Luka Darkovic has some tackling skills. He hadn’t planned on using them to bring down a runaway dog the size of a Shetland pony, though, especially not when his neck is already buggered. At 33, a rugby forward protects his vertebrae.. He’s even less happy when the dog’s incompetent owner turns up in his hospital cubicle the next day with a plan to fix those vertebrae. He prefers his life simple and his neurosurgeons drama-free. And definitely less distracting.

Dr. Elizabeth Wolcott just needs a reboot. Or possibly a life. The one place she hadn’t planned to look for it is New Zealand, site of some of her most humiliating adolescent moments, yet here she is. As for adding more humiliating moments? No, thank you. She’s already responsible for the world’s biggest, hairiest, and least obedient dog. She’s not even going to think about a rugby star with a broken nose and a face that crumples when he smiles, not to mention too many supermodels in his past. She is disciplined. She is professional.

Also, she is realistic.

Did she mention that he was the love of her adorable blonde stepsister’s life?

Rosalind James writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense published both by Montlake Romance and independently. Her books are available in ebook, paperback, and audio formats. Rosalind is a former marketing executive who spent several years in Australia and New Zealand, where she fell in love with the people, the landscape, and the culture of both countries. She attributes her rapid success to the fact that "Lots of people would like to escape to New Zealand! I know I did!"

A reread, and still very enjoyable. I really like both MCs in this book, and the way their story unfolds. 4.5 stars.

A brilliant workaholic American neurosurgeon takes a change of scene in New Zealand. Falls for a brilliant rugby player. Both have difficult families, with childhoods somewhat deprived of love. Elizabeth's father in particular is a horrid, controlling, demanding and loveless person who deprived her of any kind of normal childhood.

It's quite a long, meaty book, as Elizabeth and Luka slowly realise how much they are starting to mean to each other. In particular I like the way Elizabeth's inner self is gradually unpacked, and she starts to realise how she can really live a full, multi-faceted life without being simply focussed on her work and nothing else. Luka has his fair share of issues to face as well.

It was an enjoyable and satisfying read. Could easily be read as a standalone, although for those who have been reading the rest of the series, there is some time spent with Nyree and Marko from Just Say (Hell) No. I've read that too and enjoyed the revisit. And there's a great dog in this book :)

NOPE. Per reviews, FMC's step-sister was MMC's "Love of His Life" and he apparently still cares for her up until the end. He dated Step-Sister in HS & College and they lived together but OW cheated and broke his heart.

Reviews state that neither MC seem to be in love with one another but just settled for each other.
Plus, MMC is a major manho who dated supermodels and his stud status with models & experiences is mentioned throughout.

This is definitely on my AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE list!

4.5 stars, rounded up because this was such an unexpected treat

Who could have predicted a book featuring a MMC rugby player would be so smartly written, so emotionally engaging, so psychologically deep, so funny, and so sexy? Okay, okay, there was a good chance of funny and a high probability for sexy, but I was expecting soaking panties and penis piercings and bondage. Okay, okay, there was some light bondage and some skimpy underwear, but the only wet panties described in detail were the two pair that were soaked in hydrogen peroxide and canine stomach acid. Long story, that. You’ll have to read the book.

As indescribably delicious as Luka, the emotionally stunted rugby player MMC is—and he is—the star of this book is Elizabeth, the emotionally stunted neurosurgeon who moves into his New Zealand neighborhood. This woman is at the top of the food chain in her field, is dumped on Christmas Eve by her long term boyfriend, and decides to reboot her life by moving from Atlanta, GA, to Auckland for a year’s stint at a hospital there. She’s a brilliant, highly-accredited doctor. She’s rubbish at everything else: she is lost in social situations, she is incapable of blurting anything but the truth, and views herself as un-beautiful, unlovable, and worthless anywhere but the operating room. The reason? Look no further than her paternal gene donor, a man who’s an easy nominee for Worst Father of the Century.

As might be expected, a relationship between two emotionally stunted main characters is going to be slow going, with some zig zags and some backpedaling and some deep diving into personal issues. They even took their sweet time getting to the bedroom (and didn’t quite make it the first time, only getting as far as the entry way floor). What isn’t expected is how often this story surprises: I kept thinking I knew what would happen and I was wrong 95% of the time and I loved being wrong.

I took off a quarter star for the knee-jerk reactions from both Luka and Elizabeth at the 85% mark, not because it was out of character but because it was so predictable when everything else wasn’t. Fortunately it was resolved quickly. I penalized another quarter star for how close the last 10% of the book hovered toward cheesiness. It didn’t cross the line but the language got a little too flowery for comfort even if it did make my heart smile.

This is my first book by this author and most definitely not my last. I can’t wait to find out if the rest of her work is as outstanding as this.

4.5★ Rosalind James has written a beautiful thoughtful story about a hot talented NZ rugby player, Luka, and an American workaholic neurosurgeon, Elizabeth. It’s quite a long book, but it lends itself well to a lovely nuanced slow burn romance. RJ’s writing effortlessly shows us the growth in E&L's relationship - from irritation & frustration to appreciation, respect & friendship...and with time, awareness of their strong feelings for one another. I think what I liked the most was watching Elizabeth go from living a straight laced, linear existence to one that included enjoying the world around her, the sensuousness of clothing (beyond black slack & white blouse), connections with new people, and the love of a beautiful good man. And I should add that Luka is hot hot hot & Elizabeth was no slouch in enjoying that. 🔥🔥🔥 Would have been 5★ but...more editing please.

Three and a half stars.

Dr Elizabeth Wolcott takes a one year sabbatical as a neurosurgeon to New Zealand when her boyfriend dumps her on Christmas Eve because she spends more time at work than she does on their relationship. Elizabeth's move, over her domineering father's strenuous objections is intended to be a reboot, an attempt to have a real life, with friends, hobbies, pets, plants, basically all the things she has given up in order to be the best in her field.

Luka Darkovic is a rugby player for the Auckland Blues and the New Zealand All Blacks (the national squad, so-called because their shorts and tops are all black). At thirty-three years old he is nearing the end of his professional career and nursing injuries. Luka's teammates might all be loved up and producing kids but he is most definitely not the marrying kind, and he's very clear about that to all his dates.

Luka and Elizabeth's paths first cross when the dog which came with the house she swapped with a New Zealand family runs amuck in the street. Then they meet again when Elizabeth is the neurosurgeon assigned to give Luka a cortisone injection to alleviate the pain in his neck, caused by repeated traumatic injuries whilst playing rugby.

I really liked this initially, the socially awkward neurosurgeon with the playboy, him being attracted to the fact that she is so different from all the women who want to be a rugby WAG (wives and girlfriends FYI). The more Elizabeth treats Luka like a friend, the more he wants to make things romantic, it was very cute. Then suddenly, the pony-tailed, no make-up, flat-shoes, black slacks and white blouse career woman started wearing stilettoes and stockings, oh and apparently had always had a sexy underwear habit (despite working 15-20 hour days and not wearing anything other than plain underwear at work). And then, the sexual gymnastics started and Elizabeth suddenly wanted rough sex/to be dominated, now okay it wasn't every time and Luka was very clear on making sure Elizabeth was into it, but it still jarred on me. It smacked too much of a makeover when Elizabeth had never even worn perfume before and then suddenly she's (metaphorically) swinging from the chandeliers and wearing sexy clothes. Don't even get me started on the hair pulling which is a pet peeve of mine.

Parts of this were a four for me and parts were a three - so three and a half stars it is.

Escape to New Zealand is such a fun, romantic series and the wanderlust it infuses within my soul is hardcore. This was another great read. It’s a bit heavy with some emotional layers for both characters but that just made the story more realistic.
I listened to the audiobook and for the first time, Emma Wilder’s voice seemed a bit whiny to my ears. *shrug* Normally I like her, especially for this series, because she does the accent well.

5 Star Review of Just One Look (Escape To New Zealand #14) by Rosalind James

It was great to be back in New Zealand and Just One Look was a read addition to the series. As I have come to expect from a book written by Rosalind James, I was hooked on the story she wove.

From the first chapter I was drawn to Luka Darkovic and Dr. Elizabeth Wolcott’s story and had a hard time putting it down when real life got in the way. It is certainly a bit of an emotional roller coaster of a read and tears were shed.

This was a complicated love story. It is a story of finding love again when you least expect it. Elizabeth is a neurosurgeon who was dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve (who does that, what a jerk). So what’s a girl to do? Move to New Zealand for a year of course.

Luka is at a crossroad in his career, facing a career ending injury. The last thing he wants or needs is to be attracted to Elizabeth. Both of them have baggage and will need to look deep inside themselves, face what they find, come to terms with their pasts and in doing so forge a future together.

Well written with strong characters that I found I could easily relate too. Ms. James brings New Zealand to life for me and I look forward to reading more in the series. appreciate it.

Rosalind’s superpower is exploring difficult issues with gently wry humour. This romance balances professional sporting injuries, PTSD and emotionally crippling families, with a large badly behaved dog and some risqué undies in the mix, together with some added richness from characters who appeared earlier in the series. It’s a standalone, but you’ll love it so much you’ll want to read its predecessors, if you haven’t before. It’s going on my list of Comfort Books that I read over and over.

Ms. James has once again written a book with such depth that every emotion runs through me as I read it. No spoilers here though. With each of her books I've reviewed I feel inadequate to give a proper review, as I can't find the words to truly describe how great it is. This book is no exception. If you're looking for a story that will keep you interested, introduce you to real-life characters who bare their souls even though it is painful, and draw all of the emotions out of you? You've found it! The same goes for all Rosalind James books. Each book becomes my favorite, every single time.

"I don't trust .... feelings." - E

Elizabeth Wolcott has decided she needs to reboot her life and takes a gap year in her early 30s after becoming an eminent neurosurgeon in the US. She has taken a locum job in En Zed since taking a job working in the Northern Territories in Oz is way too scary for her. After all saltwater crocodiles are way to over the line on the scary scale. So she has packed up her townhouse in Atlanta and arranged a house swap with a professor and his family in Auckland. Elizabeth is looking forward to a nice tidy small house with a small yard and a dog she has not seen but has been told is a lab. But the reality she discovers when she arrives is something totally different. The dog is more of a horse and the house is tiny and not quite what she saw in the Skype chats with the owner. (Note to self: remember to carefully curate your video backgrounds.)

Luka Darkovic has just returned home after a rugby trip to Japan where he had just had one of the strangest interviews of his career. He is tired and hurting and not in the mood to do much other than to do his physio and heal. But he agrees to meet his mate Marko at a local cafe before heading out to a toy store. But his plans do not go off as planned. Instead Luka finds himself trying to stop a small horse masquerading as a dog and a Yank who is totally not in control of this creature. He manages to control the creature and goes off on his day with his neck a bit more hurty. But to his surprise the next day, he discovers that his doctor is none other than the owner of the horse he stopped yesterday.

These two characters are engaging and draw you in immediately. They have both dealt with trauma in their lives and have finally figured out that they compliment each other and that they can heal each other. They both struggle to find a way to heal and be real.

I loved these characters and honestly didn't want to put down this novel, even to go to work. I deliberately took my time reading this novel. And I was super lucky in that the audio version came out at the same time as the novel. I was able to listen to the novel while I was reading it. It made it even better than normal for me. I an now disappointed since I need to now wait for the next book by Rosalind James to come out. I honestly hope she continues this series somehow. I love these imaginary trips to New Zealand and that each of the books written by Ms. James are honest novels. Too many romance books these days are now novellas and the stories are too short to honestly have well developed characters and story lines.

I did receive a copy of both the novel and the audiobook from the author in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. Although to be honest, I do preorder her books as soon as I get a notice of a new one in her newsletters.

Rosalind James has a habit of finding real life issues and peeling the curtain back so we can see her characters struggle and evolve. Just One Look in the Escape to New Zealand series is another excellent example of this.

Elizabeth Walcott is a 34 year old neurosurgeon when her boyfriend breaks up with her on Christmas Eve. This shines a light on what she thinks is “wrong” with her life and she makes the drastic choice to move to New Zealand for a year. This brings her into the path of Luka, an elite rugby player facing his own potential crossroad.

I appreciated that Ms James let us see Elizabeth’s struggle. While the issues that shaped Elizabeth are unique, I think a lot of people can relate to how she sees herself outside of the professional setting. The evolution of Elizabeth’s character was internal (as old wounds were opened) and external (as she pushed herself out of her comfort zone). While there are some awkward moments, overall watching her spread her wings made me like her more and root for her to get things figured out.

Luka is another great male lead is a long line of great James rugby player leading men. He comes to the story with his own set of baggage, but this really just makes him an even better fit for Elizabeth.

Ms James’s excellent story telling skills are on full display as she pulls the various threads together in Just One Look. Not only do we see two interesting characters battle their demons to come out stronger, we see a relationship develop from acquaintances to friends to more. Interwoven with those is a fantastic secondary cast that helps our leading couple in their journey.

Loyal Escape to New Zealand readers will enjoy several of the cameos that pop into the story, but don’t worry if you are just finding the series here- Elizabeth and Luka definitely stand on their own. After this trip to Auckland, I am curious to see what in store for us with James’ next project.

The absolute best part of all Ms James' books is simply the way she writes. Even when she touches on very serious issues, her books still seem like "easy" reads. Not because she writes easy stories, but because the writing makes the reading feel so effortless. The book sucks you in and, when you're done, you feel like you had a little holiday break away from your own reality.
As I have come to expect from Ms James, this book deals with some pretty serious issues but you keep forgetting about this while you read. You feel for the characters in those harder scenes, but then they unexpectedly make you laugh. And life has to go on.
Great cast of characters and a return for some of my favourite people. Oh, and that huge, untrained, hairy housemate? I adored him.

Just wonderful. Absolutely loved this beautifully written book. Elizabeth is such a complex character, somewhat socially awkward but an amazing, inspiring person. Luka is just as multifaceted – a man at a crossroads in life as his sporting injuries begin to become career threatening. Loved their first meeting, thanks to Webster the naughty dog! Enjoyed the growth of their relationship and their feelings for each other as they faced up to their own fears. Rosalind has a real talent for writing realistic characters facing the challenges life throws at them. Totally recommend this book if you are looking for a beyond run of the mill romance.

Adored this book

This was the first book by this author that I’ve read and it will most definitely not be the last. I loved everything about it…the characters, their challenges, their triumphs…everything. So much so that even a few weeks after finishing it, I’m still thinking about it! Looking forward to catching up on the first 13 in the series!

Elizabeth and Luka were just the couple I needed right now. I loved their conversations -- so funny! Both of them are rather awkward in new situations, and they get thrown in tons of new situations during this book. I also loved their connection to one another. They are both all about endurance and training, and they are so much alike. The push-pull between them was very compelling. Also, I loved that Marko and Nyree were in this book, ready to help Elizabeth and Luka along. Add Webster the dog into the mix, and I never knew what was coming next. A great read!

LOVED this book, I just ate it up.
Crafted, controlled writing showcasing two strong characters both with demanding careers that is their 100% focus. Until their paths cross and they find that emotional certainty isn’t quite as attractive or easy to hold on to.
I loved the insight into Elizabeth’s mentality and motivation, how she dealt with the extraordinary daily challenges presented by neurosurgery and the toll it imposed. The parallels drawn with Luka’s discipline, application and his dig deep physicality.
It’s an unlikely pairing and surprises and challenges them both. I was absorbed by their conversations, thoughts and relationship.
The fun is provided by a crazy dog and Elizabeth’s stumbling progress into family dynamics.
I’ve followed Rosalind James from the start of the En Zed series and this latest book distils everything I like about her writing style and descriptive power and just delighted me.

Sweet, light and easy, exactly the reason I read and love Rosalind James’ books. I had a hard time putting this one down and had a smile on my face a majority of the time I was reading it. As in many of her books the supporting characters are sometimes the best characters in her books. In this case Webster, the dog, was just so fun and brought levity to the book.
As per usual when I finish a book from the Escape series I want to go to New Zealand so bad!

Elizabeth Wolcott is one of the youngest Neurosurgeons in one of America's most prestigious hospitals. Prickly, a bit defensive, and untrusting anyone at first. Independent, brainy, awkward socially, but confident in her career/business side. She's the very Opposite of fashionable - awkward with her style, but sticks to the classics and dresses simply, but more for function than fashion. She is even tempered -or highly controlled because she was raised to be that way. She came from a rich (self-built) wealthy family (surgeon dad) who lost her mother at a young age. Dad is a snob and highly critical of Elizabeth's maternal family side (grandmother from the deep south) and her mother's countrified, unsophisticated ways.

How I related to Elizabeth:
In some ways Elizabeth is like any woman who has been raised to be fiercely independent and strong - she is very sure of herself in her career realm, but just as insecure in her personal life. Her dad, widowed when Elizabeth was 4, wasn't the most compassionate, or affectionate father. In fact, he hardly allowed Elizabeth to be a child or display any sort of childish "nonsense". She was a brilliant prodigy and entered college at 16 to become a neurosurgeon in her twenties. Elizabeth realizes after her long-term relationship ended that she needs a reboot of her life and decided to relocate to New Zealand for a year, to find herself (or learn how to let her human side out). She really struggles to hold onto her self-worth and dignity, with her father mainly, who was rigid, cold and cruel with her growing up. She learned to be selfless, generous with her affection and passionate in her love life, despite the early setbacks, relationship-wise. It has been a joy to "watch" Elizabeth grow in her confidence and her self-worth throughout the story.

Luka is a late career, tough rugby player with a heart of gold. He is sexy, without being an overly 'over-the-top' womanizer. He's strong, brave, self-sacrificing, dedicated to his family, but was brought up without a father, and mother withheld love and affection, so he doesn't have a healthy view of family.
• Kind, safe, slightly younger than Elizabeth - 33 years old - nearing end of his rugby career due to neck injuries
• Thinks of others before himself, and smart and educated too. He's a physio therapist - with college degree as a backup for his rugby playing career.
• Happy to get his hands dirty and be inconvenienced for the sake of someone in need

How I related to Luka:
Luka was raised by a single mother and never knew his father. Raised on a farm, with sisters and a grandmother to raise him, he learned early on to be strong and independent. In fact, he is not given a warm, loving home to grow up in, so he learned to fend for himself, and decided to make something out of himself with his love of Rugby. Fortunately for Luka, he is very talented and rewarded by succeeding in a career playing the sport. He meets Elizabeth shortly after her arrival from the States, as she is to perform a "routine procedure" on his neck - to which he protests out of sheer disbelief in her competence. The magic ensues from there as they develop a friendship and serious hot chemistry for each other.

Luka needs to find love and acceptance, outside of the superficial trappings of celebrity, fame, and surface only-type of relationships. Elizabeth is brought out of her shell - in many ways thanks to Luka, and in part, due to her lessons learned so far away from home. Luka breaks down her walls and barriers pretty quickly. Those lessons include "casual dating" that became not so casual, as they found they were more than just attracted to each other. Lessons learned also were in caring for a very large, disobedient, and very hairy dog named Webster, who I fell in love with almost instantaneously. His antics had me laughing my behind off, along with the wonderful chemistry and humorous tone of the story. Rosalind has a way with intertwining soul-stirring humanness, tenderness of emotion, smart, funny dialogue, and hilarious antics with the dog, and this book has ALL the feels. She had me laughing, crying, falling in love with these characters, and intrigued to see how they would develop and overcome many hurdles. It has a feel-good-ending, which is no surprise for Rosalind James fans, but still very satisfying. This book is part of a series based in New Zealand, and includes a few characters you might have read before in earlier books, but this is still a very good standalone, and you will not feel like you have missed the plot without reading the others. I do recommend reading the rest of the series for full enjoyment, though. It's always nice to revisit our favorite characters now and then. This book is such a refreshing cup of delightful imagery of New Zealand, and everything I can imagine about Auckland. This is a great weekend escape read that will take you on a wonderful journey!

This is a delightful story, one that I will definitely read again and again. The story begins with Dr. Elizabeth Wolcott being dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve. He is fed-up with her never being there for him. She is thirty-four, a top-class neurosurgeon, and her job is her world, she works very long hours and is always being called in to the hospital for emergencies. Outside of her job she is a very insecure person. Her mother died when she was four and she had been raised by her neurosurgeon father, who had always been hypercritical of her, her best was never good enough. So she is a woman with a lot of issues.

Being dumped is her catalyst for change, she has to reboot her life, and she doesn’t do this by halves … she heads to New Zealand to take up an internship for a year. She swaps homes with a professor who is going to work at a university in Georgia for a year, she will have a home - and a dog, Webster! She has never owned a dog! She had been to New Zealand as a teenager, when her father was briefly married to a woman from there, and Elizabeth is worried about meeting up with her, as they have lost touch, mainly because of Elizabeth’s insecurity and lack of self-esteem.

Luka Darkovic is a thirty-three year old rugby player, nearing the end of an illustrious career. He has been injured again, and is about to visit the hospital for an MRI scan and treatment. He is sitting outside a café with a team-mate when a huge dog comes racing towards them, if it is not stopped someone will be hurt. Luka grabs it as it passes, it takes all his strength to slow the dog down, but with Marko’s help they stop it escaping again. Unfortunately hauling on a huge dog aggravates his sports injury. Elizabeth at last catches up with Webster, he had run off when she opened the door of her new house. She and Luka are quite spiky with each other, mainly caused by Elizabeth’s lack of communication skills outside of her job, she says exactly what she thinks without thought about other people’s feelings. Next day when he comes to the hospital she realises she met him before, when she came to New Zealand as a teenager - he was the love of her step-sister’s life then! And she is now his surgeon! And she is hugely attracted to him. He thinks she is a clumsy idiot, and doesn’t want her dealing with his treatment, and they have ‘words’.

Luka also has some deep-seated family issues that have meant he has never wanted to get too attached to anyone, his life completely revolves around rugby. However he is fascinated by this confusing, amazon woman, not many woman come close to being nearly as tall as him. And so begins a complicated relationship, very emotional, yet often quite detached and at times very frustrating for both of them as they both find it difficult to talk about feelings. They support each other in a few emotional incidents with their families, and all seems to be quietly and slowly moving towards a happy ending for them when something occurs that seems to mark the end of their relationship, with a huge bang! Tissues will be required, you have invested a lot of reading about these characters ( it is a long story!) and you want to knock their heads together. They both have a pretty rough emotional time before it all gets sorted out and they have their happy ending, but you know absolutely that this will be for ever. Rosalind’s characters are always beautifully written, well-rounded and very real.

A really good story that can be read as a stand-alone book, although if you haven’t read any others in the series it will certainly tempt you to doing so.

5 amazing stars!

Rosalind James knows how to write romance and boy does she deliver with this book, Just One Look, book 14 in her Escape to New Zealand series.

Elizabeth is a 34 year old neurosurgeon from Georgia in the USA. After a break up on Christmas Eve, Elizabeth takes hold of her life and embarks on an adventure, a reboot as she calls it, to Auckland New Zealand. A house swap ensues, and Elizabeth becomes the reluctant owner of a big goofy lovable dog, Webster who provides many laughs out loud moments throughout, also a few tender moments too!

Luka Darkovic is a professional rugby player for the Auckland Blues and the All Blacks, and is having nerve issues with his neck, all part of playing such a physical sport. Elizabeth and Luka meet under funny circumstances and then continue to meet over the next few chapters through coincidental occurrences.

What follows is a wonderful romance story that will reel you in, hook, line and sinker. Elizabeth, funny, honest and very, very clever has no idea of her worth and genuine appeal to others and I feel this book is an ode to her own personal journey of growth that she travels. Luka, flits from woman to woman yet he can’t stop thinking about Elizabeth, and I just love how their relationship develops throughout the book.

Steam! Yes there is a steamy scene or two which the author writes tastefully, fitting in with the natural profession of the book. These two sure have done chemistry!

Rosalind James writes Aotearoa New Zealand authentically and from the heart. Her knowledge of Maori culture, Te reo and tikanga Maori is superb and is carefully woven throughout the pages as she describes the history, the culture and beliefs of New Zealand’s people. It is always a pleasure Escaping to New Zealand with a Rosalind James book!
An immense amount of research must also have taken place in regards to Elizabeth’s job and passion as a neurosurgeon, and I thank the author for making this such an enjoyable part of the book

This is another great book in James’ series about professional rugby players in New Zealand. I’ve really enjoyed every single one in this series. You don’t have to have read the earlier ones in the series to enjoy this entry, but go ahead just for the pure enjoyment you’ll have reading all of them.

In this book, the heroine, Elizabeth, is a brilliant and talented neurosurgeon. She also is rather stunted emotionally due to the coldness of her upbringing. She decides to take a break from her life and leave Atlanta and spend a year working at a New Zealand hospital. There she encounters the rugged and hunky rugby star, Luka. After some awkwardness at their first encounter, it turns out that he is a patient at her division in the hospital because of the pain he’s experiencing in his neck.

Despite both protagonists being at the top of their professions, they both have deep insecurities about personal relationships. They both suffered from frigid childhoods that made them feel unloved and unworthy of love. Luka seems to be the better able to cope with social situations, but he has his own hang-ups. While these two people may seem to have little in common, they actually can relate to each other on a much deeper level.

You’ll enjoy the visit to New Zealand and the glimpses of rugby culture there as well as some insights into the differences in attitudes toward health care there. And the developing romance between Luka and Elizabeth with the funny antics of Webster, the giant and ill-behaved dog that Elizabeth suddenly has to care for.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from the author; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

Loved This Escape!

This was a great journey not only in miles but in emotions and relationships. Full of friendship, emotions, family, heart, heat, romance and love! This sports romance did not disappoint. I was intrigued with this story and had a hard time putting it down. This is the first book that I have read by this author but I already have added quite a few more to my e-reader, so it definitely will not be my last.

These main characters keep running into one another. Even though at first neither one of them recognizes the other from a meeting sixteen years prior. But the sizzling attraction is immediate for them both. Could this be fate?

Elizabeth has just left her prestigious job in Atlanta as a brilliant neurosurgeon to try and reboot her life after being dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve. When she gets a temporary job for a year in Auckland, New Zealand she jumps at the chance to start over somewhere else. But when she keeps running into Luka who is so charismatic, as well as a fine physical specimen in every way, she doesn’t know why on earth he is interested in her. Since he is always surrounded by gorgeous women. But Luka is use to everybody knowing who he is and when Elizabeth just doesn’t seem to care that he is interested in her, he is on a mission to get to know her even more. But when he finds out who she is will he still be so intent on spending time with her?

Get cozy and ready for a great read as Luka and Elizabeth help each other find exactly what they need. Now I need to get on to the next in this series because hot rugby guys are now my jam!

When Life Needs a Reboot

Another Escape to New Zealand book that left me full of hope and happiness, Rosalind James is amazing. She has the ability of creating a complete and driven character and also of putting life in perspective. No matter how much hurt happens, finding a way of moving forward and living your best life is the happily ever after. In this Escape to New Zealand book, both Luka and Elizabeth find that, even while life keeps throwing fastballs when least expected. They were shaped by their past and are living their present yet both are terrified of the future. Elizabeth is proud of her work and is defined by it, she’s convinced there’s no space for a life and relationship with her career. Luka is terrified of life after professional Rugby and doesn’t think commitment fits in his life either. Sometimes you feel stuck and need a reboot. However and wherever that reboot happens, it’s up to you to make the most of it and that’s what they did. I see so much of myself in her. I’m a career oriented woman with a high adrenaline and sacrificing job that wants to have a life yet closes herself off when something that could change my planned future comes along, be it good or bad. It’s more avoidance than self control when it comes to a personal life, just like Elizabeth until she decided to do something about it. Who knows, maybe i’ll take a page out of her book and say yes to new experiences that take me out of my comfort zone. Even if that comfort zone seems crazy to most people.

Wow! Best one yet. I really love Rosalind’s writing style. It’s a great way to learn what is happening with the characters and their inner dialogue - but also just following their thoughts and conversations. The characters talk like real people. They have fears and concerns and problems like real people. And sometimes they figure things out in a good way and sometimes they make mistakes. The journey to the HEA can be a twisty and turny one but they always get there.
Elizabeth and Luka were my favorite couple in the series!! They each were top of their field and weren’t going to apologize for it. A woman who is self-aware enough to know she owes no one an apology for being dedicated to her chosen field is rarely seen or written about. And she did make mistakes around some of her thinking but she kept moving forward.
I love the side characters of their friends as well. Sometimes romance books get too involved and focused on the central characters and to not involve friends, coworkers, family members in a person’s day to day life is always a mistake in my eyes - because we are influenced by those around us. These characters did have friends and did have work relationships and did have focuses other than the new possible love in their lives. It is always interesting to see busy, successful people who are used to a certain pattern and routine in their life try to find where a new person is supposed to “fit”. And for that, I am so grateful. I love seeing characters that have lots of layers that get peeled back.
This was such a great read. I can’t recommend it enough!!

WOW!! Great read...This book follows Elizabeth, a neurosurgeon, to NZ where she travels to reboot her life taking a one-year surgical position in Auckland and Luka who is a #8 for the All Black and Auckland Blue who is once again dealing with a neurological injury from rugby. Their paths keep crossing sometimes it is funny other times it is very serious. What is obvious is the two of them are drawn to each other. Luka helps Elizabeth let her hair down literally and figuratively, showing her how to enjoy life; that there is life outside of a hospital. Elizabeth helps Luka realize what a great man he is; caring, loving and talented with so much to offer others on and off the rugby pitch. Since both come from dysfunctional families there are twists and turns as they learn what makes a good relationship.
I LOVED this book. As always with Rosalind’s books you experience a myriad of emotions. I felt as if Elizabeth was a young bird learning to spread her wings, trying new things out of her comfort zone. At the same time, she was learning to love herself, be happy with what she has achieved and finding a path in life that fulfills her in every way. Luka was more of a “dog learning a new trick”. Is his career in rugby at an end due to all his neurological injuries, will he need to find a new career? If so, what does he have to offer someone emotionally and career-wise? Throw in Nyree and Marko as Elizabeth and Marko’s friends and you have a marvelous, colorful book!

I love my visits to New Zealand with Rosalind James stories and characters and Luka Darkovic and Dr Elizabeth Wolcott’s journey was the perfect addition to the Escape to New Zealand Series. It’s a captivating story that pulled me in from the first few pages and didn’t let me go until I had read the final line. It’s a journey that has it all, it’s emotional yet entertaining, it has wonderful characters and it’s beautifully written but more importantly this author has a way with words, she paints pictures with them and has you feeling like you are there in New Zealand.
Elizabeth a neurosurgeon was dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve so she decides to take a break and move to New Zealand for a year and maybe catch up with her stepmother and stepsister, what she didn’t expect was to fall hard and fast for a hot rugby player named Luka.
Luka is struggling with an injury, he is at a crossroads not knowing if this injury is the one that has cost him his career and the last thing he needs is a distraction that goes by the name of Elizabeth.
What follows is a couple finding strength in each other, they need each other to get past the baggage that is holding them back and they both need to look inside themselves to work out what the future holds. At times this read is an emotional roller coaster but every twist and turn us worth it as you watch this couple find not only strength but all so love in each other.
