Hazard in Hawaii

Rate this book
One man is dead, boiled alive by an unexplained fever-illness. He is just the first.

When locals fall ill on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, a team with a reputation for solving unusual cases is recruited to discover why.

Assistant investigator Sarah Danger can barely contain her excitement at being flown with her boss to a tropical paradise. After all, she expects this is a client overreaction to a natural event, and a routine medical explanation for the deadly fever-illness will surely come.

But hidden beneath the lush beauty of Hawai‘i is something that science can’t explain, and the key to saving everyone may well be as old as the Big Island itself. When unexpectedly thrust into a leadership role, Sarah must rely on her empath abilities and background in comparative mythology to solve the case. Can she uncover the truth in time, or will she fall victim herself?

This was a good start on a new cozy mystery. Enjoyed it a lot and I really wanted to continue with the series. But I don't know if it's my book app who doesn't have the second on or this series don't have any more books in it yet. But I did see that there where at least another series by her to read on the app. Lucky day!

This was a captivating  mystery that had me gripped from the first page. I loved how there is a mixture of myths from the Island that contribute to this story. It is fast paced and full of twists that you never see the end until you get there.

When 1 man dies of a condition where he is basically boiled alive, Sarah Danger and private investigator Jeff are hired to find out what is causing this mysterious illness.

When Jeff suffers a heartattack it is left to Sarah to try and solve this mystery herself. With no indication that it is caused by anything medical she now has to look at something a bit more supernatural. This leads her down a path of myths of the Island, links people would rather you didn't know about and a connection the a volcano that had suddenly got very active.

You will be gripped from beginning to end to find out the root cause of this illness and wondering if they can save the man who according to the first death has 7 days to live.

Hazard in Hawaii is the first book in the Doctor Danger Mystery series by Heather Silvio. This is such a fun little mystery which was all the more interesting with the use of paranormal and supernatural elements that were interwoven through it. I have read most of Ms. Silvio’s books now and know I can count on her to always deliver a story that will engross me from beginning to end- and this book was no different- in fact it’s taken the top spot as my favourite read from her, so far.
I loved the characters, the intriguing story, and all the clever little touches that Ms. Silvio sprinkled throughout her story. So, if you love a cozy mystery, paranormal threads, a tropical paradise setting, and a fun plot then you really won’t want to miss this book.

Thank you, Heather Silvio!

That was so much fun! A conundrum tangled with paranormal and supernatural threads. (Also included: a lovely cameo from the PTA.) It’s filled with lots of Hawai’ian lore and a frighteningly plausible mystery. I had an idea fairly early on of where this might have been going, but the story kept me hooked until the end to find out if I was right and if they’d be able to undo any of the damage. As well, what it would take for Sarah and the team to determine the root cause. The team is made up of an unusual cast of characters who I’m already falling in love with, and I can’t wait to go on their next case with them.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.

This was the first book I’ve read by the author. It was an okay book but not one I loved. The storyline was good and so were some of the characters. I just didn’t get the concept of the special power Sarah had. It wasn’t explained to where I really understood it. That being said, I will read the next in the series.

"Hazard in Hawaii" is the first book in the "Doctor Danger Mystery" series by Heather Silvio. This was a fantastic read, and I enjoyed every second of it. The whole mystery of trying to find out what is causing the illness in people and why was fun. My favorite part was the way Sarah did her investigating and when she would go to the area in the hiking path. I can't wait to read book two in this series. This was my first Heather Silvio book, and it will definitely not be my last. The way Heather writes is out of this world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy mystery novel with a paranormal twist which had me hooked from start to finish. I loved the heroine of the story Sarah Danger, who is working towards her PhD and working as a Private Investigator Assistant. Sarah travels to the Big Island of Hawaii when locals begin to fall ill and one man has already died having been boiled alive from an unexplained fever-illness. To start with Sarah is just excited to have flown to a tropical paradise with her boss and thinks that there will be a perfectly good scientific reason behind this illness, but she starts to think that maybe it’s not a scientific explanation they are looking for. When her boss has a heart attack Sarah is forced into a leadership role and relies on her background in comparative mythology and her empath abilities to solve this intriguing case and save lives.
This is an enjoyable and engaging supernatural mystery with a fast paced storyline which has plenty of action, plot twists and quirky characters to keep any reader happily turning the pages. I loved Sarah as the main character and thought that she bought the story together and I felt like I was solving the mystery alongside her. The descriptive narrative really bought the beautiful setting of Hawaii to life and really set the seen of the mystery. I enjoyed learning about Hawaiian folklore which was sprinkled throughout the story. This was a fun read and a great introduction to Sarah Danger and the start of this new series by an author who is new to me, and I look forward to book two.

This is the first book in a new series for this author which I enjoyed from start to finish. This is a suspenseful story that I found to be fast paced and hard to put down. I enjoyed how the characters were connectable and how they kept the story engaging. The author’s use of details not only kept me turning pages but also brought the story to life. I enjoyed watching the growth in this story and wanting to know what happened next. This is a story about a group of locals becoming ill from something unknown and an assistant investigator who is on the case. Sarah is excited when she is called to work on a case with her boss. She is faced with using her abilities to solve a case that could just turn deadly for her. Will she be able to solve this case in time or will she be next? I really enjoyed what she brought to the story and how the secondary characters are supportive of her character. The twists and turns had me second guessing in parts. This is a great suspenseful story that I would highly recommend.

Hazard in Hawaii (A Doctor Danger Mystery Book 1) by Heather Silvio is a paranormal mystery story. This interesting and intriguing storyline is full of the supernatural and danger, suspense and action and wonderful and unusual characters. They are unique, fun, and original as is the story. This adventure takes us to Hawaii where we uncover deep hidden mysteries and learn their lore’s and mythologies along the way. The story is a little predictable, but that didn’t detract from me enjoying it.
This is a fun start to the series, and I liked that it features old friends from the Paranormal Talent Agency series. Heather provides stories that you don’t want to put down.

32-year-old PhD candidate Sarah Danger works part-time as a private investigator’s assistant while finishing her dissertation on the paranormal in mythology. Her most recent case takes her to the Big Island of Hawaii, where their client’s brother is succumbing to a mysterious, feverish illness that baffles doctors. One person has already died and they fear the disease could spread. The investigative team quickly need to find out what’s going on and why.

Despite the serious topic, there is a lightness to this fast-paced story. It’s partly due to the positive attitude and camaraderie between Sarah, her boss, and team members. They’re curious, determined to help, and go above and beyond to find answers. The beautiful, idyllic setting is the other delightful aspect. The author provides great descriptions of the setting, particularly with respect to the volcano and lava flows. There’s a fair amount of tension and suspense-building in their time-sensitive mission, which makes the story’s quick pace work. This is the first in the Doctor Danger series. Mystery fans who are looking for an intriguing read involving mythology with supernatural elements will likely enjoy this one.

In the lush and mysterious backdrop of Hawaii's Big Island, a fever-illness of unknown origin is claiming lives, setting the stage for Sarah Danger's latest adventure. As the assistant to a seasoned private investigator, Sarah finds herself at the heart of a baffling case that defies scientific explanation. With each step, the line between the natural and supernatural blurs, challenging Sarah and her team to consider possibilities beyond the realm of the explainable.

Marking the debut of an exhilarating series, this novel captivates with its brisk narrative and vividly drawn characters. The author masterfully intertwines the paranormal with the prosaic, crafting a tale that is as much a page-turner as it is a deep dive into the unknown. From the first word to the last, this book is a riveting journey that I devoured in a single session. Anticipation is high for the sequel, and this opening act comes with my wholehearted recommendation.

A mysterious illness is starting to sweep the island of Hawai'i. Since the doctors are stumped, Sarah Danger and her team have been engaged to look into all possible causes, even supernatural ones.

As a sceptic, I really need to be convinced to suspend my disbelief - that did not happen with this story. Though much was steeped in science, the paranormal aspects were not credible, and I didn't buy the resolution.

The use of oft-repeated lines, which merely seemed to add to the word count, was mildly irritating. As was the colour description of a suspect's house (sky-blue) which was reiterated each time it was visited.

I did not connect with the main characters. Though the plot was unusual, I will not be continuing with this series.

The characters are believable, interesting, and makes the reader want to know more about them. The plot is easily followed, and the premise is discovering what is making people have a raging fever and why. The supernatural effect is, like most things beyond our experience, confusing at best. It does not make me want to visit Hawaii anymore than I did before. However, personal feelings aside, I do recommend this book because it has a good outcome and the characters as well as their solutions are worth reading about.

This was an interesting book. I liked how the author mixed the paranormal with mystery. Sarah Danger (yes that is her real last name) was a good pov character to follow around as she tries to solve a mystery in Hawaii. Sarah is an empath so she can feel the emotions of others which helps her solve the mystery of why people are coming down with fevers that continue to go up until they die. Overall, I liked this story and will have to check out the next one in the series.

Burning up for revenge

Sarah’s a clairempath, she can feel other’s emotions as if they are her own. She’s learned to mostly block them out as needed. She travels to Hawaii with her boss, a PI ,to figure out why his friend’s brother is deathly ill. Is his illness something medical or could it be something paranormal? This was an engaging story and I enjoyed the twists in the plot.

Hazard in Hawaii was perfect for me: perfect length, perfect style and perfect atmosphere. I really like the dash of supernatural mixed in with the historical/cultural. Not a full blown supernatural thriller per say, A Doctor Danger Mystery is more of a cozy, low key mystery with some supernatural inkling about a strange illness that target specific persons. The writing style is very easy to read, the characters are interesting and their banter is not cringeworhty and the pacing is on point. I got to learn a bit about some Hawaiian folklore and was compelled to find out what was the cause of the illness. So mission accomplished to the author, you have a new fan.

I think the characters needed more development but I mostly liked this book. The setting in Hawaii was great. The first half of the plot was better. Once she figured out that Helen was causing the illnesses, it wasn't as interesting. I'd read another by this author but I'm hoping she pays more attention to character development in the series.

Are these fatal illnesses supernatural?

Dr Danger explores connections when people start contracting a strange illness on the Big Island of Hawaii. Natural causes? Something psionic? Or downright supernatural? Lives hang in the balance.

Intriguing!

Doctor Danger is an interesting sleuth that uses her power of sharing the emotions of people (in this case a goddess, too!) around her. The setting in Hawaii made it more fun, too. I'll be looking forward to more of her adventures!
