It is early Thaw in the year 1445, and the ruling Lord of Umber has been brutally murdered by his most trusted captain. Caela, a young musician, is about to be embroiled in the politics of the House of Umber as she unwittingly foils a second assassination attempt. And a stranger with a chequered past is about to cross her path as he follows the elusive clues to what he believes is an approaching war. Ahead of her lies a quest that will lead her beyond the ancient mountains and deep into the lands beyond. She will encounter strange new people and learn fragmentary tales of the lost history of human civilization prior to its fall. But the rumours of war are just the beginning, and Caela will be forced to stare into the abyss as everything she knows falls under the shadow of a potential second Cataclysm.

There was nothing wrong with this book per se. The story moved at a decent pace, the ending was a bit anti-climactic. It's one of those books that are just there. It didn't take me long to read it, it's pretty short but I am pretty neutral to the whole experience.
