That was the last thing my best friend Elijah asked me before the light left his eyes.
I kept my word to my Delta Force brother and checked on Delilah Hunter often over the years. When she remarried six months after my buddy died, she infuriated everyone who was loyal to Elijah’s memory. But I knew better than anyone how unbearable loneliness could be, so I didn’t judge her. I stuck with her, she had been my friend, too.
Eventually, I started to give her the space she needed to start her new life without the constant reminder of her dead husband. Delilah Hunter-Bradshaw seemed to be doing well. So, when she stumbled into Force’s New Orleans office ten years later, battered and bruised, asking for me, I knew she had fooled me and everyone else in her life. She was nowhere near well.
It was time to keep my promise to my dead best friend. If he’s watching from above, I hope he can forgive me for what I’m about to do.

The Savannah Heat and New Orleans Cajuns series precede this series. I have read six from the Heat series, but none from the Cajuns' series. I am reading this first because it is on Kindle Unlimited and my trial is about to expire. This is also the first in this series I am reading (Seth's book is not included with Kindle Unlimited).
I love the lack of pretense between Kirk and Leilah. As people ger older, they know what they want and are not afraid to go after it. There is no uncertainty or beating around the bush and I respect that. Too many stories are filled with self-doubt, hesitation, and too much build to reach a climax (no pun intended). However, I also think the suspenseful side of the story was somewhat unrealistic.
Why is Kirk always driving? He is not invincible and needs sleep too.
