He wages war against spirits. She wants to save them.
A few days ago, Rika was the hero of the day, saving Berlin from the Erlking. Now, Wulf has returned – the legendary commander of the Berlin Spirit Seekers. Not only does she feel redundant, but her views on spirits clash spectacularly with Wulf’s. He wants to defeat every single one of them; she wants to defend them. Then Budapest calls for help. Water spirits of immeasurable power are threatening the beautiful city along the Danube. Eager to reconnect with her Hungarian roots, Rika accompanies Wulf as he travels East. Connecting with spirits always came easy to her, but these new spirits are everything the Spirit Seekers told her they’d be: dangerous, aggressive, and full of hate.
Join the Spirit Seekers as they travel to Hungary in their wettest adventure yet. Get your copy now to find out whether Rika finds her voice or is drowned out.
A fantastic sequel that had me on the edge of the seat biting my nails and occasionally ranting at a certain 'righteous and overbearing and... just an all-around idiot' famous seeker.
In this part of Rika's journey, we find her in Budapest, trying to prove herself to the legendary commander of the Berlin Spirit Seekers - Wulf. And trying to prove to him that fighting spirits is not the only way to go about escaping the wrath of nature. Easier said than done with someone as angry as Wulf who outright despises Rika's ideas.
This book is even more gripping and addictive than the first. The stakes are higher, the creatures even more fascinating, the nastiness gets nastier as far as certain spirits are concerned and some of the characters might make you want to shake them. Prose, wordbuilding, character development and everything else including feeling... all of it is upped a notch. This one's guaranteed to have you turning pages long into the night. And reaching straight for the sequel.
It's only book 2 but I'm in love with this series!!
I’m loving this urban fantasy series with an environmental twist! I figured out what it reminds me of: the amazing Beka Cooper series by Tamara Pierce! I’m really enjoying watching Rika face nearly insurmountable odds to convince people to listen to her Traveller knowledge. I also love the settings. So many books take place in the same locales. It’s lovely to learn about Budapest in this book!
Rika and Wulf butt heads repeatedly. A dangerous, drastic secret is revealed. Other things also happen. (No spoilers !!) Make sure you're prepared for a ** good ** read, settled in your comfy chair, feet up and drink of choice at hand. Enjoy !!
I’m loving this series, it makes my hippy heart so happy! Rika is learning to stand up for herself and the spirits. I love that she doesn’t just accept what she’s told but fights for a better way.
Loving the story. Each book gets more and more interesting. The excitement of each battle against the bad spirits continues. The characters are diverse and entertaining. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Just when Rika feels like she’s making friends she’s back to square one with the return of Wulf, following a near-fatal battle with a volcanic spirit.
Finding her feet again is hard, but Rika knows how to handle hard. What she doesn’t know is how to handle people who view the spirits as harmful and evil. A part of her is convinced that she can help the Spirit Seekers see that there’s another way. So when Wulf offers her a trip to the Budapest post, she jumps on it - partly to seize the chance to try and track down her mother.
Only not all is as it seems, the Budapest Spirit Seekers are facing fierce polluted spirits and their secrets are deadly. It’s only on return to Berlin that everything comes to a head and Rika must decide if she will stay or go for good.
The best thing about the second book in a series is how even the most fleshed out world becomes bigger - the history, the motivations, and the challenges. And Janna does it brilliantly in this one! Rika’s ‘Buffy-esque’ humour made my favourite quote this week, and it just keeps getting better. I adored learning more about Rika and the Spirit Seekers, especially when things were clashing.
Speaking of clashing, I swear the way the battle scenes were written, I felt like I was right alongside all of them. The way that Janna grabs ahold of you and pulls you into the story is incredible.
I also loved the end of the book, because just when things looked at their worst, it got all twisty and I LOVED it!
Throw in even more beautiful mythology, and my obsession has turned - well, extra-obsessive - which is why Book Three 🌿Back to Nature🌿 is already open!
Book two in the Spirit Seeker series was another fantastic read. The characters were flawed, yet relatable, and the world building was as vividly stunning as with book one. I've never been to Europe, but had no trouble picturing it, due to the author's attention to detail.
The whole concept of the polluted spirits was well developed and entertaining to read. I was constantly on my toes, trying to figure out where things might go next. Rika's personal history is explored in this book - which overlaps with the trip to Budapest. It was great to learn a little more about her roots and the travellers she grew up among.
Rika and Wulf have a lot to overcome if they ever hope to see eye to eye. Their oposing views on the spirit world doesn't leave much room for compromise, but they have such a connection. Something is drawing them to each other. I can't wait to see where this goes. We are also gradually being given a larger window into the spirits themselves. The personification of nature is such a refreshing concept, and draws attention to climate change and the human part in it.
By the end of this book, the characters have started to feel like old friends. The reader is firmly tied to the future of these amazing spirit seekers. I can't wait to read the next installment.
Wulf is back and in charge in Berlin, that is right up until he’s asked to help in Budapest. Rika has her own reasons for wanting to go with him, and so the two set off for Hungary where they find spirit trouble just waiting for them.
Rika learns a lot in Hungary, a little about herself, and a lot more about the spirit world. Unfortunately, she’s fighting against some serious brainwashing when it comes to Wulf Bachmann, and worse still as it pertains to the Spirit Seeker organization.
This is a refreshingly original series, with an interesting premise and viewpoint. It’s a little bit preachy regarding environmental issues, but I quite enjoy Rika’s relationships with the spirits, and the rather animistic perspective she has. She’s still a unique character that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about. There’s enough tension and dissension to provide an interesting conflict between Rika and the Spirit Seekers, while still managing to make sure that the individuals involved aren’t painted as evil.
The series is an engrossing urban fantasy one, with a wealth of fascinating characters and a truly interesting and individual plot, that urban fantasy fans will enjoy reading about.
This continues the fascinating story of Rika and the relationship she has with nature spirits and her fight to get the Spirit Seekers to see that not all spirits wish people harm. It is an uphill battle for her, slamming up against decades, maybe even centuries, of Spirit Seeker prejudice and their goal to take down the spirit world, one battle at a time. Janna Ruth presents the battling seekers' attitudes and motivations very effectively, all the while keeping her readers firmly on Rika's side. The characters are grounded in reality and make the fantastical parts of the story seem completely natural. I love the story and the writing and can't wait to start the next book!
What a lovely series! Action packed, complex characters, and unique world building. I love how Rika's story is unfolding, and the theme of found family as well. I hope you give this series a try! Thank you!
Excellent, excellent, excellent. I love the conflict between Rika and the spirit seekers. The interaction between Rika and Grune was superb, showing a side of spirit seekers have been ignoring. Keep writing, Ms Ruth!
A really thoughtful story. Sometimes a bit grim because it spells out the problems of humanity, but a resonant message. Great magic fights and compelling interplay between the characters. The pure love between the MC and her spirit friend Aeola leaps out as it’s so rare to read that kind of uncomplicated affection in a UF novel. In this book the MC traveled to Budapest and the author did an excellent job making me feel like I was traveling there too. I learned several things about the area, history, geography, and cuisine.
I really like these books I hope they will continue! I became instantly involved in the story line! The characters in these books are so easy to understand!
