Fiona stood, frozen in shock. The man she had been embracing with everything in her soul wasn’t her boyfriend Greg…she knew him. She had seen him just last night, in her dream. He was the man she had loved for three hundred years.Fiona MacLean has left everything—and everyone—behind to visit Scotland in search of her roots. What she finds there is a mystery reaching back nearly three hundred years, a love that transcends time, and an evil that refuses to die. How can she keep history from repeating itself and save the man she has loved for centuries?
I literally could not put this book down. Well-written with characters you’ll love and hate. I love the Scottish Highlands and am familiar with many of the places described in Drumossie, so it was like revisiting them and being wrapped in the culture and history. Fiona and Ewan meet at the site of the Battle of Culloden, but both recognize each other from a time long passed. Is it fate for history to repeat itself, or can they change the outcome that would end their relationship before it even has a chance to flourish? You’ll have to read it to see, but make sure you have some free time as you won’t want to stop reading until you find the answers.
“The past beats inside me like a second heart.” - John Banville
The cover of the book made me think it was a nonfiction history book. But when I read the first page of the prologue, I was hooked by the beautiful description of the post-battle scene of a wounded soldier from 1746, Scotland. The first chapter was even better because it was set in modern times, which I could relate with.
Fiona Maclean is a 27 years old Scottish-Canadien who lives with her three other siblings and her parents on Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. For a long time she has been seeing a recurring nightmare of a battle scene in which she sees a handsome soldier with blue eyes. Disoriented, she doesn’t understand why she is seeing this nightmare when she has never experienced such things in real life before. One day, her father decides to send her to do research on a historical project in Highland, Scotland, so she can reconcile with her ancestral land and learn more about it. But there, she meets her past in the chaos of her country’s history. A past that continues from 1746 to her present life carrying dangers for herself and someone who means the world to her.
An unpredictable plot with a paranormal love story and historical significance made it a perfect October read for me. Not being a big fan of romance genre, this novel absorbed my attention despite being romance; I found myself quickly reading to see what happened in the next chapter. The love story of Fiona Maclean with this guy (won’t spoil it by naming him) was sweet and intimate, not in a sexual way, which I loved. The alternating chapters of the past from Inverness, Scotland in 1746 to present times weren’t annoying at all. I liked how the author masterfully weaved in the two different interconnected stories of four different characters chapter by chapter, and maintained an ideal pace which kept me wanting more.
The fact that the author wrote a story based on the history of Scotland and Battle of Culloden, there were many informative details which blended in smoothly with the fictional plot, and did not make me feel like I was dumped with a history lesson. I loved the setting of the story, Highland, since I have never read a book based there before. The twist was unforeseen and I liked the ending. Overall, this was an enjoyable read! Not boring at all.

"It seems like a lot of work for the fates to go through just to get a lad to meet a lass." 𝘔𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴: This book surprised me! Based on the cover, I thought it was a historical war story. While there were elements of war, 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐞 is SO much more than that. It tells a love story of the deepest kind, that transcends the test of time. 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐞 explores themes of grief and forgiveness, and teaches the importance of following your intuition. The love story of this book gave me serious Serendipity movie vibes! Also, I learned more about Scotland and its history than I ever knew. My husband has traveled to Scotland and has often talked about wanting to take me there. This book gave me an itch to travel! I loved it. 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐞 is the first book of the 𝘌𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 series by M. MacKinnon. I can't wait to see what comes next!
Drumossie is an excellent introduction to the Echoes in Time series. I’m definitely ready for more! Scotland, as in all M. MacKinnon’s books, is as captivating as her characters. Beautiful places, ghosts of the past and strong characters take you on a journey through time to solve a mystery that may have been repeating itself for generations. Great read!
The stories of Fiona and Ewan in the present time, and Eilidh and Iain in 1746, are beautifully intertwined in this novel. The abiding nature of true love and the history of the Battle of Culloden are threaded through both timelines in a way that kept the pages turning. Looking forward to Book 2 in this series.
This book was given to me as a Christmas gift so I felt obligated to read it. Definitely not my genre. And I just didn’t love it. I’m not a believer in reincarnation so this was a stretch for me. Too many similar names made it hard to keep track of who was what. For those who like “clean” books - no cursing, sex, etc - this is for you.
I read this book because my boss asked me to read it to see if it was a good fit for The Reading Glass Books (the bookstore I work for in the Cumberland Mall). I got to meet the author and read it and loved it. This is a must read. Watch this author because she is bestselling material.
