonist.
After reading, I decided that I definitely would read again and absolutely recommend it to anyone who is in need of a wholesome, warm novel!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received a digital ARC from NetGalley and Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Molly Princeton is an expert at dating, well, at other people dating. She has a popular vlog about dating, but she's been single for 8 years, since her husband and son's father decided the family life wasn't for him and left. She is fine being alone, self-sufficient. And she also is cursed. She never makes it past the first date because she inevitably sets up her date with the love of his life. But suddenly, her best friend's ex, the man she has loathed for years, saves her son from an ill-fated stunt on the lake and doesn't seem so awful anymore. Gavin Frank is on a relationship diet. He is taking a break. For years he was the man who couldn't be alone, but heard someone say, "before a person is ready to commit, they should be comfortable being alone." So, he is trying the single life. But when unexpected circumstances put him in close proximity to his ex-wife's best friend, he has trouble ignoring the attraction. Both are unsure if this is a road they should go down, but unable to turn away from the sparks flying. Will they take a chance? Can Molly break her curse? Is Gavin ready to be in a committed relationship?
I haven't read many books featuring single parents, especially single moms. This book portrayed "mom life", especially single mom life, so authentically I felt it was written for me, or women life me. Molly is a hot mess, but in the best possible way. She is working towards big goals and has built a good life for her and her son, without anyone else. I can completely relate to being self-sufficient, and how important it is to do those things for your kid and for yourself on your own. And I appreciated how Gavin was written, as a flawed man who yes, had messed up, at times in big ways, but had grown as a parent and as a person. It can be so easy as a parent to get lost in your kid's life, in their needs, and put your needs aside for a bit. It was good to see Molly's chosen family rally around her and push her, gently, toward taking care of herself for once. I loved this book and could not put it down. I am so excited to read the rest of the stories in this series! I would recommend this book to single parents, fans of enemies to lovers, and it is on the border between closed and open door romance.
This series is absolute gold for me! I just love the characters and their very relatable situations as middle aged mothers trying to make the best lives for themselves and their kid(s). And I really enjoy romantic comedy these days, which there's definite solid dose of. A great, light read.
Technically you could absolutely read this book on it's own, but I'm really glad to be reading the series in order because I already knew the main characters - Molly and Gavin - from the first book with Rachel. Molly is Rachel's best friend and mother to her twins best friend, Ollie. And then there's Gavin, Rachel's ex and father to the twins. Molly has - perhaps overly dutifully - hated Gavin for the way he fucked up as a dad and (ex) husband. The thing is, while you saw him screwing up in the first book with Rachel, you never get the sense he's a bad guy... just a good guy who's making a lot of mistakes. Molly has never given him a chance.
But through a series of events in There's Something About Molly, Molly gets to see exactly the truth of Gavin. He is a good guy - possibly a great guy - who's always been trying really hard and may finally be getting it right in respect to co-parenting with her best friend (who is now married to his brother... you really gotta read the first book LOL). I dare you not to fall head over heels for him along with Molly. I doubt you could do it. And then there's Molly, who has a tragic habit of finding the perfect person for someone else while on a first date. She matches her first dates up with someone else all the time.
This book had so much great humor, one of my favorite tropes (fake relationship), and solid characters. I'm loving these books and look forward to reading the next one. The narration is just as good -- Petrea Burchard gives a great performance, bringing the characters' personalities and the humor off the page and to life.
Author Christina Hovland’s latest novel, There’s Something About Molly, is a hilarious addition to her series of loosely-tied, standalone romantic comedies. Each book in this series features moms—some are single, some are married, and all are working hard to juggle family, home, and work. Ms. Hovland reflects back the lives of most of her readers, adds humor and a splash of romance for relatable, realistic characters and stories.
Molly is a relationship coach. She enters a matchmaking competition not knowing that to win she will need a boyfriend, and that sets up the premise for this fake-boyfriend romance trope. A dating coach who is single isn’t all that odd in the world of romantic fiction, but some backstory on her reticence to being in a relationship would have added a little depth to this otherwise delightful story. It was satisfying to see the character growth throughout the story arc. Fake boyfriend, Gavin, is a recycled secondary character from a prior book. In There’s Something About Molly, Gavin battles the reputation he created and tries to show friends, family and Molly that he is redeemable. The secondary characters add a lot to this story in terms of humor and relationship support.
Molly and Gavin’s journey is a fun, flirty read about the bumpy road to a HEA. The interactions with Molly’s children were funny, and Molly and Gavin’s relationship felt organic in its growth. I truly enjoy how author Hovland can turn a realistic romance story into a light, breezy romantic comedy.
Molly Molly what is wrong with you. She is trying to fix everybody up even at the cost of tearing herself apart. Molly and Gavin has been enemies from the beginning but now that the reasons for hating one another is slipping away they don't know how to treat eachother.
Gavin is Rachel's ex, Molly is Rachel's bestfriend now they are to fake date for her to win the match making contest, she has paired her landlady with the gentleman across the street.
I must say i was bored a lot, the book dragged out a lot, the characters were acting so silly the best part in the book was when Rachel and Travis was in the scene and the skittle up the nose scene.
I am happy for the couple, the new baby and wedding part was so cute. I loved Evelyn and het cat from the first book i would have really liked seeing more of them. 👍🏼❤
This was fun.
This was an enemies to lovers ron-com, with Molly, a single mom trying to win a dating contest. Not with her date, but with her landlady's date. Her 70 year old landlady, who had her sights on the local widower.
And it was all going well, until the gay guys who were also in the contest, brought in their cute couple, and Molly realized she needed to have someone of her own to spar with, and who better than the ex-husband of her best friend, whose kids were best friends with her kid, Gavin.
Got it. Right. A little complicated, but that makes for a crazy story.
Gavin is actually not that hate-able, and actually admits to his mistakes, which makes him a rather good character. Molly, on the other hand, keeps going from hating to not hating to not knowing what she wants.
My only problem with all this is that her son, and friends, do not seem to be 8 years old, more like teenagers, with their actions, but who knows, perhaps kids are doing stupid stuff earlier in life, these days.
Christine Hovland has come up with a series of romances that are all related, but can all be read separately. If you read the other books in her series, you will run into the same characters on the fringes of the story, which is rather fun, like being in the know..
I read this book because a friend who isn't usually into romance said I might like it. I made sure to read the first one in the series before I picked up this one. Unfortunately, the stories were very similar in content and voice despite the main characters being very different in personality. It was a bit disappointing, because I think Molly's voice and personality would have been fun to explore.
There's Something About Molly is the second book in the Mommy Wars series by Christina Hovland.
Molly is a dating coach that's a single mom. Molly is short on funds and after a little pressure from her landlord/friend she enters a matchmaking competition. To win, it looks like Molly might need a boyfriend, and who better to be her fake boyfriend than Gavin Frank, her best friend's ex. Gavin is down because he wants his mom to stop setting him up on dates. Will this fake relationship turn into something more?
I was afraid that I would not like Gavin going into this because of my bias towards him from the first book, but I was surprised how much I loved Gavin. He owned up to his mistakes and was doing his best to make ammends. Molly's insecurity and biased opinions made her a tougher sell for me. I liked how Gavin said that there are two Molly's, dating coach Molly and real Molly.
Overall, this was a fun story about motherhood, best friends, and finding love.
Another excellent book in the Mommy Wars series!
Molly and Gavin are a couple that shouldn't happen. His ex-wife is one of her best friends and Molly honestly doesn't like Gavin that much. I also didn't love Gavin after the first book in the series, but he did start to win me over a bit by the end. Here, however, I ended up really liking them both. There's some nice character growth and they had a lot of chemistry together.
I was so curious how they would make it work, and their relationship development was nicely done. I also liked seeing them both with their kids. So often kids are just an afterthought or ridiculously wise for their age. Molly's son and Gavin's twins were funny and entertaining.
This can be read as a standalone, but the first book was also really great. I can't recommend Christina's books enough!
I read this book in less than 24 hours, because once I started, I really couldn't stop. I loved Molly, I loved Rachel, and I certainly loved Gavin. He was the 'certified' bad boy, but as always, was just misunderstood. This was such a good romance book, really well written, with just enough spice for us all to look forward to!
