Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers

Rate this book
In Self Love Poetry, Godfred explores concepts like authenticity, surrender, resilience, gratitude, believing in yourself, and of course, love, through 100 pairs of poems, each dedicated to a central theme. On the left side of the book are "thinker" poems that light up the analytical, more literal, left side of the brain, and on the right side are companion "feeler" poems that speak to the creative, more emotional right side of the brain. Combined, the poems electrify the mind, body and soul through a completely unique poetry experience that inspires each of us to embrace all parts of ourselves. This empowering poetry book will not only engage you to think and feel, but will make you feel seen, show you how to love yourself, and encourage you to seek out the hope and beauty in the world … and in yourself. It’s the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love, especially after a most difficult year.

Melody Godfred is a poet, author, and speaker who is passionate about empowering people to love themselves and transform their lives.

Melody started her career as a litigation attorney, but soon realized a disconnect between her work and essence, so she left a prestigious position at a top law firm to launch Write In Color, her personal branding and career development company. She quickly established her reputation as a leader in the career development space. Through her work as a coach exploring the narratives of hundreds of women, and after undergoing several life transitions herself -- including motherhood -- Melody discovered a common trend: in their quest to fuel their careers and relationships, women were increasingly sacrificing their authentic selves, happiness and well-being.

Melody needed a reminder to choose herself each and every day and believed that other women did too, so she created the Self Love Pinky Ring, a self-commitment ring for women, and launched Fred and Far, her self love movement and community. Her ring and community instantly went viral around the world (Vogue, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, and more), and started a global conversation around self love.

In 2020, Melody published Self Love Poetry: For Thinkers & Feelers, a collection of 200 poems that instantly became and remains a bestseller. One of her poems (“I thought 2020 would be the year I got everything I wanted. Now I know 2020 is the year I appreciate everything I have.”) was shared on social media by Oprah Magazine just before the Thanksgiving Holiday, quickly going viral and eventually reaching hundreds of millions of people, in addition to earning a feature on Today with Hoda and Jenna. In early 2021, Melody signed a book deal with Andrews McMeel Publishing, re-releasing Self Love Poetry and publishing two more books, The ABCs of Self Love, an illustrated guided journal, and The Shift: Poetry for a New Perspective. Her latest collection, Moon Garden: Poetry for Manifestation is coming out on October 21, 2025.

In 2025, Melody began leading moon circles blending poetry, movement, meditation and more.

Melody is a trusted thought leader whose advice has been featured on Inc., Forbes, Huff Post, Bustle, PayScale, Motherly, Mashable, The Muse, and Fairygodboss, among others. Melody was a featured speaker at the Teen Vogue Summit and The Massachusetts Conference for Women, and has led personal branding and operational workshops for Farfetch, Murad, The YWCA, and more. She received her law degree from Loyola Law School with honors.

Melody lives in Los Angeles, CA with her husband Aaron Godfred and three kids, twin daughters Stella and Violet and son Teddy.

Her latest book, The Shift: Poetry for a New Perspective was released on September 27, 2022 (Andrews McMeel Publishing) and is a Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Best Poetry Book of 2022.

I found it really interesting that she would basically write one poem twice - a version for the "thinkers" and the "feelers". I've never seen that before and really enjoyed it!

"Choosing yourself doesn’t make self care easier.
It takes WORK to show up for yourself every day.
But it does make sacrificing, neglecting, doubting, and compromising yourself harder.
You simply won’t settle for that anymore."

"Loving yourself first
doesn’t mean
loving anyone else less."

"I felt my feelings, and my heart said thank you.
I spoke my truth, and my mind said thank you.
I moved my energy, and my body said thank you.
And because I did, my world said thank you, too."

"Together we will raise
a generation of
self-loving women.
Imagine the possibilities."

"When everything feels like
simply too much,
remember this:
there are parts of you
that were designed
to handle precisely
these moments."

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Self Love Poetry is a beautifully written and put together book of poems created uniquely for the thinkers and feelers amongst us. I found so many of these poems relatable and the book sparked many emotions as I read through it. This is a unique book of poems and I love that the main theme was about self love which is something that is so important but what many of us neglect to do and have for ourselves.
I definitely recommend this book to all.

A lot of this book seemed more like twitter aphorism after the author has a couple glasses of wine rather than carefully composed poem.

I have a hard time saying it's good, but also a hard time saying it's bad. Initially I was going to give it 2 stars, but there are some bits that seem like the start of something good. That is to say, some of the poems have some descriptive elements to them that are lovely, but a large portion are just short observations without much use of language, poetic elements, or nuance of thought.

There is an excessive amount of repetition in a lot of it, and it's not done in an artful way.

That's not to say it's not inspiring in some ways, but a lot of it is just not interesting poetry.

First and first, I'd like to express my gratitude to Netgalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this copy.

Without a question, this is one of my favorite poetry collections of 2021.
The major concept of this poetry is SELF LOVE, and I love how the words were elegantly shown and poetry was created from it. Furthermore, this book introduces a novel concept of thinkers and feelers.

I read this book at a time when I needed it most. My dad gave this book to me for my birthday, and on the inside cover, he wrote, "I wish you were able to see yourself the way the rest of the world see's you." As a person who struggles deeply with a lack of self-confidence, self-acceptance, and self-love, this book resonated with me. This is a collection of poetry that I know I will be revisiting as I continue on my personal journey. I loved the duality of "thinkers" and "feelers." Melody Godfred's idea to format each poem in two different ways to correspond with the left side of the brain and the right side of the brain was phenomenal.

It was beautiful and hugged my heart. ❤️

,,Turning down help is paying full price for something that’s on sale.’’

,,If you love yourself even half as much as you loved your crush in junior high that you never even spoke to, you’ll be well on your way.’’

,, I used to feel like a boat, completely at the mercy of an ocean of thoughts that beat against me one wave at a time. Now I realize I am not the boat. I am the ocean.’’

Learn to speak your dreams.
Let them spill onto pages.
Fill up quiet rooms.
Taste your dreams
as they roll around in your mouth,
awakening dormant taste buds
like the first berries of summer.
Know them, inside out and outside in,
dreams so vivid you can hear them.
A steady hum of hope in your ears.

The setup of this poetry prose collection was unique. One side was for thinkers and the other side was for feelers. However, she kept reiterating the same point for 200+ pages. Had the poet incorporated other themes, it would have kept my interest. A bit tedious to get through tbh.

I really didn’t like this book. I felt that there was no thought put into this book. I felt myself getting so mad at how each poem had no thought put into them. I could write better poetry. Not reading any more books by this author.

wow, just wow.

This book is honestly something that I have really enjoyed, the poems really helped me come to understand myself and things i need to work on. If you’re having trouble finding who you are, your self worth and how to love yourself this is a beautiful read. Absolutely wonderful ❤️

Some of my favourites :

I thought this would be the year I get everything I want. Now i know this is the year I appreciate everyone I have.

If your hard work feels unseen, stop making it look so effortless

Loving yourself first doesn’t mean loving anyone else less

Your worth isn’t their choice. It’s yours

How to free your mind : write down the things you need to remember for the future and write down the things you need to let go of from the past

Remember when you thought you couldn’t and then you did? Now is the time to channel that energy

The sun is still the sun whether it rises or it sets, and the moon is still the moon whether it is full or a crescent

This book helped. The poems are healing and reassuring. They feel like home. I found some of the poems repetitive, but I still expect to return to this book often. Be sure to read the words aloud.

This poetry collection has made it to the top 10 books of the year for me. This collection was very inspiring and made me feel like someone else understands where I am coming from when I struggle with my anxiety and depression. When you feel down and feel like nothing is going right for you I highly recommend that you pick up this uplifting collection of poetry and escape into a world that you might not know you need at the time!

Poetry that allows you to love yourself is the best in my opinion. Godfred weaves compelling and complex poems that really tear at your heart strings. If you have ever question your worth, your love for yourself and yourself, these poems are made for you. With a side by side comparison of thinking vs feeling.

*Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely a heart-warming, wholesome collection of thoughts around self-love and acceptance, that could certainly cheer you up if you are in need of a boost of self-confidence. I really appreciated the distinction between thinkers and feelers, as well! As poetry, though, it didn't particularly blow me away or impress me!

Loved this book. Very therapeutic. I feel like it would need to be read in context of her other books for the philosophy to be internalized, but it’s a great feel good book that reminds you to slow down and love yourself.

I love reading poetry, but I do not read it very often. This book reminded me not only how much I love to read poetry, but how much I NEED it in my daily life. Melody Godfred has put together a stunning collection of poems inviting readers to explore and embrace self-love in their lives. But it’s HOW she did it that makes all the difference. She’s created a powerful poetry collection that speaks to both sides of our brains so that we can internalize the message the way that works best for us. On the left, there’s a poem that speaks to the left, more analytical, side of the brain and on the right, a poem that speaks to the more feeling side of the brain. Together, they pack a powerful punch.
