Blue Haven, North Carolina is now home for food blogger Veronica Walker and her dog, Scout. She’s a dog walker, and one of her client’s, Wanda, (who has a tiny Yorkie), owns the Savory Egg Cafe in town where there’s always something yummy cooking. Wanda has an attitude that turns people off so she’s not the most popular person in town. Veronica inherited her grandmother’s old farmhouse and moved there until she can decide what she wants to do next. Stumbling across a corpse in the Savory Egg, Veronica meets handsome Special Agent Declan Grant. Gemma, the vivacious best friend from New York comes to visit and along with Declan, the two women begin to narrow down clues to strike out the killer.
the murder mystery is very good. I enjoyed Veronica and Gemma—they are fun. I’m looking forward to seeing the characters grow in future stories.
I absolutely loved this book! The writing was perfect with a great balance of adding enough details to make you feel like you’re there, without going overboard and pulling you out of the story. I can’t wait for the next book in this series to see what Veronica is up to and what happens with Declan. I DEFINITELY need to see more of him! If you like cozy mysteries, this book is for you!
Veronica Walker inherits her grandmother's farmhouse so she packs up her life in New York & moves to a charming little coastal town in North Carolina. Blue Haven is a picturesque place with Hallmark vibes & there's never a worry of anything unsavory happening. In fact, almost everyone in the community still keeps their doors unlocked. There's plenty of adorable stores, gourmet foods & everyone knows your business & quick to dish it out as well!
But now, just in time for the annual baking competition, the reigning champion ends up deceased. Enter the towns newest & most handsome detective-Special Agent Declan Grant. Of course, Veronica finds the body so she is desperate to jump in there to help solve this one in order to ease the growing fear in the community.
When Declan realizes that he isn't going to keep her out of the investigation no matter how hard he tries, he gives in & starts to actually enjoy her company as well as her excellent sleuthing skills! But can he keep her safe as the clues start stacking up?
I thoroughly enjoyed this adorable cozy mystery! The storyline is so fun! The imagery from all the little details describing the quaint little town & its inhabitants would make anyone want to become a resident of Blue Haven! Not to mention plenty of laugh out loud moments throughout! There is so much going on in the story to keep you interested as well including a secret blogger with fun little blog posts, scrumptious sounding food, a quiche baking competition on the beach, an egg scandal, an investigation as well as a budding new romantic relationship. Of course we can't forget the quirky & feisty best friend Gemma! She deserves a story all her own!
It's a pretty quick read with less than 200 pages but the story doesn't stop there. The second book in the series, Blueburied Waffles, continues on with the same characters so I'm excited to head back into Blue Haven again! So if sweet, clean, cozy mysteries are something you enjoy, this is definitely one you won't want to miss!
Break-In and Eggs is the perfect cozy mystery to end my summer with. I loved everything about it. Blue Haven is a beachfront town in North Carolina where the most newsworthy action is between the local bakeries and cuisine. Veronica Walker, a recent New Yorker now relocated resident spends her days enjoying the local delicacies and reviewing them on her blog under a pen name. When the town's first and only murder happens, Veronica can't help but get involved. The recently deceased is one of her dog walking clients, after all! I won't share anymore about this charming read except that it was really fun getting lost in this small town adventure! I felt like it was Gilmore Girls meets Aurora Teagarden and I loved every bit of it! Well done on your cozy mystery debut, Courtney! I can't wait to read your next cozy mystery, Blueburied Waffles!!!
big big thank you to Courtney for sending me an e-copy of her book in return for an honest review 🤍
this is the first book in a murder mystery series based in Blue Haven. secret food blogger Veronica Walker has recently relocated to the small town, when the town’s first murder happens.
I was mostly invested in the love interest Declan (sorry, it’s just the romance lover inside me)! I really enjoyed the friendship between Veronica and Gemma, her best friend who came to visit from New York - it reminded me of some of my closest friendships 💕
cozy murder mystery books are not something i have delved into before. this was my first time reading one and i enjoyed it but it definitely isn’t my go-to genre.
although i didn’t love this book, if you’re a fan of cosy murder mysteries, i would recommend giving it a go if you like the sound of this one!
Not bad. Not good enough for me to want to read the next (unless it shows up in a free Kindle books site, maybe), but not bad.
Typical author's assumptions that one can make a living with a food blog and a dog-walking gig (and especially when the hours for the dog-walking gig meander based on what chapter you're reading). And a NY editor who's willing to make a job offer without an interview, and hold it while awaiting a response? There's a true need to put reality aside to make this story work.
It *is* refreshing to see an instant rapport with the detective. In most stories of the genre, the protagonist and the detective are at odds at least most of the way through the solve. Kudos for deviating from the overworked norm.
Wonderful seaside setting with very likable characters. Dog walker and secret food blogger Veronica finds a dead body and begins her sleuthing adventure along with her visiting friend Gemma. They are a great pair, balancing each other. Add in the charming detective, Declan and it all made for a wonderful read. Plenty of suspects because the victim seemed to go out of her way to make enemies. Good mystery and I look forward to the next adventure.
Now here is a great example of cozey mystery with a dash of murder, colorful characters, friends that like a mystery to to solve in a small town and a new cop in town to add a blossoming romance. This is definitely a two thumbs up 👍 kind of cozey mystery.😀Kat
A fun read with lots of excitement over the death of the best quiche contest winner the past 10 years. Liked all the characters. The new detective who had to deal with Veronica and her best friend's investigating. Wonderful ending.
Great characters and background information. Blue Haven sounds like a place I would like to visit. I never would have guessed who was involved with the death. I really like Von’s blog too.
Fun young adult cozy with food and pets. Veronica is a dog walker with a mystery food reviewer blog. She finds a custdead and sets out to find a murderer
