This book started with a challenge - Can you add 10 books to your TBR from authors from backgrounds different than your own? Challenge accepted!

Bibliophile is a collection of books authored by BIPOC. It also shares reading locations, BIPOC illustrators, BIPOC book influencers, and BIPOC bookstores.

As a book influencer, I have seen quite a few books that turned into book lists. Even I can't read them fully because they are just so boring. However, Bibliophile: Diverse Spines went so far above and beyond. It had drawings of stacks of books instead of a long list of black and white titles. It was amazing! The book also had very short little blurbs about some of the books, and it was very easy to select 10 reads. If you want to see what books I selected, check out my feed!

Overall, this was simply the best "book list" book that I have come across.

Are you one of those readers whose reading list is dominated either by white authors or by your country’s authors? (Really? In 2021? What world do you live in?) If yes, it’s high time you take corrective action. If no, kudos to you. And here’s a book to ensure that your horizons expand even further.

One brilliant bookish line that this book takes inspiration from (and even mentions in the introduction) is an upgraded version of Grace Lin’s famous Ted talk moral: make sure your bookshelf is both a window and a mirror. We must read to see two kinds of worlds: our own, and the ones we can’t imagine. We must read to see ourselves reflected, and to get an insight into other people’s lives. That’s why we must stop “whitewashing” our bookshelves and fill it with vibrant colour. And if you don’t know where to begin on this quest, this brilliant book will provide you ample inspiration. (And a great deal of perspiration too, because your TBR is going to go haywire after reading this! 😄)

As the title suggests, the book is like a one-stop list of books by BIPOC authors from across the world. As the cover suggests, these book suggestions come to you in the form of illustrated spine stacks, organised by book genres, with each stack containing about 25-30 book titles! But this isn’t all. In addition to these awesome spine stacks, you will also get interesting book-related content such as writing rooms, libraries, book stores, literary influencer recommendations, cover art, and so on. A lot of this secondary content is America-centric, but the rest of us still get enough meat to chew upon. It was an insightful experience to hear from BIPOC authors, influencers, bookstore owners, cover designers, and various other bookish people from varied backgrounds. The suggestions cover all possible genres from fiction to nonfiction, prose and poetry. I never expected it to include even cookbooks and essay collections! The range of genres included is mind-blowing and enough to satiate the most stringent of bibliophiles.

I had assumed that this will be a very quick read, but I never expected the book spine stacks to motivate me to such an extent. I felt like taking an in-depth look at each cover/spine illustration and check out the book on Goodreads. Thankfully, more than half of the featured book spines were already present in my TBR, thank God for small mercies. So the only main negative point of this book is that your TBR is in grave danger. But I won’t be docking any stars for this.😁

This will be a great coffee table book in any bibliophile’s house, and a wonderful gift for every woke bibliophile who wants to ensure that his/her reading is diverse in the true sense of the word.

Thank you, NetGalley and Chronicle Books, for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

When I reviewed the first Bibliophile volume, I mentioned how amazed I was that it recommended some books that I’d never heard of, given that I personally feel like I’ve heard of everything. Bibliophile: Diverse Spines is shorter than its predecessor, so before I even began it I again assumed that I would’ve heard of every book featured here. I was wrong again! So that in itself is great. This particular volume focuses on books by BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ writers, and it offers plenty of fantastic-sounding reading suggestions as well as profiles of authors and mini-articles on indie bookstores. As always with Jane Mount books, the art is beautiful and will make you covetous of every book illustrated here. This is a great resource and a lot of fun to read. Very highly recommended!

One of the problems with reading a book that suggests good books is that you end up wanting to read all of the books! Especially when there are great books you've already read next to books you haven't heard of yet, it makes you want to immediately go to and start reading these new amazing books! As someone for whom the realization that I will someday die was MUCH easier to digest than the realization that I won't be able to read all of the books forever and ever and ever, this sort of book poses a delicious dilemma. The illustrated book stacks, author portraits, and bookstore facades were gorgeous and there were so many wonderful suggestions of diverse authors to read. What a wonderful gift of knowledge and art!

I'm completely biased because I contributed a small bit to this book.

However, this book is objectively good in the work that it does making sure that Black and Brown readers and authors from around the world are centered, heard and uplifted.

It's encyclopedic at it's core and a book that is meant to be revisited over and over again as you work your way through the rest of the books in your library.

The Sequel Tops the Original
Review of the Chronicle Books hardcover edition (November 2021)

[4.5 for hardcover (due to size issues explained below), 5 for resize-able eBook]

A sample book stack page from 'Bibliophile: Diverse Spines' showing co-authors Jane Mount's favourites (left) and Jamise Harper's (right) favourites. Image sourced from the publisher Chronicle Books.

Although I enjoyed the original Bibliophile: An Illustrated Miscellany (2018) for the most part, it stuck very much to the popular reading canon and didn't go very afar afield in providing further TBR leads for me. This sequel Bibliophile: Diverse Spines tops it in almost every aspect. The only downside is if you prefer using the hardcover edition over an e-Book variant. The new book is sized 6.35 x 8.4 inches vs. the original's 8.3 x 9.65 inches, i.e. it is 2/3rds the size. The result is that although the book spines are still readable, they are relatively quite tiny. When the book covers are shown they are postage stamp size. Again mostly readable, but require a bit of squinting or a magnifying glass to appreciate the care taken by artist Jane Mount in painting the reproductions. An eBook edition which allows you to zoom in obviously overcomes that issue.

Bibliophile: Diverse Spines is a combined effort by book promoter Jamise Harper and artist Jane Mount, along with contributions from dozens of other collaborators. The focus is on books available in the English language, but that does include books translated into English from other languages as well. 'Diverse' includes books from primarily African-American, Latin-American, Asian-American as well as international and LGBTQ+ authors. The books themselves are represented by Jane Mount's painted reproductions of their spines and occasionally of their covers.

The selection of themed book stacks, author's recommendations, bookish people recommendations, writer's rooms, beloved bookstores, featured editions over time, featured designers and illustrators was a total delight and a fountain of possible future TBR choices. I think the total number of books pictured here are somewhere between 800 to 1,000 (a very rough guess based on 28 book stack pages x an average 25 books a stack = 700 + 100 to 300 books otherwise featured).

About 300 to 400 books get a specific descriptive blurb or recommendation which is plenty on its own but everything is made to look and sound intriguing. I particularly enjoyed the focus on book designers and illustrators which was provided, including crediting their names in the reproductions of the book cover art. This is an area of book promotion which I don't think gets enough credit these days.
A book cover designer ... distills the essence of a book to attract potential readers, or to put it simply, to advertise the book. It's a marketing tool as well as a type of visual literary criticism. ... Increasingly, I think it means giving the potential reader a sense of what it feels like to read the book. - book designer Linda Huang.
The main goal of a book cover is to sort of distill down the purpose of the book into one recognizable rectangle. - book designer Cassie Gonzales.

Highly recommended for lovers of book art and design and for readers looking to diversify their TBR.

This book was a major disappointment. Or maybe I misunderstood the concept.

DIVERSE = of various kinds or forms; including representatives from more than one social, cultural, or economic group, especially members of ethnic or religious minority groups.

The SPINES are diverse in that they are different colours, fonts and sizes. The authors presented cannot be considered to be ‘diverse’. In fact the whole book is rather narrow in scope.

It took me 30 minutes to go through the entire book. I found (I think) 5 books that I have already read and none that I have the least interest in reading.

Waste of time. Glad I didn’t pay for it.

I love this book. I love the layout using the bookspines of all the books I want to read. I love the discussions of different books by different authors. It invites the reader in such a compelling way to consider each book. I also love showing the art done for different book covers and how much goes into that.

Many of these book I have read, many I own and want to read, many I have at my library, and many I had not heard of before. This is Multi-Cultural Bibliophile, but really these are just a great books. That the stories are told by authors from different backgrounds, cultures, and race is great, but there is something about each of these books that make them unique and special.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you want your TBR to get significantly longer. Enjoy reading about the books, the authors, and independent bookstores. Just Enjoy this book.

Thank you NetGalley, Jamise Harbor, Jane Mount, and Chronicle Books for providing an ARC of this book.

To love this book, you have to know the story from beginning, otherwise it is just another coffee table book. To me is one of my favorites series (Bibliophile) and I love to read them over and over again.

I added sooooo many books to my TBR from this! I did poorly on the painted stacks of books though...of the 27 stacks, I had read at least 1 book from 12 of them, and 2 or more from only 6!

I picked this one up when it was released earlier this year, but I saved the last 15-20 pages for tonight so that it could officially be my last read of the year. I can't think of a better way to finish up a year of reading than with a book that has so many incredible suggestions and recommendations for my 2022 reading year. This is full of wonderful themed lists and gorgeous artwork. Our reading lives are richer for the diversity of voices - this is packed with ideas and suggestions that would be perfect for anyone.

This is a book for every serious reader. It has everything! Some of these authors I have read…but to be honest…most I have not. So, I have created a new tumbling tbr. Diverse authors is now my new go to list!

I enjoyed so many aspects of this compilation. I especially enjoyed the bookstores. Not only do I have more books added to my tumbling tbr, I have bookstores which I must visit.

And the illustrations! I am actually purchasing this as a physical book so I can have the illustrations and the references on my shelf.

Now, this was formatted differently. I read an advanced reader copy for the kindle. I am sure it has been corrected for the future ereader. But I had a good bit of trouble with this. Some words were on different pages and to be honest…hard to find. But, like I said, I am sure this has been corrected in the final copy.

Need a good reference for future reads….THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!

I received this book from the publisher for a honest review.

To say that I loved this book would be a massive understatement. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful—I loved looking at every line, every detail of each image, as you can truly see the level of care that has gone into each book spine, author portrait, and bookstore facade. I enjoyed the way the information was presented, as it was broken down into easily digestible sections, each accompanied by a gorgeous drawing.

I felt as though every description was informative and captured my attention, and I deeply enjoyed the process of learning new things about writers I was already familiar with, and the process of learning about writers whose work I had yet to discover.

Overall it was a pleasant, joyful reading experience and I look forward to purchasing a hard copy of the book to pick up and flip through over and over again. It really is the perfect gift for any and every book lover. I cannot recommend it enough.

Oh, and I absolutely need to take a bookstore tour to visit each of the amazing locations highlighted in this collection!

I am a huge fan of Jane Mount’s artwork and I was so excited to see she partnered with Jamise Harper to create a collection of diverse book recommendations. Early in this book, the author’s mention one of their goals is for readers to walk away with a list of at least ten new books to pick up, and I can tell you, my list has way more than that.

This book is filled with beautiful illustrations to go along with their recommendations. No matter what you enjoy, you will find books for you. They have recommendations by genre (my personal favorites are the romance and YA lists), author spotlights, recommendations from authors and influencers, and even BIPOC owned bookstore recommendations.

This book is not only a fantastic resource, but a beautiful addition to any book lover’s collection!

This is such a lovely book! Bibliophile: Diverse Spines is an ode to authors of color and full of beautiful illustrations and insightful book recommendations. The book is split up by genre and there are author interviews and recommendations for black owned bookstores mixed in between. The recommendations were a great mix of classics, new releases, books I’ve read and loved, and books I was excited to add to my “to buy” list. This is a must have for all readers and would be a perfect gift for any bookworm in your life!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the ARC!

I love the book recommendations, the inclusion of bookstagrammers, and everything black included in this book. Bibliophile: Diverse Spines is a MUST HAVE!
