The last heir to Montenegro Enterprises, Carol leaves behind her comfortable life and takes control of the corporation.

A story of fame, love, greed and betrayal, Jina S. Bazzar's 'From Fame to Ruin' is a standalone romantic adventure, set between a stunning seaside resort in Southern England and Rio de Janeiro.
Jina S. Bazzar is a Palestinian author, born and raised in Brazil. Like most writers, her love of books began at a young age. Unlike most writers, she never aspired to become one. It was only years after she became blind that she tried her hand at writing, giving voice to all the wild, rambling thoughts in her mind. She now lives in Palestine with her family, taking inspiration from the smallest things in life. When she’s not writing or networking on social media, you can find her in the kitchen, baking while listening to (often very loud) music. Find writing updates at: https://linktr.ee/AuthorJinaSBazzar
From Fame to Ruin is a 2021 romance suspense novel written by Jina S. Bazzar. I've previously read and enjoyed the author's sci-fi / fantasy series, but this book was much more in line with my traditional reading genres... and it was not easy to put down before bed each night. From kidnapping to murder and romance to revenge, the novel contains all the critical aspects of well-developed page-turning story, and I found the South American undertones lifted it even higher. What a great read!
Told in two different time periods (now and four years earlier), readers must determine what happened to cause such a rift between two young lovers who seemed perfect for one another. While we knew Carol was dealing with the death of her grandmother and an engagement based solely on saving her family company from ruin, she seemed poised for greatness. Ricardo was a famous musician who'd been dealing with false paternity claims from a former girlfriend, yet he was keen to get out of the limelight and make a happy life with Carol. Things went awry, and in between the time periods, Carol's life changed quite drastically. Ricardo's did too, but he still held on to his family. The violence, betrayal, and lies that took them away from each other and back into each other's circle were enigmatic and troubling. And I loved every minute of it.
Bazzar uses brilliant elements from the Brazilian culture and background to highlight much of the drama and lust in the story. Her details are vivid, and when things connect between the time periods, everything dances in great harmony. Many of the supporting characters weave in and out of the pages, depending on what time period is the focus, yet it all collides together when we learn just how linked each of these people truly are. I very much enjoyed the writing style and the tone set with the culture and personalities. Definitely a recommend for someone looking for a more international story and one in which coincidence can sometimes be a person's downfall. Nice work!
From Fame to Ruin is a standalone romantic thriller with a gripping story and a unique second-chance romance. The story follows Carol and Ricardo, a couple who had a whirlwind romance that ended disastrously. Years later, Carol seeks out Ricardo for help after her son is kidnapped and held for ransom. Will old feelings resurface as this couple works to find Carol’s son? Will they find her son and who kidnapped him?
Carol and Ricardo are well-developed characters, and since the story is told in dual timelines from both Carol and Ricardo’s perspectives, you really get to understand their points of view when it comes to what happened in their past and what is bringing them together in the present. The dual timelines also reveal a lot about their families, friends, careers, and the pressures put upon them by all of these things over the course of many years. Neither has had an easy life, and though they are from very different worlds, they definitely connect on a deep level.
Though Ricardo still feels the sharp sting of betrayal, he doesn’t hesitate to help the woman who broke his heart. You can tell both have been hurt and are wary of love, but their bond is still strong, and their chemistry is palpable. Both have complicated and layered stories, and their relationship is filled with obstacles, including lies, miscommunication, secrets, and more. It’s interesting to see how they handle their feelings for each other in the midst of the chaos and danger that they face.
I love the chapters that show how Carol and Ricardo met and how special their time was when they were together. These chapters, which have a more romantic and optimistic tone, contrast greatly with the chapters that take place in the present. These are suspenseful and intense as Carol and Ricardo must work together to rescue Carol’s young son who has been kidnapped and held for ransom. It’s unclear who took her son, but there are many possibilities, including scorned exes, rivals, and people with insurmountable power. I like that the story keeps you guessing for a while before revealing the villain.
I also enjoyed many of the secondary characters and how they influenced, both positively and negatively, Carol and Ricardo’s lives. Carol’s friends are fantastic and supportive, and I love the found family they create. They are more of a family than Carol’s family, and she is so lucky to have such great people in her life. Ricardo’s brother and parents are also interesting characters, as are Carol’s daughter and Ricardo’s friends.
I enjoyed this story and think readers of romantic suspense with a second-chance romance will enjoy it too. There are some graphic parts, so I would check the trigger warning. Scenes that include violence, death, overdosing, and more might prove triggering for some readers. Thanks so much to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a romantic thriller told through different POVs. There is kidnapping involved, stalking, revenge and even murder. There are time jumps which I didn't exactly love but there are reasons for them. The story is predictable but never the less engaging. I would consider it a second chance romance. Carol can be a bit uptight at times so beware she may get on your nerves 😆 Overall this is not my usual read but solidly written.
*ARC provided by author, this is my honest review.*
Newly famous star RJ Santos is trying to navigate Heathrow Airport. The ever-present paparazzi have been covering him like a blanket. He just wanted to be left alone. Hat pulled down, he tried to become a face in the crowd. As he people watched, he saw a beautiful red head walking by. When their eyes met, RJ felt an electrifying sensation. The lovely lady, Carol, was at the airport to catch a flight home. She had to assume control of the family business. RJ approaches her and attempts to strike up a conversation. Their flight was cancelled due to bad weather. What could she do until the next day?
Carol accepts RJ’s invitation to spend the evening at a local resort. They become better acquainted over dinner and after dinner they deepened their connection. The next morning they decide to spend the weekend at the lodge. They begin to fall in love but the weekend is over. Carol must go home and meet with lawyers and RJ will go to his aunt’s house. Is that magical connection over? Can they find a way to continue this new relationship?
Jina S.Bazzar tells the story of RJ and Carol with flashbacks and current events. Both Carol and RJ are likeable characters. As the book progresses you really want to see them happy together. The story line is good and it is an easy book to read. The decline of Carol’s family business is tragic, her attempt to salvage the business is a tangled mess. It does little to enhance the story and could probably be eliminated.
A secret weekend with a gorgeous rockstar is dreamy and romance lovers will thoroughly enjoy this book.
00From Fame to Ruin is a romantic thriller told in alternating timelines and dual POVs. The story follows Carol and Ricardo. It seemed meant-to-be when they first met, and their connection was instantly palpable, magical, even. But apparently, fate had a different plan for them, and they parted ways terribly. Years after, they met again when Carol sought Ricardo's help. Will this unfortunate circumstance bring the two of them back together? Will this be the hardest thing they will have to go through?
Reading books, I realized that the first chapter is always critical to make the readers interested. After reading the first chapter, I got hooked in an instant. There were questions in my mind and, I wanted answers. So I continued reading until I finished unconsciously. I fell in love with this book for this reason.
I liked the balance between the romance and the suspense here, enough to keep the readers' interest. Carol is a kick-ass character of a woman, and I love her. While Ricardo, on the other hand, I admit I wanted to kick at some point for being an ass. 😂 I was glad he was able to redeem himself.
Recommended to those into second-chance romance and those who love thrillers/suspense.
I’m a major fan of Jina S. Bazzar’s fantasy trilogy, so when I discovered she’d written From Fame to Ruin, a Romance Mystery, I was excited to see what magic she’d conjured up this time. And I was not disappointed. The lives of the main characters, Carol, an heiress to a family business, and Ricardo, a rock star, develop over a four-year period, told in alternating timelines. A format that builds suspense and kept me captivated, wondering how a passionate relationship that seemed destined ended on such a sour note. The crucial question I asked as I read was, is there hope? Will they ever overcome their pain, relinquish stubbornness, and come together again? There are many external forces driving them apart, antagonists with personal grudges, some deadly.
The story starts four years after the two met, after Carol’s son, Gabriel’s kidnapping. Once an heiress to a forsaken family business, Carol’s only choice to meet the kidnapper’s demand ($25 million dollars) is Ricardo, who she hasn’t spoken to since the unpleasant end of their relationship. Though both harbor distrust, they come together to save Carol’s four-year-old son.
The alternating timeline offers information piece by piece. A bigger picture unfolds to what transpired between Carol and Ricardo, their family and friends, and their enemies. Who kidnapped Carol’s son? Who has the most to gain? Whose grudge is greatest? The author flawlessly weaves twists and turns to the climatic end. Action, romance, mystery, murder, and suspense made this a thrilling read.
I highly recommend From Fame to Ruin and look forward to reading more of Mrs. Bazzar’s stories.
The first book of the year!! And what a way to start the year off!
Here we follow Carol and Ricardo. Carol is the sole heir to a broken empire and Ricardo is the newest and hottest celebrity in the rock world. They met years earlier and their passion hit hard and heavy. However, their past catches up to them and destroys their love. Some years have gone by and when a psychopath decides it is payback time, Carol is faced with an impossible choice....save her son or sell her life. She goes to Ricardo for help. He doesn't want anything to do with her, but he finds himself agreeing.
This book had me at page one. Honestly, I could hardly put this down!! I had to know what was going to happen next!! That ending???? Fantastic.
I did love the jumping back and forth in time. I get nervous it throws off the pace of the story and plot, but the author did a good jump with the jumping around. It added to the suspense aspect for sure. It made me want to read faster.
Carol and Ricardo had a lot of issues. You could see that from their first meeting in the past, but they are good souls and I really wanted them to work it out. It took years and a terrible situation to happen, but it does happen and I have hope for them. I liked both of them and I loved how complex they were. I really, really wanted to give both of them a shake here! Especially when Ricardo wouldn't even give her a minute to try and explain. UGH.
The biggest part of the story is the suspense aspect. I loved the romance, but I'm glad it didn't take over the suspense aspect of the story. It was a nice balance.
I know I said it before...but ooooo that ending and reveal was so good.
In the end, I really enjoyed this. I loved the characters and watching them redeem themselves, move on from the past, find their love again, and save her son. What a great way to start the year. I'll give this 4 stars!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ecopy in exchange for my honest review. I beta read this book for the author a year or so ago now and when the author sent it to me for this final review I had completely forgotten everything. Once I started reading again I kept having these oh yeah I remember that now moments but it was like I was reading this for the first time again.
This is a standalone romantic thriller and it's told from alternating points of view as well as alternating timelines. I also want to point out some trigger warnings. There is violence, overdose and child abuse among others so be aware of that going in.
I liked the alternating POVs between Ricardo and Carol. We get to learn a lot about them and everything they've gone through as well as why they made some of the decisions they made. I also enjoyed the alternating timelines. In the past you learn how Carol and Ricardo meet and what happens between them and in the present you see how they navigate things. I will say that in the beginning the pacing wasn't as steady going when switching between the timelines. The past was very mellow and steady, and the present was fast paced. I understand why it was this way but it just kind of threw me off a little bit I guess. I found myself really wanting to get back to the present chapters.
I loved the found family aspect. All of the people Carol surrounded herself with were amazing. I wouldn't mind reading books about them in the future. There were some things that were briefly talked about in this book that I would have liked to have seen something happen with but that's just a personal preference thing. I like to see everyone get what they deserve. I'm trying to be as vague as possible because I don't want to spoil anything. The only other thing that would have made it even better would have been to get a little bit more of Ricardo and Carol in the present together.
I don't typically read a whole lot of romantic suspense but I really enjoyed this story. I feel like the romance and the suspense were well balanced and I recommend you give this book a read if it sounds like something you would be interested in.
At the beginning of the novel, a child is kidnapped, and so begins a convoluted plot of past vendettas, jilted lovers, paternity issues, attempted murder, dodgy business dealings and secrecy. Lots and lots of secrecy. When the main characters meet, they are in an airport, waiting for a flight and ruminating over their personal problems. Carol Montenegro is in the claws of a powerful Brazilian family: Senator Armando expects her to marry his grandson in exchange for his help in a court case. Ricardo Jonson Santos is a famous singer in a band who is also being taken to court by his ex-girlfriend. Destiny draws Carol and Ricardo together, and they spend a few dreamy days together. Fate pulls them apart, but the kidnapping forces them together again. It is difficult to give away any spoilers, so it’s best if I just explain that each chapter either jumps back four years to when the main characters met for the first time or returns to the present as the search is on to find the kidnapped child. The author seamlessly expands the two story timelines and we learn more and more of the intricate plot. I felt as if I discovered something unexpected in each chapter, and each new discovery compelled me to keep reading. Would the child be found? Would he be alive? What would become of Carol and Ricardo? But there is so much more to the tale than that. Read it. You won’t be disappointed.
From Fame to Ruin by Jina S. Bazzar Published: December 21, 2021 Jina S. Bazzar I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.
Jina S. Bazzar is a freelance writer, a blogger, a mother, a baker, a chocolate fiend, a coffee enthusiast, and sometimes a poet. A wanderer in this vast world, She is just another body with a passion for the written word. There is no boundary she can't cross, no limit she can't push; her mind is her passport, her thoughts her mode of transportation.
“I have everything I’ve ever wanted right here.”
Ricardo is a rockstar, with hordes of fans that scream his name everywhere he goes. Carol is famous in her own way, for entirely different reasons. When a blizzard provides them a weekend filled with romance, laughs, and seemingly endless connection, the last thing either ever expected was a reality to slap them in the face.
This story was told in dual timelines, alternating the past with the present. I found the alternating timelines exciting and engaging.
The first portion of this novel was a slow burn for me, but as things sped up and pieces started falling into place, the pacing picked up, and the intensity magnified significantly.
I enjoyed the combination of the two lifestyles, fame, and infamy, in this story. I also found Ricardo and Carol charming.
Carol is resistant. She is strong and intelligent, and she follows her heart no matter the cost. I enjoyed her ad a leading lady. Her storyline is filled with heartbreak, yet she had such a sweetness to her character that I found it endearing.
Ricardo was the perfect mix of cocky rockstar and the sweet boy next door. He has such loyalty inside of him and a desire to be seen for who he is, not just the persona he presents on stage.
Together, Ricardo and Carol present a beautiful pair. And I found their journey to figure things out both exciting and challenging.
This was a unique storyline, and I got pulled further into the plot with every page I read. This is a complicated love story, but it is well told.
The details are so important, and when everything clicks and the twists come together, the spiral gets intense. This was a great read. The characters, the location, and the details are fantastic. This was a labor of love.
I loved the combination of music with the intensity of a thriller. This could be an excellent series! Someone call Netflix!
As a Book Reviewer I received a free ebook copy of From Fame to Ruin by Jina S. Bazzar and this is my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor any review. From Fame to Ruin is not Jina S. Bazzar’s first novel, but it is her first New Adult and College Romance novel.
From Fame to Ruin is a novel about two people who meet and fall in love, but Carol wasn’t counting on falling in love. This was just supposed to be a weekend fling – something to take her mind off the problems she had to face and deal with when the weekend was over.
Four years later, Carol is facing another crisis and believes the only person she can turn to is the man she walked away from after a weekend she never forgot.
This novel is written in two different time frames and two different settings. It is written in the two main characters’ Points of View, but there is one chapter written in another character’s Point of View. From Fame to Ruin is a book about love, betrayal, misunderstanding, and crime. It has romance, danger, and suspense.
The main characters, Carol and Ricardo, are easy to like and care about. Though I found the pacing of the plot a bit slow sometimes and thought the story could have been shorter, I cared enough about the characters to keep reading. When the crime was committed and the criminal became part of the story line, I was definitely hooked and turning pages as I tried to figure out who the criminal was.
Ms. Bazzar writes deep, interesting characters and a very thorough storyline.
I do want to caution my more sensitive readers. This novel contains some profanity and some sexual scenes between unmarried people, though the sexuality is not explicit or detailed.
If you like a complicated storyline that includes suspense, mystery, and romance, you will like From Fame to Ruin by Jina S. Bazzar. Ms. Bazzar is a talented writer and I give From Fame to Ruin 4 stars.
A curious novel that happens in one of the cities of my country. I absorbed each chapter of this book faster and it was hard to stop before the end. Thank the author and Voracious Readers for this reading.
When I read the blurb for From Fame to Ruin, the book caught my interest. I love reading romance and suspense, so when I get a book that combines them, I usually read them. So, it was a given that I would read From Fame to Ruin, and oh boy, am I glad I did!!
From Fame to Ruin is the story of Ricardo and Carol. They met at Heathrow Airport, and after their flight to Rio is canceled, they spend a passion-filled weekend together. When they land in Rio, Carol’s fiance (well wannabe) meets her and destroys whatever relationship was forming between them. Fast forward four years later. Carol’s almost 3-year-old son is kidnapped when he is out with his nanny. The kidnappers are demanding a ransom that Carol cannot afford. But she knows who can. She approaches Ricardo for the money, and after that, all hell breaks loose. Who kidnapped Gabe, and will he come back alive? Will Carol and Ricardo forgive past hurts and move forward with their lives? And why has the kidnapper targeted Carol?
From Fame to Ruin is a fast-paced book that starts off running and doesn’t stop. I am glad that it is fast-paced because any other pacing wouldn’t have done the book justice. There is no lag which I was very thankful for.
From Fame to Ruin goes back and forth in the timeline before merging towards the end of the book. The author was able to seamlessly go from 4 years ago to the present with no hiccup. I was very pleasantly surprised. She also clarified if you were in the present or the past at the start of each chapter. So there was no confusion about if you were in the past or the present.
I liked Carol, but man, she grated on my nerves during parts of the book. I understood why she was so upset with Ricardo. I would have been too. But her hatred was over much during crucial parts of the book. I wanted to reach into the book, shake her and say, “Dudette, just let him help.”
I liked Ricardo too. But, I felt that he jumped to conclusions and assumed things way too fast. I get that his past relationship hurt him but still. And I did want to smack his face for what he said and did to Carol at the music studio. Unfreakingcalled for.
The real MVP in the book is Otto. I hope that he gets his HEA in another book!! The talk he gave to both Carol and Ricardo was fantastic, and I wished he had done it way earlier in the book.
As the author warned in the blurb, there is child abuse in the book’s first half. The author didn’t go into how Gabe was abused, but she described the aftermath. My heart broke for him, and I will admit, I cried.
I did figure out two of the people who were involved in the kidnapping. The third, though, was random. I honestly thought it was going to be another person (who was mentioned in the book).
The end of From Fame to Ruin was action-packed. The author was able to tie everything together and give an insight into why a very powerful man protected Carol. And the epilogue was one of the cutest that I have read to date!!!
I would recommend From Fame to Ruin to anyone over the age of 21. There are sexual situations (actual sex is not described), violence, and language.
This is the first domestic, romantic thriller with alternating timelines that I’ve read in a very long time. In “From Fame to Ruin” we follow two characters, Ricardo and Carol, from when they meet at an airport terminal nearly 4 years in the past, to their current predicament in the present, where Carol’s son has been kidnapped, and her and Ricardo are thrust back together once again. Together, they try to uncover who would do such a thing, and why, all while the reader is given clues as to who it might be based on their past together. It’s a really interesting way to present the information, and the author does a great job of making sure the reader doesn’t get lost between past and present with clearly labeled chapter headings. Unfortunately, seeing how Ricardo and Carol are together in the present negated a lot of the sweetness that I otherwise may have felt from their romantic week together in the past. Which is where the book spends almost half of its time.
Reviews like this are hard to write because you have to be so, so careful not to say something that may spoil the ending. I will say I guessed some key elements very early on in the book, which is my fault because then it made me want to speed the story along just to see if I was right (I was, mostly). But that’s all I’ll say about that. However, whenever you have an alternating timeline that shows that two characters have not just drifted apart, but actively dislike each other, and then flash back to them falling in love, some of the magic is automatically lost to me. And, sadly, I had a hard time liking Carol for big chunks of the book because of how the timelines jumped. Eventually, you understand why she and her friends treat Ricardo the way they do (though I don’t really agree with the secrets Ricardo’s own father kept from him), but those revelations come a bit late. But hey! At least this book really had me feeling something! And while I liked Ricardo and thought he got a raw deal from most people who refused, blatantly, to see or understand the situation he was coming from, my real favorite character was Otto. He was such a refreshing voice of reason between these two romantic leads!
The plot was well thought out, as evidenced by how many characters and smaller plotlines the author is able to weave into the bigger, inciting incident that reunites our main characters. Even though there are a lot of characters, I never really felt like I couldn’t remember who was who, even if I would have liked some characters to have more page time so I could get a better sense of them. Still, writing it this way allowed for the author to place really compelling red herrings throughout the novel to help add to the mystery around who actually threatened Carol and her family. I must say I enjoyed the present chapters more just because the pacing was much faster, but having that languid, easy pace of the past chapters so the reader can really see how far these characters have come in a short time gave a nice dichotomy to the book that eases the reader into a lot of tension. Personally, that set up kept me always wanting to read “one more chapter” so I could get back to the present faster.
All in all, I enjoyed the book! I’ve read several of this authors’ works now and she always does a great job with pacing and character development. Each of her stories and the voices she gives her characters are unique, and this book is no different. And while things like the miscommunication tropes for tension purposes are not my personal favorite, and even with how much I was annoyed by Carol at times (which is why this is getting 4 stars from me), I still enjoyed this novel and am happy with how the story ended. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys romantic thrillers, and thanks to the author for sending me a copy for an honest review!
tw: stalking, mention of murder, death, coerced engagement, child abuse, kidnapping, drug overdose, drug use, car accident, rape, gun violence
I have been writing reviews since 2016 roughly and yet I never know how to start them. Sometimes the words click and I’m able to come up with a good introduction. But normally that happens when I dislike a book. I often have a harder time coming up with introductions for books I really liked. You would think I would have figured out the secret by now but I haven’t. So I’ll just jump right in.
I really enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I was going to. I expected a gritty and tense novel, sure, but not to this extent. The amount of angst and tension in this book between the MCs was insane. There were a couple times I had to just set my Kindle down because the angst was too much. I literally felt like jumping out of my body because the angst was so much. But it was a good thing, I promise.
I loved the way the book was written. It was told with the past and present with both Carol and Ricardo getting equal amounts of page time so we got an idea of everything that happened between them and what was causing the crazy amount of angst we were experiencing. We experienced everything, the tension, the passion, the angst. Everything!
Both MCs were great on their own but oh my lord, they were so damn stubborn. I didn’t really have a favorite, I liked them both equally. There were so many times I just wanted to smack the heck out of them and force them to just communicate.
Overall, this was a great book. While the angst was a bit much at times, I was hooked on this book and truly didn’t want to put it down even though I had to several times. It was so different then what I normally read and I can’t wait to see what else this author has in store.
Here is another book that kept me up all night! While some people find flipping between time points disorienting, I loved that about Fame to Ruin. I had no problem following through the events of the present day and those of four years earlier, and the chapters were laid out in such a way that everything made sense just at the right time. (But before getting there, I had so many questions, okay?)
The romance was well done and not overly cheesy — something I initially was wary about, with Ricardo being a musician and how that trope tends to play out in general. But Carol and Ricardo came to life on the pages as two flawed yet very real people, and that was consistently demonstrated throughout the story. I actually felt like I was one of their mutual friends who was exasperated on the regular by their arguments and their decisions, and I wanted to bop their heads together on more than one occasion, haha!
And Jina’s writing is just lovely. It falls into that relatively simple, evocative prose category that I enjoy, but with a strong plot and solid dialogue. The book was thrilling and suspenseful as promised, and the romance was beautifully weaved through it all.
This book is in Rio. This book beings kinda creepy with a stalker watching a lady named Maria. They kidnapped a kid she was watching. Then the book jumps to four years earlier in London. RJ Santos is a rockstar, and I'm still trying to get a read on him and what he has to do with the beginning of this book.
Jumping to Carol, she is flying home to Rio to take over her family's failing business. We jump back to the present day with Carol. Carol is working her dream job with advertising and working with a man named Marco.
We jump back to RJ in London four years earlier. In this book, I am jumping around so much I have no idea what characters have to do with what. I kinda wish it would give us the main characters and the current or past all at once. We're back in the airport with RJ and Carol, waiting for their flight. Something about Carol and a marriage contract to win a case against her family business.
Present-day in Rio. Carol gets a letter about her kidnapped son a random note and calls Maria to confirm. Then we jump back again in time to the airport. The suspense is killing me, and also, why can't the story stay at a one-time point. It is nice to see Carol gets a backbone, and I wonder how her choices four years ago affect her circumstance present day.
This book does get more strange as it goes. This time we jump to San Paulo present-day with Josh Santos, the older brother to RJ from the airport. With all the jumping back and forth, we only get pieces of this story at a time, and some of it is repeated.
This story gets more twisted about halfway through, but getting there is kind of slow, with the bouncing back and forth. The characters and the interconnections are definitely suspenseful. I have to honestly say I am struggling to read thru this story. It is very twisted, has very dark themes, and is kinda a disoriented story. We get more answers to answer the suspense, and both Ricardo and Carol have a significant miscommunication issue.
Okay, once I got to the end of the book, and all the mystery and suspense were solved, I understood the reasons for the jumping back and forth in the timeline. The author did involve more characters. Sometimes, things were from their perspective and applied to solving the mystery behind the main storyline. This book definitely fell under romantic suspense, with each piece bringing you closer to the end of the story. This story was dark, tragic, and heartbreaking. I like the groveling food and twinges of humor in the tale among the jumps backs and sad moments. However, Carol and RJ finally get a happy ending which was quite surprising to find out who was behind all the problems.
I really struggled with this book trying to decipher who was essential to the main plot and who wasn't as each character was presented in the past or present. There were a lot of names in this; who did it? It took me most of the book to piece it together; the twist was surprising when I did.
From Fame to Ruin is told from different points of view. It is also told in different times, past and present. From Fame to Ruin starts off with a bang and never lets up from page one to the last.
A little boy is kidnapped. The mother turns to the father for help in finding her son. Mother and Father met a few years back on a train and spent a few wonderful days together before they had to go their separate ways back to their own lives.
When the mother contacted the father after learning she was pregnant he thought she was trying to run a scam on him. He didn’t believe her when she told him she was pregnant with his child.
After her son was kidnapped she had no one else to turn to. Once again faith has thrown these two lovers together again. Is their love meant to be? Can they overcome everything that has transpired between them to find their son before time runs out? Can they let bygones be bygones? Is this their second chance for love? Who took their son and why? Is he still alive? Where is he?
From Fame to Ruin has many secrets between its page that it reveals slowly over time. Once I opened From Fame to Ruin to that first page I was drawn into its world leaving my own behind. Yes, when that first page was turned I was hooked. I must admit I was sad to see the end. Although I was racing to the end to see how it was all going to play out.
From Fame to Ruin pulled out lots of different emotions for me. There were times when I was sad, frustrated, and angry but there were some happy moments as well.
There were quite a few shocking twists that left me bewildered as to why and I never gave any thought to them happening beforehand either. I wanted to give someone a great big shake so many times throughout.
The mystery and suspense alone were enough to keep me on the edge of my seat trying to figure it all out. I liked going back in the past and learning how Ricardo and Carol met and learning more about them and their lives.
I would recommend From Fame to Ruin to anyone who loves second chance love stories as well as romantic suspense stories! So grab your copy of From Fame to Ruin today!
I really enjoyed this story though romantic suspense isn't my usual taste. But...rock-star. My weakness.
There's such a lot going on right from the off. Carol is facing trying to save her family empire and get out of an arranged marriage. Ricardo has just finished with a thoroughly unpleasant legal situation with an ex and is feeling – well – bitter about it. When they meet the tension sizzles, the chemistry jumps off the page and I was sure I was in for a five star read. Then we jump forward four years and its all change, Carol and Ricardo are not only estranged after all that promise, but actively hate each other.
I have a couple of niggles about the novel. I kept forgetting how different characters fitted within the story, there were such a lot of them belonging to all the multi stranded plots of course, and my other issue, the constant past/present format didn't help. I'm really not a fan of alternating timelines, just as I get one timeline straight in my head we jump forward, and its as if the characters are totally different. Then we jump back again and all is perfect for a while. In this book its happening constantly, and I did struggle. Its a personal issue, many folk aren't bothered by this and of course that will make a perfect read for them. Its really a case of me not the story.
There are multiple plots all going on at the same time, issues linking to the past, betrayals and circumstances that affect how the characters behave and felt, and slowly they were joining up. While I understood why those betrayals etc shaped their decisions it didn't stop me from getting angry, wanting to shake them. That's good really, shows how real those people felt. I really liked the characters, even as I was angry at them. I like a story that raises emotions in me, makes me feel the story is real. I love a story that doesn't depend on one basic plot too, but brings in many sides to it so that was perfect even if it did lead to confusion and a bit of back tracking at times...
I so wanted things to come right between Carol and Ricardo, but the greater part of the novel felt like they were angry still, and I wish they'd talked sooner. I'm glad for the epilogue though it seemed a huge jump forward in time, missing a big gap that I'd have liked expanded a bit.
Stars: Four, a story I really enjoyed even though I was a bit lost by the changing timelines.

From Fame to Ruin was such an interesting book, as it's told between two different time lines, there is something constantly going on. There is never a dull moment!
‘I’ve never been capable of reasonable, coherent thoughts where you’re concerned.’
This book follows Carol and Ricardo from when they first meet to about four years later. The reader is thrust straight into the action as we discover how Carol’s son was kidnapped, but it is an anonymous narrator, and we are left wondering who they are. When Carol receives a ransom note asking for 25 million, she has no choice but to go to her ex-lover, Ricardo. After their short time together, Ricardo, a former rock star, wants nothing to do with Carol, as he thinks she was using him. It’s clear from their interaction that there are still feelings, and some form of closure is needed. Ricardo comes back into Carol’s life and tries to reconnect with her and subsequently, her children. Whilst trying to uncover the truth behind the kidnapping and any connections it may have to Ricardo and Carol’s lives, there is a back and forth between the two characters, as they decide whether to rekindle their romance or not.
‘Sometimes, people make mistakes, and they have to fight harder for what they want.’
The present day timeline is set in Rio, and the story of their first meeting is set in Brighton. Carol is due to go home to Rio for a court trial to do with her grandmother’s business. She is being blackmailed into a marriage with the son of another rich family, in exchange for help to win the case. Whilst she’s waiting for her flight, she meets Ricardo, who is instantly attracted to her. Carol doesn’t seem to recognise him and after their flight is cancelled, they head to a hotel and spend a magical weekend together.
‘But I need to say this, to let you know up front that I’ll do all I can to show you what we have is worth fighting for.’
These two intertwining timelines reveal important details at the right times and keep the reader hooked. I was rooting for these characters to solve the mystery successfully, whilst sorting their relationship and past issues out. It’s difficult to say anymore without revealing the plot of the book, but for someone who doesn’t tend to read thrillers, I really enjoyed this one and recommend it!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Carol is the heir to the Montenegro fortune. RJ Santos is a famous rock star. A chance encounter at the airport leads to a weekend of passion. Even though they would like to continue the relationships, unforeseen events set them on different paths.
Unknown to RJ, Carol gives birth to twins - a boy and a girl.
Four years later, Carol's little boy is kidnapped. She approached RJ to help her with money to pay the ransom. But she never expected him to discover he is the father and become involved in her life.
They are both angry about events from the past, not realising a simple misunderstanding and lack of communication caused it.
Little Gabe is returned safely after paying the ransom. Still, RJ fears another kidnapping attempt because the kidnapper may now know he is the father and attempt to kidnap the sister.
RJ keeps on visiting and trying to mend their relationship. However, Carol is still hurt and angry, leading to much conflict between the two.
Will they manage to mend their relationship and find happiness together at last?
The author uses different viewpoints to build suspense through the self-talk of the characters. We see the fate of Gabe, with chapters written from the perspective of the kidnapper. It adds to the tension since the readers gain information Carol and RJ doesn't have.
Trigger Warnings: Profanity | Kidnapping | Violence | Death | Sexual Scenes
This book is a romance-thriller mash-up that starts with a kidnapping and leans heavily toward the action. Set in Brazil, Carol’s three-year-old son is kidnapped and held for $25 million in ransom. Warned not to go to the police, she approaches her old flame Ricardo for help. He can afford the payment, but they have a lot of bad blood between them that frequently boils over and scalds.
The chapters of the book alternate between Carol’s present desperation to save her son’s life, and four years earlier when Carol and Ricardo had a whirlwind romance after meeting in an airport. At first, I found the 4-year-old romance chapters less interesting (though extremely well-written). However, as the story progresses, the past starts clarifying the emotional damage in the present. The two timelines are expertly interwoven and make perfect sense as the story comes together.
Perhaps the best part of the story is the characterization. Except for the kidnapper who is sociopathic, every character is nuanced with a distinct personality. The children in the story are pure delight. Carol and Ricardo share the story’s pov (with a few exceptions), and they’re richly drawn with believable emotions and motivations. I found Ricardo and Carol likable and empathetic though both suffer from emotional wounds and are sizzling mad at each other, often to the point of being cruel.
I read the whole book in one airplane ride while everyone else snoozed around me. The pace steadily picks up until this page-turner comes to its explosive ending. Highly recommended to readers of thrillers who enjoy a well-crafted book with great characters and a touch of romance.
Wow, okay. This book was one heck of a rollercoaster ride! Let's get down to business!
What did I like? - Dual timeline. It was beautifully crafted! If I had to pick, I was a lot more interested in the present events, but the past bestowed a clearer picture of the turn of events. - A strong heroine. Gosh, I love when female main characters are strong and independent! Carol was an inspiration. It still baffles me how she maneuvered all that through her life. - The author's writing style and imagery were just... *chef's kiss* Jina Bazzar is a wordsmith, and I am going to leave it at that, haha. - - Also, a major plus point for including TWs! - Wanted to mention the book cover, it's so aesthetic!
What could've been better? -There were parts where I found myself confused by the sheer amount of characters and their names. It was easy to get lost between Noel, Nelson, and Nicolau even though the author tried to distinguish them a few times in the story itself. -
Overall, it is a good book. Thank you so much to the author for reaching out and sending across a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. :)
This book introduces you to Carol and Ricardo, meeting at an airport; seemingly destined for each other.
With "From Fame to Ruin", Jina S. Bazzar presents us with a standalone romantic thriller. The story begins in the United Kingdom, alternates between the past there and four years later in Brazil; it is always clear where and when you and the characters are. The story is cleverly elaborated, comprises interesting turns, and has a great flow. Jina S. Bazzar introduces each character with care, providing them with sufficient depth for their respective relevance; character traits are authentic, the feelings and struggles obvious. I was drawn into the story right away - as an invisible rather close 'guest' to the events. I could easily envision the characters and locations - the smells and sounds are woven into the story. I had a great time reading "From Fame to Ruin". It is a story that gets to you, a story that makes you start analysing what you would have done or lets you put on your detective hat and solve the crime.
This is for you if you like thrillers with psychological- aspects, likeable characters, surprises, a moderate amount of romance, and excellent storytelling.
What if surviving a murder attempt, a heartbreak, and the loss of the family business wasn’t the hardest thing you ever faced?
The author’s vivid and commendable writing makes each scene come true to life.
The plot keeps the readers engrossed with fantastic characterisation, storyline, drama, mystery and suspense.
The author is a master at describing complex human emotions beautifully. The plot has been developed really well, with just the right amount of twists and turns. The Story takes a smooth transition between the past and the current happenings.
The author not only embraces a love story but also involves heartbreak and the importance of second chances in a person's life.
Carol’s rollercoaster emotional journey, determination, and courage are rightly captured.
You can feel the eagerness and excitement while reading and how the mystery unfolds is mesmerizing.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Wow this started off with a kick in the pants on the first page of a planned kidnapping, which leave the reader clueless to why the nanny or the child was important. Only the reader want to that way long as Jina S. Bazzar takes us on a amazing dramatic read of two people lives. Years ago two stranger met was it all just a fling or was fate interfering? At the time Carol had no clue just whom the man at the airport was, Ricardo found it a blessing and a curse to be un-recognized. Carol wasn't thrilled to return back in to the family fold to say the least but with the disorder of the family estate, she had little choose once the burden fell on her shoulders. Ricardo wasn't about to fall for a another scam, what was the woman even thinking, where was the Carol he spent the weekend falling for. Was he so jaded from his fame that he was willing to deny what is going on around him? Once they get the boy back, has he blown any real chance. Some people are just spoiled, they walk over innocence people and think money can buy any and everything.
This book is one of my fav romantic suspense read of this year. I loved how author jumped to past and present, giving us the suspense on how characters are connected and how it contribute to the main story. The story was going We have mystery, romance, drama and a great plotline having a perfect amount of twists and turns and also having dark themes.
I loved each characters especially Carol. The side characters were great. At some points it was hard for me to understand which character was which and it was kinda slow paced but that slowness is needed to build up the story. Apart from that, this book is a great read and author's writing style and way of expressing emotions? Amazing!
I was contacted by the author, to read and review this book, all opinions are my own. This book is told from different POVs and different timelines. I must admit although I've been complaining about the dual timelines, I have to say it was interesting going into this story and having that present, especially to give a wider perspective of the events. Moreover, I must say the writing style helped with the overall enjoyment of the book. I'd also like to congratulate the author for adding the TW. Overall it is a good and easy book to read, I did have some confusion at times with the characters names, and the overall amount of characters, but I do think that's my own fault.
