An unexpected fourth installment, of the Night Flyer of Milan series. I had thought we had seen the end of it with the third installment, but according to the writers end blurb - there is also to be a fifth! Kindle Unlimited.

I found this installment interesting and enjoyable, but at times I often wondered if it was necessary? There was also a fair few times where the writing became quite preachy and pious with regards to certain topics, which I never recalled happening in previous installments.

I do think the series is very unique as a historic piece set in 1500's Milan, with Fiore whose father was an inventor with a friend in the famous renaissance man, Da Vinci, who she conveniently grew up around, in his workshop, looking at his drawings etc.

The inventions are interesting, but her luck as the Night Flyer is often too good to be true. But we all need a hero. Her romance with Maddie, the upper echelon Silk Merchant is still loving and beautiful, and the rest of the family is also expanding and loving, too. It was nice to get an update on everyone.

They are reminding me of procedurals now, with a 'case of the week' type of scenario playing out in this installment, and I assume similar will happen with the next. I just wish I could feel a little more excitement, and I'm not sure why I don't?

I'd love to hear other peoples opinions. Would recommend, they are highly detailed and well written.

Edale Lane’s heroine has returned to the skies of early 16th-century Milan, and Book Four of THE NIGHT FLYER series will surely delight readers who enjoyed the earlier volumes. Those unfamiliar with Books 1-3 will not have too much difficulty “catching up,” although the novel will probably make more sense in the context of what has transpired earlier.

Friendship with former foes remains a thematic element, as the Torellis and their “extended family” enjoy a wedding, and the book concludes with promise of another romance. We also encounter the rather menacing return of Madalena’s former (female) lover, who has accompanied her wealthy employer, Don Cosimo d’Este. More ominous still is a string of mysterious robberies, committed by thieves who jump into the canal and disappear. Perhaps most amazing of all is the manifestation of Leonardo da Vinci’s submarine design. In the end, of course, the Night Flyer faces familiar challenges: "to rescue innocent people … abducted by a villain."

Like other books in the series, MISSING IN MILAN is well-paced: a page-turner well suited for completion in a single session. The story-line, though somewhat predictable, retains its sense of mystery and suspense.

At times I was somewhat bothered by inconsistencies. For example, despite her many martial skills, the Night Flyer lacks training in fencing. Nevertheless, she is able to battle swordsmen armed with her own weapons, skillfully parrying blows and countering.

I would also like to have seen those few Italian terms — e.g., si, grazie, et al. — in italics. [It would be even nicer if the GoodReads formatting permitted ME to italicize those words and the book titles without italicizing the entire review, but that's a different issue.] Another minor point, to be sure, but perhaps food for future reference.

All told, though, I enjoyed this latest installment and look forward to the next one. I truly wish 4.5 stars was an option on GoodReads!

These books are an interesting mixture of historical mystery and fantasy. The Night Flyer is a sort of sixteenth century ‘Batman’, solving crime in Milan rather than ‘Gotham City’. I really enjoy the historical references in these books and the new inventions, even thought they wouldn’t actually work with the technology of the day., are very interesting
Florentina and Maddie are still going strong although I don’t think the author needs to work so hard to convince us they are still madly in love.
I did find Florentina a bit annoying when she kept worrying about having to kill murdering assassins and criminals, even when it puts her in severe danger and often jeopardises her mission.

There's a great mystery in this one as we not only have thefts from the docks, but several of the best Calcio players have gone missing. The Night Flyer makes allies of some old adversaries while searching for the men and attempting to catch a clever enemy longing to become a master criminal. Maddie tries to figure out exactly what an old lover wants and we wonder how and if the woman is connected to the crimes. Leonardo and Jules Verne would be happy with the solution to the mystery and any Marvel superhero would be envious of the way the Night Flyer handles the fights. Maddie's and Florentina's relationship is rock solid and they are a wonderful, supportive pair. The city itself is a vivid character in the story. Another great entry in this immersive series.

I was given an ARC of this book by the author. I was delighted to see that Ms.Lane had decided to continue this series as it is my favorite of hers to date. Once again, her descriptions of the people, places, and events in the Milan of the Night Flyer's day are vivid and entertaining. This story, though interesting, was not as "action packed" as the previous books of the series, but I hear that there is to be one more final story in the Night Flyer saga and this book was more of a "setup" book for this. However, it is well worth the read, entertaining, enlightening, and endearing in its own way.

I really enjoy this series, so I was pleased to see another adventure for the Night Flyer, the superhero of the Renaissance. I’ve started to figure out some of the clues the author gives, which has made reading Missing in Milan more fun for me because then I read to find out when the Night Flyer and Maddie will unravel what I think I already know, and to see if I’m right.

Florentina and Maddie have such a lovely relationship, but in this novel, I worried that someone would discover their secret, especially with a former adversary becoming part of the family and an old flame of Maddy’s coming to town. There is all that emotional drama as well as an interesting mystery that has to be solved, danger for several characters, and some wild derring-do by the Night Flyer. I also enjoyed getting into Florentina’s mind a little more, too. How does she rationalize that she injures and sometimes kills people as the Night Flyer when she believes killing is wrong? It was an intriguing introspection for her. There is no answer yet to that dilemma.

Book four in the Night Flyer series is an absolute hit. New mysteries to solve, great characters, action, and affection all make for a terrific penultimate Night Flyer story.

Missing in Milan has a bit of a different feel to the first three of the series, the shadow guild has gone quiet, Maddie’s life is no longer in danger, the Night Flyer’s personal missions have been put to rest, thing have started to settle into a new normal. I loved how the new dynamics were explored, especially between Florentina and Maddie.

With Maddie safe and Florentina given a higher position in the family which grants her a room next to Maddie’s (with a shared closet) their relationship blooms. No longer needing to steal moments together they are now able to share every night, I loved how often they were able to be affectionate and domestic together, especially with Maddie’s ex showing up to cause trouble and stir up jealousy.

Over the series the Night Flyer has evolved a great deal, from vendetta to vigilante to hero. This is the first book where Florentina doesn’t have a personal stake and it gives her much more time to think of the morality of her actions as the Night Flyer. In the past she was completing her vendetta or acting quickly to protect the woman she loves or herself. Lane does an amazing job exploring the right and wrong of Florentina’s actions and how she views those actions when she isn’t personally connected to those she is helping.

I love the fresh mystery and new threat the Night Flyer faces. Lane does a marvelous job of introducing a new antagonist and atmosphere while still maintaining the same feel of the other stories.

Lane continues to deliver stunning action scenes using all of the Night Flyer’s skills and tools. This story has a great balance of action and intrigue as well has a healthy dose of history that is an intrinsic part of this series.

The character development is phenomenal. These characters have been growing and changing for four books now and I love how we get to journey through the evolution of all of the characters involved. I especially loved the conversation between Matteo and Florentina which made me so proud of the young man he is becoming.

I absolutely adore this series and these characters. Lane has created a masterpiece and I am so excite and sad for the final book to be released, I am looking forward to seeing how this delightful series ends but also know it will be like saying goodbye to a dear friend. Read this series!
