Obviously, I read the translated version of this book. A reborn aristocrat in an alternate ancient China replots her life, marriage and family relationships in order to avoid her previous sad ending. While the author spent a lot of time trying to make this a romance, it was actually much more interesting as a political thriller.

Probably more like a 3.5 star. The story is about resolving a feud between two families, the Qiao and Wei clans set in a backdrop probably similar to the Warring states. The Qiaos and Weis were allies but a betrayal from the Qiaos to come to the aid of the Weis in one key battle lead to the deaths of the head of the Wei clan, his son and his grandson. Years later the Wei clan becomes powerful and takes over surrounding kingdoms. The FL is from the Qiao clan and is sent by the clan to wed the ML, the surviving grandson of the Wei clan, in hopes of forming a new allegiance and soothe old scars. At it's core, this is a romance story with some political backdrop.

I read this in Chinese after the drama blew up; I generally like to read the source material before watching the TV show. If you expected the novel to be similar to the drama, it really isn't, it's much more spicier lol, definitely 18+. They basically make love every 2 chapters. There's no way they could have aired it if it followed the source material. I like that the FL was reasonably smart and level headed. Nothing unrealistic, which is pretty rare to see. I feel that the FLs in Chinese books are either helpless Mary Sues or unexplainable OP gods (which make no sense).

***SPOILER AHEAD***

Example, the ML is so much more perverted (??) haha. There was this scene in the book where the FL needed to pee during a bedroom scene so she goes to the toilet and he follows her and eavesdrops on her peeling??? and then says even her peeing sounds are heavenly HAHA Idk what to make of it!?!

***SPOILER END***

Anyway, it was a fairly enjoyable read, but I'd say a tad long winded, it was 171 chapters. It probably could have been 20-30 chapters shorter. I did really enjoy how they showed the ML grappling with loving the FL and his absolute hate for the Qiao clan. The inner turmoil was real and believable.

I’m not rating bc I watched the drama first and read an unofficial(?) translation. Would I ever recommend this book? Not at all. I only read the book bc people kept pointing out the difference between the book and cdrama. Not sure how others feel but, for I think the drama producers did the book as much justice as they could have given what they had to work with.

Even understanding historical context, I for the life of me could not get over the age difference. Which duhh major plot point but still. I did skip major parts that weren’t focused on the ML/FL lead (mainly the strategy chapters of other cities).
