Winner of a second-place award in the popular scripture studies category from the Catholic Media Association. The desert wanderings of the Chosen People—and the spiritual lessons and encouragement they offer to us today—come alive in scripture teacher Sonja Corbitt’s five-week Bible study on the Exodus account.
This dynamic study will help you to apply the spiritual lessons of the Exodus into your own life, identify areas of desolation and need, and better understand God’s greater purposes in times of adversity and dryness. In so doing, you will experience what it means to invite Jesus to nourish your spirit and guide you to the kingdom promised to all who enter into his rest.
Breaking open both the Exodus and overview of it found in Hebrews 3–4, Corbitt shows how the event is also a powerful metaphor for the spiritual everything we need—spiritual, emotional, and physical rest and replenishment—is found not at the end of our journey but in the desert itself. .Everything God desires for us may be found in the “Dew of Heaven,” Jesus.
Corbitt reveals that the heavenly sustenance God provided to the Chosen People in the desert is available to us today if we open ourselves to it. Whatever your questions, you will find the answers you seek as you come to understand how God delivered the Chosen People from their waywardness and blessed them with everything they needed to reach the Promised Land. And he will do the same for us if we ask.
Each of the five chapters of this study explores a different facet of the desert
rest in the wandering—God’s ways are desert entering the desert;thoughts at testing in the desert;emotions at conquering the desert;body and spirit at emerging from the desert; andthe blessings of entering the Promised Land. Each chapter contains summary points, an invitation to respond, and Corbitt’s LOVE the Word lectio exercises.
Sonja Corbitt is the Bible Study Evangelista. She's a Catholic Scripture teacher with a story teller's gift - a Southern Belle with a warrior's heart and a poet's pen.
We're all sweating and dirty with the effort to love and lift all He's given to us - those people, duties, callings, and longings that break our hearts and make them sing, sometimes at the same time. But most times, we need to be loved and lifted ourselves.
So her Bible study media are created with you in mind, bites of spinach that taste like cake, to help you make space in your busy heart and schedule for God to love and lift you all the way up into His great lap, where all you've been given is loved and lifted too.
Sonja has incredible knowledge of the Bible and her intense study of the Word and Catechism is so very apparent in this study. She begins by pointing out the continuity of the scripture in Exodus and Hebrews 3:7-4:13. The emphasis on God’s purpose of the desert spans both Testaments- we need to pay special attention to this. She shows us how God uses and requires desert seasons in our lives and what draws us into the desert (fear, rebellion, anxiety, & sin). She uses many purposeful, honest examples from her own life to help us with our own fears, wills, and dispositions. She makes an incredibly urgent call to return to the sacredness of the Sabbath, Eucharist and daily thankfulness and acknowledgement of the “Dew of Heaven”. Every chapter has a review, invitation and benediction. It is impossible to read this book and not be changed. If you are tired of striving, tired of repeat problems, or just trying to learn how to lean into the daily provisions of God, I highly recommend this book.
I spent July reading my first Sonya Corbitt study with a small group of women. Sonya leads the reader with a desert/dew focus in Just Rest, lacing in God’s word and promises with impact. She reminds us multiple times that even in the midst of a desert season, God is with us still. I loved Sonya’s coined phrase “Pop Quizzes,” and her relatable writing style. Not every author, especially in women’s ministry, feels comfortable being so vulnerable. But Sonya’s real and raw made me believe she walked in a spiritual desert, and understand why once she trusted in God fully, His promises fulfilled were so powerful and precious. I enjoyed this book and the conversations it drew out of my small group.
