The Millenium Diet: The Practical Guide for Rapid Weight Loss, written by Mark Davis, M.D. is a diet plan designed to help the reader/follower lose 15 to 30 pounds in the first month of following the diet, and also to change the way they eat in order to keep the weight off and become healthier. There are no recipes within the book (there are, however, Menus); this is a book that re-educates the dieter about meal structure and portion sizes, so that the diet will become a part of one's life.

Dr. Davis talks about the physiology and psychology of obesity, and in that, he references Dr. Roger Gould's notes that there are 12 types of emotional hunger for dieters to overcome, everything from those who are belittled and eat to avoid confrontation, to those who have "Peter Pan Syndrome" and do not wish to grow up. With so many types out there, the reader may find themselves falling into one of them.

The diet is a lot like the Hypoglycemic Diet, which I follow for health reasons, and is one that I am confident will cause the dieter to lose the weight that Dr. Davis has mentioned. He gives plenty of meal choices, some right down to the brand name, and many meal options for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. An example of one such meal is for Breakfast: 2 Egg Beater Eggs or equivalent, 2 pieces of thin sliced whole wheat bread, and 1 piece of fruit from his list of acceptable fruits. So, this is a diet plan that contains protein combined with "good" carbs which will satisfy the dieter until the following meal. It's hardly a diet that anyone would "starve" on, like some diets out there.

He includes a lot of "Do Eats" and "Do Not Eat" lists full of banned foods and foods that are okay to consume on the plan. The dieter will have to shy from white breads, cheese, fast foods, and have no Sugar whatsoever. Cutting out the sugar laden foods alone will cause a weight loss, because I experienced it myself when I had to cut sugar from my diet. It comes off fast and easy, and while you'll have to become a voracious label reader, it's easy to adhere to and eventually, you never even miss the sugary foods. The Millenium Plan dieter will not be as deprived as the Hypoglycemic dieter however, because alternative sugars (such as Sweet & Low) are okay to consume, as well as diet sodas and other foods that some may hate to have to give up.

This book answers some questions that dieters often ask, such as "What is the meaning of Glycemic Index", among others, and he also educates the reader on one issue that have a lot of us out there confused: How to Read Labels. His explanation on that topic will make others more confident while out grocery shopping, and checking out their food's nutritional labels.

Dr. Davis is confident that if followed, this diet will prove to be a success to the dieter, and I am inclined to agree with him. It's a completely healthy diet, and one that will also lessen the chances of such diseases such as diabetes or heart disease. The great thing about this diet is that it is easy to make a part of one's life, and continue eating the way that is outlined in the book. Not only do the pounds come off, but it's designed so that the dieter won't feel hungry (and feel inclined to cheat) while on it. For anyone needing to shed 15 to 30 pounds (and would like to do so in the first month), the Millenium Diet is definitely one to try.

The Millenium Diet states:
"The best science presently available directs us to utilize the following premises: a) you must want to lose weight, b) portion control is a must, c) an elevated protein diet with a moderate amount of carbs and low fat will increase the rapidity of weight loss." ~ page 57, The Millenium Diet

This diet counts calories and teaches correct portion size in addition to analyzing why people gain weight, both physiologically and psychologically. There is an excellent section toward the end which teaches the value of vitamins, their source, what they beneficial for and what a body deprived of one or another will do.
