His kiss knocked her off her feet. But the next day… he hated her.
Pop rock princess, Ellie Walker is an expert at navigating the world of rock and roll. She’s the sunshine girl who befriends even the wildest of rockstars and fans.
Except when it comes to Tate Hawkins.
The grumpy, annoyingly sexy drummer of Perfectly Broken tilted her world once, but now spends his free time shooting her with dagger eyes.
She has no idea why, and she certainly doesn’t care. The kiss was a mistake, and she’s over it. She’ll just keep avoiding him and wooing his best friends and bandmates until he’s red in the face.
But when a member of Perfectly Broken drops out of a headlining tour, the studio scrambles to find a replacement. Their best option--Ellie.
One thing is for sure, tour busses and stages aren’t big enough for both of them. With every moment they’re forced to spend together, sparks fly, secrets unravel, and tension borders on irresistible.
But when the tour ends, will they give love a chance, or will their fiery relationship explode?
Perfect for readers who love a good mix of sweet and sizzle, toe-curling kisses, swoony book boyfriends, and a happily ever after.
I live in Utah with my husband, our four kids, our dog who thinks she is human, and a rather suspicious cat. A fantasy anthology which included my work in 2018 hit the USA Today Bestseller's list. I have written several fantasy and romance novels and adore both genres!

Okay, this was the most healthy book I've read in forever.

Literally so happy I read this book. Was it a romance? Well yeah bit it was a lot more than just romance too. This book delt with some heavy topics and there was a lot to overcome for these characters.
I have a lot of thoughts about this book but I need more time to get through them all. I will say that I related to Tate a lot.
This is a well written book with strong characters in Ellie and Tate. They have many obstacles to overcome to get to their HEA. The author brings tons of emotions along with the drama and weaves an interesting story. I enjoyed and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I enjoyed jumping into this one, it picks up where the first book leaves off. But can stand on its own. Tate and Ellie have fun chemistry, the enemies-to-lovers transition was handled well and believable.
Content Rated PG Romance: Kissing Language: None Violence: Very mild Other: Talk of hard childhood, anxiety
This book had some deeper story lines to it. It has the romance part but it also dealt with homelessness, verbal abuse, panic attacks, self sabotage and more. I liked that our leading lady Ellie understood the power of communication and that no relationship can truly last with out it. Tate was a product of life kicking him in the gut while growing up and there’s a fall out to that when you get older. Even if you become some big famous rock star. Life circumstances have consequences.
The romance between the two was well paced, with some good dashes of swoon! I think however my favorite part of books is the intense bond between these band mates. It’s even deeper then brotherhood. How they’re always there for each other, the support, the love, it’s just so fun to read. The characters in these books are exceptional.
Unfortunately DNF. I got halfway through and IT was so boring 😴 Also Tate (H) was hot and cold and pissed me off, like I got he had past issues (whatever they were, it wasnt even revealing his past, AND I WAS HALFWAY) But he was just immature. It was like in school, when the teacher told you a boy is just annoying you cause he likes you. A CROCK OF SHIT. Anyways he was immature af and Ellie (h) literally was boring and Mediocre, she gave me NOTHING, literally side character vibes. 😐🙄 And the h from the first book was irritating af, more so then in her own book. Anyways 😑 I don't know why this annoyed me so much, but it did. ✋️ The only reason I even started this series was to read the next book in this series, the third book which is a single parent romance. Hopefully that one is better. 😭
Our Broken Song by Emily Childs is an absolutely FANTASTIC contemporary romance. This book has everything a girl could want in a great love story. The pacing is exceptionally fast — I finished this book in one sitting. I truly did not want to put this book down. The storyline is excellent; I love a good rock’n’roll romance. And the characters are perfect. Ellie is one cool chick. She is definitely the kind of person one would want in their corner. Yes, she is creative and fun and fierce, but what I love the most about her character is her loyalty to her friends and family, and how she refuses to let Tate hide from his demons. Ellie is such a supportive character. We would all do well to have an Ellie in our lives. Tate is the BEST hero ever. Oh, how my heart hurt deeply for his character. In fact, I needed tissue for a good chunk of this read. Tate’s childhood was deplorable and has caused some relationship issues in his adulthood. He also suffers from debilitating anxiety attacks and thoughts that spiral irrationally out of control. I’ve never related to a male character as much as I have Tate. I feel that Childs did a phenomenal job illustrating the pain and torture that out-of-control thoughts and anxiety attacks inflict on a person. This book is not all heartbreak though. No, no, no! This story has some seriously steamy moments for sure. The chemistry between Ellie and Tate is electric, and I’m surprised they don’t both catch on fire whenever they’re in the same room together. LOL!
Our Broken Song is a homerun by author Emily Childs. This story is unputdownable and unforgettable. I am sorry my time with these characters is over, but I totally look forward to reading book 3 in the series, Our Lost Song. I know it will be as amazing as books 1 and 2 are! If you are in the mood for a well-written, super-steamy contemporary romance with substance, then I highly recommend you check out Our Broken Song today.
I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on September 29, 2021, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I was not expecting to get to emotionally involved in a book like this. This is the first book I have read by this author. This was a story about two artists who had a passing attraction to each other but kept each other at arms length for years before this story. They come together again because Tate is in a band called Perfectly Broken and their bass player left them unexpectedly in the middle of a tour schedule. Ellie is another artist with the same company who happens to be a bass player that can fill in until the band can find someone else. So Ellie and Tate have this love/hate thing going on and it takes a while for them to actually talk to each other and get to some understanding where they can even like each other. I thought the way they described Ellie's dyslexia was interesting. I don't know much about it, so sad that this is something people have to overcome. Then the one that really got me was the background on Tate's life, it was so sad! The way he was brought up, gets into a home where he is cared for, the school, everything. So sad! I was happy that by the end of the story things take a turn for the better and he has a way to overcome some issues. I am happy that the two main characters find a way to be together. I appreciate that the story is a clean story, but I felt like maybe there could have been just a bit more detail included to show the couple was moving forward in their relationship. I kind of felt like all of a sudden it was implied they were sleeping in the same bed, but no confirmation of anything. Maybe I missed it, who knows? I saw that I missed the first book, and will definitely read that as well as the next novel in the series.
okay, so. going into it, i kind of thought i would love this more than i did, so i was maybe a little disappointed. i thoughthe beginning was pretty strong and interesting, but the second third of it didn’t really deliver as much as i had expected it to. then again, the last 50 to 60 pages were quite enjoyable so i’m feeling somewhat conflicted.
here’s some things i didn’t like so much: 1. tate was really rude to ellie for the first half of the book and even though i knew why and kind of understood, it was just a bit too much for me to truly be able to excuse it. i mean, it wasn’t THAT bad, but like, he was pretty hurtful in a not-so-funny way sometimes and when it comes to someone i’m looking at with a relationship in mind? i have a zero tolerance, so that fact that it wasn’t ”THAT bad” is not enough for me. —> i did like how ellie actually took it up with him at one point, but also that brings me to pointer number 1,5.: why did ellie just take it for the most part and still go on in her pov about how much she was still infatuated with him? ick 2. the pacing felt a bit off to me somehow? if you’d ask me, i wouldn’t really be able to tell you how i think it should’ve been, but i feel like at some point it did feel a bit rushed (it is a quite short book so i guess that’s to be expected? idk) 3. i had expectations for the story and some plot points based on the synopsis, but i feel like most of what i was looking forward to didn’t happen. or at least, it wasn’t shown the way i had expected. and yeah ig, my bad for placing expectations, but when some of them are literally written in the description of the book, i think i wasn’t exactly wrong to expect to see them in the actual book. 4. i felt like i was robbed of the band action and scenes of them having fun touring and stuff, but i guess that’s one of the minor issues.
i did like the representation of dyslexia and other difficulties kids (and adults alike) experience in learning and just their day-to-day lives, and also mental health issues like anxiety and panic attacks, and societal issues like (youth) homelessness and some mentions towards poverty. tate was really good with the youth shelter kids and just in general very attentive to his small circle of loved ones and i loved that side of him.
i thought tate was also a very good example of ”you have to learn to love yourself before anyone else can”, not because no one else would be capable of falling in love with you, but because your walls wouldn’t let them until you love and trust yourself. but i liked how at the end he actually realized that he had to work on himself a bit first if he really wanted their relationship to work. (cuz another issue i had with him at times was how he never seemed to fight for ellie the way ellie did for him)
I really liked the characters but this book was a lot. Plus why not put details of the night they mer in the actual story versus having to click a link for it I do not click links. If I bought the book, I would feel completely cheated.
This is a sweet romance, it was refreshing not to have a bunch of naked scenes. Particularly when I find some things placed in them completely unsexy and want to gag. However, where is the balance. One scene with some passion would not hurt. Even implying the act and actions and not going into explicit detail would have been engaging.
I do like that she focused on emotional and social connections. These characters had layers.
Again some balance in books would be great.
I do recommend this book
It was longer then it needed to be but not to a point where I couldn't finish or grew weary of the characters.. HEA on many fronts and her storylines are cute and fun. I want to read more about their brother and his intern. Her segways leading to next book are exciting. Couldn't wait to read about Tate and Ella.
It wasn't as exciting as I pictured but it was good. You really get to know the characters. If there were more passion it would have been rated higher. Not of the sexual naked nature but implied or more want for one another physically.
Not having more passion in a book makes it dry for me
The mini-bad, is that I found this super angsty. As in, it felt really angsty and overwrought. The pacing also felt a little clunky. Tate and Ellie went from having real communicating issues to sorting it out like overnight. This in itself wasn't bad per se, I'm just listing why I enjoyed this less than the first installment in the series.
What I was absolutely living for though, was the self-respect.
Tate has issues that he's somewhat working through and it bothers him that he's drawn to Ellie. Rather than confront these feelings, he's essential mean and rude to Ellie to keep her offside (real mature).
For her part, Ellie is also drawn to Tate, and doesn't understand why he treats her the way he does as she would like it if it was different. The great thing was despite all these feelings, she never feels like she has to put up with Tate's treatment because she's attracted to him, and her friends also don't suggest she overlooks his treatment because of this same attraction.
I recently read another book where the opposite of this was done (where the hero crossed so many lines, and her family was all, yeah but he's hot sooo.) and that bothered me soo much. So happy to see proper boundaries in this book.
I really liked it, I did find it felt long, and as previously stated angsty but I'll be back for the next installment.

This book deals with a lot of anxiety, not being good enough, emotional abuse, and more. It isn't my favorite of the series but it is honestly a really good book.
*SPOILERS!!!*
Ellie Walker is touring with the band for a few months while they find a new bassist. However, the feud between her and Tate is still very much alive. It starts slow with helping each other out to giving meaningful gifts. Their enemy-ship turns into a friendship with a few...looks.
My least favorite part is when Tate is overcome by his anxiety and panic. It hurts because he doesn't see his self-worth and I feel bad for him. Ellie does too, but she is trying to get him to open up. Everything is resolved and the last few chapters are with Bridge's wedding and the start of Tate and Ellie's happily ever after.
Ellie Walker: wonderful friend, sister, and aunt. She loves the band but can't stand Tate. She has problems reading (dyslexia) and doesn't tell anyone.
Tate: big softy with anxiety and self-doubt. Loves his friends and food. Like really loves food. He also has a money-spending problem (he doesn't like spending anything). He pushes people away and tends to panic with any change in his life. This all stems from his childhood and the trauma he endured throughout it.
Very cute 2nd book in in a 4book series. I enjoyed this one more, I think i like my character more damaged so i tend to gravitate more towards those types. The first book in the series was good but too cute maybe.. 🤷🏻♀️
This was about Eleanor “Ell” and Tate. Ell has her own family issues but they pale in comparison to Tates. He is a drummer for a very famous band and is very guarded and his band is his only real family. Ell is also very musical in her own right and Tate sees her as someone who could destroy his carefully arranged peace. They dance around each other for most the book in some very entertaining banter and then she eventually brakes though his crusty exterior to his soft center and they live HEA with patience and therapy. I also enjoy the band family and getting to find out more about the characters from the first book.
I plant to read the rest of the series.
🔈= listened to this, same Narrators from first book so it was east to listen to. 🫑= still no spice, hinted at and lots of kissing but nothing else which is disappointing for a rock star book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️= i did give one more star this book because i liked it a bit better even with no spice. ®️= rented it from Hoopla Library app ⚠️= addiction, homeless, childhood trauma, panic attacks.
Off to next 📖 book in the series

1. “One night, one kiss. That’s all it took for the punk rock princess to dig her hooks in me. It’s pathetic. I hate her for it. I want her for it even more.” — Chapter 3: Our Broken Song by Emily Childs
2. “Like my dad always warned me, attraction can only get you so far. The heart and guts need to take you the rest of the way. I wouldn’t call the mad dash to leave his hotel room a walk of shame, more a walk of preserving self-respect.” — Chapter 10: Our Broken Song by Emily Childs
3. “He thinks I’m joking. I’m not. I’d love to be good for Ellie. I’d love to be her soft place to fall, to be the guy who gives her all of himself. But I’m not. I’m a briar bush with inch long thorns. Hardly soft. Hardly safe.” — Chapter 14: Our Broken Song by Emily Childs
4. “‘Hawkins,’ she says, her voice laced with venom. ‘Princess.’ I turn away before I do something stupid, like confessing I didn’t get her out of my system. Not even close. I want her more than ever.” — Chapter 14: Our Broken Song by Emily Childs
5. “I invested into being a wife, a mother. Cooking, music, fashion. Hair. I’m a jack of all trades but a master at none.” — Chapter 28: Our Broken Song by Emily Childs
This book just makes me smile so much. I loved Tate and Ellie so much. They had such a sizzle to their relationship, but they were such good people.
The love/hate relationship in this book is one of the best enemies to lovers tropes out there. I love how they really want each other, but Tate has his walls so high up. But, he can't help but fall for Ellie. I enjoyed him as a swoony book boyfriend. He is extremely sweet and is such a big teddy bear. I love how he cares for Ellie.
Ellie is a really awesome heroine. She has so much spunk and doesn't take any crap. She genuinely cares and that is something that I love. She pushes Tate, but isn't a doormat. And, her relationship with her brother is awesome.
The secondary characters are awesome. I loved seeing Bridge and Alexis get together. You get to see more of the band. The family dynamic between the characters is awesome. I can't wait for the next story in the series.
In summary, this book is sweet. But, with tons of sizzle. It has some of the best kissing scenes in sweet romance. Go check out book by this author.
*I have received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Damn. Another one of those Hate to love stories in which the hero loves the heroine but can't really admit his feelings cause he is broken on the inside. Hach... I think I am so over those...
In this one the two MCs spent a night together three years ago and since then, the hero has been all aloof and they have basically hated each other.
Now, she is in his band and the hero continues to hurt her - with his words and with his actions. Bit just once, either... Hach... and the heroine pretends to resist but doesn't really when it counts.
Except for the disappointing hero, I was fond of the story, the writing style, the emotions in this book. I liked them as a couple, sure, but everything before was too much for me. Plus, everyone adored the hero but he was so mean to her all the time. How can you adore someone like that? But yeah... would have liked to see him redeem himself more. We don't really get a lot of time with them as a couple.
Tate is a drummer who had a rough childhood. He swore off love as a result and has a hard time trusting new people, until a chance meeting with Ellie. They fight with each other as each denies the growing attraction. Things come to a head when Ellie temporarily joins Tate’s band.
I liked the representation of learning disabilities and mental health challenges. I liked the that there wasn’t really a third act breakup. They seemed to grow together in a really healthy way. I just wish they had written some music together.
This book is an easy rock star read. I binged it in one sitting. It’s a very sweet enemies to lovers who make sweet music. It’s a clean closed door story. I love the band’s brotherhood and a true found family.
While not absolutely necessary, I recommend having read the first book to understand the band and other characters. I’m looking forward to the next story.
I mean I love Bridger but Tate just burrowed in my heart!!!
"I don't like Tate Hawkins. He can drum himself right out of my life." "He's awful." "He's alluring." "His kisses are milk chocolate wrapped in gold." "He's the worst." "And now - I'm in his band."
This has that push and pull of an enemies to lovers that I just love! The banter is spot on! And Tater Tot is perfection! I love his obsession with food and being cheap!! Omgsh I just want to hug him!! The anxiety attacks - this was real life messy and I'm so here for it!!! Ellie is fabulous and strong and funny!! Great writing that I couldn't put down. The characters are so relatable and loveable. Once again I love Ellie's relationship with Finn! I love that the story goes into their family relationships and their friendships - it's not just the romantic ones!! LOVE this series!!!! I can't recommend this more!!
This was a perfect, phenomenal blend of humor and serious issues.
Tate was everything. He wants to take care of everyone. He’s really just a mother hen. He’s had a hard life and I just want to hug him and never let go.
Ellie. Oh Ellie, where do I begin?! She had a great family but still had struggles that were not diagnosed (this didn’t receive true help) until senior year of high school; so all of her formative years. She is so strong and compassionate. I want to be like Ellie when I grow up.
This band, I want them all in my life. I want them to be my friends, my people, my family.
3.5 stars rounded down to 3 for the simple reason that the storyline declined throughout the book. The beginning of this book started out really well and had me intrigued with Tate’s character, however, I was really disappointed in how fast the relationship developed. Someone like Tate would not go from pretending to hate Ellie to protect himself to immediately getting into a relationship with her. This just didn’t seem realistic to me, and I would’ve much preferred seeing Tate and Ellie become friends and Tate letting Ellie in slowly. And yes, I know he still didn’t completely let her in once they did fall in love, but the fact that Tate let himself be with Ellie and open himself up to that hurt so quickly after he stopped “hating her” just seemed extremely rushed to me.

I love that there was mostly a good line of communication in this book and that there wasn't an absolute ton of angst. Tate deciding to act like he hated her after the kiss was a little weird but I like that he admitted the "why" didn't really have as much to do with her as with his deep feelings. Also kudos to the author for the way she handled anxiety. As someone with severe anxiety, it was a pleasant read and the support system these guys have is amazing - especially once Lance left.
The one thing that surprised me after reading the whole series was how their physical relationship was hinted at more. The other ones I kind of felt like they lived in a world with no sex but I definitely didn't feel that way here.
I'm missing the spice/steam and the escape from reality. Wow! This book had a lot of background and depth for the characters in general, it didn't give the escape from reality very well. The angst and hurtful pasts were an up and down emotional roller coaster at times and that's just not what I'm looking for in books personally.
I will say this one seemed a bit better written than the first one and the characters are still interesting and fun to read about, I just want the steam and a bit less of the hurtful reality. There wasn't a good wrap up of gramps either. With the bonus scene, that would have been nice to see. Perhaps a reformed gramps in there or something since that was the direction they were heading.
This book reminds me that fear can make us do some out of character things and hold us back from what truly could make us happy. I love Ellie and Tate’s love story. They have very different family backgrounds but both shaped them into who they are. With Ellie joining the band for a temporary gig, the forced proximity of them made this book truly just scrumptious. I might have binge read this and have zero regrets about it. I laughed at their banter. I wanted to give huge hugs when they were vulnerable with each other. I wanted to sucker punch Tate when he retreated within himself (again).
This book gave some very real life complexities and dilemmas people face. I am just so happy that they get to face them going forward together.
Wow, my heart has been stolen by these two, and their fantastic tale. Tate (aka Hawkeye) is a drummer in the band Perfectly Broken, while Ellie is a talented solo artist and main target of Tate's glares and snarky comments. They have to deal with one another, when Ellie is dragged into the band for their tour. Will they end up killing each other before the tour ends? I loved the broken Tate, who has more to him than it first seems, and Ellie is more than up to the challenge of Tate. I loved the feisty Ellie, her habit of standing up for those she loves, and her determination.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the first time I’m reading this author and I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. I love enemies to lovers’ romance and then when you top it off with rock romance it becomes a winner in my book.
Tate is the drummer for Perfectly Broken with a sad past. Ellie has her own issues she’s had to deal with and is now going on tour with Perfectly Broken since their bass player left them.
They are two people that will have you rooting for them throughout. Now I need to go back and read the first book in this series because I want to read more from this author and I'm a rock romance junkie.
2 stars, DNF at 55% I feel so bad for not liking this, especially because I loved book one and I’m a big fan of enemies to lovers. Alas, “Our Broken Love Song” just didn’t do it for me. I think I liked the beginning, but then the whole thing just started getting repetitive. They’d have a ✨moment✨, he’d ruin it, they avoid each other, he does something nice for her, and we start all over again. I got bored real fast. I totally understand how difficult it can be to trust when being let down all your life, but after a while, I couldn’t help but think “Ellie should just give up. This isn’t working.”
If you are looking for a rockstar romance that features a anxiety ridden drummer and a smart mouth musician, you will love this! There is tons of yummy tension and Tate is really the biggest sweetheart.
I feel like this book hits home, as I also married a drummer with anxiety. It takes a lot of understanding and unconditional love to make the relationship work and Ellie did a wonderful job at representing.
There is a lot of miscommunication through out this story, as Tate doesn't want to show that side of himself to Ellie but you can feel the love from the pages. It was really well written and thoughtful.
In the extremely well written and riveting Our Broken Song, I finally learned why Tate hates Ellie. Ms. Childs does an outstanding job with this series - from the band's name (Perfectly Broken) to the angst suffered by the characters. I love Tate's and Ellie's journeys as they overcome their broken pasts and find their soul mates. Tate is such a good man, determined to help the kids in a local shelter, and all anonymously. Everyone (except maybe her sister) loves Ellie now but school was a nightmare. Ms. Childs wraps everything up so well -the ending is just perfect!
Our drummer and bassist extraordinaire! Tate and Ellie were an awesome pair as they worked through many issues while becoming a couple. It was nice to see in spite of many couples just giving up because it was just to hard to deal with. Tate’s issue was nothing unusual as many people have it although they don’t like to admit it. I’m glad he humbled himself and went the extra mile for Ellie. Also, I was thrilled seeing the cameo appearance of our favorite Irish man, Colm, as he was talking to certain members of the band about designing a couple of houses. And his wife, Jace, is pregnant! Yay!
This is my absolute favourite genre rockstars, bands etc and this is Tate’s and Ellie’s story. The bassist for Perfectly Broken has left the band halfway through their tour so Finn who knows that Ellie can play any guitar talks her into playing for the band, there’s one thing that Ellie isn’t happy about and that’s Tate they don’t like each other and there’s a reason for that but I will let you find out for yourself. This is a fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read.
