Before the ink is dry on my last case, I get pulled onto another, and away from what could be a new beginning with the guys.
The murder of a high-profile coven leader is being kept a secret, only his inner circle knows. Problem is, they just may be the reason he ended up with a femur through his heart. Add some necromancy into the mix and things are getting down right intriguing dangerous.
On top of the case, there’s also my very tricky love life that has a little too much in common with the dead man for my liking. I just hope our story doesn’t end with a bloody, broken heart like his did.
Bones are piling up, just like suspects. We need to solve this case before the death magic can target anyone else.
Creeping it Real is the second book in the Magical Bureau of Investigation series. This is a slow burn RH or whychoose novel with adult situations.
Albany lives in Michigan where she's happily married to her high school sweetheart. She spends most of her time juggling her four children's extracurricular activities, with her nose stuck in a book. When not reading you can find her writing her very own book boyfriends. Albany's passion is writing romance with real characters that are far from perfect, but always seem to find their own happily ever afters.
4.4 stars. So. I’m kind of losing interest. The second chance thing is just not my favorite, and the tension is not the kind I enjoy. Since it’s mostly focused on what they were all doing while they were apart. Ugh. I don’t know. It’s not bad. And I sort of like that each book focuses on a different case that the FMC is solving. I’m just not really in the mood for it.
It’s book two and they still haven’t had a sit down conversation. Well they’ve had a conversation as well as conversations, but they haven’t come to a conclusion. Spoilers ahead.
In the conversation they had the female lead says something along the lines of it doesn’t change the fact that you guys chose him over me. In the first book we find out that one of the guys told the other guys not to go and see her and they listen to him. It’s the fact that it’s true that they literally chose each other over her and they have the nerve to talk about how precious she is and how much they love her and yada yada. If I were her I would have just slammed the door in their face and forgot all about them because what in the world?
Like no way it’s been pretty much 10 years and I find that out and still want to be with you. I think that the female lead is too forgiving because at the end of the day if their relationship doesn’t work out again she will end up on her own and they will also have each other. No matter what they say or do it doesn’t change the fact that they care about each other more than they care about her.
Creeping it Real is book two in the Magical Bureau of Investigation Series by Albany Walker.
Unfortunately nothing changes from book 1 to book 2.
The reverse harem couple still don’t sit down and have a deep conversation like they need too. When they do talk it boils down too the guys picking each other instead of her, yet they keep saying how precious she is and how much they love her yada yada, but in the end they never showed her that she is first, that she is precious, and that they would choose her. If I was her I’d close the door and forget them all.
The MBI case Frankie is working on is ok. It helps that Percy (Frankie’s familiar) has a running commentary that keeps the story flowing.
Creeping it Real in the end was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
This second book was more procedural than the first, which I really enjoyed. There were some drama points that I wish the MFC stayed mad a little longer, but I guess not everyone can hold a grudge like I can 🤣 Walker has built a pretty solid world base with this series that could and should be expanded upon.
As if there was any doubt this would be anything less than stellar.
I adore Frankie. I find her refreshing in the sense that she is a career driven character. She's relatively new to the job and finding her footing but also trying to prove herself to her bosses while balancing and restoring a relationship she, in hindsight, shouldn't have ended.
The men are so delightfully enthralled with her that nothing she expects of them is accurate. Remy wanted to be mad at her but their attraction, their history is undeniable. Felix is the soft one (so far), seeing reason and loving her/comforting her immediately despite the falling out of teenage loves. Grayson... is less easy to read though that image is getting a whole lot clearer. He never stopped loving her but losing her once forced him to harden his heart to avoid hurting again.
Ugh. The angst in Creeping it Real HURTS. Even if it's in the past, rehashing the pain is like ripping open a scab and pouring salt back over it.
I flove Percy. He's the comedic relief, the voice of reason, and the anchor Frankie needs in the sea of uncertainty she's currently in.
I really enjoyed the MBI case Frankie worked in this installment. Gavin is too good to be gone after one appearance🤞🏻 I'm still not sure how to feel about Wuornos. I feel like he's not bad, but not good😅 also. I hope we see Nash again. I liked her😂
I love the harem dynamic in these books. The second chance feeling and the pain of recovering what they lost isn't something I typically read but when Albany Walker writes something, I'm gonna read it
I'll just jump right in and say that I like that the story has a good balance between the RH relationships and Frankie's job.
At the end of book 1, we saw Frankie set off to work on a special project. During book 2, she uses her magic to help unravel a murder mystery and pinpoint the suspect. Heads up, it wasn't the butler in the coat room with a golf club.
Her temporary boss, Wuornos, is weird. I mean, maybe he just sees something in her that we aren't in on yet but the constant staring is strange. Getting to see relationships with her coworkers is another plus to the part of the story that takes place outside of the RH stuff.
Near the top of my favorite characters list is her mink, Percy. He has what seems like zero filter and his truth telling has me dead. I can't wait until Remy and Grayson can hear him.
Now...the men. Remy, Grayson and Felix. Gray and Frankie have some super raw insecurities between them because of their history and that situation gets a bit of healing in this book.
The guys make moves to show Frankie that they're serious about both repairing and building their relationship with her. They're very vocal about their decision to be with her so there aren't any misunderstandings about their commitment.
However, Frankie is jealous of any female in the guys life almost to an ugly amount. She. Left. Them. And then came back harboring negative feelings because they didn't chase her. I understand the feelings but it still feels kind of gross.
There's not a heart stopping or gut clenching cliffy but it still ends on a note that leaves you knowing it's an unfinished story and curious about what's going to happen next.
Anyway. That is my super long winded version of saying I liked this book. Just 2 more notes before I go. Maybe you want to know, maybe you don't 🤷🏽♀️.
I'm really enjoying riding along with Frankie on her cases while she tries to work out other personal life. I also love the guys and how they're all trying. All in all good read and looking forward to the next book.
Lots of detective work and spice. I’m enthralled and look forward to reading. Look forward to the following books. The additional characters introduced felt seamless.
Honestly, I liked this series. But I wanted to like it a lot more than I did; I could have liked it a lot more than I did. It is mostly a series of magical investigation bureau mysteries (almost bordering on cozy mysteries) with a poly second-chance romance subplot. I liked the mysteries. I liked the romantic subplot. I really liked the way the men had an important relationship between themselves. The problem is that the subplot is too much plot for a subplot, and as a subplot, doesn’t get the attention it needs. This means that the reader is left feeling unsatisfied by it. There were a lot of conversations that needed to happen that just didn’t, a lot of groveling and forgiveness that needed to be on-page and just wasn’t, etc. It left the books feeling lopsided and ill-weighted.
The reason I didn’t rate it higher than I did, though, is for a single big reason (and this is a spoiler, be warned). The basic premise is that Frankie and her guys had an “oops” misunderstanding while casting a spell as teens and then, despite being inseparable since they were children (and one being a freaking empath, another reading magical intent), and as a result, she ran away. But she only went 45 minutes away, they knew where she was (secretly checked on her once a month), and she knew where they were (in her hometown with everything and everyone she loved). And I’m supposed to believe, as a reader, that, despite missing one another, they all went somewhere between 5 and 10 years (the exact time is not stated, but long enough to start and finish university, go through bureau training, and get ensconced in careers) none of them ever even tried to make contact. She never had reason to visit home? None of that is even remotely believable, especially with the way the men structure their lives around the assumption that she’d be back at some point. That’s the foundation of the book, and it is shaky at best. I tried to suspend disbelief, but it was a struggle. It’s simply that unbelievable and undermined the entire plot.
Despite all of that, I liked the characters and world a lot. I’d be willing to read more of Walker’s work.
I am enjoying this series and I like that the smaller plots are finished. Even if the books are short its satisfying. We have magic as a everyday thing yet we don't get bogged down in all the names of things or the invention of things that has to be learned. Its clear and simple without all the long drawn out explanation. The 4 stars are for the relationship she has and the tidbits of things that happen . Its not clear and its almost like I'm supposed to know what went on as the writer gets into their problems . We have a " girl" they spent time with the day after P. Got scared and left . She's still around but its not clear. I mean she ran after getting her phone blew up saying they were cheating on her and it's not important enough to sit down and hash out all the true details .. Just discussed vaguely as if it wasn't all that much when obviously it was major to her ( with good reason) . Then the assistant that has key to house and the other woman to house ...seems plenty woman has access to the guys and the I wanna be with you combined with them spying on her for years but never talking to her ... Just seems weak to me. Not feeling the draw to her. Just like seeing ya is enough. Yes we see you miserable but hey got our fix. See ya dont date so ..we all good with that. Just they supposed to have this bond and I feel like its not there's with the way they let things stagnant ... Don't know if next book is a conclusion but I do hope its not left with the relationship talk the way it is because I don't feel like everything is out in open or explained and I'd have a problem with the women still around and know they'd still see them very much in their lives. its like she went in suspended love life and they just went on their way .
Magical Bureau of Investigation was such an incredible series and I’m honestly worried my review won’t do it justice. Been in a bit of a review slump as of late, but what can ya do? *shrugs*
I’m going to have to review books 1-3 in this together because… I binged the trilogy… I binged it hella hard. I started Homecoming Homicide (book 1) on Dec 14th and finished Perfectly Wicked (book 3) on the 17th. Also can we talk about what phenomenal timing I had? Swear it was fate that I finished book 2 at 4am on the 16th, the same day book three released. I didn’t even look to see how many books had been released when I started this series so it was totally meant to be.
Sorry I’m rambling, let’s get back to the series. I am absolutely OBSESSED with Percy, he’s the cutest and most hilarious familiar I’ve read to date! The mystery aspect and Frankie’s job definitely made the series addictive. I was so invested in finding out answers to the cases she worked that I couldn’t put the books down!
I really did love this series, like if Albany Walker had Percy merch I’d throw all my money at her kind of love. There was one thing I was disappointed with tho and that was Perfectly Wicked’s ending. At first I happily assumed there were more books in the series but upon further investigation I found out it was only a trilogy. Some things just felt unfinished if that makes sense? Like there could potentially (hopefully *fingers crossed*) be additional books that take place in that world in the future. I’m really hoping that means there will be because I truly adored the characters of Magical Bureau of Investigation.
I tried. Read the first book and while the writing is mostly fine, and the mystery and story have potential, the guys’ actions are just not okay. The guys have been separated from the FMC for years because of…reasons. (Trying to avoid spoilers). And not bad reasons. Dumb decisions were made on both sides and the guys operate like they were waiting got her to come back. Not great, but fine. Once she does come back, they kidnap her, lock her in their house, are buttholes (one is even verbally cruel) and blame her for leaving. But they won’t let her leave the house. They’re supposedly trying to get back with her. The whole “not letting you go again” deal. But they take it to extreme where they prevent her from getting her car, escort her everywhere, and generally dismiss her free will. Things start to barely get a little better at the end so I try the second book. Things start happening with her work and she’s pulled onto a super high clearance low profile case unexpectedly. Pissy because she “left” again, they show up at the hotel and completely disregard the fact that they are putting her job and the case in jeopardy. There is absolutely NO respect for FMC that I can see and she’s seemingly fine with it. Not okay for me.
Nothing is what it seems in this series. You think it's going in one direction, you think you know what's going on or who did what, but then... bam! Something unexpected! Especially in this particular book!
One of the only things that made me cringe, and started driving me crazy, is, of all things: Store names. At one point, characters have gone shopping, and instead of what would have been obviously "Walmart" was "Witchmart". "LaSenza" was "LaWitchy" or something. I get that it's a different world where everyone seems to have magic, but... not all stores need to have "Witch" in them. It gets pretty ridiculous, and I found it took away from the story whenever it was there. Maybe it bugged me more than it should have, but I feel that's something you'd see more in a kids or teen book. Not something obviously meant for 18+.
OTHER than that - great series! I've read this book all in one day, plus 2/3 of the first one earlier, and now starting the third one. I'd recommend it if you like a bit of mystery, "who dunnit", RH type books!
Who knew? I was between series when I stumbled upon this one. It seemed interesting but I was worried it was going to drag on about their last problem. The first book is a little light and I wasn't getting too much or seeing what had happened to them. But by the end I was definitely booked and had to see what was going to happen next. The thing that really got me laughing is the titles to each chapter. Boo one and first chapter title is one I have been wearing on a t 👕 for about six years.I love that saying. And they get better and better. I am assuming the characters are in the mid twenties. So we have no teenage angst to contend with. I'm still trying to figure Gray out though. And I understand when she says how it sometimes feel like it's 3 against her at times. This one leaves us waiting to see if one of her cases is going to hit home. It's not a bad cliffhanger but of course now I can't wait.😁😁
Book two in the trilogy. I really like the characters, chapter titles are funny, you get all the feels with a dose of sarcasm for good measure. The storyline meanders, though not as badly as in book one. The trip is always interesting. I haven't been able to put the books down, looking forward to what happens next with this crew. This book is much more steamy. Told from Franky's POV. She has her hands full dealing with her feelings and insecurities as well as those of Gray, Felix and Remy. In this book she is whisper off to work a case on a different team. No phone, no warning. The guys fond put where she is and follow. Determined to show her they are serious. She works for magical equivalent of FBI. There really isn't a lot of police work, though she is often on a case. The characters feelings really come across. I also love her familiar Percy. Trilogy must be read in order. This is a paranormal RH told from FMC POV. Ends in cliffhanger.
So, the FMC panicked in the past with her three guys when they were going to make a permanent bond, she was not ready and "kind of" left. Spoiler ahead... .

The next DAY these devoted guys pick up another girl. Not sure if that's truly a worthy trigger warning for the series, but it felt like cheating to me (was it just a misunderstanding or an actual breakup?) and there was no warning it was coming. Halfway into the series kind of feels like betrayal. The lead up to this reveal didn't really convince me the men still had big feelings for her, it never get like pining or regret, so when she asked about the rumors about this girl and they confirmed their actions, I didn't need to read more... That's a trope that is not for me! Normally I don't leave reviews for books that I give less than five stars but I looked through all the reviews and the author website and didn't see a content warning.
I liked this book. I didn’t struggle to finish it. So keep that in mind with what I say I next. I’m not sure what exactly this series is trying to be. Is it a investigative series? If so, the case they were working on felt underwhelming. It left me with a that’s it? If it was to set up underlying tension for future books, I’m not sure that clicked for me either though I could see a few threads. If this is supposed to be a romance and the crime solving is her job, then the romance felt too under developed. Some progress was made forward but it feels really tentative.
All that said, I’ll give the next book a shot when it comes out.
I’m hooked! This series is such a fun and mysterious read. Like I said about book one, Percy is my favorite!! He is such a funny familiar. I’m always smiling whenever he talks to Frankie. I’m growing more and more in love with Frankie and her boys. I’m still on the fence a bit about Gray, but that’s only because he can be a jackass at times. Even though the homicide was solved, there is another mystery brewing! Frankie and her father may be in some danger and I can’t wait to see how she handles it!
I liked this book! I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense! I also like how the harem made a lot of effort to be there for the FMC (Frankie), to show up, to support her, and to let her know without a doubt they wanted her. I liked how the characters are mature and working through their tangled past in order or have a future. You can definitely see and read some bumps they need to work on and smooth out.
Really liked reading the characters personal growth and their relationship growth.
I liked how this book actually ties both the first book and the next book!looking forward to reading that one!
So this book continues where the first one left off. I enjoy Frankie and how her character is. I like how she thinks outside the box and doesn’t take shit from anyone. Her speaking her mind and being honest with the guys makes me enjoy her character even more. So the case wraps up and ends with another one. Look forward to reading the next book in series.
This story picks up right where book 1 left off, Frankie has been loaned out to AD Wournos to check out a sign, and she had no chance to tell the guys. I really like this series. I like that Frankie stands up for herself and calls the guys on their attitudes. We get some steam - and I totally love her familiar - he’s such a fun, quirky character. I can’t wait to see how Frankie handles the next case and see her relationships continue to grow :)
Those boys just can’t help but stick to her like a barnacle. Apart from the needy trio, the mystery of the bones was a fun one - especially with Percy’s running commentary. The AD is a little creepy, and seems to have his eye of Frankie for some reason, and watching her try to get a foothold with her new colleges was interesting. Still, it’s the guys that have me rating this lower as I just find them too needy/volatile.
Another interesting read. This was fast paced and the heat was off the charts. It’s a very Interesting concept. I’m not sure it needs all the graphic heat but the dynamic of the 3 guys and her is not my usual thing. The magical mysteries are interesting. For me the heat isn’t all that necessary. I will be diving I to book 3. I do enjoy the characters. Reading outside my box is fun.
I just learned this book is RH…reverse harem. Well that explains a lot. AND it goes to show you, you are never to old to learn something new.
I am really loving thos series. It's nice to read something different than what usually read. This is a fast paced slow burn series so far, though this one has a great spicy scene. Frankie is on another case that has her cut off from her phone and some communication. That doesn't stop the boys though. I am loving watching them build back what they have. The mystery is good too. Can't wait to read next. Love Percival too. He's a riot.
This book kept me reading it all the way to the end almost nonstop. Hard to put down. Love how everything is getting figured out between Frankie and her boys, and I enjoy how important she is with the agency, but she doesn’t see it somewhat. She knows she’s important but not how really important she is.
Overall this is really the only one that focuses on crime fighting however it does seem the story is either crime fighting or relationship as the romantic story falls flat and seems forced. Overall not a fan of that portion of this story. Loved the mbi portion.
I was kind of surprised by the relationship between the four main characters, but between the interesting investigation story line, the relationship between them works. I would still like more back story on them and the world created by the author. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Book 2 is full of trilling acts and mystery. Frankie does use some of her magic to put things in some sort of order as much as she can The relationship between Frankie and her men Remy, Grayson and Felix keeps growing. She wonders if there is anyone else in Remy, Grayson and Felix lives they tell her she is it for them .
I absolutely love this series, it’s quirky and interesting, unique and entertaining. A mix of mystery solving, a cop show and loads of drama. I’m expecting some action in the next book that isn’t in the x-rated section but with the last two books that side of action is always a one I won’t ever complain about 😜 FMC is one lucky lady.
