Whenever I move to a new community, I always like to read about the local folklore and, of course, ghost stories; I think it's a great way to learn about the history and culture of a new place. Sadly, my move to Aberdeen was badly disrupted by the outbreak of the dread Covid and though I've been here for a few years, I've never really felt connected to the community; something which I rather bitterly regret. I didn't even get much of a chance to do my usual tradition due to libraries closing and the like; and by the time they reopened, I was neck deep in research for my degree.

Anyway, I was excited when I came upon Graeme Milne's name and decided to pick up this book - better late than never, right? (cue: Ghostbusters II's Titanic scene). And ... yes, this is true. "Aberdeen's Haunted Heritage" is a pretty standard, but good, collection of local ghost tales. It is spritely written, and Mr. Milne's personal voice comes through very clearly. Few of the haunting stories are particularly dramatic, though there are a few which definitely jump out - and I was happy/worried to find one of my favorite local pubs listed!

That being said, there are a few issues: mainly, there are numerous typos throughout the book and that's something I always find rather distracting. I didn't check to see if this was self published or from a local publishing house when I picked it up, but a good copy editor would have been beneficial (watch as I now make every typo in my review!). Also I should note that I read this on Kindle and there's every possibility that this issue isn't present in the physical release.

Still, if you want to learn more about the history of Aberdeen, and local ghost folklore, definitely give it a try. I'd love to sit down with the author over a few pints and pick his brain; one suspects he had many more tales, some of them personal, that didn't make their way into this volume.
